Lost... again

I've been here before...

Percival squinted at a familiar portrait on the wall of a second-floor corridor and sighed. He had definitely seen that painting before. This castle was like a maze. One that stretched out for miles, twisted, curved, and worst of all... it changed. Or, at least, the shifting stairwells made it feel like it did, and now he was lost with a heavy pile of books in his arms. How he had ended up here from the library, he did not know, but there was no point in trying to find his way back.

He'd just get lost somewhere else.

"Not again," he finally grumbled, clearly a touch frustrated that he had gotten lost for the third time this week. His very first week at the castle, so perhaps he shouldn't be too harsh on himself, but he couldn't help it. The burn in his arms from carrying around his books was annoying enough to hate this predicament he got himself into again and again. What if others noticed and gave him nicknames over it?

With a heavy sigh, he decided to put his books down on the floor and look around for a moment. He'd need a clear mind to find his way back to the common room, so all this frustration wasn't exactly helping him.

But the longer he looked, the more frustrated he felt. Every path seemed to either be a dead end or bring him right back to where he was. And somehow, he managed to not run into a single soul, as he looked for a way out.

Maybe he should just give up, and hope someone managed to find him sometime during the evening...

With the news still fresh in her head, Bree bites back the tears that started stinging in her eyes when she thought about the letter. So so cold and heartbreaking hearing it from her mother. Her tone even through letters sounds cold. The short letter, no room for anything but hat she intended to say. Silently wandering the castle, wondering what she should do, she hears someone grumbling ahead.

Quickly hiding in a hidden corner, she peaks over and sees another student. His books are on the floor and it appeared that he was spinning very slowly in a circle? No, looking for something or someone. Although he probably wouldn't find anyone. No one else was in here, other than the random mouse that she saw scuttling by a few minutes before. Ducking behind the corner once more when the boy looks over towards her, she quickly wipes the tears from her eyes. Putting on a smile she pops out of the corner.

"Hello," her voice was soft and gentle, almost a whisper. But the way it echoed in the corridor, she might as well been a giant trying to whisper, "I didn't mean to startle you but I noticed you seemed like you are looking for something. Or someone. Maybe your meeting someone here. If secretly this place probably would be best. Especially at night when you're looking for peace..." Trailing off Bree realizes shes rambling once more. Going back to the subject of what she was questioning him on she offers her help, "If you're looking for something or some place I could help you. Not someone. Id try to help but most likely I wouldn't find them."

Waiting for his reply she studies him. He looked younger. Not as doe eyed as some of the other first years she has seen. Or terrified when she talks to them as if they think shes going to pull out her wand and hex them at any moment. "You are in your first year aren't you," she says so quietly shed be surprised if he even heard her.

Finally, another student!

Percival let out a sigh of relief, his shoulders dropping as the tension slowly eased away from his body. He had lost all sense of time during his search for a way back to his common room, so he didn't know just how long it had been since he saw another student. But it sure had felt like an eternity, and that showed in the little burst of energy he got from her appearance.

Turning to face the smiling girl, Percival was about to speak when she began rambling. His eyes widened a little at the overload, but he steadied himself and returned her smile a short moment later. "Yeah, this is my first year," he said, choosing to first offer what was more than likely an obvious fact to her at this point. A second-year student would never get this horribly lost, right?

"I was studying in the library and lost track of the other students," he continued, "I wanted to try to find the common room but... well, here I am." In the castle, but most certainly not in his common room. In fact, he wasn't even sure if he was anywhere near it, but he supposed that she would know.

Looking at her again, Percival couldn't help but notice that something seemed... off about her. She smiled at him, but her eyes betrayed different emotions. Or was he just imagining things? Whatever it was, he decided not to mention it for now, worried that it could drive away the one person able to help him find his way back.

Returning a smile to her, he chooses to answer the last thing she said. Surprised to know that he heard her, she learned a new bit about him. He's a first year. Although he doesn't really look like one. He starts explaining himself how he ended up getting lost. Studying in the library. Wonder what class he was studying for. Speaking of studying, she needed to study for History of magic.

