After awakening at 05:30 sharp, Livia quickly dressed in a white cardigan and a black skirt and decided she would pursue her old academic approaches. It was just after students were allowed out of their dormitories that she began to slink up the stairs, each step punctuated by the dampened click of her boots against stone. She trailed her hand against the railing of the stairs, keeping her gaze level as she ascended.
The Rehearsal Room was not a room Livia had yet had the pleasure of visiting. Most of her time since beginning her proper schooling had been spent either in classes, studying or practising for duelling. After all, she was nothing if not truly disciplined. However, a recent owl from her mother had reminded her not to allow her musical training to vegetate. Her shoulders drew downwards as she finally came to the fourth floor. She cast a quick, longing gaze in the direction of the duelling club, and an even quicker, even more yearning one towards the ballroom, but she pushed forth and found herself in the room for rehearsal.
She stood straighter in the presence of the elephantine arched windows, the antiquity of the domed ceiling. Lifting her chin upwards and letting her eyes flitter towards the vaulting above her, she observed. Her eyes narrowed upon catching a glimpse of the silvery birds on the chandelier; a pang of bitterness ran through her as she acknowledged their beauty.
Coming back to reality, Livia walked over to the in-room piano with all the grace of a dancer, her movement over the floor having shifted into something much softer than the stilted steps she usually took. She stared ahead of her, but her feet moved almost in trained patterns of heel-leads before she finally sat at the bench. She set her bag next to her and pulled out a folder with sheet music; that, she set on the music rest. The next parts were all rote memorisation: backwards finger stretches, outwards finger stretches, finger curls, octave holds. She then moved onto wrist stretches, and finally began to play scales and then arpeggios.
Livia lifted her gaze to the very familiar sheet music—this piece, in particular, was one of the first piano pieces her mother had truly wanted her to learn. Any of Tchaikovsky's works were considered prime pieces of art by the Machavariani family, albeit among others, and although Livia held a fine appreciation for everything from The Nutcracker, her mother had thought that Swan Lake, Op. 20, Act II, No. 10 was something she ought to spent her time practising. It was the last piece she had truly worked on at home.
Her fingers, slow from a recent lack of practice, travelled across the black and white keys, beginning with treble eighths and quickly growing more certain. Livia maintained her rigid posture as she played; however, as she continued through the piece, she slowly lost her awareness of the rest of the room as her focus became solely on the piece she was playing.

Archie, still navigating the massive castle that he'd be staying in for the rest of his education, peered around the corner to find a girl. Playing the piano? Huh. Archie didn't think they had instruments here - well at least not of the musical kind. "Wow! You're good at that. But you kinda look like you're staring into space? Everything okay in your covered head of yours?" Archie asked, voice carrying a tone of concern. "I'm Archie by the way! Archie Hyde. One of the...whatever the badger thing is called." Archie couldn't remember what they were called yet, this magical stuff was still tough to grasp and that hat was creepy as hell. But that thought could come later. The girl in front of him..didn't seem okay. Maybe it was the way she zoned out? Or maybe the fact she's in here alone? She could be getting bullied? Sure, Archie didn't know this girl's story - but it's better not to the judge a book by its cover, as they say. Archie adjusted the curl of hair on his face, trying to fix it so he could see the girl in front of him properly - but it just bounced back, like usual

