Platform 9 3/4
Matisse looked around King's Cross Station, pushing a luggage cart that carried her trunk and a few other bags of supplies that hadn't all quite fit inside the trunk. Her parents were both there to see her off, all of them having received a very detailed explanation of how the magical platform worked to ensure they wouldn't have difficulties figuring it out. They moved to the barrier between platforms 9 and 10, furtively checked around themselves to make sure nobody was watching. Just as promised, moments later they had all sunk cleanly through the bricks and found themselves at an additional train platform labeled "Platform 9 3/4."
"We made it," her mother breathed with a relieved sigh. "And we're nice and early so you have plenty of time to get situated."
"Now Matisse," her father said leaning down to speak more directly into her listening device. "Don't let any of the other kids treat you badly. The nice professor that helped us with everything made it very clear you belong here just as well as everyone else. If anything happens write us immediately and I'll come there myself to sort it out if I have to."
Matisse shook her head. "It's okay dad, I'll be fine," she said in a quiet voice. "I'm sure it'll be great."
"Show these magic people how it's done," her mother said with a sharp nod. "I expect you to get good grades and behave well. Do the family proud."
"But don't be afraid to throw a punch if you have to," her dad followed up. She sighed. Her parents were always a bit overprotective of her. It would be kind of nice to have some space. Plus maybe she'd make decent friends for once. Friends who didn't think she was weird just because weird things happened around her, or because she needed listening devices. Wasn't friendship supposed to be magical, after all? In a school for magic, surely it must be.

Jaxon had finally arrived to the famed station of the British Wizarding World, platform 9 3/4, the hidden magical platform where all students of Hogwarts go to to begin their journey towards the famous School for Witchcraft and Wizardry, as he stares in awe at the platform, at all the new students eager to get onto the train, the Hogwarts express, crowding the platform, hugging their parents, some too excited to go, others not wanting to let go of their parents, Jaxon's parents let out a small sigh.
"Look at this Holly, they seem to be letting more and more muggle borns into the school, you can practically smell the lack of magic in their parents." His father sneered, his parents, Holly and George Grayson, George's voice was quiet, low, it was hard to hear him, especially over the train and the crowd of new students saying goodbye to their parents and making friends, all due to a curse that affects him and his children. Holly did not suffer the same curse, as the curse came from his father, as was common among many pure blood families, the two were quiet prejudice against muggles and muggle born
"Now George, at least they're learning their magic, if they prove their worth then they can't be all too bad now." His mother, Holly, interjected, they weren't the cruellest of people towards non pure bloods, but they definitely had a obvious bias and gross opinion of them, Jaxon resented this of his family, and has tried to make sense of their logic, but failed, along with failing to sway them to be more kind.
"I just... hope I can get better.. with my magic..." Jaxon spoke, speaking in a slow way, his voice also just as quiet as his father's, Jaxon was always weak in his magic, but his parents was sure the school can grow his abilities, they give him a pat on the back.
"Son, don't worry, we're sure it will help, just remember, you're a Grayson, our family has always been strong, that means you will be too." He gives one last pat before waving his son off, Holly and George then step through the barrier, leaving Jaxon behind, alone. Jaxon looks around the platform, he was starting to panic, when his parents were here the crowd didn't seem so bad, but now that he's alone, it's starting to set in, he hated crowds, larger the crowd, the worse, especially noisy ones, where he can't even hear himself on top of his already quiet voice, he started to walk, his footsteps near silent, he was starting to shake, maybe the train will be nicer, quieter, less crowded, he sweats slightly, barely paying attention before he accidentally bumped into a family, he barely makes a noise as he backs up, looking at the people he bumped into.
"I'm so sorry... I... wasn't paying attention... please forgive me.." He speaks out, trying to put on his loudest voice, it was annoying having to raise his voice so he can be on a regular talking volume like anyone else, he fiddles with his fingers, still feeling panicked by the crowds, and having accidentally bumping into people, he just hoped they weren't mean people.