After a moment of awkward silence as she tries to remember where the Slytherin common room is, Bree lets out a soft sigh. "Your common room? To bad you're not asking to escape this castle. That I could definitely help you with. That doesn't mean I can help you find your common room though," Bree lets out a soft laugh, "Youre a Slytherin right? I know the way. Although Im a Gryffindor myself. Don't worry. I don't usally make enemies out of Slytherin or any house. That's just not right."

Bree allows a moment of silence to fall over them as she waits to see if the first year has anything else to say. Ending up being a mistake as she gets pulled under the ocean of thoughts, her hurt and sadness grows. The silence from her own mother. Even through a letter. Her grandma being sick and she doesn't know the whole story.

The thoughts that are starting to become overwhelming she tries to think of something that would stop them, Finally something comes to her mind. "DO you wanna go somewhere? Like not to the common room yet. Go explore," she blurts out then adding as an afterthought, "My name is Bree by the way."

Percival tilted his head slightly as he watched her. She was smiling, but he thought he noticed something else in her expression, too. It reminded him of when his younger brother tried to hide being upset but could never quite manage to keep it from showing in his eyes. Percival wasn’t sure if he was imagining it now, but the thought stayed with him as she finally spoke again.

Her sudden suggestion to go explore caught him off guard. He blinked at the words, unsure if she was serious, but then the corners of his mouth tugged up into a smile. Exploring sounded far more fun than wandering around the halls on his own, and the idea of making a friend excited him as well.

He really needed to make a few, or else he'd be stuck alone every day and night.

“Sure, why not,” he answered, nodding with a little more enthusiasm than he expected from himself. “I don’t think I’d find my way back alone anyway.” He gave a small laugh, then glanced at her again, the thought from earlier nudging at him. His fingers tightened slightly around the stack of books in his arms as he hesitated.

Should he ask? He hesitated again, but finally decided to speak up. Just to make sure that she was doing alright.

“Um… are you okay, though?” he asked at last. The question left his lips more awkwardly than he intended, but it felt wrong not to ask after noticing the sadness flicker through her earlier. He shifted his weight, hoping she wouldn’t think he was prying.

“I’m Percival, by the way.”

A statue. That's how Bree felt and acted after he asked if shes okay. Normally good at hiding her feelings, mostly because everyone's so focused on themselves. Or maybe she isnt and this is just the first time someone has asked her. She didn't really know how to answer him. Tell him the whole truth? Or just part. Her mind wraps around the question. It's only three simple words but right now they could mean the world.

A light blush of red appears on her cheeks when she realizes that shes just been standing there. Exactly like a statue. Maybe she is one now. He says something else and it takes a moment for her to process that its his name. "I'm...uh," Starting to stutter she stops for a moment to regain herself. Breathing out she starts again, "Im as fine as I could be in my situation. And I'd prefer not to talk about it if that's fine."

After that is said, she thinks over what he said before he asked if she was fine. Remembering that he actually did agree to go doing something else other than finding a common room. Smiling at this she turns and starts walking the way she came. "Anywhere specific that you wanna go? Like a room that hasn't left your head after hearing its mysterious stories from upperclassmen?"

Percival looked at her, clearly a bit worried, but he knew better than to not respect her answer. So, he nodded his head in response. He knew what it felt like not to want to talk about certain things. Everyone had their own problems, after all, and sometimes talking about it didn't help.

“Yeah, of course. That’s fine,” he said in response, “We can just go explore instead!”

Maybe a distraction would be a good alternative.

The castle was big enough to get lost in for days, and there had to be plenty of interesting places waiting to be found. He had already seen staircases that moved on their own and portraits that talked back when he tried to strike up a conversation, so who knew what else Hogwarts was hiding.

So, he stepped closer to where she stood and smiled. “I don’t have anything particular in mind,” he said. “I’ve not been here for that long yet, so all the rooms I’ve seen are the ones we’re supposed to go to.” Now, his smile turned into a little grin, “But if you know any secret ones, that sounds a lot more fun."

He started walking beside her once she was ready to move, and looked around at the castle as they did, “I heard one of the older students talking about hidden passages the other day,” he said after a moment, “I have no idea where any of them are or where they lead to, but can you just imagine what there's to discover? This place is huge..."

He glanced her way again, curious. “Do you think stories like that are real? Or do you think the older students just make them up to scare the new ones?”
