Katrina sat engulfed in her reading. Now, a day in the library was a normal thing. Two years had passed and Katrina had-most likely- spent 90% of her time in here. The musky aroma, the crinkle of yellowed pages, the sunlight filtered through the stained glass, the heavy weight of a book placed perfectly in the palms of her hands, it all felt more like home than anything. Her shoulders were hunched, her legs crossed legs supporting a heavy volume. If one were to watch her eyes they would be frightened at the speed of them zooming from one edge of the page to the other as fast as lightning.
Katrina didn't register the hum of the school below her, or the speed at which her fingers were turning the pages, she only saw the sights, sounds and smells of the book she was entranced by. She saw lush forests that rose to high frozen peaks. She saw rushing rivers overfull with fresh glacier water. She saw a leage of warriors primed for battle. She saw them rushing through the trees in strict formation. She heard the drawing of the swords. Witnessed the battle. And was deep in that world.
The 12-year-old was currently up-to-date on her new work for the school year. Classes were rolling and in full blast. She had finished her work efficiantly and flawlessly as soon as school ended and now had until curfew to be in the world of Sir Napiol and Lady Mandar.
A loud swoosh startled Katrina from her book. She glanced up to see a magnificant orange blob dart past. Katrina droped the book and lost her spot, cursing (a word that her mother would spank her if she heard Katrina say that) and craned her head back. At second glance, the blob was indeed an owl. You would think that a child would be accostomed, after two years, to owls delivering letters. The adorible little thing had large black pupils incased in iris' of golden yellow. It cocked it's head and swooped down behind a book case.
Katrina, now intruiged, stached her book in her satchel and went to see where it went. She was curious to see where it went and anxious to meet the owner. She quickly pawed her way through the rows still very much imagining herself in the book. Creeping through the trees covered in volumes. She shook her head clearing away the fantasy.
An owl call urged Katrina forward. She turned the corner to see another student and thier owl.

The quick sound of a pen clicking could be heard through the girls dorms. There was none present, but one girl, with red curly hair cascading down her shoulders and over her grey jumper. River had been sitting at her desk for almost an hour, and all she had managed to do during that time, was to annoy herself with the continuous click, click, click, click...@Katrina Walker
She had given up on the entire concept of quills and ink, she thought it was so inconvenient compared to a normal pen. She’d still use a quill now and then, but today was a pen-sort of day.
Her cold grey eyes stared blankly at the yellow, clear sheet of parchment laid out over her wooden desk. She just didn’t know what to write. There was nothing that would make sense to her, and her motivation had left her a good while ago. Still, she just had to try, her conscience would not leave her alone unless she at least tried.
Finally, giving up her plan on writing this letter, she grabbed hold of the parchment, and brought her pen as she abruptly rose from her chair, and started heading for the exit from the common room. As she neared the door, a soft hoot sounded from her bedpost. “You’ve been such a pain to bring around lately, Hoot”, she said, looking stern at the little sunset coloured owl. He did a little impatient hop, and cocked his head. “Ugh fine, but promise me not to go flying off again would you?”, she shook her head and scoffed as the owl gracefully took off from the bedpost and landed on her left shoulder. The redhead turned around and walked out.
She passed students and professors in the corridors as she headed on in long strides. Her small feet hitting the floor with light taps. After a bit, she had reached the library, which was her current destination. If there was one place she could focus and let her creativity take over, it was here. There was something so safe about the atmosphere in this room, the way it was lit, and the way it smelled. Everything just made her feel like being productive.
She quickly walked along the many aisles of the library, her small fast footsteps could be heard echoing quietly between the shelves. She made her way to a nice little reading desk and sat down on the bench with her pen and parchment in hopes of finding something to write down. Sir-Little Hoot hopped down from her shoulder and danced around the table a little before he stopped and looked up at River. She gave him a little smile. To be honest, she didn’t even know if animals were allowed in the library, but at this point she didn’t really care all that much. He made her feel better, and that was enough for her to potentially be breaking some rules.
He broke eye contact and jumped swiftly off the table and continued through the air. River quickly got to her feet to look after where he went, but he quickly disappeared somewhere between the books. The ravenclaw sighed and shook her head. He better come back, I’m tired of running after him everywhere.
And sure enough, after a couple of minutes the little owl flew happily back and landed neatly on River’s narrow shoulders once more. She looked at him with a stern look to her eyes. «You know, if you don’t stop doing that I’ll have to get you a leash or something», she said and shook her head again with a slight chuckle.
When River lifted her gaze from her owl, she noticed a student standing there, looking over at her and Hoot.
«Uhm, hey?», she said and kept her eyes on the girl, wondering how long she’d been standing there, and why she hadn’t announced her arrival but simply kept quiet standing there. «You okay?», River asked her, and cocked her brows slightly.

