The air was filled with fall, start of term, and that worry that you always get about the fact that you have to take two extra classes in Hogwarts as a third year. Andy could barely handle the normal amount of classes as a first and second year the years before, and know you have to take a whopping TWO EXTRA CLASSES? NO! Not only will this be tough and more homework will be given, but then Andy will have less time to practice Quidditch on the training grounds at Hogwarts! But all of that will be later, and now Andy just has to relax. Even though the seats on the Hogwarts Express where rock hard and it was pretty hard to relax, there is always a way. You can think about the stuff you will get on the candy trolley, just talk. Also, you can talk to someone, like your best friend. Speaking of friends, Brookline was supposed to come in Andy's compartment any minute! Finally there will be someone to talk to. But wait! Andy Forgot to tell her the compartment number... That means that he will have to wait outside of the compartment, and that will look pretty weird. Hey, but sometimes, you gotta do what you gotta do. Andy opened the compartment door and just stood there as unfamiliar faces looked at him strangely, one by one.

rookline woke up in a pool of clammy sweat, her brunette hair sticky in a large dark mass, her normally pretty features were blank as a lonely piece of paper. Her senses flooded through as she remembered her nightmare and what had happened the night before.

The Welsh girl brought her sisters the night before from the last night of summer camp, because the bold, daring, unafraid twins were homesick.

And if Brookline was being honest, she was homesick too. But as she entered her home - that where she's lived all her life - the young Quinn wanted to puke. Wanted to puke so bad that she started to regret bringing her siblings back. She realized why she was homesick, since she wanted a loving house full of order and both her parents' tough love and care.

However, was her house full of order and love? Was her house shelter for two human beings that gave birth to Lizy, Brookline and the rest of that scarred couple's scared, fragile, young offspring?

No. Simply no. Half of that couple ran away, while the other half was emotionally absent.

If Amy, Brookline's mother, had her parents lurking around, her parents would have already plucked Brookline, her mum, and her siblings, transporting that large family to their house, and would care for them, providing extra care for the fragile mother. Beatrice would probably give Chase Senior a piece of her mind.

But, no. That wouldn't happen. Even though, that might be way better than this, a small voice inside Brookline whispered.

Yes. That might be true. Either way, she couldn't sit here, waiting for an impossible miracle. Brookline haphazardly rolled out her bed, as she hopped out of bed, her ankle fell first, and it twisted.

Pop!

Heats of pain shot up in the painstakingly nerves of her ankle, and she gasped. A small groan left her lips, as the pain left her speechless. Flopping to the ground, she gazed at the pink bruise started to bloom over her ankle. Cruelly twisting her body around to her dresser, Brookline reached for the golden handle and opened the drawer. She grabbed a pair of medium-length white socks and pulled the socks over her bare feet, grimacing as she pulled the sock on her twisted ankle.

Then she tried to stand up. With a sharp intake of air, Brookline used her bed to help her stand up. The Welsh girl handled little weight on her foot, and she dragged herself down the stairs. She crossed her fingers, hoping desperately that her sister nor her mother would notice.

As she entered the dining room, Brookline set her ankle on the carpet floor, pain shot up her leg and she cursed herself as she lifted her foot ever so slightly. Limping, she crossed the dining room to the counter, and swung her leg over the stool.

She flicked her gaze up, taking a glance at the house elfs and Lizy. Phew. That's good, Brookline breathed a sigh of relief, as she saw Lizy's attention on the stove.

Then she tore her attention from the stove. She couldn't bare to look at it, after what she had done in Easter. That was horrible, almost burning down the house. Tears pricked at her eyes. Of course that's when Lizy finally noticed her.

Of course with tears in her eyes.

"Brookie? You okay?" Just as the words left Elizabeth Quinn's mouth, she seemed to remember the incident. Her eyes widened and tears flooded inside those green orbs.

I can't belive Lizy forgot. That was one of the worst days in my life.

I can't believe I came home. Curse my good will. Curse it all!

As Brookline sat there on the stool, with Lizy's searing pitiful eyes on her, she bounced her leg against the stool. She gasped as agony shot from her nerves, cussed, and her attention went to her ankle.

