xxxIt was Lucille's first weekend at Hogwarts, and she had decided to spend it with her cat. The pair exited the castle, and it seemed their outing would be uneventful. Daisy May was a bold, curious cat, but she was still getting used to the new surroundings, and so she tended to be stuck to Lucille's side nowadays. Lucille didn't mind; it gave her peace of mind to see that her cat never wandered off.
When they'd been walking through the castle, Daisy May had been so close to Lucille's legs that she'd caused her to trip multiple times, but when they finally made it to the grounds, her nervousness seemed to fade in the open space. This was the sort of atmosphere Daisy May was used to, having spent her first few months as a stray, and then later on followed Lucille around the sprawling Rosenhart property.
They walked for a bit, Lucille trying to find a nice spot to sit and perhaps draw, and Daisy May chasing and catching the falling autumn leaves. Eventually, Lucille found a nice, pleasant spot under a tree, and nestled underneath it, back against its trunk. For a while, she shifted her attention from Daisy May and to the little journal in her hands, beginning to make little sketches of Daisy May chasing after the leaves.
The cat soon got bored of this, though, and, all of a sudden, it pounced on Lucille's leg. "Ouch, Daisy!" she let out, rubbing her leg where the kitten's claws had dug into it. "Alright, here." Setting the journal beside her, Lucille picked up a leaf nearby, and began dragging it across the floor, encouraging Daisy May to pounce on it. Pupils dilated and body sunk low to the ground, the little cat looked like it was imitating a panther, jumping up suddenly to pounce on her prey.

It was Fredrickβs first weekend at Hogwarts, and he had promised himself he would spend it outdoors. The September air was crisp, carrying the earthy scent of fallen leaves and damp soil, and it reminded him faintly of home. Back at his parentsβ house, he had spent countless afternoons running about the garden, playing until the sun dipped low behind the trees.
Now, he wandered alone through the vast grounds of the castle, hands tucked in his robe pockets, taking his time to look around. The lawns stretched endlessly, dotted here and there with groups of students who had clearly had the same idea. Some were laughing, others simply sitting and enjoying the view of the lake in the distance.
Fredβs gaze wandered, and then it stopped. Beneath a tree, not too far away, a girl sat with a journal beside her, playing with a lively kitten. Fredβs lips curved into a smile before he realized it. The sight was simple, but somehow heartwarming. The little creature leapt after a drifting leaf, its small body tense like a hunter before pouncing onto the ground with surprising precision.
It was nothing like Buttons, his motherβs fat, grumpy cat who hated being disturbed. Buttons had never chased leaves, he mostly chased naps. Still, Fred had adored him, squeezing and pestering him whenever he could. The memory made his chest ache just a little with homesickness, but oddly, it also soothed him. Watching the kitten felt like carrying a fragment of home into this new place.
Slowly, Fred walked closer, careful not to startle them. He stopped at a polite distance, his smile widening as he caught the catβs bright eyes. βThatβs a fine hunter youβve got there,β he said lightly, his voice warm as he shifted his gaze from the cat to the girl, looking down at her.

xxxAs Daisy May pounced once again, completely missing the leaf and instead grabbing Lucille's hand, the pair were lost in their own world. Lucille shook the cat off, and it quickly pounced on its actual prey, the leaf. She laughed a little, mesmerized, until a voice broke through.
Lucille and the cat seemed to look up in sync, although Daisy May quickly diverted her attention back to the leaf in Lucille's hand, which now lay limp on the floor as Daisy pawed it, trying to remind Lucille to play again. Lucille, however, smiled up at the boy. Daisy May was increasingly gaining popularity in Hogwarts, it seemed.
"Oh, she is. I'll let you in on a secret. This here's a panther." Lucille had an amused smile on her face as she picked up the kitten and held it up to the boy. Daisy May, of course, played her part, attempting to gnaw on Lucille's fingers. The cat was clearly in a playful mood, wriggling a little in her hands.
Lucille took a closer look at the boy, her brow furrowed for a second, almost looking like she was staring. She could swear she'd seen the boy before. "Are you in my house? I swear I've seen you around the common room before." She gave her explanation quickly, not wanting him to feel uncomfortable.
With that, she let Daisy May jump back on the ground, and the cat wasted no time in jumping right into a pile of leaves, so only her tail stuck out, swishing this way and that as her paws clawed at leaves on the other side. "See that," Lucille said, gesturing at the cat. "Camouflage. Stealth. You'd never see her coming."
It was quite obvious that Lucille had the habit of talking a lot, and commenting on almost everything she saw. This boy was a stranger, but Lucille seemed to be speaking with the assumption that he'd be joining her.

