L1: Early Magic and My First Spell
Lesson 1: Early Magical Civilizations

By ancient magic civilization, it covers ancient mesopotamia, ancient egypt and ancient china in that order
Sitting in class, diligently scribbling down notes and scanning the books surrounding me I was my own world. ‘History of Magic’ was my first class of the day and the first class of this new school. I was still getting the hang of this school- there was no way I’d know my way around in a week. I wasn’t nervous but also excited for my first class and was ready to show my professor my skills.
First couple pages was about Ancient Mesopotamia. Learning that Ancient Mesopotamia was where some of the first magical practices were recorded intrigued me. Apparently, wizards lived among muggles and used their magic for healing and protection and they even carved spells and charms into tablets that would activate when read aloud. Something that caught my eye was the Tower of Babel legend that was/could’ve been caused by wizards misusing languages-based charms which scattered magical dialects across the world.
Next up, Ancient Egypt where they used magical protections- or curses on tombs and pyramids to ward off intruders. Some early instances of reparo-style spells were carved into the tomb walls so that if something broke, it would always restore themselves. Most of the modern curse-breaking methods also came from Egyptian magic. Wizards also crafted enchanted amulets, staffs and scarabs that could protect, heal or attack.
Finally, the last section of the lesson was Ancient China. This was where wizards in china were masters of alchemy and elemental magic- way before Europe. Potions and magical remedies were developed with early Chinese medicine and some still influence potion-making now. Skimming across the page, my attention stopped at some passage that talked about how they refined charms for repairing and preserving objects- which also influenced later European magic.
I noticed a certain pattern of magic used for protection, healing and repairing things that were once broken. They were all used for different reason and I found that intriguing. I finished reading the first chapter as I wrote down notes I cleaned up my area as I heard of what we’d do next.
Apparently we were going to learn the spell oculus reparo. We were told that we’d get a broken eyeglass and we’d need to restore it to its original, unbroken form. The professor explained that we’d have to image a picture of a unbroken eyeglass, then make a small controlled circular motion as you point the wand at the broken glasses then clearly say oculus reparo. We were shown a demonstration and then we were off to do it ourselves.
Everyone was focusing and trying their best. It took me a couple time before I got it. Focused and determined to finally get this right, I pointed my wand at the broken glasses and thought of an unbroken glasses before doing the movement, clearing my throat before I said the words..
“Oculus Reparo!” I announced and in a blink of an eye, the glasses swiftly repaired itself like it was brand new.
Maybe I’ll enjoy this class much more than I originally planned…
