The rest of the night was quiet. She continued her painting, often depicting small details that wouldn't complete the painting if it wasn't there, people signing hellos to each other, the professor helping out the younger students and all that. She watched the scene unfold by its own and just quietly captured the scene through lasting strokes, though it didn't have quite the same effect as wizarding photos, it still left an impact to Tatiana.

She had always valued painting among her other hobbies, except for her violin though, which was what she mainly focused on. This was a special talent lent to her by her mother, her godmother told her. She said that her mother was very much like her, and at least Tatiana had inherited something from her that she could use for her own gain after getting abandoned.

She had mainly taught these techniques by herself, her godparents just fueled her confidence and supplies, even if they had to go to muggle stores just to get them. They always valued her talents, Tatiana appreciated their support and would do anything to help them.

After the last few touches, Tatiana set her painting to dry, placing it on the crafts table and wandering around to her own entertainment. She had learned a few signs that helped her explore the event by herself, a few “Excuse me”s and “Coming through” here and there was enough for people to understand, she even signed to some acquaintances on the way to get refreshments yet again, but the silence was still ...ghostly.

After the event, she planned to quietly disappear off to the corridors and back to her dormroom, where she planned to finish the rest of her unanswered homeworks that she left open getting ready for the event.

September 23rd | Ball Room
Even though Milica greatly disliked social gatherings, she still found herself standing in the ballroom, which was decorated.. cozily. Now, the true reason she was here was because she was interested in sign language. She didn't care much for other people, but it would be greatly beneficial to be able to communicate without using her voice. Hence, her unexpected arrival at the gathering.

Before she had arrived in the decorated ballroom, she had been worried about the social part of the event. As she saw the notice on the door however, reading 'No verbal communication, be creative!', she gave herself a mental fist bump. The best events are the ones where you're not forced to speak. After making sure that she looked proper - her dark brown sweater was free of any dust or food crumbs and her skirt was straightened out - she walked into the room.

Inside, Milica noticed that the large space in the ballroom was filled with beanbags, pillows and tables. It honestly looked like quite a comfortable hangout spot. Walking around the room, trying to scan the environment, she found some games and art supplies. The BSL alphabet was also scattered across the room, which would be a way to communicate for those who wished to do so. Milica had to admit, the event was well set up and did look cozy.

A lot of students had already arrived before her. Milica noticed that some were painting, others were using the BSL alphabet to learn sign language, and some were even sitting in the bean bags attempting conversations using such language. What surprised her the most was the constant silence that was present in the room. It was quite calming, actually.

Now, luckily for Milica, she didn't have to embarrass herself by trying to use sign language to talk to someone, as there was no way people would try to speak to her. Instead, she decided to silently walk over to the scattered papers and collect some, before walking over to one of the bean bags and taking a seat right there. As she was wearing a skirt, she took great care in sitting down gracefully, like a proper lady. Once she was seated, she quickly glanced over at others who were also sitting in the bean bags, checking out the room, and started practicing some signs herself.

After many tries and puzzling with the different papers, she finally managed to sign "Hello, how are you". As she had no one to practice with, she just signed this to.. the air. She blanked out a little afterwards, taking comfort in her empty mind, before getting back into the papers. For onlookers, it must've looked crazy: as if she expected the air to respond.

When she was done toying around with sign language, Milica reflected a bit in her mind. She realized that it was quite fun actually, to be able to 'speak' without speaking. After this event, she was surely planning to go to the library to find out more. Perhaps she could even try to become fluent in the British Sign Language.

Minnie had seen the signs everywhere for this event. While she usually was not a very social person, she had been trying to branch out, and this seemed like a good way to do that. Another reason to be here was that she herself knew someone who was deaf and would like to show her support for people learning BSL. Unfortunately for her, that meant that she would be slowly signing to people she didn't know, and was definitely going to show her shyness.

Unlike her sister, brother, or most of her extended family, she was not a social butterfly. Lil was amazing at starting and continuing conversations and friendships, and had tons of close knit friends to talk to at all times. Jack had the most charismatic attitude she had ever met, and was also cute and charming. Her mum and da were sophisticated and social, and fit right in at pureblood gatherings. Even her deaf grandmother managed to have lots of people to talk to. Perhaps it had to do with being a Slytherin, as they were supposed to be good at making friends. But, then again, Hufflepuffs were supposed to be loyal, which meant that they must have friends to be loyal to.

