God, this was a stupid idea. Perhaps the worst idea she'd ever had. Not only did Lucille post a flyer for help with astronomy, she'd made it anonymous, too. With her luck, everyone had thought it was some sort of prank and ignored it. Part of her hoped that was true. At least then she could tell herself that she had tried asking for help, but no one had wanted to.

Lucille sat right in the center of the room on the floor, surrounded by her notes spread out all around her, and feeling incredibly tiny in this large tower, where every rustle of parchment seemed to echo. She picked up the notes from her most recent class, but they referenced something she'd studied earlier, and she didn't quite understand what that was either.

With a sigh, she dropped the parchment in her hand, collapsing onto the floor and staring up at the ceiling. She wondered if it would help to go up the tower and stare at the stars, but it seemed like too much effort for something that might work.

She didn't know why this was so difficult. Astronomy itself was fine; it didn't seem too difficult. It was just that the classes took place at night, when Lucille desperately wanted to go back to her dorm, change into her pajamas, and rest. And so, in every Astronomy class, while the professor talked of planets and stars and the moon, Lucille would fight to prevent her eyes from drifting shut. Her notes didn't miss a thing, but it seemed she wrote with her mind switched off. Lucille's notes were a bit messy, but they undoubtedly contained all she needed to know. The desire for academic excellence meant her hand worked of its own accord, writing things down while her brain struggled to grasp it.

She turned her head to face the door, eyes beginning to close, even though it wasn't even that late yet. She didn't know if she believed someone would come to her aid, but it had always been a habit for her to watch the doors wherever she was. She had always been an excitable, sociable child, and her family said that Lucille would always stare at the entrances, not wanting to miss someone entering or exiting. Now, although she didn't do it for the same purpose, muscle memory would often kick in and find the nearest entrance.

Her eyes were slowly beginning to drift shut, and she wondered if a little nap on the floor might help her tackle this annoying subject. Right as she began to fall asleep, having completely given up on her dreaded astronomy, she heard the door open, and with it, her eyes opened, too.

Hand slowly brushing the railing, steps measured and poised, the moonchild was slowly ascending a path she had taken countless times. However this time she came to a halt upon facing the entrance to the classroom, instead of continuing up to her predilected retreat. Eyes trailing down the sculpted wooden door, the raven tilted her head to the side, fingers grazing the handle - a second of hesitation.

The very reason she was currently standing here had appeared a few days earlier, brought to her by a twist of fate. A breeze had ripped a carefully pinned flier, probably sparked by the incessant flow of entering student and the strong wind of october, and had carried it right to the feet of a certain blonde, sat in the hall and deeply buried in a most interesting volume. Glancing down, she had spotted this unusual cry for help, had bent over and picked it up. It was something akin to a demand or a plea, requesting one's help in a subject the raven beloved, yet no name or additional information was attached to it. Simply a place, and a time.

One less trusting in mankind than herself would have certainly frowned upon her presence there tonight - she could simply close her eyes and see the pouting face of her dearest friend, lecturing her about the danger of perfect coincidences, or how fate was a produce of human's mine to bring forth reassurance and relieve them from the burden of thinking too hard. Yet she, for one, believed in it, and it is why her steps had naturally led her towards this mysterious rendez - vous.

Wrapping firmly her hand on the handle, she pushed the door open and took a few steps inside, eyes narrowing at the sudden brightness of the candle-lit room.

A single form was spread out on the floor, surrounded by a halo of notes and diverse parchemins. A girl, it appeared, with dark brown waves cascading from her inert porcelain face - a rose, eager to bloom. With doe eyes the same hue as her locks, she truly evoked flowers of pink shades and soft petals floating on a still lake, an appeasing image that made the blonde's lips curve into a soft smile. See, Ev ? Not a serial killer.

"Hello," she spoke out, tilting her head slightly - a tick she really had to master someday. Holding it her right hand, she extended the flyer that had found her to the stranger, smiling in a comforting way. "I heard you had a fight with the moon and stars ?"

The door opened, and Lucille scrambled to sit upright. She didn't want the newcomer to see her like this, in what she could only describe as the depths of despair. Lucille's hair had been tied up in a high ponytail before, but from the time spent on the floor, countless strands had come loose, giving her a frazzled look, rather than framing her face.

She looked away from the girl who entered, her embarrassment growing at her current state. Her hands immediately went to the hair tie that had come loose in her hair, and she attempted to redo it, frantic, but her hair refused to be tamed currently. With a defeated look, Lucille left the hair tie on her wrist, and smoothed down her hair a little, trying to look just a little bit more presentable and organized in front of the girl.

