The walk down to the boathouse was long and precarious, snake-like and steep. As Adeline padded along the path, she was thoroughly unimpressed to find herself caught in a swelling rainstorm. On any other day, she would welcome the rain. But of course, today her bag was crammed with books; many of them borrowed, all of them begging to be soaked. She wasn’t sure if a “Book-Drying Spell” existed, and she preferred not to find out.
The young Ravenclaw paused beneath a lingering tree branch and dug into her satchel for her wand. She removed the instrument from its sheath and pointed it towards the sky in one swift motion. "Pluvia Velo." A powder-blue and brown plaid umbrella unfurled itself from the tip of her wand like an oversized spring flower. Continuing down the path was relaxing from this point on. The pitter patter of rain on cobble stone, the slight whistle of bird song, and the slowly approaching sound of waves lapping lakeshore eased Adeline into a tranquil state.
A heavy wave of fog rolled steadily over the lake, almost obscuring the old boathouse below. Perfect. Addie thought to herself, thrilled at the prospect of some true alone time by the water with her books. The girl began to hum to herself quietly as she grew closer to the aged wooden structure below.
As the girl approached the boathouse, she was shocked to find a new sound enter her radar. Breaking through the tranquil September evening symphony was a vaguely familiar voice, and the clattering of falling objects. Adeline's face grew hot and red with a mixture of anger at herself for not noticing sooner, and nervousness at the prospect of who may be inside. ...Shit. Adeline flicked her wand, dismissing the Umbrella with a swoosh. She paused, before closing the final distance between herself and the boathouse as quietly as possible.
Adeline paused for a moment before slowly peering inside, eyes quickly widening at who waited inside. "What are the odds..." The hushed words fell out of her mouth unexpectedly as if they weren't even her own. Adeline stepped fully into the doorway and faced the familiar figure.
"Sinclair?"

Sinclair stood at a fair distance from the wall of the boathouse, wand extended. An assortment of glass bottles and cans lined the wall, each object perched upon a ledge. A larger metal can swung from a beam, a moving target. The smell of moss and rotting wood lingered in the air, and the groans of a wooden boat and the gentle lapping of water were disturbed by sounds of abused glass and metal.

"Jaculor." A little rock shot out from her wand, shattering a glass bottle. The sound bounced around the limited space of the boathouse, and small pieces of glass littered the floor.
Again.
"Jaculor", she muttered, and aimed for the swinging metal can. It hit hard with a tink, and two rocks previously embedded in the metal fell out.

The throbbing numbness in her head ached with every moment she spent in the castle among her peers. It was only here in her solitude and control of destruction that made her feel at peace. Sinclair wasn't sure how long she'd been in there, but target practice certainly helped her feel like she had a purpose. It was her outlet, and kept her mind honed. The fog and rainfall, though oppressive, felt peaceful, like a blanket that shrouded Sinclair from the world.

"Diffindo!" Metal pieces clattered onto the floor.
Sinclair eyed her final target, the swinging piece of string, but stood properly once she noticed she was not alone anymore. For a brief moment, the Gryffindor eyed that familiar face with an expression that could only be described as interrupted, perhaps even a little annoyedly expectant. She sighed silently through her nose, her expression shifting into a neutral blankness, "...I was not expecting anyone to come down here."

The normally dull boathouse floor was glittered with specks of glass. Addie hardly noticed, however, as her focus was fully absorbed by the Raven haired witch in front of her. The girl from the lake that she recalled was different somehow, though Adeline could not put her finger on what precisely brought her to this conclusion. Sinclair's sharp hazel eyes rested nonchalantly on Adeline, running her red with shameful embarrassment. It wasn't obvious to Addie if the girl didn't recognize her, or worse by far, if she was simply uninterested.
Adeline stepped into the structure and approached Sinclair slowly. "It's Adeline. You might not remember me, but I'm sure you remember that plunge into the lake.." she gestured towards the rippling expanse of water with a nod of her head.
Adeline's attention was grabbed by the light refracting from the glass littering the boathouse floor. The Spinks girl drew her Cherry wood wand once more and motioned it towards the chaos. "Quarzicum." Bit by bit, the glass disintegrated into sand, and slipped between the floors cracks. She offered a small smile to the Gryffindor as she padded towards the water.
"I'm sorry you were hoping no one showed.." Adeline kicked a small bit of metal, presumably a bit of Sinclair shrapnel, into the inky lake below before kicking off her boots. "I was kind of hoping no one would be here." The Ravenclaw plopped down onto the dockside and submerged her feet into the cool, black water.
It was a bit of a display of false confidence, the act of staying. Truly, the look on Sinclair's face, the disinterest, the coldness.. it made her want to turn tail and leave without another word. This year would be different though, Adeline had sworn it to herself too many times to count.
No more running.