"Brooke?" Lizy’s famous features flooded with worry. “Is-is everything okay?" Her words suddenly switched to Welsh in a nervous habit.

Keeping the conversation in Welsh, Brookline snorted dully. “No, everything is not okay. Everything is so wrong.”

“Ca-can you tell me why and why you cursed?”

More profanities in Welsh was uttered from Brookline’s lips. And before Lizy would tell her off, their mother, uncertain Amy Quinn entered the room, a skeptical look on her face. However, she ignored it, and asked Lizy in a blank voice what was for breakfast.

“Eggs,” Lizy’s voice was clipped and tight-lipped as one English word floated to the mother. And then she turned to her sister, her voice wobbling in fear. “Brookline, tell me what’s wrong?”

“Is there something wrong, Liz? Brooke?”

“No!”

Lizy narrowed her eyes, and practically marched over to her sister, and manhandled Brookline to wrestle her hands off her twisted ankle. Once the expelled Slytherin saw the pink bruise, she turned to Amy, asking for her emotionally-absent mother to heal Brookline’s ankle.

Once the Welsh girl’s ankle was healed, her mother went back to bed with a piece of untoasted bread from in her unpainted fingernails, and Brookline could put weight on her ankle now.

“Get ready for school, Brookie. It’s time for your third year.” Lizy never reached third year so she was determined to keep Brookline in school, for some reason.
❀❀❀
The Silver Arrow was slung over the Ravenclaw’s shoulder as she slumped in her sneakers, her shoulders slipping, and her posture short. The cool September air made her glad that she wore a dark as night coloured sweater, with dark blue washed Jeans with black, glittery gems, and holes.

As she walked with her sisters, Cash and Chase Junior in tow, Brookline hugged each brother and Lizy one last time.

“Bye Line! Bye Ri! Bye Min!” Little, sweet Chase went to each girl, exclaiming his nicknames for each of them, and hugging each one.

Cash took a different approach. He clung to Brookline the whole time they were in the station and when they had to depart, he hugged Brookline extra tight for Minnie and Marie to hug Cash goodbye. “Bye-bye Brookie, Min-Min, and Marie...”

Lizy’s green eyes filled with tears as one, her mother wasn’t here to see the twins go, and she was seeing the twins as first years. “See you later, girls. Do your homework and have fun.” She gave each girl a warm cwtch¹ and waved to them as they boarded the train.

“See you at Christmas!!” Minnie raced back to Lizy, and wrapped her arms around the ex-witch’s waist before bounding back to her twin, a trunk in her small hand.

Marie held back her eleven-year-old tears, and was on the train steps when she waved to her siblings. “Bye guys!!”

Brookline didn’t look back, already said all her goodbyes. She hated goodbyes and it was heartbreaking, watching Chase and Cash look at her like their hearts were breaking. Once the train started moving, the Welsh girl made sure all her belongings was with her.

The cat in the crate. Check.

Broom. Check.

Enchanted Satchel. Check.

Trunk. Check.

Sister number one. Check.

Sister number two. Check.

“Stay with me. Please don’t loose me.” Brookline turned to the twins, and Minnie and Marie nodded.

She looked for a friend in a compartment. She looked for which both her and her sisters could lounge in. She saw a familiar figure, literally just standing outside of the compartment, clearly waiting for someone, and Brookline ventured closer. The Welsh girl noticed it was Andy Loggins, her fellow Ravenclaw, and one of her closest friends.

She turned to the twins, and asked them, “Do you wanna sit alone or sit with a friend of mine?”

Minnie looked over to the Ravenclaw boy and shrugged. “I guess. He doesn’t seem too bad.”

“Not really,” Marie added. The shy one out of the twins wanted to sit with her sisters alone, not with a random stranger.

“Too bad. We’re sitting in that compartment.”

Brookline dragged her sisters over to Andy, and gave her friend a forced smile, that looked genuine. “Hey Andy! How was your summer? Do you mind if my sisters and I sit with you?”