| CV | Camille jerked awake early that Saturday morning, with the cheap, soaked sheets sticking to his sweaty body. The shirt he’d worn when he went to bed the previous night lay on the opposite end of the bed, though it wasn’t the scratchy fabric that had awoken him this time. His heart was racing like he’d just ran a marathon, and he glanced around himself in delirium. It was his damned bunk bed, as usual. Alone. Reaching for the gold wristwatch he’d put under his pillow for convenience— not because he personally enjoyed wearing them-– the hour was five AM. Early mornings were not a new phenomenon since the start of school, though the rude awakening was no more welcome just because he was getting used to it. He’d had a nightmare again, one where he was being followed, spied upon around every corner with nowhere to hide, something that had become a frequent occurrence the last week after his new arrangement. Ironically, it mirrored his current state perfectly. He’d been trying to avoid Harvey for a week, more or less successful depending on the day. At this hour, the risk of anyone being awake to stalk him around the castle was practically nonexistent. Knowing he would find no more rest (based on experience), Camille carefully climbed out of his bunk bed, earlier than any of his dormmates would care to rise. With no risk of being seen, he collected a set of clean, fresh clothes and a towel to bring to the showers. By the time he returned to the dorm, the other lazy bastards were still snoring in their bunks. Camille sat down by his vanity to freshen up, small droplets still dripping from the wet waves sticking to his temple, now dressed in his apparel for the day. A simple but fabulous white sweater, paired with a pair of tailored trousers. Fingers brushing through his hair to shape the strands into place, a particularly loud and vile snotty snore made him pause his movement. The sound made him scowl, thinking it was a miracle he managed to get any sleep at all, quality of it aside. The reason for his early morning wasn’t productivity, though years of spending his weekends with his vocal coach had drilled into him the discipline of early hours he never asked for. He was simply awake because life was cruel, and he refused to spend another minute in that dorm among snoring commoners. Camille decided to spend the next few hours practising his pitch. There was really only one appropriate place for his artistic pursuits, and that was the rehearsal room on the fourth floor. On a Saturday morning like this, the french boy couldn’t imagine that anyone would be there. Though the last time he thought the same thing, he’d been proven wrong. Walking through the corridors, Camille didn’t run into a single person all the way down to the fourth floor. It gave him no reason to suspect that he’d be running into any people at his destination, either. Of course, it was just his rotten luck that when he arrived at the rehearsal room, two loafers with nothing better to do at this ungodly hour were already inside, chatting as if they owned the place. He glanced between the culprits with narrowed eyes; a brunette girl sat by the piano, meanwhile an unassuming looking boy was making most of the conversation. The girl in particular caught his eye — pretty at first glance, though something in her aura was so off-putting it dragged her beauty straight into the gutter. How it was possible was beyond him. At that moment, he was just annoyed to find his safe haven crowded. “Really? At this hour?” Camille announced his arrival, voice cutting through the air like knives, in case they hadn’t noticed him yet. “Don't you have better things to do?” He could think of a few. |

The gentle drum of Livia's fingers against the keys of the piano lulled her into a state of near-dissociation—the splendour of the room around her blurred until the one thing in focus was the bars of music on the sheet. The reverberation swelled around her, drawing up to large crescendos as the hand on the bass only grew faster. Each small piece of the song dilated in its intensity until—'Wow! You're good at that. But you kinda look like you're staring into space. Everything okay in your covered head of yours?'
Twin pinpricks of emerald green would stare daggers at the boy who had intruded; masking her annoyance was not the first intention Livia had possessed in the face of someone invading her peace. Without doubt, she would listen to his name and his house—valuable information for those who cared to know—but still found it difficult to pay proper attention to him, not when her heartbeat was still attempting to maul itself from within the bony cage of her ribs.
Silence greeted her as she observed Archie. Engulfing, eardrum-shattering silence. A stark shift from the perhaps too-sonorous music playing previously, it had jarred her like a large vulture might some half-alive imitation of carrion. The boy himself stood slight, not too unlike Livia herself, although she thought with a fair amount of contempt that his hair could stand to be better coiffed. She nodded slowly, as if uncertain, and finally met the boy's gaze. 'Well, thank you. I've been trained,' she said in response to his compliment. She ignored the question of everything being okay—with it being so early in the morning, she was not in the mood to candidly state that she had been fine until Archie's sudden entrance. 'Livia. Slytherin. I assume you are referring to Hufflepuff.'
Archie's house mattered very little to her, but correctness was a virtue she was not keen to eschew. Livia nearly turned back to the piano, ready to continue practising, but the staunch awareness of Archie being in the room made her pause. It had been easy enough to lose herself in the dramatic music while alone, but with someone present, she knew she would be more focused on potentially making an error than actually enjoying the song. Thus, she turned to better face him, swinging her legs over the piano bench so her back was to the keys. Another figure caught her eye, and she nodded to acknowledge him before she spoke. 'What brings you here so early in the morning? I was practising one of my mother's favourite pieces, from Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake.'
It would appear that the other, far less polite newcomer had a similar curiosity. Livia stared blankly at the boy who had entered, taking in his pressed trousers and well-tailored jumper. Something about him professed beauty; a small part of Livia thought he might have made a decent model for a sculpture. He almost reminded her of Harvey; however, her dear friend Harvey would never have spoken to her in such a horrific manner. It was beneath her to answer the first part of his speech, but to the latter, she simply stated, 'I'm afraid what I do with my mornings is none of your concern. Surely, you could ascertain a spot for practice in the ballroom if this is just too horrible for your tastes.'
Livia's lips tightened into a taut, taught travesty of a smile as she pushed forth with ersatz etiquette. Her intention was to portray friendliness and openness to conversation, although she had no inkling of how properly her well-meaning aspiration came across. However, the new boy's rudeness had sapped her of any desire to remain kind; she turned herself to face the piano once again, and although she did not resume playing, she flipped through the music on the stand and did her best to ignore the boys who had entered.

