As a muggle born, I have always e-mailed or sent sms or even phone called in order to communicate with people. Well that doesn't mean muggles don't write letters! I remember my grandparents telling me stories about how they needed to write letters, carry them to the post office, stick stamps on the envelope and post them, in order to connect with people. These were known as the postal service. But now I am awe-struck to see owls carrying letters in Hogwarts!?
For the first time when I came here, I was really confused about how I will communicate with my parents who live in the muggle world until I was informed that we can send letters via owls. I was very excited when I heard this thing. I sat on my four poster bed and took out my new quills, bottle of ink, parchments and envelope from my trunk which I had kept under the bed.
I love the smell of books, old papers and letters and therefore I brought the parchments close to my face and smelled them. It was similar to the smell of the shedded leaves rolling on the ground, carried by the cold and dry air of the Autumn season. For a few minutes I was lost into the thoughts of those days when I used to take a walk around the streets filled with the sound of rustling of leaves on those pleasant autumn mornings.
I carried my things to the common room, sat on the chair kept at one corner. I started writing a letter for my parents. I almost poured my heart out and wrote about every single experience I had on my way to Hogwarts, the great Hogwarts express, the boats which we took to reach the Hogwarts Castle, the Great Hall lighted up with candles and chandeliers, decorated with portraits and other magical items and the magical spiral staircase. I told them how the sorting ceremony took place and how a talking hat decided my house in Hogwarts.
Finally, I finished writing my letter, put it in an envelope, sealed it and headed to the owlery. There I found several types of owls hooting and screeching in different cages. I saw a large brown owl and decided to make it my messanger for that day. I gave it my letter and saw it flying away firmly with my letter.

Ellie had been wandering the castle aimlessly, as she so often did when her nerves were too much to sit still. Somehow, her steps had carried her up the long, winding path to the Owlery. She told herself she just wanted to see it for herself—the high stone room, the smell of straw and feathers, the sound of wings beating against the drafty air. When she pushed open the heavy door, she froze. She wasn’t alone. Across the chamber stood another first-year, quill ink still faintly smudged on her fingers. A large brown owl had just taken flight from her hand, a letter clutched tightly in its talons as it disappeared into the bright sky. Ellie watched, mesmerized, before she realized she might be staring. She shifted her books awkwardly in her arms, her voice catching before she managed to speak.
“Hi.” she spoke softly, her words almost swallowed by the sound of wings overhead. “How are you?”
Ellie swallowed, taking a few tentative steps closer, her shoes crunching lightly on scattered straw.
“I’m Ellie. Hufflepuff. I’ve never sent an owl before. I mean… I’ve seen my parents send them, but I’m not sure I’d even know what to write. I actually need to write them soon…” She hesitated, eyes flicking toward the open sky.
“Sorry, I'm rambling.”
Her fingers fidgeted against the spine of her book, nervous but hopeful.
“What’s your name? Are you a first year… like me?”
For the first time that day, Ellie wasn’t thinking about how out of place she felt. Instead, she was caught up in curiosity—and the quiet hope that this stranger might become her very next real friend at Hogwarts.

Jerry happily skipped down his way to the Owlerly, humming a tune. He had just finished writing a letter for his mum's birthday and was about to send it. Immersed in his own thoughts, he didn't see the girl in front of him past the stairs. He crashed into her and tumbled onto the floor with a painful thud.
He quickly picked himself from the floor and brushed off the dust, bones and who knows what else that got on his robes. That's when he noticed his pair of cracked glasses next to his feet.
"Oh no!" Jerry said worriedly, picking up his glasses and inspecting them. His dad was going to kill him! These glasses had been nearly 40 pounds.
Jerry inspected them, they were split cleanly in half; perhaps it would be easy to fix.
He pocketed them and then smiled shyly at the girl he had just tumbled into.
"Oop, I'm so so sorry about that," He apologized to her as he offered his hand out.
That's when he noticed the other girl in the room. Great, now he just embarrassed himself in front of 2 people. Say goodbye to having any more friends he thought to himself.

Ellie blinked at the sudden crash of limbs and robes, startled out of her nervous little conversation. Her eyes darted to the boy picking himself up, her hand flying instinctively to cover the small laugh that slipped out when his glasses snapped themselves back together with Reparo. She wasn’t laughing at him, more at how quickly he cast the spell. She shifted her books against her chest and stepped forward, her smile shy but genuine.
“That was sick,” Ellie said, her voice soft but steady this time.
“I’ve only read about that spell, but you totally did it. On your glasses, too, those are expensive.” She tilted her head, curiosity flickering in her eyes.
“Are you a first year, as well?” She glanced between the boy, who was still brushing dust from his robes, and the girl by the window, whose owl had only just vanished into the sky. It felt strange, and a little wonderful, to not be standing alone anymore. Ellie’s cheeks warmed, but she pressed on, determined not to lose her nerve.
“I’m Ellie, by the way. I'm a Hufflepuff.” She gave a little wave with the hand not holding her books. “Whats your name?” She let the question hang in the air, her tone hopeful rather than demanding. For once, her nervous fidgeting stilled. Maybe, just maybe, this was the beginning of something good.