Finally, Andy's best and one of the only friends at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry has arrived at the train. But, Brookline was not the only one in the compartment that Andy would sit with. He expected this to be a two person ride, but no, Brookline's sisters tagged along. Maybe they are first years, because Andy does not remember seeing Brookline's sisters on the ride to Hogwarts a year before. Andy greeted Brookline with a warm hug. They have not seen each other for the whole summer, so it was very wholesome, in Andy's thoughts.
Brookline! Hello, I do not mind at all! Your sisters are more than welcome! My summer was great! Have a seat, if you want. Andy said. Then, right before he started blabbering, the Hogwarts express took off from a slow and steady pace, then it sped up, and into the Scottish wildlife. And you know what that means, trolley time! The trolley usually comes right at the start of the train ride, and while Andy, Brookline and her sisters wait, Andy asks, Did you bring Tigeress with you? Teddy never met her, so maybe they can play around. Do you remember, Teddy? My cat. Andy command Teddy to jump out of his cage and sit on Andy's lap. The swift cat did exactly what was commanded. Good boy, Teddy! Andy said as he gave him a fish flavored treat. Anyways, what are the names of your wonderful sisters? Andy asked. Teddy then jumped off of Andy's lap and layed down on his little cat bed. But, right before Andy could start yapping about his summer, a heavenly voice cam from outside of the compartment door. And yes, you guessed it, Anything from the Trolley, dears?

rookline returned the hug, from Andy, and stepped through the door, her already-small frame slouched and slumping straight into her dark boots, making her seem even shorter. She dragged her now-heavy trunk through the door and dragging it was a huge effort to her seat. She sighed, as she sat down, her fingers moving to fuss with her black sweater, to arrange it, to worry with the rips in her Jeans, to pick of a bit of cat hair, and lint off of the light blue denim. Fretting with the jet black belt, rearranging, all those little nervous habits showed how uncomfortable she was here.

Minnie noticed, her and her twin flopping down on either side of Brookline. The twins dropped their belongings down, and Minnie, ever the observant, jabbed her elbow into Marie's rib from behind, and sent a piercing glance over to Marie as she yelped, rubbing her rib. Minnue gently nudged the Welsh girl, regarding the anxious look in the dark ocean depths called Brookline's eyes. Marie nodded, and whispered, only so Brookline could hear her, "Hey. Everything okay?"

The twins knew how hard it was on both Brookline and Lizy, the older always forced to do this and that, due to their unfortunate circumstances.

Brookline jumped, started and nodded, turning her attention to Andy, who was already chatting, waiting for an answer. She swallowed, her throat closing up, for absolute no reason in the whole ding dang world. The Welsh girl tried to so hard, to grope around for a reason as why she was so anxious. The tightness in her chest grew, and then the darn knot in her gut twisted and twisted and twisted until it couldn't no more. She swallowed, and breathed, and inhaled. Inhaled again. Exhaled. You got this.

She nodded to her Ravenclaw friend. His kitten had just hopped upon his lap and received a treat. "Yes, I brought Tigeress. She's right here in her crate." The girl gestured to the crate, then knelt down to unlock the cage. Tigeress zipped out, first sniffing Andy and Teddy, and zoomed around some more, only stopping when she settled down in Marie's lap.

Brookline laughed at the silly state of her kitten, "I don't know if I ever met Teddy"-her whole attention was turned on Teddy, and she begun speaking in a sweet, baby voice-"Hello, Mister Teddy. How are you today?" She rotated back to Andy, her voice normal, "Is it okay if I pet him?" If Andy would give permission, Brookline would stroke the soft fur of Teddy.

Andy asked what the twins' names were. Brookline turned around and sat down between Minnie and Marie, glancing at both of them. Minnie spoke up first, the non-shy one.

"Hi! I'm Minnie, and this is my twin!" Minnie gestured to Marie, and when the other twin wouldn't speak up, Minnie jabbed her pointy elbow into Marie's ribs, hard.

The hesitant, timid twin almost yelped, and her pleading ocean eyes went to Brookline's and those crashing waves whispered, help me.

Brookline almost scowled. Shyness could not be tolerated, but it could when it was her sister. She relented, and plastered on a this-is-me-but-a-faker smile. "The shy twin is Marie, and she's quite nervous. Do you have any tips from when you were in first year, Andy?" The Welsh girl swung a protective arm around her little sisters, her face unreadable, unapproachable.