Archie nodded in realization. Oh yeah, Hufflepuff. That's what's it called. But that's something he'll figure out later. “Nice to meet ya.”
Archie gave a small smile.
“Me? I heard the songs you were playing. Swan lake, huh? It seems quite pretty Your mum into instruments too? Archie asked, he'd never been one good at instruments himself. "Speaking of which, how do ya even read sheet music?” but hiss attention was quickly taken away by a another male student, who seemed a lot more...brash? Rude? then Archie was. “Oi, mate. Cut it out!” Archie scolded. "Let that Livia do what she bloody wants without your judgement.” Sure, Archie wasn't familiar with Livia what-so-ever but that didn't mean that other bloke could push her around. "Would you like it if I bashed your hobbies, huh?" Archie raised a brow in a challenge...though he secretly hoped the other boy wouldn't judge him too hard. Archie didn't feel like he belonged in a school of magic to begin with, nevermind a bully but he shook his head to clear his thoughts with his curly hair bouncing a bit as he did so. "Sorry..Livia. Am I annoying you? I can go if you need me to.” Archie apologized, backing up slightly.

| CV | As late as a few months ago, everyone that had met Camille, the Camille who put on a show in public, would have described him as nothing but a charming young boy, who seemed admired by most people that had the privilege to meet him. Those who did not fall into the category of a fan or friend usually did so due to jealousy. Was he a diva? Yes. Entitled? Absolutely. But even with his so-called faults, the boy had always been talented in deceit, charming his way around a room. He still was, of course, it was just that his world-view had been turned on its head since the start of term. He’d been at odds with everyone since day one, therefore, the girl’s sneer to mind his own business about how she chose to spend her mornings did not shock him. On the contrary, he rolled his eyes at her attitude. After all, Camille had not entered the room with the intention to be pleasant in the first place. “Oi, mate. Cut it out! Let Livia do what she bloody wants without your judgement.” The other boy in the room scolded him, though the words did not land with Camille as he’d hoped for. Dumbfounded, he turned towards the other boy, looking at him with a raised eyebrow. His outburst struck a comedic cord with him, his thin physique and, in his opinion, insecure aura made it comical instead of intimidating. If he’d expected the French aristocrat to immediately apologize, he was mistaken, though even his intentions the boy had misinterpreted entirely; He wasn’t here to bash her hobby, if she had any inclination towards musical talent above average, hell, he’d even appreciate her for it. His problem was that he was sick and tired of sharing every fucking space of this castle with others, when all he wanted was to be alone. “Would you like it if I bashed your hobbies, huh?” The funny little boy followed up. While landing flat, the threat made him laugh. Camille gazed at him with a grimace of amused incredulousness. “If you wish to look foolish in comparison, then go ahead.” Reassuring him with indifference that in any case, nothing he would say about his hobbies would affect him. He’d heard way worse. Hobbies was a loose term to describe his artistic pursuits in the first place. Why on earth would he take anything a random eleven year old Hufflepuff had to say to heart, when he’d probably end up with an average profession, making poor-people’s money and would die with only his potential offspring to remember him by? Camille, on the other hand, would leave this planet with his footprint left behind, all thanks to his talents and hobbies. His hobbies weren’t just hobbies, they were his future, no matter what taunts this boy could offer. Some part of him was intrigued to hear what he could come up with, albeit not enough to entertain him further. “Livia-” that was apparently her name, “-can do whatever the hell she wants,” he clarified in a heavy breath. He frankly didn’t give a damn, except that they were occupying the only space he considered sacred inside this castle. “Just somewhere else, that’s not in my way.” Apparently, he really ought to find somewhere else that wasn’t tainted with idiots. "Although I have been looking for a pianist. Now when I can't attend my usual lessons..." he trailed off, not hopeful that she would be the one after he'd essentially insulted her, but perhaps he'd be surprised. |