Speaking of which, the girl seemed kind, both from the expression on her face and the comforting tone in her voice. When she had entered, her pale blonde hair had seemed to glow, illuminated by moonlight. Lucille knew it was silly, but it seemed the night sky was a better friend of this girl than hers.

A fight with the moon and stars. What an odd thing to say, Lucille thought to herself, finally meeting the girl's eyes once more. "I suppose you could call it that," Lucille said with a hesitant laugh, looking at all her notes now. "Although it seems the stars call me to sleep, when I should be studying."

Lucille brought her knees up to her chest, wrapping her arms around them, and then resting her head, sideways so she could still look at the girl. Her eyes dropped to the flyer the girl was handing to her, but she didn't take it. She didn't want to see that thing in her life again, and certainly didn't want to hold it. "And there lies the proof of our quarrel."

She wanted to acknowledge the kind girl who was here helping her, but Lucille couldn't bring herself to be as bright and cheerful as she always was. Not when she was letting down her siblings' expectations of her in the first month of school, and certainly not when she'd had to turn to a stranger for help. And with that thought, guilt began to rise up in her. Guilt at being cold to someone offering her kindness. She wasn't rude, by any means, but in Lucille's warped vision of the world, the hesitance she felt, coupled with the failure to ask the new girl any questions about herself felt like a grievance, a method to shun someone. Ordinarily, Lucille would stop looking at her at such an interaction, her eyes travelling every which way, finding the walls more interesting than her companion. But, right now, she felt she owed the girl this much, at least, so there was a pleading, hopeless look in her eyes as she looked up.

Despite feeling her attempt at humour had landed completely off-course, the raven did not shy away. In her defense, socializing when the sun had disappeared was always harder for her. The carefully crafted mask she wore under daylight found itself cracking under the moon, as if its gentle rays revealed Elena's true nature. Words seemed to pass past the barrier of her lips much more easily, and she often found herself acting without carefully tossing the situation in her mind, something she would have never allowed to happen during the day. Though despite this layer of armor being ripped off her skin, despite her aversion for meeting other in what had become her time of solitude, she had come here for a reason, and she intended on lingering until the matter was solved, no matter how long it took.

The disheveled form bathing in notes and scribbles took the appearance of a seemingly exhausted student, brown waves sticking out at odd angles, trying to escape the hold of the hair tie clutching them in a high ponytail. The scene evoked vividly one of her worse moments, a few months prior, and the irony of the situation was amusing - her, standing in the place of the white-haired eagle she had surprisingly grown to affectionate, despite a rough start. Shaking the souvenir off her skin, she instead focused on approaching the skittish girl, who was making anxious attempts at taming her wild locks.

She came to a halt a few feet away from the stranger in distress, clasping her hands in one another before tilting her head slightly, running navy eyes along the scene. Her gaze slipped into one tainted with amusement upon hearing the girl's response. The night sky had different impacts on the souls wandering below it, and hearing one that was at the very antipode of her own was... well, ironic. The moon and stars made her restless, urging her to run until her breath gave up, to bathe in their light and remain forever by their side. Loyal companion that had followed her through her sleepless nights, the very same companions that were now singing this girl to slumber. "You should probably listen to them," she smiled softly, before uttering the world's most hypocritical sentence. "Sleep is vital, and the lack of it will only make you sink deeper." Coming from the insomniac herself.

Her hand fell back to her side when she ignored the flyer, but it was her heart that clenched upon seeing this brown-haired stranger attempting to soothe herself by clutching her knees tightly. Knowing it would be deemed as strange to hug someone she had just met, Elena hesitated, trying to fight the urge at embracing the aching girl. Instead, she fell to her knees by her side, rubbing circles on her back. "Academics can be ruthless, even more so when your heart is filled with good intentions. It takes time to figure it out, more than you would imagine. No one, no one can expects you to hold yourself to such high standards. You are not weak for making mistakes, and you are not weak for asking for help. It might in fact be one of the bravest things you ever did." Truly hoping she was not sinking the girl further in her desperation, her heart ached as the memory of that night came to the surface of her mind again, stirring back negative sensations. "I know I didn't, even though I should had, and I ended up in a hospital bed," she sighed out, chuckling half-heartedly. "So that makes you braver and stronger than me, for one, and I'm quite sure half the population of this castle wouldn't have dared even to think of it."

Tilting her head she nudged her slightly, smiling - and praying she hadn't somehow made it worse -, "I'm Elena. What's your name ?"