She made a little huff, recalling last year. The lake "party", the dead fish, Adeline's wit, and Sebastian's pathetic wailing. While she initially thought fondly of the memory, something in her eyes grew cold in the midst of her reminiscing, and colder still when she saw the glass shards melt into the cracks of the boathouse and the metal shrapnel tumble into the water below.

...I was using that. She'd been breaking things and repairing them, a never-ending cycle of target practice. Sinclair's eyes glossed over the pinkness of Adeline's cheeks with indifference and returned the smile with an unchanging distant demeanour. A little tense, she watched Adeline's back as the girl sunk her feet into the water. To Sinclair, it just seemed like this girl intruded her space and sent ripples across the peace that she'd set up for herself.

"No, I remember you," she mutters with a hint of impatience, "Potiri Putine." She places the conjured glass flask onto the ledge by the wall. "You might not want to be here, unless you don't care about glass and metal flying around. I doubt that's what you need when you want to be alone."

It didn't make sense to Sinclair. Why would the Ravenclaw come into an occupied space when she had previously hoped no one would be in the boathouse? If it were Sinclair, she would have immediately turned around in search for someplace else to be alone. She certainly had no reason to think of herself as any good company.

It wasn't as if Sinclair was trying to intimidate Adeline, as much as it felt like it, and despite how effortlessly she was succeeding. Adeline's blue eyes remained fixed on the shadowed water as the girl continued about her practice methodically. A variety of thoughts raced through Addie's head regarding her next move; It was clear her presence was unwanted, not just from the Gryffindor's body language, but from her words. Understandable. Nobody appreciates such a sudden interruption, Addie knew better than most how necessary solitude could be. Even knowing this, something in Adeline anchored herself to that old dock and refused to budge.
After a moment of deliberation (and a deep breath to nip growing anxiety) Adeline pushed herself up off of the soggy dock edge in one fluid motion, disregarding her shoes, and the likelihood of ending up with splinters. Portraying as much confidence as possible, she closed the distance between herself and the fox-like girl across the boathouse.
"How about this." Adeline swung her bag from her shoulder and plopped it onto the wooden floor before removing a small, lifeless moth from one of the pockets. "First person to succesfully land a hit on the moth stays." With her free hand she snapped her fingers, sending the charmed bug fluttering about the boathouse with impressive speed and agility. "I will even let you make the first cast, since I guess you kind of had dibs on the place and all." Adeline shot a competitive smirk Sinclair's way.
'Whaddya say?"

A little change in demeanour. Sinclair turned her attention away from the wall to watch the moth flutter about, and part of her wanted to end it right then and there, like a cat that had found a new toy it wanted to pounce on.

Her eyes glanced over to Adeline with a hint of doubt and reluctance. In her she saw a calm, determined competitiveness, yet an underlying anxiousness. On a day where Sinclair had more energy and heart, she may have felt a little proud of Adeline for keeping her wits calm. But when it came to competitiveness, were Sinclair asked the question in a crowded room she might not have given a single care and would have slipped away. By nature she was passive, until her patience ran out, at least. Here in the small boathouse alone with this girl, she was forced to confront the idea of competition. She was a little intrigued. A weak smirk tugs on the corner of her fine lips in consideration.

The moth looked like a little flimsy toy... She could be incredibly cruel and just make it explode without a second thought. Would that cause Adeline to run away in frustration? To yell at her? Claim that she's completely unsociable, berate her, and never speak to her again? Despite not quite having the energy to socialise much, nor having the interest to do so in the first place, Sinclair did not want enemies. She did not know Adeline too well and wouldn't want to be surprised by being targeted in the future because she heartlessly destroyed her personal belongings. Sinclair decided to play along for now.

The Gryffindor lazily stretches, her fingers laced, arms pushing towards the ceiling like a carefree feline. "...Alright. But we both start on the count of three so it's fair. Otherwise it won't be fun at all, mm?"

Was that... pity? Was it that Sinclair knew that if given a head start, Addie wouldn't even stand a chance? The look on the Gryffindor's face had shifted, the cold, blank gaze replaced with the smallest glimmer in her eyes, and if you paid enough attention, a trace of a smirk. Adeline could not decide if this made her more or less unnerving; she decided that it would be best if she not focus on it.
The moth flitted about the dank boathouse brokenly. As Addie focused her attention on it, she spoke plainly. "Fine." She drew her long crooked wand once more, ignoring the sweating in her palms. She would never admit it, but part of her hoped that Sinclair would win, just so that Addie wouldn't have to hold her to leaving. As odd as this meeting had been, and as small of a story that the two previously shared, Adeline was admittedly happy to see her face again after so long.
"One..." She began, raising the wand, and taking her stance. "Two..." Her eyes flashed towards Sinclair's. "Three!" her voice rang through the old structure.
Adeline hurled a basic cast across the musty room, narrowly missing the toy, and causing a small bit of waterlogged wood to chip from an overhead beam. Shit. She watched as the piece of debris splashed down into the lake below with a faint spraying of lake water.
She turned her attention back to the task at hand, and whipped her wand towards the pesky moth for a second time, once again missing the "creature". What was previously anxiousness was quickly being overcome with hot anger. Adeline did her best to ignore the lithe Gryffindor, and her casting, keeping her eyes glued on the little green moth.