Fred tilted his head, a playful grin spreading across his face as he watched the kitten squirm in Lucilleβs hands. βA panther, huh? Well, I suppose Hogwarts needs some wild creatures roaming around. Sheβs got the teeth for it, at least.β His voice carried an amused tone, and his eyes lingered on the little feline as though genuinely impressed by her fierce attempt to nibble Lucilleβs fingers.
When Lucilleβs brow furrowed and her gaze settled on him, Fred didnβt look away. He caught her eyes and held them, unbothered, as if he were as curious about her as she was about him. βYeah, I guess we belong to the same house, yes.β he answered casually, leaning back a little on his heels. βI think Iβve seen you around too. Or maybe in one of our lessons. Gryffindor, right?β He concluded and then his voice softened into something more thoughtful, though the hint of a grin still lingered at the corners of his mouth. βFrom a distance, though, I couldβve sworn you were a girl I met on the train here.β
Taking a step closer, Fred crouched down to pick up a dry leaf from the ground. Balancing in a comfortable squat, he held the leaf near the grass and moved it slowly, deliberately, as if intending to draw the kittenβs attention toward him. His grin returned at the thought, and he gave a soft laugh, recalling Lucilleβs earlier comment about stealth and camouflage.
βSheβs a dangerous one, thatβs for sure,β he remarked, his tone playful as he glanced up at Lucille again, up until then, comfortable with the number of comments the girl had made. Remaining crouched, with his gaze leveled closer to the height of the girlβs, leaf still in hand, he straightened his posture enough to speak clearly. βIβm Frederick, by the way.β His eyes stayed on her a bit, like he was intent on fixing a name to the face heβd only half-noticed in passing, before glancing in the catβs direction. "Who are you?"

Lucille nodded enthusiastically when he asked if she was from Gryffindor. She had been right, then; they had seen each other around. She tilted her head a little when he said she looked like someone he knew, but didn't say anything. It seemed like he was talking to himself, so she didn't interrupt him.
Her compartment on the Hogwarts Express had had two other people, neither of them him, so she was sure he was mistaken. She wasn't surprised she looked similar to someone he knew, though. Lucille knew she didn't have the most stand-out features; in fact, if the girl wasn't so lively and enthusiastic, it would be quite easy to overlook her in a crowd. It was Lucille's behavior that often seemed to call attention, periodically restless and looking for the next interesting thing to do.
She raised an eyebrow when he asked who she was, an amused smile on her face. Interesting way to ask her name, but she didn't mind. In fact, Lucille had probably said those exact words to someone before. "A lion tamer, obviously," she said flippantly, sarcastic to the point of sounding serious. "I'm Lucille, and this is Daisy May," she said quickly, eyes reverting back to the little black figure.
"A lot of people say I remind them of someone. Guess I just have one of those face," she said with a shrug, sitting cross legged and leaning forward a little."I suppose the same can't be said about you. Your eyes are striking." She said it like a passing comment, the thought scarcely entering her mind before the words were out of her mouth.
She wasn't looking at Frederick any longer; instead, carefully picking leaves off the ground. She seemed to be selecting them with great care, sometimes picking one up, examining it, and then dropping it back down. When she had gathered a small pile in her hands, she threw them at Daisy May, letting them shower her like rain. The cat scrambled this way and that, pupils dilated, excited by the sheer amount of leaves that had just fallen on her. Lucille giggled, watching her antics.

