Tangled in Yarn
Nova enjoyed the brisk walk down the halls of Hogwarts as she searched for an empty classroom to sit in. Her satchel bounced against her hip. curls swaying with each step she took down the empty hallway. Over the summer, along with learning a few handy skills here and there like sneaking around, she had a newfound interest in crocheting.
The girls she had seen in the park sat around in circles, making little stars and trinkets. When they had seen her, they had exchanged annoyed looks as if she were interrupting. Nova didn’t really care, but it had given her a small hit to her ego. Girls near her park were always rather rude, staying in little groups.
She always found it mesmerizing how they could make such cute animals and such just by doing a few loops with something that looked like Maui’s hook. Just smaller. She had gone to her local shop, searching for it. The shopkeeper, a kind old woman, had helped her find all the items she assumed she needed. She had sat for about an hour, just learning a few very basic stitches.
The creak of the door to the empty classroom snapped her out of her memories and she walked in, quickly settling into a seat not far from the entrance. She dumped out the few things in her satchel; yarn, a hook, and a small book just in case she got bored.

✽Avery couldn't remember the last time she had done crochet. Her grandmother had taught her the craft many years before when she was only six. Ever since then, she loved to create small little figures that used to sit in the window. Avery couldn't remember where those figures had gone. Probably disappeared like the rest of her things when her mother took her away from the one place that felt like home to her.
That's probably why she immediately took the chance to meet the girl crocheting in the classroom. The door creaked in protest as Avery pushed it open enough to slip inside. Avery didn't recognize the girl. At least, not at first. Her hair was blonde with bouncy curls. Avery smiled. She seemed nice enough, so Avery hoped she wouldn't mind if Avery watched.
"Hey. Are you crocheting? How cool!" Avery commented to the girl. Seeing her up close, Avery recalled possibly seeing her around. They obviously hadn't officially met, so why couldn't they get to know each other now?
"I'm Avery by the way. What's your name?"
Avery was fascinated by the way the girl's needle worked the yarn. She sighed internally as memories of doing little projects with her grandmother slowly came back to her. She missed those old times, and made a mental note to ask her grandma about where their crochet supplies had gone next time she saw her. She couldn't let such a relaxing hobby go to waste. ✽

Tangled in Yarn
Nova had been on the verge of going to war with the thing she called her yarn. It absolutely refused to listen or untangle. Just when she was about to stab at it with her hook again, she heard a creak from the classroom door and the unmistakeable sound of a student entering. She quickly looked up, not wanting to be caught in her predicament as the student, a pretty girl with brown hair down to her shoulders, greeted her with a cheerful, “Hey. Are you crocheting?”
Nova stared like a deer in headlights for a moment before snapping out of it and nodding in response. “Yeah! I just wanted to make something cute I could maybe give to someone.” Whoever that someone was, Nova had yet to figure out. She shuffled over in her seat in case the girl decided to join her. “I don’t think I’m succeeding, though.”
“Nice to meet you, Avery. I’m Nova,” she added, brushing a curl from her eyes and attempting to act like her entire craft project wasn’t falling apart in real time. She lifted up the small, blob-like thing she had so far. The yellow yarn she had chosen looked like a huge caterpillar curling into itself, which made her frown.
“Do you know how to do this? I learned it during the summer but I definitely forgot.” She looked at Avery with a small smile, who was watching her disaster with nostalgia. As Nova gave the yarn another not-so-gentle tug, it went rolling off the table before Nova could grab it. Her eyes rolled so hard she felt they’d leave their sockets. “Damn.”

