| CV | The first time Camille saw his bedroom, he’d had a complete mental breakdown; he’d screamed at people, cursed this whole school and whoever was in charge of running it, and then stormed out to the common room in hysteria to find someone– anyone– who could set things right. The poor second year in their pajamas, toothbrush hanging out his mouth, had looked terrified to be cornered without reason. Camille had stomped over, demanding answers immediately of who was in charge at this place, and hopefully could fix this mistake. Mistake was the only way to describe it. After all, someone of his refinement, his standing, could hardly be expected to share a room like a common student. Unless someone on the school board had a personal vendetta against him, a mere first year. Pathetic. There were people for everything, and he wouldn’t hold it against anyone to be envious of him. “P-Prefects,” the boy had stammered through minty foam. A quick glance around the common room confirmed they were the only ones there, as expected at this hour. The French boy’s entitlement did not care for the hour. “And?” He snapped, his patience, already in short supply, had long since vanished. “Where am I supposed to find these prefects?!” He couldn’t even remember what the Ravenclaw prefect was supposed to look like, if the escortant after the sorting feast had been a boy or girl. Camille hadn’t even been there for the tour. It was clear that the boy had no more answers to offer, merely a slack-jawed shake of his head. With a sigh, Camille ordered, “Fine, leave,” and the boy scurried away to his own dorm. Useless. Absolutely useless. He had no other choice but to return to his own torture chamber, face his stupid bunk mate once more, tail between his legs. The humiliation of returning empty handed was almost worse than the initial discovery. Camille had to survive one night in the bunk, but he had a goal for the next day. Actually finding these prefects would turn out to be pursuit lasting several days. The morning after a rather fitful night, he’d been up bright and early, since no amount of tossing and turning could bring him back to sleep. Putting on his immaculate, tailored robes in usual order, Camille spent the first hours before classes lounging in a common room armchair, watching every bypasser like a hawk. Eyes searching for some badge of sorts. Several noisy children, none of them a prefect. Classes would start soon, and as much as the thought of leaving the common room without his “justice” grated on him, he had no choice. It would have to wait until afternoon. By the time that evening he walked back to the common room, Camille was starting to question if these prefects even existed, or were just a mythological beings. How was it possible to not have run into a single person of authority? They must be here somewhere. He refused to believe the board could be so incompetent as to place him in such a predicament without some visible enforcement of order. Then again, the headmaster had completely ignored the letter and his arrival. Finally, in the corridor, he caught sight of someone older, seemingly confident, and unmistakably sporting a prefect badge. Camille froze for a fraction of a second at the sight of the girl, blonde hair billowing— finally, someone with authority. Straightening his posture and smoothing down his already immaculate robes, he approached with the air of someone who had been wronged by the very institution itself. “Finally,” he said, voice low but deadly, “I believe you are the person who can fix this disaster.” |

| CV | From what he’d expected of these so-called prefects, after searching for these mythical beings of authority for what felt like day and night, to be greeted with attitude was not something he’d imagined to have to deal with. The blonde girl’s venomous glare, and hissing tone caught him off guard. However, instead of humbling Camille, on the contrary, it had the complete opposite effect. The French boy narrowed his eyes at her, offended by angelic beauty while simultaneously offering a bit of humor to the situation. Granted, Camille spoke in nothing but attitude, but he wasn’t the one carrying a badge on his chest. They couldn’t pay him a million galleons to wear one; the fact that she did meant she was representing the institution to some degree. For various reasons, he thought he had every right to be a bitch. He couldn’t imagine a single school of reputation in France that would allow their public faces to speak with disrespect to their students. Especially not someone of his caliber, though of course, he didn’t assume this girl knew of him. Still, it was not doing Hogwarts any favors in terms of professionalism with such a poor display. It made him wonder who hired these people, if Hogwarts actually gave a shit about their reputation or just handed out badges for show, and if they actually carried some importance, a pretty face was enough of a qualification. “Wow,” he began incredulously– nothing about her presentation so far was amazing. Though something about her, that he couldn’t put his finger on, felt familiar. He ignored it for now, boiling it down to horrid customer service. It surely wasn’t the first time, nor would be the last time he was forced to face someone ill-fitted for their job. Camille took a step closer and crossed his arms over his chest. “First of all, you should be speaking to me with a bit more respect. You’re representing the school, non?” He glanced pointedly down at her chest and the shiny proof of ‘on duty’, before lifting his gaze back up at her blue eyes, as if daring her to deny the obvious. Without giving her an opportunity to interrupt him, he continued. “Secondly, I was told a prefect could help me with my problem. There must be some kind of mistake with my room arrangement. Obviously, I realize I might have had a bit too high expectations of this school,” her attitude, for one, was proof of that. “But in no universe, I should share a bunk bed! Something must be done.” With his entitled demands hanging in the air between them, Camille took a second to observe the girl, the feeling of familiarity intensified. A name danced on the tip of his tongue, too far away. His haughty expression turned more thoughtful. “Do I know you?” Which, in hindsight, would make her dismissal of him worse. |