Archie's staunch defence of Livia's musical exhibition had not been one of the possible reactions that had gone through her mind. Intrigued, she began to turn back towards the boys, glancing over her shoulder to better see and hear what occurred. He continued to speak rather kindly about her, and it was that that decided Livia would take a positive attitude towards him; it was not his fault, after all, that she had intended to practise alone this morning, and she should not fault him for his curiosity. Although she would not smile at Archie, when she did look at him, her gaze would soften if only minutely.
The other boy remained a concern. For someone who appeared to take pride in his appearance, given his tailored clothing, his actions did not befit a proper pure-blood. Rudeness towards those of one's own social calibre remained the most horrific faux-pas in Livia's mind; her mother had drilled it into her that she ought to be respectful to anyone her family might socialise with. It was due to that, and that only, that she did not immediately react to the vacuous youth. The more he spoke to Archie, however, with that disdainful, condescending tone dripping with superiority only the most derisible of individuals could muster, the more Livia's teeth ground against one another.
She once again remained silent as she began to formulate a proper response that would support Archie; however, indignation rose up within her like a tidal wave before she could come up with a cool, calculating answer. 'In your way?' Her voice was low, and she was unable to halt herself from arching an eyebrow. 'That's really rather interesting, seeing as I was here first. Your insidious presence has intruded upon my way, but I think I handled your intrusion with far more grace. Again, there are plenty of places to practise. If you desire to be unbothered, I hear there are empty classrooms on the second floor, or even a room that can bend to your will on the fifth. But Archie and I have no reason to leave.'
Then, Livia offered a far warmer glance to Archie. 'No. You're not an annoyance,' she said softly. Even just a few minutes ago, those words would have been false, a peacekeeper at best, but now she was surprised by the truth they held. Now that she had expressed her annoyance, she was more inclined to continue the previous conversation with Archie. 'I suppose you could say my mother likes instruments. It's something of a rite of passage for a pure-blood to be classically trained in at least one. My beloved cousin Evpraksiya is an excellent violinist; even my most impressive endeavours with piano could not rival her expertise.' Purposefully ignoring the other boy, Livia did her best to meet Archie's gaze, and she attempted a smile. 'If you would like, I could show you how to read sheet music, at least some of the basics. It's not too difficult once you understand what everything means.'

Oof, that other guy was getting on Archies nerves...but a feeling in the back of his mind, he knew the other boy was right..just a face. Meant to be nothing, nothing to be remembered. Useless..He looked down at his pale hands..zoning out with worries and doubts overflowing his mind, tears threatening to bubble up from his emerald eyes..until he heard the girl argue back.
Archie was taken aback by Livia's indignation. The boy's jaw hung open and he was speechless for once in his life while his new friend verbally tore into the human pain in the arse. He wasn't really expecting that from the young lady who looked..so prim and proper, but as they say 'Don't judge a book by its cover’ and Archie wasn't one to do that. "Uhh..yeah. So your family are talented musicians, I get it? And quite varied. to be quite honest with you, I didn't think there'd be musical instruments in this school.” Archie admitted, rubbing his neck sheepishly and dabbing his eyes softly with a tissue. “But, absolutely. I'd love it if you taught me some sheet music. Thanks so much!..Livia you said your name was?” Archie asked, glaring small daggers into other boy while he talked. At least someone valued him.

| CV | Leaving— especially when the girl with the terrible aura and worse attitude told him to find somewhere else if he wanted to be left unbothered— was not an option. That would ultimately be admitting defeat, retreating like some weak, spine-less coward when he had every right to be here. The same rights applied to all students, these two included. It wasn’t ideal, but he could tolerate an audience. Admitting defeat, however, was something Camille refused to do. The boy was used to performing in front of a crowd, their presence wouldn’t tarnish the quality of his song, only his mood, which was already at rock bottom. “Fine.” He said in disdain, unable to find the fucks to give any longer, and that included the meek insults. He assumed she had tried to insult him and his insidious presence, though it had little affect. Clearly. “Suit yourselves.” With a huff and one last dirty look their way, he lifted his nose haughtily and crossed to the far end room, on the complete opposite side of the piano. If they refused to leave him alone, then they would simply have to endure being drowned beneath his grand operatic rendering of Pie Jesu—provided they survived his warm-up drills. His voice was as much diva as the rest of him, promising a loud, proud, albeit concert-worthy performance. Camille had performed the same song at one of his father's event last Christmas, and had seemingly stopped time and space, earning a standing ovation after his performance. Perhaps that was one of the reason he picked this piece in particular; he was confidently familiar with it (he was always confident), and therefor ensured he would not leave this room losing face. In terms of his skills alone, listening to him was nothing less than a privilege. And everyone that had had the opportunity to listen to his song, he imagined, would agree. The only downside would be if they couldn’t stand opera, but that was none of his fucking concern. Camille would not allow them the satisfaction of spoiling his practice- which wasn't so much a practice any longer as it was a way to assert his dominance. Shutting out their idle chatter—so ill-placed in a rehearsal room—he began his warmups exactly as he would have done alone. Simple scales at first, something he usually would have done with his vocal coach accompany him on the piano. Since the only piano available was occupied by someone currently unwilling to cooperate, he had to mentally imagine a piano playing in lack of an instructor. With his trained ears, countless of hours in his baggage, it felt like second nature. Nothing spectacular in itself, though his crystal clear tones escaping from his mouth, everyone of them delivered with exceptional control for his age, promised that there was more where that came from. And perhaps he was a bit louder than necessary, simply out of spite for his company. Moving on to the actual song, he began with a soft, clear E4: “Pie Jesu—”. Simple in nature, but with the emotional delivery, the words were transformed into something powerful. Closing his eyes, he sang higher. The literal meaning of the text was completely lost on him, but he sang as though every damn word touched his soul. Too focused on the task at hand, the others in the room faded away as he smoothly glided through the tones, ranging from the gentle E4 up to a soaring C6, his voice resonating from his diaphragm and filling every corner of the space. With each note, the tension in him melted away, leaving behind something almost vulnerable. |