Only then came the witch with the trolley. Her little snack cart rolled squeaking into the compartment, and the witch asked the Hogwarts students wanted anything from the trolley. Brookline shook her head no, yet, glanced at her sisters, if they wanted anything.

Marie shook her head almost instantly. Her anxiety had flared up again, and it showed clearly across her pale face.

Minnie's face almost looked triumphant as she glanced at Brookline. It only took a glance for the Welsh girl to sigh and dig into her satchel for some sickles. Minnie beamed as she took the wizard currency, then strode her way to the lady with the trolley.

"Hello. I'd like two Chocolate Frogs, a Butterbeer," Minnie passed the money to the elder witch, "And two Pumkin Pasties for my twin and my elder sister will take a Mince Pie. Thank you." Minnie stepped back for Andy to order if he would like anything.

Brookline sighed. She didn't want anything but oh well. She would endure. She'll probably give the Pie to Marie anyway. She knew Marie loved anything sweet.

She turned to the train window, waiting in silence as Andy asked the old witch for what he'd liked. Sprawling, green, hilly meadows passed, and trees flew past. A stupid, small bird ran into the window, hitting itself right into the clear glass with a smattering smack.

Brookline winced as the avian slipped off, unexpectedly looking quite unharmed after a quick (wooo, that was rough) shake of its head. Its unique plumage spreading wide as it glided past without a simple care in the world or any thought that it literally just rammed into a thick object.

Brookline offered to pet Teddy, and Andy gave her a nod. The boy listened how Brookline introduced each one of her sisters, who all seem to be a first year. Brookline also asked Andy for tips about his first year, and really, there was only one, be talkactive, and make friends, but of course not all of Brookline's sisters are that talk ative so it will be pretty hard, but sometimes, you just have to say it how it is. Tips... well, I only have one for ya... Andy said turning to Brookline's sisters.Just, do not be shy, talk to people, only that way you can get friends, and having at least one good friend in Hogwarts, just like your big sister is for me is pretty important. but do not worry! You will find friends! Andy found that speech pretty tough to say because I kind of did sound pretty rude, as if this tip was exactly directed to the shy one out of all of the sisters. But then, the favorite part of the ride, the trolley! Brookline orded to chocolate frogs and a butter beer- a classic, while Andy took out every sickle and Galleon he had in his pockets, which was a lot, considering the how wealthy the kid was, and gave around 30 Galleons and 9 sickles for 5 bags of peppermint toads, and 3 bottles of pumpkin juice. Those toads are not all for Andy because the boy just realized that he forgot to get Brookline a gift! He took the bags of peppermint toads, and the chilly juice from the woman from the trolley and offered 3 bags to all of Brookline's gang I met gang in a silly way, not the actual defenition of it. Would you guys like some? Without waiting for a answer, he started giving them out. One bag for you, then for you, and, ah, Brookline! One for you too! Even though Brookline and Andy have been friends for such a long time, he is not sure that she even likes Peppermint toads. If you guys want, you can just take some pumpkin juice instead of the toads, I just like them so much, and it is a kindness gesture from me to give this wonderful candy to a friend... Andy said, then he remembered something: I always shared peppermint toads with Brookline's and I's friend... Justin... oh where are you! Andy whispered Under his tongue.

rookline smiled, and stroked little circles with her fingers around Teddy's ears. "He's so soft. I just love his fur."

Brookline had just introduced Marie, and asked her fellow third year for advice for her little sisters. Andy chimed in, with extroverted tips for her little sisters. Minnie glared at Andy, and Brookline knew why Minnie was a bit angry. Andy had just stated, "...having at least one good friend in Hogwarts, just like your big sister is for me is pretty important...." Minnie did not like being called little, and the fact Andy had said 'big sister' made Minnie upset. Brookline glared at Minnie back, warning het to knock it off.

Marie, on the other hand, was completely shocked, her eyes turning into large blue circles. The little Quinn did not want to talk to anyone and she picked up Tigeress from her lap, burying her face into the feline’s warm fur. Marie just looked like she was overwhelmed but Brookline knew better. Marie was riddled with social anxiety and would not talk to anyone, even if she got hundred sickles in exchange to say something to one person..

Old Brookline would have been happy that she was Andy's one good friend, yet New Brookline could not and would not feel anything. All she felt was empty.