| CV | The ill-mannered prefect could find no understanding for his situation, a sigh leaving her mouth and eyes practically one blink away from rolling back at him, already over it. Never one to let others opinions influence him, he didn’t let her disengaged expression deter him from speaking his mind about the absurdities in this caste– bunk beds just being the most obvious example. The bunk beds was, of course, just the final straw that broke the camel’s back. If he were to list every single detail of what was wrong with this very institution and welcoming, she’d be listening to nothing else but his outrage for the remainder of the evening. In his current state of mind, Camille thought it was a rant long overdue. When Camille, some may say finally, ran out of words, the oddly familiar girl returned the favor with cold venom, hidden behind, as he interpreted it, feigned professionalism. Though, if she hoped to earn her status in his eyes, it was too late to save face in front of him now. Her words could be summed down to two things; Deal with it, and get over it. The current bedroom arrangements were tradition, and if he expected change he’d be waiting for an eternity. By the awful sounds of it, no exceptions would be made, for him or anyone else. A visit to the Headmaster’s office was the most help she could currently offer him. “The headmaster?” An incredulous scoff, dumbfounded to even hear the title of that incapable man used in suggestion filled the momentary silence. “You’re kidding? It’s not exactly the poster boy for efficiency we’re talking about here. How is he supposed to help me when he can’t even answer a damn letter?” Rethorical question, of course. With the unanswered letter lingering in the back of his mind, proof that the man in charge gave no fucks at all– even if Camille wouldn’t shy away from standing in front of the Headmaster– her words where of no help. As familiar as the girl seemed to him, she claimed she would have remembered meeting someone as agreeable as him, if so was the case. Agreeable? Camille blinked, not entirely certain whether to take her words as an insult, a compliment, or some mixture of the two, though the deliberate light in her eyes suggested she had intended for him to squirm in indignation, which of course he refused to give her the satisfaction of witnessing. Instead, he drew himself up straighter, gaining a centimeter or two, lips parting with a laugh that was more incredulous than amused, the kind of sound that carried disbelief at the absurdity of the moment yet also betrayed that he was hardly as wounded as she might have hoped. After all, Camille was no stranger to the kind of honeyed sarcasm delivered with an angel’s smile. Camille used that method vigorously, the only thing stopping him from caring about his appearance now, was the repeated, metaphorical punches he’d been served for the last forty-eight hours. His father, undoubtedly, would have been scandalized, and furious to see his son lose his composure, yet Camille didn’t give a damn. Justice, in whatever form it might take, must be served. Though if she said was right, if the headmaster was his only hope, Camille was indeed, doomed. Still, there was something he couldn't pin-point, but determined to not leave this corridor with at least some clarity, he probed further. His gaze narrowed, though for once not in disdain, but in thoughtfulness. "Trust me, I barely remember the people that do my laundry every day," he said with an eye-roll. "If someone feels familiar, they must have left an impression somehow." Whether good or bad, time would tell. “And I thought Americans were slow,” he muttered under his breath in french. A heartbeat later, he smoothed his expression into something more practiced, the forced curve of a polite smile. "Maybe I was mistaken." |

| CV | Not immediately registering her change of language, too caught up in his own head — besides, why would he think she was deaf? He might have insulted her in several backhanded ways, but never as deaf. Camille had not yet connected the dots between her comment and his offhanded French remark about Americans. There was no reason why he would expect to run into another French child in this castle, in the middle of the Scottish highlands, on the second day of school. Without thinking, he retorted quickly in French this time, “Qui a dit que j’étais fier?”1 — his brows lifting in casual defiance. The point was clear, he was simply acting aloof. “C’est juste la vérité.”2 The boy was proud of many things, his talents to mention a few, having servants in their household like most high society families, was not one of the things. Convenient, perhaps– he did hate laundry– but nothing special. It took him a few seconds to realize she’d spoken the last sentence in his mother tongue, and that he’d switched to accommodate the change. When he did, Camille blinked in surprise, doing a quick double take at the smaller girl, who was still glaring up at him with her arms crossed. Except for her proven fiery attitude, nothing about her had struck him as French. Camille didn’t know many (natural) blondes, but he also couldn’t fathom why anyone—who wasn’t forced here like himself—would choose Hogwarts over