Ada trotted down to the Owlery, a letter for her mother, clutched in her hand. Even though she had a cat and not a owl, she spent a large amount of her time in the cool, dusty smelling tower. She expected the Owlery to be empty as usual, so it was a surprised to see that there were already three people there.
There ware two girls who looked about the same age as she was ant there was a boy whom she recognized as Jerry, a Gryffindor first year like her. His robes were a bit dusty. "Um, hi." Ada said awkwardly, greeting the group with a small wave.
One of the girls waved back. Ada walked towards one of the schools tawny owls perched on the rafters, feeling extremely awkward. She coaxed the owl onto her arm so she could tie the role of parchment to it's feathery leg.
She carried him to the window, the owl beat his wings, and after a slight pressure on her arm, the owl was airborne, with the letter securely fastened to his leg. "Um, hi, again, I guess?" Ada said, giving a small smile and waving a bit.

Ellie hugged her books tighter against her chest as yet another voice joined the Owlery. She turned, her eyes landing on the new girl with the parchment-stained fingers and the small, hesitant smile.
“Hi,” Ellie said again, this time a little more confidently, giving the girl a small wave back. Her cheeks warmed as she realized how strange they must all look, four first years suddenly crammed into the Owlery, letters and owls and awkward silences between them. She glanced at Jerry, who was still brushing himself off, then back to Ada.
“It's cool that you have your own owl,” she said, nodding toward the window where the owl had just disappeared into the pale sky.
“The one I've been using just keeps circling the castle and returning the letter.” A laugh escaped her lips, quiet but genuine. She wasn’t sure if the joke was any good, but she hoped it made the girl feel less awkward. Ellie shifted her books and tried again.
“I'm Ellie,” she said, the introduction starting to feel a little easier now.
“We were just, um…” She trailed off, realizing she didn’t actually know what they were doing beyond all bumping into each other.
“…meeting, I guess?” she finished, looking between Jerry and the first girl who’d been sending her letter. Her lips curled into a small smile.
“Maybe the Owlery’s just… where everyone's hanging out today.” Her words hung there, half a question, half an invitation, an opening for the others to step into, if they wanted to.

Jerry brushed off last bit of dust on himself and looked up. He had noticed a fellow Gryffindor walk in, only now that he realized that it was Ada, a first year that he was familiar with.
"Hi!" he greeted her enthusiastically "Was that your own owl that you sent out? I thought Nox was your pet?"
Then he turned back to Ellie, "I'm Jerry. Jerry Brown. I'm in Gryffindor by the way, you said you were in Hufflepuff? Is it fun there?"
Remembering the reason why he was in here the first place he hurried to his owl, Aramis and attached his letter to him.
"Now Ara, don't stop for any frogs or rats alright? I need Mum to get this as soon as possible. Understood?"
Aramis gave a confident hoot and flew out of the owlery. Jerry watched him for a bit thinking of how his Mum would like his card or not. He had enchanted it to explode into confetti when she opened it. A bit like a Howler, but a lot more fun.
He turned back to Ada and Ellie. He had just opened his mouth to speak when he noticed something.
"What was that?" Jerry asked. He hurried over to the door and peered down the long, stone stairs. He gasped with surprise at what he saw and quickly turned to the others.
"Guys, come quickly!!" He turned back to the stairs, not believing what he saw.

Ada rushed to the door and looked from over Jerry's shoulder and immediately understood Jerry's reaction. As she peered down the stairs her heart skipped a beet, she didn't know what to make of it. It seemed as she turned around at a sudden hooting and fluttering of wings as all the owls suddenly took flight in a sudden frenzy that the owls seemed to recognize something was wrong as well.
An owl was lying there, motionless on the stairs. As she looked at it more closely she saw a small brown package tied to its leg. This wouldn't have been of any significance to Ada except the fact that it was on the ground with no clear passage in other than through the whole castle and it seemed hurt. The owl gave a feeble hoot but didn't get up. This was stranger than strange. She blinked and gave her head a little shake to make sure she wasn't making things up and she hadn't just been hallucinating everything.
"The pour creature!" Ada said reaching out her hand but quickly withdrawing it, she had no idea what had happened. It could be dangerous. "How'd it even get over there?" she asked a puzzled after thought. Whatever had happened was unknown, and this was not the time to take risks.

Jessica was lost in her thoughts, staring blankly at the fluttering leaves outside the window. Her mind drifted far away until a sudden noise brought her back to her senses. She blinked a few times, realizing she had completely missed what was happening around her. Confused, she looked around and said, “Oh! Hey Ellie, I too am a first year.” Then, noticing Ada kneeling beside something on the ground, she frowned. “Ada, what happened to this owl?”
Ada looked up, worry written across her face. “I think it’s hurt, Jessica. It must have been attacked by some big animal.”
Without wasting a moment, Jessica exclaimed, “Let’s take it to the Hospital Wing!”
Jessica, Ada, and Jerry quickly lifted the injured owl and hurried through the long corridors of the castle. Their footsteps echoed as they ran, anxious and out of breath. When they finally reached the Hospital Wing, and the healer, immediately took the owl in her care.
As they waited, Jessica turned to the others, brushing a loose strand of hair from her face. “Hey, I’m Jessica,” she said with a small smile. “Since we’re all first years… maybe we could be a group of best friends?” she added nervously, hoping they felt the same way.