@River DewlightKatrina stood and watched the girl. She realized that she might look a little desolate. The tired eyes, vacant look, dark circles it might all look a little daunting. She had, admittedly, not had a lot of sleep lately and it was getting to her. She had spent her time reading or with her kitten, Boomerang. It wasn't them that was keeping her up-- it even wasn't the stress of school. It was the feeling of lack of friends. The guilt of mistakes long past.
Katrina shrugged of the feeling. "Ya, I-I'm fine. Just tired, that's all a guess," Katrina smiled and took a few steps over, "Beautiful owl. I'm Katrina by the way," Katrina took a few steps over and lifted her hand to pet the owl. She paused to make sure it was okay with River and patted it's head softly.
Katrina had a weird thing with petting owls. It was just like petting kittens, just softer. They usually cooed and it was adorably cute.
Katrina's jaw almost dropped to the floor as Boomerang walked in. Her kitten had an uncanny ability to find her in the oddest places. He jumped up on the table next to her and Katrina scooped him up into her arm. "Boomerang, what are youdoing here!" Katrina pet him and shook her head.

River watched the girl cautiously as she stepped a little closer and explained her worn down look. River knew that feeling, sleeping was never something she found easy, all those thoughts wiring up around in her head kept her up for hours upon hours. Not that getting any sleep would help her appearance-wise at all. The sickly pale skin, ice cold eyes with dark circles making her look tired no matter how much sleep she’d gotten. They never went away, and to be honest, River couldn’t care less about her looks. The only thing about her that made her look a little less dead was her flaming red, curly hair that rippled down her narrow shoulders.
It was the same with her clothes. They weren’t dirty or torn or anything, but she didn’t spend ages planning her outfits, and would usually pick the first clean jumper and denim pants to slip on. Her clothes covered her thin frame well, and her small hands were warmly tucked into the overly long sleeves on her jumper.
The girl stepped up and glanced at River as she began petting Hoot. A part of the ravenclaw wanted to lash out with defensive words, warning the girl to keep her distance and not interfere. She managed to keep her cool, on the outside at least. It was a bad day to catch River on, she wasn’t in a good mood, but she was still determined to leave an alright impression. The girl introduced herself, «River», the ravenclaw responded quickly, and turned back to the table looking down onto her little piece of parchment. A moment passed before her hand quickly grabbed hold of the paper and crumpled it up slowly. She dropped it lazily into a nearby trashcan and let her stern gaze rest on the tabletop for a moment.
The little owl on the desk cocked his head curiously up at the girl in front of him. He did a little hop to the left and suddenly, with a bustle he leaped off the edge and landed on a nearby shelf looking down at what had interrupted his cuddles. A cat had managed to jump up onto the desk without warning, as cats do.
River looked up confused as to what had caused the mild disturbance and let a quiet scoff escape her lips. Katrina seemed very familiar with the cat River understood from her first reaction to the animals appearance. «I don’t think cats are allowed on the tables» , River said coldly, not taking her eyes off the empty parchment on the desk. The owl sent a glare down upon the cat as he sat perched on top of a high shelf above them.