Fred smiled at the girl, the corners of his mouth curving with an easy warmth. βSo we were right,β he said, his tone carrying a quiet certainty. He leaned forward just enough to catch Daisy Mayβs attention, moving the leaf in his hand with a playful flick. When the kitten pounced, Fred laughed softly and let his weight fall backward, settling onto the grass with a comfortable sprawl. The cool blades pressed against his palms as he propped himself up, watching the tiny hunter claim her prize.
Lucilleβs earlier answer still lingered in his mind, and he chuckled to himself. I suppose my question begged that response, he thought, amused by her wit. Tilting his head toward her again, he added lightly, βPleasure to meet you both.β His hand brushed Daisy Mayβs ear in a fleeting scratch before he let the captured leaf fall away, surrendered to the kittenβs victory.
He had been about to explain himself, to tell Lucille why he thought she looked familiar, but her words caught him off guard. βYour eyes are striking.β The compliment landed so unexpectedly that Fred froze, the sentence heβd been forming dissolving into silence. For a heartbeat he simply stared, startled, before a small, awkward cough broke free from his throat. His gaze shifted quickly to the grass beside him, the confidence he usually carried slipping out of reach. What was that? Am Iβ¦ shy? The thought startled him. No one had ever said anything like that to him before. Especially not a girl.
Those doubts flickered through his mind in the span of a breath, but Fred was nothing if not quick to recover. Straightening slightly, he forced himself to meet her eyes again, his words simple and honest. βWellβ¦ thanks. I donβt think anyoneβs ever told me that before.β His voice carried no bravado, just truth. Then, with a faint smile tugging back into place, he continued what he had meant to say earlier. βI guess I mustβve been mistaken. Iβve met more new people this week than in my whole life.β
As she busied herself with gathering leaves, Fred found himself quietly observing her, noting the energy in her movements and the spark in her expression. For a moment, he thought her eyes were just as striking as she claimed his to be, but the words stuck somewhere in his chest. Perhaps it was simply the clumsiness of being eleven, too young to have much tact in such things, but he knew he wouldnβt forget it.
But Fred was not the type to dwell. His grin returned easily as Daisy May bounded among the scattered leaves. βSo tell me,β he said, laughter slipping into his tone, βdoes she usually let you borrow the bed at night, or is it the other way around?β

He seemed taken aback by her comment, and her head tilted slightly in confusion, as if puzzling him out, but she didn't pay it too much mind. Instead, she looked at him brightly when he spoke of new people, her excitement evident, letting him move on from the subject. "I know! It's amazing, isn't it? When I'm bored, I can just approach the next person I see sitting in the courtyard and they have countless stories to tell. You wouldn't believe what sorts of lives people have led. It's so intriguing." Her voice had taken on its regular high pitch, almost as if she would squeal at any moment. It didn't seem far off from the truth; the girl seemed to be buzzing with excitement.
Lucille often seemed akin to a rocket, restless and loud. The fresh tone in her voice made Daisy May's pupils dilate, taking it as an indication of playtime. Without hesitation, Daisy pounced on her hand again, and with vigor, Lucille pushed the cat onto its back, rubbing her stomach like one would a dog. Daisy May simply clawed playfully at her hand, kicking with her back paws.
"Oh, we take turns, even if I do get yelled at a lot." Lucille's eyes remained on the excited kitten as she let her go again. With that, she looked back at Frederick, her hands resting on her lap. "You wouldn't expect such a little thing to cause so much drama, would you?"
She leaned back against the tree again, looking up and admiring the intricate patterns made by its branches. I'd like to draw them, I think, she thought to herself, and with that thought, she suddenly remembered. My journal!
"Oh, you're going to love these!" she exclaimed, straightening and scrambling for her journal. A few stray leaves had settled on it, and, instead of dusting them off, she picked them up, crushing them in her hands, before letting them drop like confetti. She liked the noise, and fallen leaves were going to be crushed sooner or later, anyway.
"Look! I drew her!" She flipped to the most recent page, which contained messy little sketches of the cat prancing around in leaves. The cat was drawn with good precision, making it clear Lucille was used to making art of the little animal. The leaves, not so much. She placed the open journal on the floor between them, returning her attention to the leaves.
"You know, I can't wait for spring. I despise winter. It's too cold to do anything, but spring is when the world is so beautiful and flowery. Until then, though, I also like doing this." She continued carefully picking the dried leaves and crushing them in her hands. Daisy May, curious at the noise, approached and tried to see what her person was doing. Lucille let the cat sniff and swat at the leaves, before closing her fist and crushing them. "All gone, see?" she whispered softly to the cat, opening her hand to show the remains of the crushed leaf in her palm.

Fred couldnβt help but nod along as she spoke about meeting new people, her excitement almost infectious. βYeahβ¦ I think youβre right,β he admitted, his voice softer than usual, though still carrying that brightness of his. βEveryone has their own stories, and Hogwarts feels like the kind of place where youβll never run out of them."
He leaned forward a little as Lucille showed him the sketch, his grin widening. βThatβs really good,β he said, genuinely impressed, tapping the page lightly with his finger before she set the journal down between them. The little scribbles of Daisy May leaping and twisting in the air captured something real and Fred couldnβt help but laugh softly. βShe looks almost the same as she does right now. Mischievous.β
When Lucille crushed the dried leaves in her palm, the brittle crackling sound made Fred chuckle again. He shifted his weight and sat cross-legged properly on the grass, watching as Daisy May padded closer to her person, ears twitching at the noise. "I bet Daisy May thinks youβve invented the greatest game ever.β He lowered himself closer to the ground, plucking a leaf within reach. This time, instead of crushing it, he balanced it carefully on Daisy Mayβs head, his expression dead serious, as though it were some kind of noble crown. βThere,β he declared with exaggerated grandeur, βHer Majesty, Queen of the Leaves.β
Fred laughed at his own joke, though quickly glanced at Lucille, curious to see her reaction. It struck him again how easy she was to talk to, how her restless energy seemed to pull him along without him needing to think much about what to say. Her comment about spring pulled his eyes back to her. βI like spring too,β he admitted, his tone a little more thoughtful. βButβ, he gave her a half-smile, βmaybe winter wonβt be so bad if weβve got leaf-crushing to keep us busy.β He tossed the leaf he had plucked gently in her direction, grinning, waiting to see if Lucille or Daisy May would claim it first.