Barren.

Meaningless and aimless.

Minnie passed Brookline her Mince Pie, and the third year smiled at her sister, thanking her. Minnie handed the pasties to Marie and the shy sister smiled softly as she saw her favorite treat. Minnie looked proud as she took a swig of her Butterbeer. Brookline rolled her eyes and she frowned, her eyebrows turning down, when she saw Andy purchase five bags of Frogs and three Pumpkin Juice. Andy was always buying more than he needed.

She started in on her pie, and then wished Minnie had asked the witch for a fork, if the elderly lady even carried forks. Oh well, it was a little hand pie, she could survive. Yet, she decided to put it up in her Enchanted Satchel after covering again.

Andy started handing out bags of Peppermint Frogs and she smiled, thinking he was being nice to her sisters. Then he handed her one. Her smile faded, and she realized how rude that was. She hurriedly placed her fake grin back on, and received the bag gratefully. "Thanks, Andy."

The twins echoed their thanks, and started eating their snacks. Brookline looked up to Andy, and he had started talking about sharing Peppermint Frogs with —

Oh, God, please. Don't talk about him.

And he did. Andy said his name. Brookline's smile was wiped away. She couldn't speak, she was too numb to speak. Of course Andy just had to talk about that. Of course he did. Of course Justin had to disappear in the busy, yet lonely halls of dank Hogwarts. Just her luck. She sighed, and turned the window again, staring into green hills four times the size of her.

The train hit a rough spot on the tracks, and she could feel the train bumps in the rough leather of the train seats. Brookline tucked her palms inside her midnight sweater, slipping them under her legs, and felt the thrumming of the train through her lean fingers. She exhaled, hot tears pricking on her eyes. She only needed to make it through the day. Make it to her dorm, make it untill the sun slips under the horizon. Make it untill she can see the pale moon's reflection, shining through her dormitory’s window, causing the sleek covers to shine remarkably.

Brookline needed to change the subject, she could practically feel Minnie's desire to yak her head off in the painful silence. She turned back around to her sisters, kicking off her boots to hug her knees to her chest.

"Soooo..... Andy! What subjects are looking forward to for third year?" Brookline would have done anything to not think about first year. Anything. “Personally, I’m looking forward to Muggle Studies. That and I’ve heard that we’re learning more about healing and medicine in Charms and Transfiguration.”

Was she being rude for not remarking on his comment? Or was she doing what she was supposed to do when someone made her uncomfortable? That was the thing. Brookline didn’t know. She glanced back at her sisters and she could see the look on Minnie’s face was more important than anything else could be to Minnie in this movement. The Welsh girl nodded at her sister, because she knew Minnie was trying really hard not to interrupt. Brookline was pretty sure Lizy had fixed the twins’ manners while she was at school.

Minnie immediately beamed, her whole body trembling with pure thrill. “While I’m not a third year, I would love to inform you that I’m really, really excited about Defense Against the Dark Arts and Herbology.” She kicked her feet, her blue eyes alone could literally tell you that she was delighted. “I am not excited about Flying. While I absolutely love flying in general - I actually really want to take Brooke’s Silver Arrow for a spin but she has never let me - Flying just sounds quite bland and weird. Why do you need a class for flying when you could honestly teach it for yourself?” The future Ravenclaw rolled her eyes as Brookline guessed Minnie was thinking about all the classes she wanted to take off the board.

Brookline actually chuckled at this - a truly bona fide chuckle that was mostly rare. She shrugged at Andy, as if she was saying that she had no idea she was related to this little ball of sheer sass. The third year then realized she didn’t know what to do next. She was a little taken aback, even though she usually was at a loss of words but sometimes she kicked herself into gear and came up with Plan B, Plan I, and only if she needed to, Plan O.

Can we just get to Hogwarts quicker? Brookline thought, she was all planned-out and that last question was her last resort. Thankfully Minnie had pounced into the conversation so it didn’t seem like there was such of a noticeable pause in their rather strained conversation. I just wish I wasn’t in this situation right now.
occ note: i had half of this written in november and forgot about it - gah, im so sorryy ;-; the reason why parts of this post had different quotation marks.