Katrina almost winced as she introduced herself as 'River'. For a split-second she debated asking if it was a nickname. Then she stopped because River seemed to bristle. On the outside she was cool, but Katrina wondered if she had down something wrong. She brushed it off and wondered if she should leave. Then River snapped about the kitten on the table and Katrina quickly took her off.
"Sorry, sometimes I think Boomerang stalks me," she debated adding something like, 'She follows me everywhere and watches me during potions'. The more the thought about it. The more she doubted everything. Katrina was so tired and confused that she decided not to say anything at all. River's owl seemed to glare at Boomerang and Katrina stooped down to set her kitten on the ground.
"Go back to my room," she told him, aware that he would most likely go follow someone else. It actually worked for he ran away. Katrina watched his little legs as he darted. He luckily took the cue to leave and disappeared around the corner and hopefully out the door. She sighed and wished he didn't cause so many problems.
Katrina sighed again quietly and moved to a small table over to the left. She sat herself down and opened the book from her satchel. It seemed rude to leave and she also had the feeling that she wasn't needed at the moment. The words seemed to blur on the page and Katrina sat her head in her hands. She pinched the bridge of her nose for the headache blooming behind her eyes was killing her. Lack of sleep added so much drama to her day.
Katrina had been falling down the stairs almost every morning. Headaches and stomach aches had been a daily problem. Her grades were hovering and almost dipping down. Katrina had been even losing weight and her dark circles were deepening. The things that were keeping her up was mostly just thinking. The side-affects of her sleep loss were getting more serious.
She closed the book again. Reading was impossible for her right now. Katrina tried and failed to push away the thoughts that creeped in when she was doing nothing. Where was her brother? Was he alright? Would she ever see him again? What about her cousins? Did they ever think of her? What happened to her house? Had it been rebuilt? Did anyone live in it? Did her brother live there? Had her brother been getting any of her letters? She should be writing another. Did he like the letters? Why wouldn't he write any back? She felt her stupid sleep deprived tears burn behind her eyes. She blinked them away and brought her hands down from her face. What was she even doing there?

River listened to the girl speak of the cat without raising her eyes to look at them. She kept them staring at the paper on the wood before her. Boomerang was the cats name, she pondered to how in the world that name came to be. Not that her owls name was too much better either.
After Katrina had asked the cat to go to her room, River could hear the light footsteps of the cat grow faint as it clearly made its way out of their position. The ravenclaw glanced up at the girl as she moved over and found a seat by the table, not far away from where River was hunched over the desk.
River was good at reading people, at least usually when she was in a good mood. Now though, her mind was swirling around like a hurricane, but at the same time she didn’t have the concentration to ponder on any of the thoughts that popped up in her mind. All the words she had previously written on the parchment had just begun swimming about, creating stupid questions of which River knew she’d never get answers to.
From the quick glance at Katrina, River gathered that she was not in the best mood either. Perhaps the dark of winter was making everyone sad, or tired for that sake. River had for sure started longing for the summer sun to peak out for a long time now, even though her fragile dhampir skin could not take it all that well, she still missed the bright days and sun-lit rooms.
As the cat had made its way to somewhere else, the little owl dared to flutter down from its spot up on the shelves and landed carefully in front of the other girl. He did a little hop and cocked his head as he looked up at her, clearly understanding she was not all okay. He had a soft heart, River knew this very well. He was a good judge of personality too, and would carefully pick those he got involved with. «Come here Hoot, don’t bother the girl» , the redhead said and nodded carefully toward the two of them. Hoot didn’t budge, he only sent River a still look before turning back to the girl. «I apologize, he gets like this sometimes» , she added and gave Katrina a quick apologetic smile. Whether the smile was genuine or not River didn’t really know herself.