Matisse patted the boy on the shoulder lightly. She wasn't sure if her hearing devices were malfunctioning (could magical devices even malfunction?) but she could hardly hear his voice even though it looked like he was straining himself to be loud. Only her many years of lip reading allowed her to catch what he said.
"You're fine don't worry," she said with a small small. She tapped her hearing device and then flinched as the sound came through excessively loud. "Um sorry, my hearing aid...I mean my...my listening device, it's new so I'm not totally used to it yet. But um you don't have to worry about it. It's really crowded here, I wasn't expecting there to be so many people."
Her dad gave her a thumbs up, and her mom patted the top of her head.
"We'll let you go on with your new friend then, Matisse. Don't forget to write to us this evening!" her dad said.
"Yes do let us know how the first day goes," her mom instructed. "Remember to listen to all your professors and do well in your classes. Just because you're in a magical school doesn't mean I don't expect you to apply yourself properly."
"I know mom," Matisse assured her mother. Her parents gave one final hug then disappeared back through the barrier.

Jaxon look at the family, the way they spoke, the way they interacted, they seemed very nice, they didn't seem to mind too much, or know it wasn't a big deal, about him bumping into them, he looks at the girl, looking at the device for her ear, it was quite interesting, he never had the chance to see a item like that before, he didn't know many people who were deaf after all, nor has he read about it, but it intrigued him quite a bit, he gave a small nod to her, he was still shaking slightly from his fear of the crowd.
"That's... really interesting... I wonder how it works.." *He thinks outloud, wanting to learn a bit more about it, but maybe another time, if he even sees her again, then something calmed his nerves a bit, something her dad said, "new friend." he then thinks to himself, Friend? Do they want me to be her friend? He looks at the parents again, and their clothing, they were muggles for sure, if his parents knew he made a friend with a muggle born, they, wouldn't exactly be the happiest or proudest parents, however, this may show them that no matter where you're from, you are still a person, and besides, while he didn't plan on making many friends to lead a quiet life, a friend doesn't sound too bad either. He watches as her parents go back through the barrier, he then turns his attention back to the girl.
"Um...I... forgot to introduce... myself... my name is Jaxon... Jaxon Grayson" He tries to raise his voice a bit more for her, he hated having to raise his voice more, but he wanted to make a kind first impression to a potential new friend.

Matisse tilted her head slightly as he spoke to her, focusing on reading his lips while he spoke. He still seemed like he was straining to speak, like it took a lot of effort to project the words, but it still wasn't coming through her hearing devices very well. She would wonder if she'd turned the volume down on them if not for everything else sounding the same as before. It was almost like someone had turned the volume down on Jaxon specifically, and only Jaxon. Maybe he had a cold?
"If you're sick and it hurts to talk, you don't have to use your voice," she said just in case that was what was going on. She tapped her own lips. "I'm really good at reading lips so I'll be able to manage as long as I can see your face, okay? I'm Matisse Ellison by the way, it's nice to meet someone else around my age. I'm really new to all this magic stuff so...it would be nice to have a friend, if you want to be my first?"
She held her hand out to him.
He looked a bit nervous, like he didn't like crowds. That was okay, she didn't really like crowds either since it was harder for her to tell who was talking or what people were saying with so much noise all at once. She used to turn her cochlear implants off in crowds like this, but hadn't wanted to miss anything. Plus the magical listening devices she had now were better at sorting sounds even from large groups like this one.

Jaxon looks at her, she seemed very caring, she doesn't know him and she's concerned about if he has a cold, then heard that she can read lips, this does make things a lot easier, she's able to know what he's saying a lot easier, he doesn't have to try and raise his voice to be heard, as long as she's looking at him that is. Jaxon looks at her hand, gently taking it and shaking it, it was nice, getting to know someone, that isn't his siblings, there were times where he interacted with children from other pure blood families, but that usually ends up being, very dull, or straight up offensive, but here, he didn't feel that, he was able to have a proper conversation.
Jaxon lowers his voice back to his regular "talking" voice, making his voice a quiet level "I'm not sick... sorry... it's a.. curse.. my family are all forced to be quiet.. in basically everything.. He informs her, hoping that wasn't, weird, especially to a muggle born that never interacted with magic, what if this puts her off from the wizarding world, move her away from magic in fear of curses, it may also interest her, but curses are a scary thing.

