Coming upon @Rosaline Everhart in the waiting room of St. Mungos

Early August 2025.

Some days, St. Mungo's was such a whirlwind that Simon couldn't believe that a full shift had been conducted. Usually there were rushed footsteps and urgent commands and mediwitch and healer all over the place but today, St Mungo's seemed almost suspended in time.

Simon glanced across the way and into the waiting room and saw that even one of the portraits in the waiting room seemed to be taking a mid-morning nap, eyes closing in an effort to no longer fight sleep. Normally those portraits were so nosy about what was going on.

Simon fiddled with his clipboard, straightening the few papers upon it for probably the three thousandth, ninehundred and eighty-third time and hoped that anything would break up the dull rhythm of this day. He glanced to the large clock on the waiting room wall and it revealed only one minute had passed since the last time he checked.

"Simon! Got a job for you," one of the staff members said and Simon jumped at the voice but then smiled at his overtheatrics. Simon stood up, eager to help. "Would you sit with the girl in the waiting room? Her mum's being seen to."

He was in a staff area and had to lean over to see where the girl sat on the far edge of the waiting room. It awsn't a medical task but it did give him something to do. Plus, he wondered if the girl migth be a little nervous. Perhaps he could help.

"Happy to help," Simon told the mediwitch who worked the desk with a smile and then headed into the waiting room.

"Hi there...."
he said as he approached, his voice soft so not to startle her like the hospital receptionist did to him, "Wondered if you might like some company....I'm Simon Kincaid, an intern here at St. Mungos for the summer, Hogwarts student otherwise - to be honest.....I'm sort of looking for something to help pass the time myself. That clock's been ticking since I got here this morning but it feels like it's stuck in some kind of magical slow-time vortex."

Rosaline held her mother Elowen’s hand tightly, as if afraid she’d disappear. They were walking side by side. She looked straight up into Elowen’s face; the big blue eyes concealed a sense of unease. Elowen noticed Rosaline was nervous; she assured her, “It’s just a little exam, not a big deal.” Elowen reached out her hand and patted Rosaline on the head. The warm gesture made Rosaline less worried. She replied, “I’m just afraid that something would go wrong.” She drew nearer to Elowen. The mother said patiently, “Even if you don’t trust me, you should trust the healers in St Mungo's. They’re professional.” Elowen smiled at her. They arrived at St Mungo’s Hospital. Because of an accident during one of Elowen’s missions, she needed to undergo further examination. Rosaline would accompany Elowen over because she wanted more time together with her mother. She was afraid that something bad had already happened, but she couldn’t notice. Yet Elowen had already assured her maybe five hundred times that it was just a routine check-up, Rosaline still had a heavy weight on her heart.

“Mrs. Everhart?” A healer called Elowen’s name. Elowen got up. Before leaving, she squeezed Rosaline’s hand gently, “I’ll be alright. You stay here. The check-up won’t take long.” Rosaline nodded and watched her enter the examination room. She hoped everything would be alright, just like what her mother said.

Now she was alone in the waiting room. In order to distract herself, she started looking around. Sitting on a chair, swinging her legs slightly, she observed the decorations here. The wall was painted white; actually, the overall décor was predominantly white. This made her think of the Everhart family’s clinic, though she didn’t really know that place well. While she was still lost in her very faint memories, a boy, clearly much older than her approached her. He greeted her with a big smile. His soft tone kept her from being startled. He introduced himself nicely. Rosaline caught some keywords like Hogwarts, and her blue eyes lit up with curiosity. When Simon mentioned the clock, she did feel the time was slow today. She introduced herself to Simon with a gentle smile, “Hello, my name is Rosaline Everhart. I’m delighted to meet you. I’d love to have some company.” She continued, “Time does seem to tick slowly today. I think my mom has been in the examination room for like an hour.” Joking aside, she smiled softly, hiding her worries. She paused a little, turned her face straight to Simon, and said, “Wow, Hogwarts! I’m going to Hogwarts this new semester. I’m really excited about it.” She asked with a glint in her eyes, “What does it feel like to study at Hogwarts?”

Talking Hogwarts with @Rosaline Everhart

"Hogwarts is absolutely amazing. I can't say I like it more than London as London is my home, but I like it just as much and it has become my second home," he smiled. "Once you find your footing there, it'll feel like the right place to be and you'll make friends you deem as family." It seemed like no matter what type of personality one had, once they found their people, they felt the same way about Hogwarts - so Simon was pretty confident in telling the girl that. She was already off to the right start, as he could tell she was excited to be starting in September.

"I knew nothing about it going in,"
he decided to stay on the topic of Hogwarts for now. It wasn't that he didn't mind other topics of conversation - but he hadn't been told anything about the girl's mother and if it was minor or something major and just in case it was the later and she wasn't wanting to talk about it or think about it he thought it was best to stick with other conversation.

