✽A bright smile lit Avery's face. This was her first relationship as a girlfriend, and she didn't know what to say or think. Thoughts ran through her head leaving her feeling dizzy and breathless with relief that Mikey had accepted her as who she was. Not as her fake self, but the raw and broken side as well as her other side. She couldn't believe it.
"Don't worry. We'll figure it out together. Even if we don't get everything right, I'll always be right here." Avery said with a smile as a light blush began to come across her cheeks again.\
"I want to try with you, too." Avery whispered. Barely audible. She didn't even know if that was what he wanted to hear, but it felt right. And right now? Well, she wasn't exactly as collected as she normally was. It was as if she was in a dream. A daze like she had just awoken from a dream. But this wasn't a dream. This was real. Tangible. Exhilarating.
That's when her hand entwined with hers as if it was second nature for them. His hand warm and steady. Hers probably a little shaky after not fully recovering from her initial shock of confessing one of the hardest things to keep from him for so long.
"Small. Sounds perfect." Avery smiled. Glad that he understood her well. She knew. No. Believed things were going to work out. They would get through this together. And someday? Well, someday they would finally get the hang of things. All it took was time and experience.
"Breakfast? Oh. I completely forgot. Of course. Let's go." Avery said with a smile as she squeezed his hand and began walking back towards the castle. Never letting go of his hand. Her joy and happiness finally showed openly for the first time in a very long time. ✽

Then I Saw You and I Knew
Mikey fell into step with her, fingers intertwined, and worked hard to remember how to walk normaly. Left, right, breathe. His brain buzzed like a bee hive, and… he had a girlfriend. It seemed to have all these secret rules. Was he supposed to walk on a certain side? Hold every door? Save her a seat in every class? He wanted to do everything right and also not be strange about wanting to do everything right.
They topped a small rise and the castle appeared in full, breakfast aromas wafting thin on cold air. He looked at her, looked hastily away, then looked back because not looking at her felt somehow impossible. Avery's smile flared and it did that to his ribs again, as if they were being squeezed by a giant.
Flowers? his mind offered. Flowers seemed like the official Boyfriend Move. Which flowers? He knew roses were too much, and thorny. Daisies were a cheery sunshine type of flower. He imagined him smashing into the greenhouses, barking at the Professor for "one daisy, please," and then promptly knocking over a whole tray of seedlings. Okay, maybe not on day one. Maybe he could begin small. A hot cocoa in the morning when mornings were terrible cold. A message slipped inside her book ribbon that just said hello with a goofy drawing that was not very good but tried its best.
He gripped her hand tightly, getting comfortable. "Okay, so, ah… information gathering question," he said, trying to tease but ending up breathless instead. "Do you… have a favorite flower? Like, generally? Or dislike some? I just… don't want to give you something that you're allergic to and all." He recoiled, then laughed at himself. "That was a lot more suave and cool in my head."
They skirted a damp patch where the grass was slick and he instinctively shifted closer to the mucky side. Door rules… right. He could do door rules. He could also remember to match her pace instead of speed walking like he did when he was late to class. Being a boyfriend might just be a thousand tiny adjustments to say I’m paying attention. That felt doable. Good even.

✽Avery still couldn't believe it. She had a boyfriend. An actual boyfriend that cared about her even though she knew she was broken in more ways than one. The memories just a reminder of her past and everything that her mother had done to tear the family apart. She just hoped her mother wouldn't ruin what Avery had with Mikey. She couldn't lose him too after everything else.
As the castle stood before them, the bricks glowing in the morning light, the scent of breakfast filled the air. Avery breathed it all in. The crisp air mixed with the smell of bacon and pastries soothed her bunching nerves after the excitement of the morning.
Mikey's questioned surprised her. Breaking her from her long train of thoughts. She blinked in surprise for a moment. Thinking hard about her favorite flower. That's when she remembered. Wild daffodils. A beautiful flower that normally bloomed in early spring. They filled the fields of her home in Wales with yellow flowers and it was a beautiful sight. "Probably yellow daffodils. They usually bloom in spring in Wales and they always brighten up the meadows. They're beautiful." Avery said with a smile.
Avery didn't know why Mikey had asked her about her favorite flower. She guessed he was probably just curious and trying to get to know her better. Avery understood that. They had both been shy towards each other over the months they had known each other leaving little room for them to get to know each other deeply. Now that they were together, Avery couldn't wait to learn more about him. What he liked, what he disliked, what his favorite color was, everything. ✽

Then I Saw You and I Knew
“Daffodils,” he echoed, like he was putting a pin in the thought so he wouldn’t lose it later. “The bright spring ones.” The picture formed so easily yellow scattered across a green hillside that some of the fizz under his ribs settled.
He squeezed her hand once, a quiet promise to remember. “Right. Noted. I won’t, you know, raid the greenhouses or anything,” he added, lips twitching, “but if a completely legal daffodil ever wanders into my possession, I’ll know who it’s for.”
They drifted down the last stretch of lawn together. The castle windows were warm with light, and the smells of breakfast drifted out on the chill. Mikey’s stomach answered with an unfortunate little growl, he ducked his head, laughing at himself. He moved just enough to take the side of the path with the worst puddles without thinking about it, matching his steps to hers instead of his usual late for class hurry. Maybe this was what “boyfriend” meant, a bunch of tiny choices that said he was paying attention.
The flagstones grew slick near the steps, and he slowed instinctively, thumb brushing the back of her hand. Voices from the Great Hall rolled out through the doors, the clatter and laughter of breakfast already in full swing. They stopped under the shadow of the arch, just outside, and Mikey looked over at her.
“Hey,” he said softly, a little breathless despite the short walk, “do you want to sit together? Or… should we stick with our houses today?” He tried to make it easy with no pressure either way, the corners of his mouth tipping up. “I’m good with whatever you want.”

✽Avery smiled at Mikey. She couldn't believe how lucky she'd been in finding the perfect boy. It was rare for anyone to find the right person for them so young. Many didn't even find the person they cared about until they were adults. That's why Avery was grateful for the spring ball. It was the reason she had met Mikey and the reason they were now dating. One dance sparked everything.
She gripped Mikey's hand tighter as he talked about her favorite flower. Glad he wasn't going to raid the greenhouses and end up getting himself into trouble. Though she hadn't seen her favorite flower for awhile, she hadn't even thought about them since she had left Wales, but of course she wanted to see them again. There was something about the yellow flower that drew her in and reminded her of the good times. The times when life was simple and not as complex as it had become.
"Sitting together sounds great. Much better than quickly finishing breakfast before running to class." Avery smiled at him and squeezed his hand gently. Grateful he had given the idea to sit together. She hadn't even realized that they could sit together until that moment, so she became excited. She knew the day could only get brighter from then. A light in a world of darkness. ✽