✽A smile spread across Avery's face when the girl mentioned that she was trying to make something cute to give to someone. She always loved it when people were like that. Willing to make someone's day with just a simple little gift. Avery made a mental note to try that sometime.
"That's a great idea, Nova!" Avery commented to the girl as she sat down.
Avery watched as the girl frowned at her work. To Avery, it was starting to come together. Avery wanted to ask what the project she was doing was going to become, then thought better of it. She didn't know the girl well enough to know how she would react. Even though Avery had good intentions behind the question, she had learned from experience that not everyone was willing to have help. If Nova didn't want help, Avery would respect that boundary set in place.
A smile lit Avery's face again when the girl asked if Avery knew how to crochet. Even though it had been years since she had last done crochet, she still remembered some of the things her grandmother had taught her on those rainy days. "The last time I crocheted was years ago, but I think if we work together, we may be able to figure this out!"
Avery gingerly picked up the ball of yarn that had fallen to the floor. Brushing it off, she placed it back onto the table. The yarn would do neither of them any good if it was dirty and tangled. Avery took a deep breath and said, "You ready to begin?" ✽

Nova blinked at the girl, Avery, as she sat down and complimented her idea. The stiffness in her shoulders relaxed, and she smiled at her as she sat down with her. "Oh, thanks," she replied, glancing at Avery while rummaging through her satchel until her fingers wrapped around another hook, which was sticking out of the tiny hole in the corner.
I could crochet a little flower to fix that hole, I think. She thought, a faint grin replacing the frown that was threatening to appear on her face. Nova turned back to Avery as she gingerly picked up the yarn, and the way she handled it made Nova feel slightly less like she was in a one-on-one duel with a string monster. It had gotten a few small dust bunnies but was clean otherwise, and she tutted exasperatedly. "You were on the floor for one second..." She mumbled with an eye roll.
Avery’s suggestion — “if we work together…” — made Nova crack a grin. “You sure you want to enter the battlefield?” she asked, gesturing to the tangled mess like it might lunge at them. “This thing has already won, like, two rounds.” Nova slid the other hook in Avery's direction with another smile. "If I stab this again though, don't tell anyone."
Staring at the yarn once again and picking up her own hook, Nova didn't feel so alone in this war of man Woman vs Yarn now that Avery was here. She may have had a companion and a weapon, but nothing could stand up to the manipulation tactics of tangled yarn.

✽The yarn was dusty from only a few moments under the table. Avery smiled as Nova scolded it. It was obvious that it was winning the war, but working together Avery knew that she and Nova would defeat the ball and create a masterpiece. Though it had won the majority of the battles, there was nothing that would stop them from completing their task.
Avery's smile broadened into a wide grin as the question of if Avery wanted to enter the battlefield left Nova's lips. Of course she wanted to join! What else would she do when she was already invested in the project. There was no turning back now! "Of course I'm willing to enter! We can't let this ball of yarn win."
Avery laughed as she gave the ball of yarn the side eye. It didn't matter that it was tricky, and unwilling to be untamed. Now was the time for the yarn to learn its place in the world of yarn and projects. Even if it was an inanimate object without feelings or real motive. There was nothing that was going to stop Avery. She wasn't going to quit until every last strand had been made into a masterpiece. ✽

Nova bit back a small laugh at Avery's comment but nodded, carefully attempting to continue her task. The once-chaotic mess now seemed slightly more manageable, and even though Nova was still far from a crocheting prodigy, she didn't feel quite as doomed as she had ten minutes ago. "I was gonna make a star," she stated absent-mindedly.
"I don't think it looks like one, though." She let out a small giggle at that, lifting the small, caterpillar-like ball of yarn to show Avery. It did have all five distinct points necessary to be a star, but it still looked more like a yellow blob than anything else. Huffing, she stabbed it once again and started to continue her stitching.
"So when did you learn to crochet, if you don't mind me asking?" She asked with a glance towards Avery before adding jokingly. "Unless you actually don't know how to and just came here to watch me." Nova's hands grazed the book she had left to the side as she finally got the small blob to look more like a star. Holding it up victoriously, she grinned widely. "It's working!"
She turned it slightly in the sunlight streaming through the classroom windows, proud despite its obvious imperfections. The points were uneven, the stitches too tight in some places and too loose in others, but to Nova, it finally looked like something. “Okay, maybe it’s a wobbly star. But it’s a star!” Nova suddenly remembered something and reached into her satchel once again and pulled out a baby blue yarn and placed it in front of Avery.
"Here, you can make one too," she said with a smile, going back to her own blob of a star. Pausing for a moment, she turned to Avery with a serious expression. "Big decision. Who do I give this to?"

