In art class I was asked this, Explain how a piece that does not have a clear subject matter might qualify as art. And I had now clue how to answer it so I did this

A piece that doesn't have a clear subject matter might qualify as art because it could evoke emotion and different feelings from someone. People could see different shapes and objects and see the painting or art piece differently. Certain colours in the art piece may evoke emotion. Like the colour blue may evoke sadness or calmness from someone. Or the colour red may evoke the emotion anger or if you combine yellow and red and someone may become hungry.

True art expresses the good, the true, and the beautiful. Consider a painting of the sea. Nothing else, just a huge canvass depicting the waves far below --- no land, no sky, no boats, no birds, no clear subject. Even this evokes the truth of Nature: the sea is good in that it provides homes for all kinds of creatures, it gives us our weather and our climate, it provides all kinds of delicious food; and the sea is true in that it is a true manifestation of the fundamental laws of physics, of motion, of heat transfer, and chemistry; and it's beautiful simply because it is, from its calm and serene surface to its mighty depths to its terrifying gales and monstrous waves! And I would say your answer is correct because, even though you used different words, you noted quite correctly that art evokes emotions. And those emotions are reflections of the good, the true, and the beautiful in that which is depicted.
