The Many Places

	The House by the Sea 6 Northton, Isle of Harris, Na h-Eileanan Siar, Scotland = By the far southern coast stands a modest farmhouse. Looking out toward the Sea of the Hebrides, facing harsh shoreside gusts that have left it aged and unsightly. It is a short way from the settlement of Northton, and is isolated by the acres of untended fields that surround it—grass green and purple, and patches of flowers between. Here, the air is laced by peat smoke and sea salt, and far away the dark mountains loom.		==

			Inside, the house is chaotic and messy. Muddy footprints line the floor and spiders spin elaborate homes in the roof; for only the eldest daughter, only 7 years old, bothers to clean. Two beds and a cot have been squeezed into a bedroom for the children to sleep—the other two bedrooms are mazes of books, papers, telescopes, and curious magical objects of unknown usage created by the house's brilliant owners. The kitchen downstairs constantly smells of burning things and drying herbs.

	The House on the Moors 9 Lane Head, Mary Tavy, Devon, England = On the banks of the River Tavy lies a sprawling manor estate of the Georgian style, built some two hundred years ago by a Muggle family enriched by the local mining industry of Mary Tavy, their name now lost to history. Sophie's grandfather's grandfather, the Norweigan-born Harald Ulvestrom (the first; not to be confused with Sophie's grandfather, Harald Ulvestrom, second of his name) purchased the property off the original owners in the 1930s, and named it the Ulvestrom Estate, the new heartland of his family. His son, and the first English-born Ulvestrom, Gustav (the first; not to be confused with Sophie's uncle, Gustav Ulvestrom, second of his name) was born there some months later.		==

			Over the years, the manor has embraced the Ulvestroms. Like the family, it is as grand as it is cold and empty, as ornate as it is grey and dusty. Singing robins and sparrows do not call the rising sun, but squawking crows upon the rooftops. Nothing but short grass and neatly trimmed hedges are allowed to grow in the gardens. It is full of the first Harald’s many descents, each as rich as their predecessor, and yet the place remains lifeless and still, no sound permitted above a whisper. No party is held here, no soiree. The moor gusts rattle the panes and the rains clatter down on the roofs, and the little Ulvestrom children grow as hard and as cold as ice.

	The House in the Forst 89 Reeth Road, Richmond, North Yorkshire, England = Deep in the Dales of North Yorkshire stands the once proud and beautiful Haslam House. Constructed hundreds of years ago by a Haslam of impressive aspiration and enterprise, the House became an exemplar of wizarding architecture, containing bright, vivid frescos acting out dramatic plays,		==

tables that carve out in ancient runes the intentions of one’s guests, and atriums that rain, gusts, nor dust can penetrate. The surrounding gardens and grounds held orchids of exotic fruits and beautifully-tended flower fields, perfect for evening dinner parties. Years of family wealth has accumulated in the house magnificent objects of interest, the first Caerphilly Catapults team uniforms, the skeleton of a unicorn, and rich Afghan flying carpets. Nonetheless, all but some of

	the house’s old self has remained, after the destruction of the family accounts by Brynmor Haslam. Nowadays, frames hang empty and lop-sided on the walls, and precious items lie discarded in cardboard boxes to be sold. Dust settles on the books and the furnishings, and the gardens grow wild unattended. Many of the bedrooms have not been slept in for years, and many curtains remain shut night and day. The glory of the Haslams has all but vanished, and only a shell remains.

Chinese Names
You may notice some repetition. In China, many siblings, and sometimes cousins, share traditional 'generational names', for example 桂 gui in Gui'an and Guiying. Chinese naming is complex, considering not only the meanings, but also the tones, strokes, and radicals of each character. I claim no such skill, but hope to have made a passable attempt here.

Norwegian Names
You may notice some repetition. The heirs apparent of the Ulvestrom family are purposely given similar names in order to reflect not only their position in the family, but also common naming practices among English and Nordic nobility. This includes the repetition of names between generations (see monarchs of Denmark) and the adoption of the mother’s maiden name (see Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Isambard Kingdom Brunel).