✽Avery smiled as she watched Nova crochet. A star. A perfect project that suited her name perfectly. Though she hadn't crocheted in a long time, Avery thought back to when her grandmother had taught her to crochet. She couldn't remember if they had ever made stars, but she did remember making mini figures. Though would that even count as experience since her grandmother basically walked her through it all in the early times? She had only done a few herself, and, then again, she hadn't done them in a long time.
"Hey. As longs as it's the general idea of a star especially when you're first starting out at crocheting, that's awesome. I was far from as good as you when I first started." Avery said with a smile. It was true. Nova was worlds better than Avery had been. Though, Nova was older than Avery had been when she first started, but age didn't really matter. What mattered was skill, and, though Nova probably denied it, she really did have great technique. With practice she could make amazing things.
"I learned at a pretty young age. My grandmother taught me. Though, it's been a very long time since I last crocheted, so my work would probably look not even close to what you've done. Yours is amazing!" Avery said with a smile even though a small amount of sadness crept in. She had dearly missed the old memories she had with her grandparents, and just hoped it wasn't too late to bring those old memories back again. Or, at least, a version of them.
Avery's eyes lit up at the sight of the little star. Though it wasn't perfect, it was beautiful and made with love. And that's all that mattered. "It's beautiful!" Avery exclaimed with a smile on her face.
Avery accepted the yarn and needle handed to her. Smiling as she prepared to crochet. She wasn't sure what to make at first, then she decided on doing what Nova did. A star. She knew all too well that it wouldn't look great, but maybe she could surprise Nova with it, or someone else if she didn't want it.
Avery stopped crocheting for a moment to think before saying, "I don't know. Do you have anyone special like a friend to give it to?" ✽

Nova hummed as Avery answered her question, smiling at the compliment she gave her. "That's so cool! My own grandma doesn't know how to, but she does like to knit occasionally!" She smiled at the memory of the first thing her grandma had knitted for her; a baby blanket when she turned one for her birthday. Nova wondered if it was still in the depths of her closet or if her mother had packed it away. She'd probably have to find out soon.
Tapping her hook on her chin as she thought, Nova lifted a shoulder in a half shrug before continuing her crocheting. Did she have anyone to give it to? Well, other than the obvious choices like Caspian or even her newer acquaintance, Dove, she couldn't think of anyone else. It was as if her mind had gone completely blank when it came to who she was friends with.
Shaking her head exasperatedly, Nova glanced at Avery as she also started to crochet. Her mind finally came up with the answer, and a grin spread across her face. It was quite an obvious choice and she rolled her eyes at how long it had taken her to figure it out. "Yeah, I have someone," she answered casually, smiling. Nodding to Avery's own creation, she asked, "What about you? Do you have anyone to give that to?"

✽"Knitting? I've never heard of that before? Is it like crochet?" Avery was confused. Her pure blood side was showing a little too much as she lowered her head in embarrassment. She had only ever learned of crochet because her grandma had told her about how a friend of hers had given her a book about it when she went to Hogwarts, and that's what sparked her interest. Avery wondered if her grandma knew about knitting. If she did, Avery guessed she didn't think it was important enough to tell Avery.
Avery thought for a moment about Nova's question. Who could she give the star to? She had rarely seen her best friend Lya lately, and Mikey? Well, she didn't know where they stood. Not yet, at least. They were friends, but something was off between them, and she couldn't pinpoint what. Maybe it was her feelings? Or maybe something completely different? That's when she realized who she could give it to. Nova. The Hufflepuff reminded Avery of a star. Bright and joyful. The perfect person deserving of the star.
"Me too. I think I have someone in mind." Avery grinned back at the girl. Excited to finish the star and give it to the girl if she wanted it. ✽