"I grew up in the muggle world myself." Simon smiled a little, liking that he could talk freely about that. There were so many places in London where he couldn't, so many muggle friends where he couldn't say such things to, but there was Diagon Alley and there was St. Mungos and those were two places were he didn't have to hide who or what he was; well - not fully.

"I was amazed by it all. The spells, the potions, the magical creatures. Dragons! Oh, how I loved that DRAGONS were more than a myth,"
he smiled. At one point in time he was sure that his future career aspirations would have something to do with dragons with how much he seemed amazed by them. Now, his sights were set on magical healing.

"Am I correct to assume that if your mother is here, you're at least halfblooded?"
Simon thought it would be great to already know some about magical before entering the corridors of the old magical school. One would already be somewhat ahead of the game.

The clock still ticked slowly, but as Simon sat beside Rosaline, the unease had been taken away. There was still no sign that Elowen had finished her examination. Though she was now more relaxed, she kept some attention on the door of the examination room. She returned a shy smile at Simon, listening attentively to what he was saying. Her eyes sparkled as she heard the word, “London! I live in London too. Perhaps we once passed each other by somewhere, who knows.” She chuckled at the idea, amused by it. Rosaline could sense Simon’s love for Hogwarts as he spoke, and that made her wonder the place more.

When he mentioned settling in, a worry crept in. What if she couldn’t fit in or find any friends? This notion quickly faded because she had encountered some Hogwarts students this summer, and Simon was one of them. They all seemed very friendly, so she probably could fit in. A slight smile appeared on her face.

“Oh Merlin, Dragons!” Rosaline instantly looked straight into Simon’s eyes, excited. “I’m really looking forward to seeing Magical Creatures, because it’s very unlikely I could see them in London. How can you see Dragons? Is it like in class?” Her tone was curious. She loved Magical Creatures, yet she only knew them from books and hadn’t had the opportunity to actually meet them.

Their conversation topic shifted to their backgrounds. Knowing Simon didn’t have any prejudice toward any blood status, she felt relieved and very willing to speak up. “I think I kind of grew up in the Muggle world as well. My dad is a Muggle and my mum is a witch, so, yes, I’m a half-blood,” she said with a grin to Simon. “It’s quite cool as I think of it that I went to the Muggle school, but I’m going to Hogwarts now, so I have a chance to experience both worlds.”

As she spoke, more and more people entered the waiting room. A man limped past, covering his eyes, his body seemingly covered in dragon-like scales. He looked unwell, but also did not have immediate danger to his life, so he sat in the waiting room. Rosaline’s eyes widened when she saw him, yet she shifted her gaze back. She knew if she stared at someone, that’d be rude. Accidentally, she said her thought quietly, “Whoa, what happened to him…”

Some medical theory with @Rosaline Everhart

"Find your group of people and you'll love it there," Simon smiled assuringly. "And you can always find me. I'm up for some music making in the Rehearsal Room, a good impromptu broom race, reading a book with a friend, exploring the castle a little more because one will ever fully know that place, a trip into Hogsmeade, a swim in the lake, a photo session with magical cameras, and more."

Simon was going to make a statement that her mum should be alright. If it was something big they were worried about, more details would have been given already. He didn't get that chance though as a distraction walked through the door. But it was a fun one, despite Simon feeling bad for the man.

"Hmm, perhaps it's a case of Draconian Dermatitis. Likely its an accidental misfire when attempting to charm a dragon's scale pattern. Thre's this and the magical misfire limp. He's certainly seen a dragon or two. We'll probably know soon if he shows signs of chronic itching because as the scales grow, they'll cause intense itching - however, the more the patient scratches, the more likely the scales will spread. It's a vicious cycle."

"My theory?" Simon paused to think it out a lititle more, "hmm....a Transformation Tonic gone wrong. He wanted to turn into a dragon but insteadonly got dragon=like scales covering his body. Perhaps it was a Potions Night gone wrong with a club, a group of friends, or at a local pub. What's your theory?"

His was merely a guess because he hadn't studied the patient, nor gotten any words from the man. Hers would only be a guess as well but this might be a fun game to pass the time.

Rosaline sat on the bench, hands propped on the edge, and listened intently as Simon told her all the things she could do at Hogwarts. She could feel the enthusiasm in his tone and see the spark in his eyes. Hogwarts. She found that every senior student she had met this summer had such great memories about the school. That made her wonder more and more what it would be like when she went there. Her cousins had told her many stories about Hogwarts before, but entering school by herself would be a totally different feeling.

When Simon mentioned the group of friends she would find one day, her whole face lit up. She had always wanted to know more wizarding kids her age. Though she wasn’t alone growing up at all, she still wanted to have someone to open chocolate frogs or try out Every Flavour bean together. Then she heard ‘music’. She said, “Wow, there’s a Rehearsal Room!” She was excited to know there would be a place she could practice her piano and bass. “What instrument do you play? I mainly play piano, but sometimes play bass and guitar too,” she asked curiously, tilting her head. She appreciated how much effort Simon put into the chat with her. “Oh my, all of this sounds so fun. I can’t wait for September. And thank you for the offer. I hope we can meet in the castle afterwards.” All the activities he had mentioned were so intriguing to Rosaline. It almost made her forget to worry about her mother. Yet the dragon-scales-covered man showed up, distracting her for now.