All of these thoughts about bloodlines and houses and families were hurting her head, so she instead thought about her memories of BSL, as she would soon be having to sign quite a lot of it. When she was eight years old, her grandmother had come over to her house. She had been deaf for a year now, and was now very good at BSL. It had taken a while for Minnie to understand why her grandmother couldn't understand her, but when she did, she had immediately wanted to learn BSL, and her grandmother was more than happy to teach her. By the age of ten, she could fluently sign BSL, if slowly.

Being away from home for three years had faded her memory quite a bit, so she spent some time reviewing her signs before putting the sign language book in her satchel and started to be on her way to the event.

When she got there, she was both surprised and intimidated by the number of people there. But her fear and panic melted away as she saw a familiar face in the crowd: Kaitlyn Connor. She had a complicated relationship with Kaitlyn. In her first year, she had started dating her, then Kaitlyn had disappeared into the books for most of her second year. Then when she had come back into the world and apologized, they had talked for a little while. Minnie still wasn't sure if they were dating or not, but she knew that Kaitlyn still made her heart flutter, two years from when she had met her.

Quickly, she bounded over to Kaitlyn and tapped her on the shoulder. About to say hi, she remembered the no talking rule and instead waved her left hand in an arc to the side of her head, BSL for hello. I can already tell this is going to be difficult. Please let this go okay!

On the afternoon of September twenty-third, Frederick had just left his last class, lost in thought. Walking down the corridor on the fifth floor, where the lesson had taken place, he had to make a quick detour to the floor below before heading up to Gryffindor Tower, to empty his bladder.

He knew he had some homework to do, so he quickly slipped into the boys’ bathroom, took care of business, and came back out to continue on his way. But during that little detour, still on the fourth floor, he walked past the ballroom and noticed a sign posted on the door. Curious, he stopped in his tracks to read what it said: “No verbal communication, be creative!”

Frederick lingered at the doorway for a few more moments, trying to make sense of what the sign meant. Shifting his weight from one leg to the other, he let curiosity get the better of him, as usual. “I’ll just take a quick peek.” That was his thought as he opened the door quietly and slipped inside.

Once in the room, he was grateful for having entered so silently. The place looked quite different from what he had imagined, filled with beanbags, pillows, and tables, and already occupied by a few other students who weren’t making a single sound. Soon, Fred noticed that next to the door stood a small table with sheets of paper on it, each covered in symbols. He reached out to grab one before weaving his way across the room toward an empty beanbag beside a blonde girl in a pink floral dress.

As he walked over, Fred held the paper in both hands, skimming through it quickly. There, he found the information that explained better what the sign meant and what was going on. It was an event to communicate through sign language, and he had absolutely no idea how to converse that way, only with gestures. He often gesticulated while speaking, of course, but he was only understood because his words gave the gestures meaning.

Fred finally sat down next to the girl and, almost out of habit, blurted out a cheerful, “Hi!” He immediately shut his mouth, shaking his head with a laugh. Shrugging, with a half-guilty, half-apologetic look, he waved the sheet of paper in his hand and pointed at it, trying to say, without saying, that he didn’t know how to use sign language.

The boy settled into the beanbag, set his backpack aside, and ran his eyes across the sheet with the sign alphabet. He tried to find the letters that made up his name and how to say the word “hi.” Truthfully, he wanted to say much more, like: “My name is…”, “What’s your name…” and “Why is this non-verbal communication event happening?”, but it all seemed a bit too complicated. When he finally lifted his gaze back to the girl beside him, however, he realized she had come up with a better idea: she was writing some things down on a piece of parchment, and that, indeed, would be a perfect way to communicate without using speech.

With the classes done for the day Leo was faced with the decision to go back to his dorm and change or go to the event in his school uniform, ultimately he decided to go with the latter but did drape his robe over his arm. He had noticed the posters hung up around the school, when he decided to stop and read it he was immediately intrigued by the event it listed. He didn’t know anyone personally who used sign language but he thought maybe it would be something fun and interesting to learn. Growing up he spoke not only English but also learned Korean from his mother which he loved to learn and use with his grandmother at home. So getting to learn a new language was definitely something he was interested in trying out. Maybe the notion that there was no verbal talking piqued his interest as well being that he was fairly quiet in the first place.