@River DewlightKatrina sat in the chair with her hands at her face for a while. She was startled when the owl, whom River had called Hoot, landed beside her. His adorable eyes seemed to stare right into her soul and tell her, It's okay. Though everything wasn't okay. But his fluffy self did seem to calm her down.
Katrina took a stray glance back at River and found her staring at the paper. Katrina felt bad that she hadn't noticed something was wrong before. She was typically a good judge of emotions-- not so much of character though. River was hard to read, she seemed annoyed? Angry? Upset? Maybe just tired?
Just thinking of sleep had Katrina yawning. She could certainly do with a nap, as the older Gryffindor's seemed to take at this time. Sleep was getting harder to come by and the weight of it all was pressing hard on the young girl. Her guilt was something that was unhealthy for a 12-year-old to carry; Thora, Pierre, and Teiki: all people that Katrina felt that she had let down. Thora was the only one that seemed to be still bothered by it... but Katrina still felt that she needed to apologize, or start fresh, or something. Her questioning of everything came flooding back and she almost missed River saying anything.
River nodded towards Hoot and apologized for him. Katrina looked up at the fuzzy creature that had landed beside her. River seemed more kind now. She still seemed, what Katrina thought was, tired-- but now she had a smile on her face.
"Oh, don't worry about it." She paused and debated saying something more as words spilled out, "I mean, I can't judge-- you just saw what happened with Boomerang." It seemed right to bring it up, but it was apparent River had something against her kitten.
Boomerang did have an odd knack for finding her everywhere. At this point, there was little she could do to stop it. She would lock him in her dorm room, and by lunch he would jump into her lap while she was eating alone. Katrina would shoo him away, by the time school was over, he would find her reading in the library. So far, she hadn't gotten in trouble for it (thank goodness) but it was still worrisome. Sometimes he had perfect timing, other times, not so much.
Katrina looked back to River and gave a small smile, she didn't want this to become another thing to worry about. Instead, she was ready to make a friend.

@Katrina WalkerRiver’s eyes landed on the little owl sitting nicely on the tabletop in front of her. He knew he was cute, and he knew how to use it to his advantage. Sometimes though, he overestimated his intimidation skills and doesn’t make a good guard-owl that is for sure. «Boomerang huh, that your cat?», River asked the girl quietly and nodded in the direction of which the cat had made his leave. He was cute too, but River hadn’t always gotten along too well with cats. Bot owls either for that sake, but Hoot was an exception. She reached to the back of her neck and felt the scar from that one crazy time in the owlery. It hadn’t ended well for any of the students involved, but it had cost River a trip to the infirmary. River had always loved animals, but that doesn’t necessarily mean she always got along with all of them.
River looked up at the girl as Hoot was trying to make his little cheery dance-moves. She suddenly realized she should probably have introduced herself. It’s only polite when the other person has already, «I’m River by the way», she said, and did her best to put on a kind smile. «So, what brings you to the library?», she asked soon after, hoping to escape some of the slightly awkward atmosphere that surrounded them as they sat there in the quiet library.

River's mood seemed to shift drastically, though it was a good thing. It was subtle, but now Katrina felt a bit more at ease. Her emotions were still running high-- but they were slowing down now. Her torrent of worries slowly spun away for now.
"Yes, Boomerang's my 'stalker-like kitten'" she paused and then added more, "I swear, he follows me everywhere" It didn't seem like a time to tell a story so the lioness shortened it into a funny anecdote. "Every morning I leave him in my dorm-- sometimes the door is even locked-- then by the time lunch comes around, he jumps in my lap and scares me half-to-death" Even though she was the one telling the story, the Gryffindor couldn't help but laugh at it.
Katrina's eyes lit up and her heart melted a little when Hoot began to dance. At least, that is what it seemed like. As much as she loved owls, kittens were still her all time favorite. Though, Hoot came runner-up to Boomerang.
What brings her to the library? Katrina gave a thoughtful pause, collecting her thoughts. Her mind scanned the last few moments and then she remembered. "Just some reading..." her hand snuck into the pouch at her side and held up the medieval novel she had been reading previous to spotting the owl fly in.
Katrina tucked her hair behind her ear and stood up. She took a seat across from River at the table. If they had known each other better, she would have sat beside her-- at the moment, that seemed a little too much.
Even as the lioness was learning to stand out more, there were still very distinct boundaries in her mind. She had gone from a shy girl to someone who reached out an introduced herself to people. That was some of the problem with sleeping that Katrina faced nightly. Stress and anxiety seemed to creep up behind her.
Before her mind could delve in further, Katrina mentally shook her head and focused on River. "What brings you here?" a touch of a smile reached her lips, and her eyes-- though they hardly ever did-- seemed to smile as well.