Sinclair did not wait to cast. She had been practicing alone for some time, on moving targets too, but this? The movement patterns of a chunk of wood or metal can on a string did not compare to the flittering toy moth, and as much as Sinclair tried to determine where that bug flew, she found herself missing. Using the slowing charm would just make the odds of a hit easier for the both of them, and Sinclair did not want to risk it. A flick of the wrist and splinters flew from the old rotting wood right behind the moth, another flick and the oar stand collapsed, oars tumbling with a messy clatter. The misses were annoying, but she could not let herself be affected by it. She told herself to concentrate as best as she could, trying to suppress whatever lack of patience bubbled up.

Her determined eyes flit toward Addie- it seemed like the girl was having a tough time too, but she could not afford to waste time and attention on her. Sinclair stopped aiming for a moment and concentrated on the moth's flight path. There was a certain erraticness to it's flight that made it difficult to predict- but not impossible. She just had to figure it out before Addie did, or, at least before five minutes passed and the moth automatically returned to the Ravenclaw. With a silent intake of breath, Sinclair pointed her wand at the moth. There in her mind's eye she saw her mother with her gun, silently breathing, tracking her prey with the tip of her shotgun, eyes and heart completely fixated on the hunt. The world grew silent, and it was only her and the moth.

Now.

Blood and adrenaline rushed through her veins, "Jaculor!" The little rock shot out from the tip of her wand towards the moth's wing....

....A hit!

Adeline's third and final cast smashed victoriously through one fluttering wing, and instantaneously, Sinclair's cast took out the other. It was comical, truly. Of all outcomes, Adeline did not expect a tie. The green moth’s lifeless descent ended in the inky water, its fall concluding with a delicate ripple.
Turning to face Sinclair was the last thing Adeline felt like doing. Her competitive streak had faded fast, replaced with... disappointment? Embarrassment? The feeling was most certainly not positive, Adeline understood that much.
"Wingardium Leviosa." She mumbled, just clearly enough for her wand to accept. The toy hovered onto the soggy dock and landed with a little splat. "Reparo." Adeline swished her wand towards the broken creature, a bit of ease settling her spirits as the toy returned to it's previous unbroken form. The young Raven stashed the Moth away in her satchel and pivoted to face Sinclair.
"Well." She began, finally meeting the sharp hazel eyes of the Gryffindor witch. "I guess we were meant to solve this without magic to do the talking." She crossed her arms, subconsciously creating a boundary between herself and Sinclair. The boathouse was in a bit of a disheveled state at this point, oars littering the floor along with the remnants of Sinclair's target practice, and the splinters from the boathouse ceiling. Adeline had noticed.
"I'm staying to clean all of..this up." She gestured to the boathouse as a whole. "You can... you can do what you please." It felt so mean. As uncomfortable as it was, if Adeline was ever going to grow her confidence, she would first have to plant the seed. It was necessary that she took this chance to stand up.
She turned her back on the girl and busied herself with trivial cleaning.

Determined light hazel eyes slowly lost their light as the moth's destruction gave the answer: a tie. Sinclair had to admit, she was a little disappointed, a little irritated. The Gryffindor quietly watched Addie repair her moth, eyes fixated on the object that wasted her energy with an inconclusive outcome. At this point, she did not quite care as much about winning and keeping the boathouse all to herself, but now she had to make a choice: stay with Addie, leave, or make Addie leave.

Sinclair watched silently, thumb rubbing the cherry of her wand as Addie started repairs. She let out a somewhat audible sigh, rubbing the side of her neck at this little conundrum.

"Reparo....reparo..." she mutters repeatedly, fixing the remaining shards of glass, scrap metal, and the oar stand-- the things she was responsible for breaking. Wood and ropes creak against each other, and gentle ripples fill the silence. Despite the initial annoyance, this was... a little fun. She glances over at Addie, observing quietly as if considering her options. She was usually a little possessive of spaces she deemed her own, but she did not really own the boathouse. Maybe this was a sign for a change of scenery and some other area of Hogwarts grounds will face her controlled chaos. It was not giving up; it was choosing to let go and preserve her own peace. She shuts her eyes briefly before making her decision. Sinclair heads over to the doorway, pausing there with a neutral, subtly friendly demeanour, "I've spent more than enough time here. I'm going to go, Addie. I'll let you enjoy your solitude."