The day before the event, Leo decided to do a little research to see if he could manage to learn some basics of sign language. Taking a trip to the library again he took a break from his usual studying to check out a book that had information on sign language in it. He did pick up how to say hi and thank you and while he didn’t get all the alphabet memorized he did figure out how to spell his name so he had a decent starting point for today’s event. Now it was time to see if he could put it to some use today.

As he walked up to the ballroom the sign on the door immediately caught his eye, ‘ No verbal communication, be creative!’. He chuckled a little and nodded to himself, alright no talking, let’s do this. He slowly pushed open the door to the ballroom and peaked his head inside before entering the room. There was some people around the room he recognized, a lot of people were already working together to communicate without verbal words. He did decide to bring a notebook with him to either help aid in him trying to communicate with someone or just to write any notes down too. There was a table set up by the door with the alphabet on it so he was quick to take one so that he could try to practice it and be able to use it. He also noticed there was some crafts and games there for everyone so he thought maybe he could try to find someone to talk to and come back and pick an activity to do together.

Leo nervously looked around, not really sure where to begin or who he should try to talk to. He almost hoped that someone would just come up to him but since he did choose to come to this event himself he wanted to try to branch out of his usual shyness and go up to someone. With his notebook and the alphabet paper in hand he casually walked around the room quietly, trying to see if there was anyone who seemed nice looking that he could go up and talk to. Eventually he spotted a girl @Bree Greywho didn’t seem to have a partner or group to work with yet. Taking a deep breath in he walked over to her, tapping her shoulder and giving her a soft wave and signed the word hi that he had learned the night before before writing in his notebook, ‘do you want to work together?’ Maybe they could figure out some of this together.

Isabella stood in front of the mirror in her Gryffindor dorm, gently adjusting the white bow she had pinned into her hair. She had let it fall naturally over her shoulders. Her dress was a pretty white one with light floral patterns scattered across the fabric. It flowed gently as she turned from side to side, checking her reflection. It wasn’t overly fancy, but it felt just right. Comfortable. Beautiful in a quiet way.

Her tote bag sat on the bed. Already packed. Inside, she had placed her water bottle, her sketchbook, and a small pouch with her favorite sketching tools. Pencils, erasers, and a few colored ones just in case. She gave everything one last check, slung the bag over her shoulder, and then headed out of the dormitory toward the ballroom.

When she arrived, the space looked nothing like the formal ballroom she had imagined. She had to give credit to whoever organized. She was pretty sure it was Mylo Atkins. She'd never met them before but she was very impressed. It was cozy and colorful, with beanbags, soft pillows, and low tables spread out across the room. There were areas for crafts, games, and chatting. It was clear that this wasn’t a traditional ball. This was something made for everyone, no matter what they liked. She immediately felt more at ease.

Near the entrance, there was a table with colorful sheets of paper showing the BSL alphabet. Isabella smiled softly when she saw them. She didn’t need one. She had learned BSL years ago at her muggle school. Some of the students there couldn’t speak, including her best friend, Luna. Luna had patiently taught Isabella everything she knew, and over time, BSL had become like a second language. Seeing it included in the decorations meant more than she could explain. It felt like a quiet reminder of home.

Even though she didn’t need a sheet, she still picked up three. One for Maddy, one for Vi, and one to keep for herself as a souvenir. She had invited both of her best friends Madeline Tomlinson, who she fondly called Maddy or Mads, from Hufflepuff. And Violence Bloodthorn from Ravenclaw, who she called Vi. The two of them hadn’t spent much time together before, according to what she knew, and Isabella wasn’t sure how well they’d get along, but she hoped they would. They both had that loud yet full vibe. They were both also a hint of trouble and mischief in their own ways but she loved that. Honestly, she couldn’t imagine going to the event without them. And the third sheet? She’d add it to her scrapbook later, maybe next to a sketch from tonight.

As students milled around, some working on crafts, others playing games or finger-spelling with friends using the BSL posters, Isabella paused for a moment. Unsure of where to go. Then she glanced at her bag. A small idea sparked. She made her way to a quieter corner of the room, settled into a cozy beanbag, and pulled out her sketchbook. The soft chatter around her filled the space like background music. With her pencil in hand, she began to sketch the room. The floating candles, the groups of laughing students, and the warmth in the air.

