My feet seemed to move by themselves toward the Park. It was a place I took refuge in when all hope seemed lost. So it was fitting to go there: I had lost all hope of ever leaving the infernal house that had held me for two weeks.

What a pain. As if being locked up with all those idiot Hufflepuffs had been a good idea. As if I had tried to sympathize with them to fit in. No. I'd rather die.

This whole thing had been a mistake. A lamentable mistake. And I fully intended to rectify it, no matter the means. If I had to threaten someone, I would.

My life was already rotten enough without threatening someone becoming another one of my occupations. But if I had no choice, I would.

Leaning against a tree, I closed my eyes, my breath almost ragged. A few tears threatened to fall, but as usual, I would hold them back until I burst. I refused to give in to please my sister.

I had to be strong. Had the Sorting Hat placed me in Hufflepuff? Well, I was going to be the brightest, bravest, and most cunning student to prove to him that Ravenclaw, Gryffindor, or Slytherin would have been much better suited to my profile.

In the meantime, I paced the grounds, looking for someone I knew to see if an alliance with her was possible to escape this asylum. Finally, I spotted a Hufflepuff girl, whom I must have already crossed paths with in the corridors.

Approaching her, I held my breath before saying:

- Madeline?

The ground had become one of Maddy's favourite spot, mostly because it wasn’t the library and it wasn’t the common room. Both of those places were fine, but they were always crowded with people telling her to “shush” or “sit still” — two things she had no interest in doing. Out here, the air was wide and fresh, and she could sprawl across the grass however she pleased without a prefect giving her the bad look.
She had been there for a while already, lying flat on her back with her hands tucked beneath her head. Her wand balanced across her finger as she tried to see how long she could keep it spinning before gravity won. Each time it toppled, she snatched it with a laugh.

It wasn’t just the peace that pulled her out here. Madeline’s whole family had always been Gryffindors — loud, brave, with a tendency to throw themselves headfirst into whatever mess life offered. She had always thought she would end up in Gryffindor, following her family, but the hat had put her with the badgers. All she could feel was that this was a mistake.

She was not quiet and nice like the Hufflepuffs, she was daring and stupid and often came of mean because of her boldness. She didn’t belong here, she’d tell herself—except she also didn’t exactly know where “belong” was supposed to be yet.

She was lost in her thoughts and looking at the sky when a voice interrupted her petty thoughts,
- Madeline?

Madeline blinked and squinted up as a girl approached.

“Oh — Ruby, right?” she said, rolling onto her side and grinning, trying to keep the tone light. “What’s up? You look like something is disturbing you.”

She patted the grass beside her. “Sit if you want. Don’t worry, I don’t bite."

She looked over at her and said, "Common room got suffocating for you too?"