Matisse watched him intently as he explained. She could tell that speaking this way was much easier on him, he was no longer straining to speak. Even the magical device couldn't fully pick up what he was saying exactly, but she was able to read it easily enough that it didn't matter.
"A family curse?" she mused out loud thoughtfully. When she'd learned that magic was real she'd wondered what exactly that could mean. What could magic make possible that she hadn't considered possible before, both good and bad? She'd read through all the course materials out of sheer curiosity and attempted to peak into some of the other books in the bookshop.
There had been some discussion on curses and counter curses, jinxes, hexes, and the differences between them, but not a whole lot mentioned about curses that could target an entire family line. How did that work exactly? Was it based on blood, and if so was the curse placed specifically onto certain DNA somehow, kind of like genetic traits passed down in families? Could it be exacerbated if carriers of the curse interbred in the way that some genetic problems were worsened if two carriers of the gene had children?
Most important of all though was whether or not her new friend was going to be alright. Curses sounded like a bad thing to her muggle-raised mind. After all in fairy tales and such they were always highly problematic.
"Does it hurt? The curse? Are you okay?" she wasn't completely sure how things like that worked.

Jaxon shook his head in response to her question, it was a valid question and concern, he expected her to not know anything about curses, or most magic in general, being raised in a muggle world, far from any magic, wizardry and witchcraft.
"It doesn't hurt.. no... all it does is make us quiet... not just speaking... it's like a barrier... affecting just our bodies, and it... makes whatever is inside that barrier... quieter." He tries his best to explain it to her, he doesn't understand it much himself after all, his parents haven't told him too much past its history, how it came to be, but nothing more than that, he hated it, but his father and siblings don't seem to mind much about it, in fact they seemed to like it, like whoever caused the curse gave them a gift, why would someone do that, give a gift to someone you hate, he didn't understand, believing there must be something else to it, but he can't be sure. "Anyways it's really nice to meet you.. Matisse... I never met a muggle born before... only other pure bloods like me... this is... a very nice change of pace.." He tells her, he looks to the train, they should probably hop onto it soon before it leaves them behind and they have to forget about getting to Hogwarts on time, they can talk on the train, a friend to sit next to, to chat, this was very exciting to Jaxon.

Matisse looked around at the crowd. Most of the students seemed to be filtering onto the train now, only a handful of them were still saying goodbyes. She didn't see Jaxon's parents around anywhere, and hers had already stepped back through the barrier, so it was probably more than time to get going.
"I'm glad you're mostly okay. Don't worry about the sound stuff okay? I'm used to not being able to hear super well so it's not gonna bother me," she explained to her new friend. "And sorry in advance if I don't pronounce things completely right. I'm still learning how to make my mouth make the right sounds all the time."
The train whistle blew, and she assumed that was some kind of last call warning.
"Oh crap, we gotta get going." She still had his hand in a handshake and instead of letting go, she tugged him through the crowd behind her as she pushed past people to get to one of the train cars. There was no way they were going to get left behind, she was too excited to learn about magic to let that happen. Some adult helped get their luggage on and then there they were, standing inside one of the train cars as the whistle blew once more. She was panting and grinning, cheeks flushed with exertion and excitement.
"We made it!" She said happily.

Jaxon looked around, at the students saying goodbye to their parents, the platform was getting less crowded, which for sure made him feel more relaxed, but of course they have to quickly get onto the train before it left them. Looking back at Matisse, listening to her words, he gives a small smile to her, she was so kind, it felt great having a proper friend.
"You don't have to worry... you're doing a good job so far.." He informs her, then, the whistle blows, he looks at the train, looks like they really got to get going now, just as was about to let go of her hand from the handshake, he suddenly felt himself being pulled and tugged by her, letting out a inaudible yelp, he grabs onto his luggage as he follows her, almost tripping over his feet, after the adult helps their luggage on board, they hop onto the train themselves, Jaxon sighs in relief, looking at the platform, even before reaching the school, he already made a friend, he'll just have to try and make his parents accept her as his friend, and he hopes they get into the same house, however, his parents, and himself, expect to get into Slytherin, and he wasn't sure how common muggle born Slytherins are, and how welcomed they will be, he just has to hope.
