The Letter She Almost Didn’t Send

Ellie was so nervous she felt as if her sweat was pooling below her. What had gotten into her? She should've talked to someone about this first and asked if it was a stupid idea. She could feel the imaginary spiders crawling up her spine. At least she had no reputation to ruin- she had only spoken to two people so far. And didn't she always act impulsively, uncaring of consequences? And did she have anything better to do? Maybe she was being a bit rash... The worst he could say was no, right? And there was the chance he said yes. She doubted he even knew who she was. She had only seen him in the halls and had never spoken to him. This letter would probably come as a big shock to him. She had asked around a little bit and was about 50% sure he didn't have a girlfriend. But none of her friends knew much about him. And who even was she? Why would she have a chance? She was nobody. Sebastian had never so much as looked at her, as much as Ellie wanted him to, and they weren't even in the same year. She would just send it and see what happens. It wouldn't break her heart or anything if he said no. Ellie had spent a long time on the letter, poring over her wording and checking for grammatical errors.

She was not happy with the note. Too many scratched words, but she knew that every attempt at a letter would end similarly; she had no idea how to actually talk to boys. Ellie tied the letter to the leg of one of the school owls and watched it leave the tower until it was out of sight.Dear S

I know we've never spoken or have any common friends. I hope this letter finds you well. My name is Ellie Soluna, and I'm a first-year Hufflepuff. I'm free before dinner tomorrow and was wondering if you wanted to (and it's totally fine to say no) hang out. I've seen you around the halls, and something about you struck my eye. You could call it a hallway crush. But I figured it'd be worth a shot to see if we have anything in common. To be completely honest, I don't know much about you. But I'd like to hear more. So I guess what I'm saying is: would you like to get to know each other? Even though you've probably never even heard of me? We could just be friends, too, if that's what you'd like. It doesn't have to be a date. We could just get to know each other first and then see where things go? I know it's a bit odd to send a letter out of the blue, and I apologize if this is overstepping any boundaries. I just thought I'd go out on a limb and try being confident!

[A surprising letter]——————------------------------ Sebastian never got mail, so the few times it happened, it was always a huge surprise. His first ever letter of second year came the second week of school, from a first year girl named Ellie. The actual letter could be described as nothing less but… love letter? Admiration letter? Either way, Sebastian was both in awe of how sweet it was, flattered to be her hallway crush, of course, but also kind of sad to have to let her down. If she wanted to be friends, Seb would be happy to get to know her! Especially one with such good taste, but he was a taken man since this summer. Not by a girl, but another boy. Sebastian and Eldred had been an official couple for months now. How was she supposed to know that? Somehow, he’d have to break it to her. It wouldn’t feel right to just leave her hanging after spilling her heart out! Though was a letter really the best way to do that? The boy pondered for a few minutes. I mean, he hadn’t even seen the girl face to face yet. He’d shown the letter to Eldred first (after reading it), and his boyfriend had told him that it was fine, though he would stay close… just in case. “Okay honey, just don’t make it too obvious,” Seb told him. Not reading too much into it – he knew Eldred was a bit possessive (a lot) — Seb decided to accept the lunch offer, and tell her then. Dear Ellie, Thank you for your letter, it was very sweet of you. It came as a total surprise! I don’t know you, but I’d be happy to meet for lunch tomorrow for a chat. What about after classes by the Gryffindor table?