The girl seemed to be greatly affected by Lucille's despair. She was empathetic, compassionate, and Lucille wondered if she might have faced something similar. Her words were encouraging, but simultaneously made Lucille feel inadequate for ignoring the most basic needs one has. She talked of sleep, but how could Lucille admit to her that she simply could not go to bed with unfinished work? And if she tried, her hands would itch as if calling her to pick up some parchment, work until her fingers were stiff, and only then would her mind allow her to succumb to rest.

Lucille began to speak, to tell her that whether she could meet those expectations or not, they were set. She did not want to be a disappointment, her ache for her family's approval far outweighing any concerns for her health, until the girl talked of how she had ended up in the hospital. Lucille silenced herself, realizing that may very well be a possibility in her future. She had been skipping meals already, rushing in the opposite direction when students headed to the Great Hall, taking every moment she could to revise or work on her assignments. Already she had managed to crash into someone in the hallways in her haste, a reminder to slow down a little. But Lucille had never given the idea a second thought. Now, she certainly couldn't protest, after what the girl told her. It would seem too much like minimizing her own experience with this problem.

As the girl spoke, she began to rub circles in Lucille's back. For a second, Lucille tensed, shoulders tightening, uncertain about the gesture from a stranger. But, slowly, she relaxed, deciding to accept the comfort. It felt like home, as if someone was finally looking out for her after so long on her own. School had only been in session for a month, but Lucille had been away from her family for what felt like an eternity already. Summer camp, although a wonderful experience, had only served to prevent her from seeing her family. Sometimes, she would sit and think of how, if only she had missed it, perhaps she wouldn't be feeling so lost right now. But, then again, this was bound to happen at any rate.

The girl introduced herself as Elena, and asked for her name. Lucille was quiet for a second, as if reorienting herself. It looked as if her thoughts were stitching themselves back together after the intense spiral she had just navigated. "Lucille," she said finally. Her voice came out a little hoarse, as if she'd been quiet for a long time, although it had only been a minute. She cleared her throat, before beginning to speak. "Asking for help takes no courage. It's just a little embarrassing sometimes," she said with a slight wince. The idea irked her even now. "The expectations are there for a reason. Only because I can meet them. I have to. I just need a bit more time, and it'll all be fine. Everything will be fine." Her words quickened as she spoke, as if she was speaking more to herself than to Elena. Lucille straightened, with a little bit of feigned bravery, and surveyed the scattered parchment. "It's not a lot, really. It's manageable." Again, she was trying to comfort herself, her voice cracking a little as the pages seemed to blur together before doubling, then tripling in quantity.

"Just some more time," she repeated, her voice a whisper now, closing her eyes and taking a deep breath. She was trying to prepare herself, but was hesitant to begin. Opening her eyes felt like an enormous task, for she would have to face her 'neglected' work when she did. So Lucille kept her eyes closed, trying to will herself to open them, to begin reading, to ask Elena to teach her, to do anything, but it just seemed so much easier to sit here and avoid it all.

Heavens seemed to watch over the two girls sunken to the floor. A singular moonbeam had pierced through the stained glass of the oval window mounted on the wall, illuminating the disarrayed papers scattered over the floor. Its light made the silver tears streaming down round cheeks glow, as if liquid stars were pouring from the girl's chestnut eyes. A gentle smile curving her lips, she slowly eased down her circular movements, giving her a little more space to breathe and organize her thoughts. Standing as still as the night's crisp cold air, Elena let her gaze trail down the room, taking deep breaths. As though her being solely thrived on it, moonlight always seemed to replenish her, sharpening her senses and appeasing her frantic soul. And the clarity it provided was deeply needed in such a crucial moment.

Judging by how touch-starved the brunette was, by how tense and nervous she looked, or simply feeling the dark teal waves of anxiety accompanied by a dash of purple-colored fear that just gazing at her caused in Elena, this stranger was standing in front of a cliff, the wind slowly inching her closer. It saddened the raven to see such a kind soul in a state like this, so close to the beginning of the year. Yet a new environnement, without meaningful connections and under pressure, often seems like one's personal hell. She could not put into words how grateful she was for meeting so early another piece of her heart, who came in the form of a strange saccharine blonde - it made everything bearable.

When one lacks this sort of connection, without a shoulder to rest on, the world resembles a colorless canva, each new stroke looking like another burden to shoulder, and face, alone.

"Lucille," she repeated slowly, acknowledging her with a nod as the smile curving her lips spreaded ever so slightly. A tiny frown creased her brows, and she tilted her head, pondering her response. Perhaps she was biased by her own experience, but asking for help was, in her opinion, one of the bravest thing mankind could ever do. She, herself, was a coward, preferring to bask in aiding others rather than focus on the myriad of things that were wrong within her. A hypocrite of the truest kind, though one that was well-intentioned. Taking, accepting felt odd ; she then hid in giving, in caring. Was that so wrong ?