Livia's attention to the social cues she could recognise was quickly growing frayed at the edges – she hoped to maintain a warmer demeanour towards Archie, but the more she saw and heard from the other boy, the more difficult it grew to suppress the death glares and scowls that wanted to mar her still-neutral expression. She assumed that the 'Suit yourselves' from the intruder meant he would leave, so she began to direct her discernment towards Archie. 'Oh – well, yes. My cousins especially. But I can play piano well enough, and my brother has tried his hand at the oboe.' None too successfully, she might have added, but it was beneath her to divulge such information about little Julenka. 'I certainly did not expect Hogwarts to be so well endowed within the realm of instruments. This is a pleasant surprise.'
Her gaze slowly drifted to Archie's face, and – oh, no. The tissue in his hands, the hint of something glistening in his eyes, that had to mean tears, and that was one thing Livia did not know how to fix. She tensed just minutely, suddenly glad she was not practising, and she observed Archie silently. The longer she stared at him (staring's not polite, echoed a voice in the back of her head, which was promptly ignored), the more he reminded her, in demeanour at the very least, of her most cherished little brother. A cruel – or even simply insensitive – word from anyone could make Julian spout tears, and although it didn't seem as if the issue were quite so present in Archie, it remained that Livia had to think back to her few occasions of helping her little brother feel better to even begin to formulate a plan.
To her utter chagrin, Archie triumphed over her when it came to the speed of speaking. He expressed interest in learning some sheet music, and he even expressed gratitude, which made the confusion and concern slowly fade from Livia's eyes as she instead smiled, nodding to affirm that Livia was indeed her name. 'Oh, lovely! I'm certain you'll do marvellously.' She did her best to push forth in her voice all the 'power of friendship' her brother said was written in children's books. 'You seem like a quick learner.'
Then, she took one finger and pressed it to middle C – horrible form, really, but she decided it was important. The sound reverberated, and then she pointed to the note on the sheet music – one line below the treble staff, and one line above the bass. 'This is middle C, where we can start! It –' The warmth in her expression faded abruptly when a vocal scale cut her off. '– My goodness, I didn't know it was possible for someone to be so malepart.' She spoke just loudly enough to be heard by the other boy, and hopefully loud enough to similarly interrupt what he was doing. She did not, however, deign to even look at him. 'Anyway, this is where the two staves – in piano we'll use treble and bass clefs, which I can explain in a moment – intersect. If you ever get lost when reading the music, you can think back to middle C being a line below the treble staff and a line above the bass, and you can count upwards or downwards to ascertain the note. The notes go A through G... C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C.' With each note she said, her voice grew louder, now trying to outdo the other boy (and, of course, ensure Archie could hear her).
Perhaps conspiratorially, Livia let her irises flick towards Archie's direction. 'I will never understand the impudence of some people,' she murmured, finally turning her head to stare blankly at the rather nice-looking singer. That he was nice looking was the worst shame ever. Sometimes the most ghastly of souls were entombed in the loveliest of features. The song, too, resonated with her – not that she would admit it. The requiem, the funeral mass, the plea for rest for the dead; well, given her father's line of work as a Roman classicist, it mirrored some of what she had come to think of certain ruins. Dona eis requiem. Grant them rest.
In fact, those words seemed to fit her and Archie's situation rather well. 'Dona nobis requiem...' Her words were soft, almost musing, almost taunting. Grant us rest. From your voice, she could have added, but she refrained from such an obvious comment. The tantalising (yet immature) urge to slowly clap and utter a dry bravo grew ever stronger, so Livia grit her teeth and turned back to Archie. 'I really do apologise for his insolence.'
