Strangers at the Lake
The girl trekked down through the forest, arms crossed and hands tucked inside her shoulders. It was a steady evening, with a soft breeze blowing across the Grounds, lightly shaking the trees and grass making a beautiful pattern across the earth, it was only a matter of time till streaks of color made by the beautiful little flowers in the spring sprouted up from the ground.
The redhead thought today was a day to spend by the lake, just there, sitting beside it till it was time for curfew. Stumbling down the small hill she found herself not too far from the lake at this point in time, the ripples in the water calmed her down, made her feel at peace and gave some sort of sanctuary to latch onto. Saoirse could feel her small curls bouncing off her neck, it was something she hadn't really payed attention to after arriving school she was too busy or stressed out to really focus on those little things beforehand.
The Hufflepuff began to drift off, not even focused on the lake she was few moments away from or the noises around her, just the few little spots of light here and there caught her attention, that was before she reached the lake and a figure came into view.

Strangers at the Lake
The Squid was playful today.
Rather than trying to kill Ruka like it had done last year, today it was just poking its tentacles at him, snatching at the bread the boy brought every single day. It was nice, and comfortable, and it definitely helped take his mind off everything else he had going on.
Ruka had left his dorm early that day, strolling through the castle grounds with his pockets full of food for whichever animals he might encounter, and as always he had ended up by the lake, feeding his peace offerings to the Giant Squid while standing in the water up to his hips, clothes soaked through.
He was just starting to shiver a bit with the cool air outside the water, when he decided to move out of the lake, bare feet brushing cool grass as he squeezed some water out of his cloak. Water dripped down onto his toes, his dark jeans started to cling uncomfortably to his thighs, and he just thought about whether he knew a spell to dry the coarse fabric when he saw a girl come his direction, steps light on the grass.
Ruka put his best people-pleasing smile on his face, not wanting to bother anybody with the frown that constantly spread his face these days, and he took a step towards the girl. "Careful," he warned, chuckling lightly. "The Squid is really active today, so if you go too close you might just end up getting splashed!"

Strangers at the Lake
The girl fell dead in her tracks, a boy lay ahead of her on the lake's shoreline, most of him looked like he had just casually sat down in a bath tub. That made it safe to assume he had been walking around in the lake beforehand, however, it was not that detail she was most focused on; the boy was speaking of a squid or rather what he called 'The Squid', but even when she had no clue what he was talking about she stepped away from the shore a bit more before continuing towards him. Dumb idea really, something just hit the lake not too far from where the boy, causing the Hufflepuff to stumble forward, however her new acquaintance seemed almost unfazed by it, like it was normal occurrence.
"Was that your fate?" The girl piped up, well she couldn't pipe up, she just spoke in a hushed whisper with only the wind and the fact she was staring directly at the boy, who looked similar to her in some sort of way. He had copper hair and emerald green eyes, with one of those people-person smiles to compliment it, overall he looked approachable which Saoirse could deal with.
"Hey..uhm...you could take my robe if you wanted...you look colder than I am, which is quite the feat this winter." The girl tried to sound louder and more caring than she did previously, in hopes of eradicating any idea of a snide girl, she was trying to avoid that, "what's your name?"

Strangers at the Lake
Ruka mustered the girl who had approached him for a second. She looked young, might even be a first year, but being quite small and scrawny for his age himself, Ruka didn't want to assume anything.
What he was able to say with certainty was that she clearly wasn't all that sure about what he was talking about, so he could safely assume that she had never really encountered the Squid before.
"Me?" he asked with a chuckle, looking down at his wet robes. "No, no, I went in on purpose. I bring him some food, usually. Try to keep on his good side." He chuckled before squeezing some more water out of his robe.
The girl seemed a. It concerned about the state of his clothes, even offering him her own robes which probably could have even fit him. He gratefully smiled at the girl and shook his head. "Don't worry," he said, shrugging lightly. He was naturally warm blooded, countless nights spent sleeping in the cold had hardened him to some wet clothes. "I really don't mind. You should keep your robes, I wouldn't want you to freeze." He smiled and held out his hand for the girl to take.
"I'm Ruka," he introduced himself, hands fiddling with his wet cloak. "What about you?"

Strangers at the Lake
The girl chuckled along with him, "ah, I assume being on his good side is a pretty decent idea then." She grinned at the boy, another cool breeze brushed over the forest once more causing her to shiver, she couldn't imagine how he felt half-soaked to death. It was safe to assume he was either dying or unfazed by it, she wished she could be like him and not have to deal with being cold every single day of her life.
He held out his hand towards the girl, announcing his own name, it seemed strange though. She knew Ruka as a name was Japanese but the Ruka standing before her did not look Japanese whatsoever, in fact he looked more Irish than anything else. "Hm, I'm Saoirse." She shook his hand, trying to hold onto the best smile she could muster, "so hm...is this part of your daily routine then?" She stuttered over her words, she was colder than she expected, "well coming down to the lake and feeding The Squid at least." The girl took a long, deep sigh and looked out onto the lake for a second, the sun's gold light glinting off its cool, grey surface.
Just a quick heads-up, I'll be getting off around 10:20 US Eastern Time.

Strangers at the Lake
Ruka smiled and nodded along to the girl's words. Being on the Squid's good side was definitely something he wanted to hold onto. No more near-death experiences in his second year.
He looked at he girl before him, seizing her up for a moment. Her appearance and the lilt to her words made him feel an instant connection; he assumed she might have been Irish but he didn't want to immediately jump to an assumption this early on in the conversation.
"Saoirse," he repeated with interest, trying the name out on his tongue. He hadn't heard a name like that before, but he figured his own wasn't exactly common either. "That's a pretty name." His smile turned into a frown when he realised that Saoirse was shivering.
Feeling sorry for the girl he immediately reached for his bag which he had dropped by the rocks before going into the lake. He rummaged around in it for a moment before he found the spare jumper he had packed just in case he was going to be fully pulled into the lake again. "Here," he said with an encouraging smile, handing the jumper to Saoirse. "You look like you're freezing. This should keep you a bit warmer and I really don't need it anytime soon" He shrugged lightly, gesturing for the girl to just put it on before he returned to answering her questions. "It's definitely a routine. I come here every day, bring the Squid some food from lunch, walk around a bit. I like being out here." He smiled and slowly started walking along the shore, waiting for Saoirse to follow. "What about you? What are you doing out here when it's this cold?"

Strangers at the Lake
She stood, staring him down with sapphire eyes. He spoke up after a moment of contemplating, he complimented her name which made her smile. It had been the first compliment she had received in a while or well, it had been last year since she actually felt that nice. "Thanks," she paused, wanting to say something in return but nothing came out. "...Ruka's quite the nice name too." For a moment she watched as the boy dug into his bag, seemingly dry and intact compared to Ruka. He pulled out a jumper, it looked around her size and he kept motioning for her to put it on, she wasn't looking for a problem so the girl obliged. "Thank you..."
The boy was off though, trailing down the shore, he looked happy, he seemed happy. Saoirse trailed behind the boy, who began to question her motives for coming down to the lake. "I don't know really, nature's just a calming thing for me and I hadn't been to the lake in...I think that it's...well been since the start of the year. The cold's never really been problem either, after years of feeling like your coldblooded it just feels natural. Maybe I should come down here more often." She looked at the boy, trying to turn the conversation focus onto him.