Beauxbatons if they had the option. Still, her pronunciation was good enough that she could have fooled him for a native. In mild disbelief that it might actually be the case, he asked, “Tu es française?”3 Continuing in French, since the language was more comfortable to him, and apparently, there was no reason to continue to bridge language barriers with her. “C’est une surprise,”4 he mumbled offhandedly, not intending to get a response. Speaking the same language was even more reason— in combination with the earlier feeling of familiarity— to believe they might know each other. Committed to finding out the truth, Camille asked, “Comment tu t’appelles?”5 Pieces of the puzzle began to fall into place even before she could answer. A flicker of memory struck him — a sunlit beach on a cool winter afternoon, a warm summer day, climbing the fence by the horse pasture near his home in Cap d’Antibes. A half-forgotten childhood dream from another time. A girl with blonde hair and a pretty laugh, no more than eight or nine at the time. Camille had looked forward to the summers ever since the first meeting, hoping to see her again, one of the few children in his age that he could consider a friend. A routine that ended as soon as their family left the country. Without any contact between their families, naturally, he hadn’t seen her since that last summer a few years ago. The odds of seeing her again — let alone here, in a castle tucked into the Scottish hills — were absurd. And yet, the feeling was so immediate, so familiar, that the name left his lips before he could stop himself. “Elena?” What were the odds? Camille stared down at her, shocked, slightly embarrassed if he was right, perhaps even with a flicker of hope at the possibility of reuniting with someone from his past whom he shared nice memories with. 1. Who said I was proud? 2. It's just the truth. 3. You're french? 4. That's a surprise. 5. What's your name? |

| CV | The girl flashed him a sharp smile before the lecture— harsh, yet the sound of his mother tongue spoken in her light dulcet voice, almost distracted him from the true meaning behind them: the importance of, if he had something bad to say, at least say his insults to her face instead of hiding cowardly behind a foreign language. It was not foreign in this case, news that still baffled him, and also somehow pleased him. Keeping his cool, he nodded with uncharacteristic agreeableness. Everything leading up until this point proved that the Frenchman did not usually accept others' critique. For once, Camille whole-heartedly agreed with her; it had been unnecessary to act polite for politeness sake, when he should have just voiced his scorn aloud. He would not make the same mistake twice. Considering the words exchanged between them, he hardly saw the point of pretence any longer. “Tu as raison. À partir de maintenant, je t’insulterai pour ton joli visage,”1 Camille promised with a smile, the silly insult almost landing sweet while softened with the casual drop of a compliment. He meant it sincerely, on both accords. However, they were soon side-tracked down memory lane. Recognition caught up with her expression at the mention of her name, Elena. Correctly pinned, it seemed, for a tense pause followed. Then his name. Camille nodded in confirmation, almost feeling compelled to add, who else? Confused, perhaps even astounded to see him here— out of all places— she wondered how. As newsworthy this meeting had turned out to be, Camille wouldn’t lower himself to suddenly beg on his knees, or push for a hug. He wasn’t opposed to a hug, yet now didn’t feel like the right time and place. “How?” Camille echoed softly, partly amused as his eyebrows lifted, his whole demeanor suddenly morphing into a far less entitled and unpleasant Camille at the confirmation of their shared past. While he might have regretted taking such a harsh tone with her, now in hindsight, he was not ready to completely abandon his mission for the sake of nostalgia. “How am I here at Hogwarts, or how did I turn out to be so… agreeable?” The word she had used still amused him. Chuckling now, Camille shrugged and exhaled heavily. “Unfortunate circumstances and a business proposal, I suppose. I don’t necessarily think it’s a bad thing to know what one wants and deserves.” She had been to his home on several occasions in the past; unless she’d lost her memory, Elena must see that all of this did not live up to his usual living standards. Anyone from his background would find the difference shocking. He did not think he’d acted completely out of line, albeit yelling at her was not his most sophisticated act up to date, but he’d also hadn’t expected to stumble upon someone he knew. To most people, that should not matter— to Camille, it played a huge part in what role he decided to play. At seven, eight, nine, Camille hadn’t played any role in the company of Elena. It was almost strange to reflect back on how childishly free he’d been allowed to be in her presence. No one had come even remotely close since, in replacing that part in his life. It was a bittersweet, almost a melancholic feeling experiencing their unexpected reunion this way. The boy sighed. “I apologize for insulting you…” He weighed his words before he continued. “Well, you did insult me back, one might say we’re even now. I do, however, realize I was wrong in assuming you would be able to change my helpless position. For that, I apologize.” Glancing down at her, he flashed her his most convincing forgive-me smile he had to offer. Trying to contain his eagerness to reconnect, the awkward elephant still in the room between them, he trailed off. “... It certainly wasn’t yesterday. How have you been?” 1. You're right. From now on, I will insult you to your pretty face. |