As soon as classes ended, Maddy hurried back to her dorm to get changed. She had agreed to go to the BSL event in the ballroom, though that is not what she thought she would be doing today. Se had noticed the posters covering all around the school and was interested to see what would happen. She had also heard Professor Samuel would be helping students out so Maddy was really tempted to go, but the Location was somewhat a place that Maddy didnt liked at all. Ballrooms were just not her thing. The extra flashy lights, chandeliers etc, nuh uh Maddy would rather stay in her dorm and would rather study. atahis left a bitter tadte in her mouth. Maddy hurried up quickly, erasing these thoughts from her mind, hoping she wasnt late. She had agreed to meet her bestie Belle, seeing as she was the one who invited Maddy. She hated going to a ballroom but seeing as it had been an invitation from someone she cares about alot, she had to come. Who knows, maybe she will like it in there. She can never not agree to something someone close to her would ask of her. It wasnt her nature.

Maddy reached the ballroom, the sign on the door making her chuckle as she entered, everything was so quiet and she had to hold herself from saying something out loud. She noticed two of her potions assignment partners and waved to them.

There was a table at the entrance having sheets of BSL letters, before she could grab one she spotted Belle, and she couldnt be doing something more less than herself. Maddy noticed her sitting on a beanbag,,,,sketching, exactly something what Isabella Bernard would do.

She walked over to her sneakily, making sure she wouldnt see her and then peeked from behind her shoulder at what she was drawing, it looked like a beautiful sketch of the present ballroom. Maddy smiled and that's when Isabella looked back, slightly shocked but she knew Maddy well enough by now. Maddy grinned to her and sat down next to her not knowing what else to do.

She really wanted to learn sign language since a long time but she had no idea how to. Well lets just see how it goes. She looked around the place noticing people signing to each other and some people writing, well that was smart.

Maddy grabbed a piece of parchment and some ink and quill, she sat down next to Belle again and wrote on the parchment, " I have no idea what we are doing? Should I go grab that sheet of BSL letters guide?"

She turned the parchment towards Belle hoping that she would atleast have some idea, as she mentioned she knew some information about sign language through her muggle friend.

As she read Belle read, she turned her attention back to the room, it looked really good, something she had not quite expected. It was filled with beanbags and the vibe was really cozy, nothing formal. She was glad that she didnt mind being here and was ready to learn something new.

Isabella blinked in surprise at the parchment Maddy slid toward her, then chuckled under her breath. That was so Mads. No dramatic flowery phrasing, no pretending she knew what she was doing. Just the blunt honesty of “I have no idea what we are doing.” Isabella loved that about her. he quickly tucked her pencil behind her ear and closed her sketchbook, satisfied with the lines she had managed to capture. The soft glow of the floating candles was already resting on the page, so she figured it was time to focus on something else.

Instead of letting Maddy run back to the entrance, Isabella reached into her tote bag and pulled out one of the alphabet sheets she had grabbed earlier. She unfolded it neatly and placed it right onto Maddy’s lap with a playful little smirk. She twirled her quill between her fingers for a second before leaning over the parchment to reply. “Did you really think I wouldn’t have one ready for you?

Maddy rolled her eyes dramatically, but the corner of her mouth betrayed a small grin. Isabella laughed softly, shaking her head. “I'll teach you the alphabet!” Isabella wrote neatly. She leaned closer, catching Maddy’s hands in her own. She guided Maddy’s fingers into the shape of the first letter, her movements gentle but steady. She pointed to the poster and pointed back at Maddy's hands to show her that she was signaling the letter A, holding her own hand up for comparison. Maddy furrowed her brows, concentrating so hard that Isabella nearly burst out laughing. When she got it right, Isabella gave her a thumbs up, giving her friend’s hand an encouraging squeeze before moving on to the next letter.

One by one, they went through the alphabet. Sometimes Maddy got it right instantly, other times Isabella had to adjust her thumb or tuck in a stubborn finger. Maddy groaned silently, rolling her eyes or making exaggerated faces whenever she messed up, which only made Isabella grin wider. She quickly scribbled on the corner of the parchment: “You’re doing fine, Mads. Honestly, you’re better at this than you think.

Around them, the room kept buzzing with cozy energy. Students sprawled on beanbags were attempting finger-spelling with each other, some laughing at their mistakes, others nodding seriously when they got it right. Someone had even started a game at the far corner, where you had to spell out the name of a magical creature before anyone else. Isabella knew Maddy would get competitive about it later. But for now, she was content just guiding her friend’s hands, step by step. She liked the closeness of it. Isabella thought to herself that maybe she’d sketch that face later, the one where Maddy’s brows scrunched like she was dueling with the alphabet.