Lucille giggled at Daisy May's bewildered expression when Frederick placed the leaf on her head. "From lowly hunter to a queen. She's really going places, huh?" she giggled, as Frederick tossed a leaf in her direction. She caught it a split second before Daisy May leaped, and the cat gripped her hand with amazing strength for a little kitten. Lucille laughed, shaking her off, before opening her hand, letting her slap at the, for once, intact leaf.
"I suppose it won't be so bad until the snow comes. God, I hate snow. It's so cold and I hate coming outside. You'll only find me in front of the fireplace with a cup of hot cocoa." She wondered if she'd see Frederick in the future, perhaps in the common room to share some hot chocolate. But one could never jump to conclusions in the castle, it seemed. Everyone rushed to find their place in this new school, talking to a multitude of people, trying to find the ones they would click with and, perhaps, spend the year with, or beyond. Although, right now, even Lucille's second year felt so far away.
"So what's your story then, Frederick?" she asked, referring back to what he'd said about everyone having their own story. She pondered for a second, wondering if she should volunteer her own story first, but Lucille tended to be more interested in listening than talking. Despite her seemingly endless stream of words, Lucille loved to listen.
She had stopped playing with Daisy May now, letting the kitten entertain herself. From time to time, Lucille would reach out to tap the cat on the head with her index finger, which would lead to Daisy May playfully swatting her hand. "I can't wait until we can study Care of Magical Creatures," she started suddenly. It seemed Lucille often switched subjects in a random, chaotic manner. "I adore her, but Daisy is no hippogriff, that's for sure." With that, she fell silent again, her strange statement containing no question to him. It was just a narration of what was going through her mind, and Lucille seemed to do a lot of those.

Fredβs smile lingered at her words, his eyes soft with amusement as Daisy May clung to Lucilleβs hand. βQueen, hunter, and now wrestler,β he mused, shaking his head as if Daisyβs rΓ©sumΓ© was far too impressive for a kitten. βI donβt think Buttons ever had that much ambition. Heβs my mumβs cat, been old since the day I was born, I think. Mostly likes sleeping on warm chairs and ignoring me whenever I try to play with him.β Fred said it fondly, with a playful grin, the affection clear despite the teasing.
Her mention of snow made him chuckle, though he tilted his head thoughtfully. βIβve never really seen proper snow back home. It doesnβt happen much in Bristol. So I canβt wait to see it here, and maybe even try building something with it. But hot cocoa after hours in the coldβ¦β he let the thought trail off, a smile tugging at his lips, βthat sounds like something Iβd enjoy too.β
When Lucille asked about his story, Fred went quiet for a beat, his lips pursing as if he were trying to figure out where to even start. βWellβ¦ I grew up near Bristol. My parents both work at the Ministry, mum used to deal with magical accidents, dadβs in Games and Sports. Soβ¦ lots of Quidditch talk at home,β he explained, his grin tugging wider at the last part. βI love flying in our back garden. Sometimes I pretend Iβm in the middle of a real match, like the Quidditch World Cup.β His eyes flicked to hers curiously, a question rising in his tone. βDo you like Quidditch?
Daisy Mayβs antics drew his gaze again, and he let out a soft laugh. βCare of Magical Creatures does sound brilliant, though. Iβ¦ honestly donβt remember what a hippogriff is,β he admitted, rubbing the back of his neck sheepishly. For a moment, though, his thoughts drifted back to Quidditch, to the feeling of flying in his garden at home. Maybe, as time passed, heβd miss it less, but right now Hogwarts still felt a little strange compared to the place where everything was familiar. He had to pull his focus back to keep up with Lucilleβs quick stream of words, not wanting to lose the thread of her excitement. βWhen do we even start that class, anyway?β he asked, leaning forward with a curious tilt of his head.