She accidentally blurted out her thoughts. It wasn’t really like her at all, not very polite. But luckily, the man didn’t notice her gasp. Simon, as a healer intern, made an insightful guess about the man’s symptoms. Rosaline actually didn’t fully understand some of the terms Simon used, but she pretended she understood all and just nodded along. Trying to grasp a little idea that it was supposed to be a misfire charm, she wondered if he wanted to transform himself into a dragon or some sort of creature, but failed. She met Simon’s eyes with admiration. “Wow, I feel like you know a lot. That’s so cool! Is transfiguration like using your imagination for every detail?” She felt sorry for the man but also very curious.

Simon asked what her theory was. Rosaline mused for a moment and then spoke, “I prefer the dragon transformation theory because he still retained scales. Though I don’t know how to explain the limp, maybe some other creature bit him? Oh my, poor him.” She didn’t know a lot about the magic incident, but she tried her best to make a guess.

@Rosaline Everhart's turn

"Piano and guitar mostly for me," he said of the musical instruments. He knew a bit of a few others but that's what he mainly stuck to. He also enjoyed writing his own music. There was something theraputic about becoming lost in it - in the best way possible.

"Fortunate him," Simon spun it a different way. "His limp indicates that one leg remains working properly." He smiled. Simon often was a 'glass half full' type of guy and it definitely showed in that statement.

"I think we've got a classic case of a stunted shape-shift. The tonic was supposed to let him take on a different form but instead of a smooth transformation, the spell snagged and left them half-shifted. I think the limp is a result of either a leg transforming only halfway or residual paralysis from frozen shapeshift magic."

That would be Dr. Kincaid's diagnosis.......if he was a medical professional. Right now, he was just a summer intern. Still, he had learned quite a lot in just one summer. It only strengthend his love for the profession that he aspired towards and made him want to achieve becoming a healer even more.

Through the door and up to the front desk for registration went a middle-aged wizard who was clutching a broomstick that was still smoking at the bristles. "Your turn," Simon smiled, glancing over to Rosalie so she could take first guess. What was she going to think happened to this young man? They were well away from hearing distance, so her potential theory, absurd or not, would not be heard by the young man at the registration desk at all.

TTapping her fingers on her lap, Rosaline felt a bit cold in the room. Maybe the air conditioning was too strong? Wait, would there be any air conditioning at all? Rosaline glanced around, but didn’t notice a huge difference from the waiting room in her grandparents’ hospital. This kind of question appeared because of her half-blood background; knowing the basics from both worlds sometimes confused her in different scenarios.

The thoughts in her mind floated around until she heard Simon's further explanation of the unfortunate man. Though Simon’s remark was far from her expectations, especially when it came to whether this situation was lucky or not. His words let her worries go away, her eyes lit up, and she asked, “Wow. Can this be counted as a case that was lucky enough ? I thought this was quite serious already.” With a low voice, her manner didn’t allow her to publicly comment on other people that loudly. Then Simon explained how the transfiguration might work on this man. The young girl nodded along as Simon spoke. She wondered when she would be this eloquent on any magical theories.

Another man walked into the room with a burnt smell. The St. Mungo was really popular today. Suddenly, she thought about her mother. Why hadn’t she left the examination room? It wasn’t that she didn’t like the older intern’s company; it was the worry in her nature. Luckily, her worry didn’t last long because when the wizard turned around, she saw his broom was basically on fire. Her eyes widened again with confusion. Simon gently encouraged her to take a guess. Though without confidence, she speculated, “Maybe when he flew, he fell onto the fire seed bush? I saw that kind of plant in my grandfather’s greenhouse. They look quite dangerous.” Pausing a second, she added, “Or has he been cast with Incendio?” Rosaline tilted her head and asked Simon with a curious look, “What do you think?” Clearly, she trusted Simon’s judgement better than hers.

Still waiting with @Rosaline Everhart

"Hmm, I think I might recognize that man as one of the maintence crew here. I think it was merely an overheated broom parking incident," he said as he looked to the man's broom. "I think he tried tto quick park the broom inside the corridor just out there," Simon pointed to the left. "The friction and the speed charm led to a raint burnt rubber smell from the binding of the broom." It was quite simplified and Simon knew it, but it was best to keep some of these diagnosises mild. He knew her mind must be racing a mile per minute.

"Would you like any tea? Some coffee? I've got lemon drops!"
Oh, how could he forget the lemon drops! Simon carried them everywhere with him and was almost certain that they made almost everything better.

He'd still get her tea and he's still get her coffee, if she should want any, but he now fished into the satchel beside him and pulled out a bag of lemon drops and moved them closer to her. She should really take him up on that. They were not only delicious, but perhaps the sour and sweet combination helped shock the senses and ease any worry that she was experiencing at the moment.