By the time they made it halfway through, Isabella leaned back slightly, still holding onto Maddy’s hands. She picked up the quill again and wrote with a small smile: “See? Not so bad, right?” Then, after shaping her fingers together into the letter M, she added on the parchment, “This is one of my favorites because it’s yours!

Maddy dropped her head into her hands with a silent groan, then peeked up at Isabella with a mock glare. Isabella laughed quietly, shoulders shaking, and squeezed her friend’s hand. She knew if Maddy could talk, she'd grumble about how sentimental Isabella was being. In that moment, with the candlelight glowing above, and soft laughter humming in the background, Isabella thought the evening couldn’t have started better.

𝓥iolence had almost forgotten. Almost. But she remembered just in time, and as much as she did not want to go, she felt like Izzy was a nice person and a very nice friend too. And disappointing her wouldn't be the best thing to do if they had just become friends. Grudgingly, she got up from her bed and started sifting through her wardrobe. What could she wear?

She was confused between a pink dress and a white one, but finally decided on the white one. It would probably go with the theme, right? Was there even a theme? Nevermind, she'd just wear it and hope she wasn't overdressed, or worse, underdressed. She thought a purse would go well with the dress, but then decided that a bigger bag would be better.

Finding her art supplies from her trunk, she quickly packed those in the bag and made sure she had everything, wand included, before finally making her way out of the dorm. She was excited, non verbal communication PLUS fun activities? Sounded like a challenge, and Violence loved challenges. She started going down the stairs, but as soon as she stepped on them, they started moving. Now she didn't know where she was going to end up. 'Really, Merlin? You thought THIS was the right time for me to end up like miles away from the ballroom? Great, okay.'

After 15 minutes of walking, she finally reached the ballroom. The poster that Belle had mentioned was near the entrance. She peeped inside and was pleasantly surprised. The ballroom looked different, good different. Low tables and beanbags with cushions that looked squishable decked the floor. Some areas had some games laid out on the tables, while craft supplies lined a table on one side. 'Everyone would have a fun time here, there's something for everybody.' she thought to herself, feeling a little relaxed and ten times more excited.

Mylo Atkins and Professor Sauber were walking around, chatting with all the people who had come to take part in the event, 'They must have organized the whole thing, I'll meet with them while leaving. Although, this place does feel like I shouldn't leave at all.' She spotted Izzy and decided to finally enter through the doors, noticing the sheet of BSL near the entrance. She'd talk- or not- with Izzy first, and then come back to get a sheet.

She walked over to Izzy, and another girl standing there, although they hadn't met. Had Izzy mentioned a third person? The nervousness started creeping back in, but she shoved those thoughts to the back of her mind. Today was not the day her anti-social personality would ruin the event for her. She was here to enjoy and have fun. And most of the events meant making new friends. She'd signed up for this. Besides, they didn't even have to speak. How bad it could it be?

Finally, she walked over to the table near Izzy. Her sketchbook, a very aesthetic one. was out and an unfinished drawing of the ballroom looked up at her. She pulled a beanbag next to Izzy's and smiled at her and the girl. Setting her bag down, she took out a piece of parchment and a quill, and wrote on it, "Hi guys! Sorry I'm late, the staircases decided to move again. Okay so, as I told Izzy, I've never learnt sign language but I'm really looking forward to it. Izzy, would you mind teaching me also?"

Ally Craig nervously glanced up from her piece of parchment and saw a young boy sitting across from her. "He seems just as nervous and out of place as I am feeling" Ally had thought.
Ally very quietly wrote on her piece of parchment stating Why Hello there!! My name is Ally Craig, and I am a First year Ravenclaw! What is your name? What is your house and year? Nice to meet you! I know I am getting a little carried away here I tend to talk too much when I am nervous, I also ramble about insignificant things

Ally Craig very quietly slid the piece of parchment to the young boy and hoping that she didn't scare him off already with her excessive writing, Ally was quietly hoping that this could be the begging of a long-lasting friendship in the makings.
After second guessing herself too much she went to reach for the piece of parchment paper because she was afraid that he wasn't going to answer her at all since Ally had noticed how big the boy's eyes had gotten when reading her parchment paper, his eyes had gotten as wide and big as saucers as Ally had heard some of the muggles say one day when walking down the street. Oh, boy I just hope I didn't miss out on having a new friend before I even had the chance to really get to know him and really talk to me. Ally had thought to herself.