"You can," she answered after a minute of silence, "but that doesn't mean you must. Especially not if it means destroying everything else that lies within you." Essence, aura, true self, 'spark' - it has many names, and is to the moonchild the one thing that must be protected at all costs. The very one that makes each being unique and special, something all - religious, poets, artists, writers - agree is precious, though they give it many shapes, forms or origins. If 'divine' exists, it is found there.

Her eyes narrowed as she listened to pure denial, face shifting into a dubitative expression. "It is not," she gently said, "and you don't have to pretend with me." Inching away from Lucille, she pouted slightly, waiting a second before continuing, "You don't have to reach the skies in the instant, you know. To each their pace, their road."

oh no! feel better soon!
and sorry for the shorter reply
She was sitting quietly now, eyes wandering over the pages with a certain degree of acceptance. Not a lot, by any means, but enough. Her watery eyes shone, the darkness of them contrasting with the moonlight, allowing specks of white to appear in them. The moonlight seemed to be embracing the two girls, and Lucille had the impression that, were it not for the girl beside her, the light would have felt cold and unattached.

The words on her parchment appeared clearer now, almost highlighted by the light. Lucille looked away from them, finally meeting Elena's eyes. Her words seemed to echo in the quiet classroom. Everything else within her? What else was there? Lucille's mind wandered, searching for any other accomplishment she could use to describe herself. The little black kitten who was currently asleep in her dorm would thank her for taking it in. Some students she had met might credit her with making their day a little better. But what was all that worth, really, if she could not help herself?

You don't have to pretend with me. The words struck her, startled her a little. Was she pretending? She hadn't noticed. The act was just as much for Elena as it was for herself. Feigning confidence, bravery, determination, and all those other daring emotions was often how Lucille accomplished them. Even now, when she had been lying about the manageable workload, it was an attempt to tell herself it was alright, that she could do it, even if it was too much to cover in one night. "My pace feels so incredibly slow compared to the rest. And it is far too slow to learn everything before exam season." Her words were slow, forced out. Lucille was not accustomed to admitting her defeats to anyone, much less herself. She took a deep breath, gathering up her thoughts before speaking. "Please help me," she said in a soft voice, wincing at how hopeless she sounded. Asking for help was one thing, seeming so pathetic while she did so was another.

Still, there was something about Elena that made Lucille feel she could trust her. Perhaps it was the way she had insisted on calming her, getting through to her, instead of diving straight into work. Perhaps it was the soft tone in her voice, or the concern that she almost seemed to emit like light, or maybe her lack of sleep and desperation had simply made her vulnerable. Whatever it was, Lucille was slowly letting go of her expectation of an O in astronomy. Instead, her criteria for happiness was drastically falling until she felt that simply passing would be enough. Ironic, since just two seconds ago, Lucille had been worrying about her grade. Now, the worry remained, but she was beginning to let go and, along with it, her will to work left her.

Only a few minutes ago, she had been unwilling to face her workload out of fear. Now, it was slowly morphing to unwillingness to face it out of defeat. Was there a point in trying when the whole world had already surpassed her? She had been so excited to learn about magic in Hogwarts, it had never once struck her that she wouldn't be able to understand it.

Despite trying her best at making the lonesome bird in front of her chirp again, Elena could not help but feel each of her words resonate within her every cell. Watery eyes and feathers plucked from her wings, claws clasped with a heavy iron chain — this bambi-eyed girl had built her own cage, burying herself into her self-esteem, sinking lower and lower with each challenge that rose to face her. Hand lightly brushing a strand of her tousled chocolate locks, the raven tilted her head, a serene smile clinging to her lips despite the pit her words had carved into her chest.

For despite corresponding as close as one could be to what students perceived as academical perfection —high grades, solid record, prefect in her second year —, the moonchild often felt as though a path had been given to those around her, one she could neither understand nor follow. Condemned to remain aside, wandering soul in the dark, she resented those who appeared to glide through life with easiness, who did not have this constant veil stretching between them and the world.

And yet.

"And yet it's your pace," she nudged the brunette, a smile woven through her tone. "No soul inhabiting this earth is able to walk the same path as you, no one can tell you if it's hard, or easy, or long, or slow. And you can not affirm one's own path is faster or easier than yours, because you do not walk it. You are unique. You are absolute. Not relative, especially not relative to others." She meant every word, and hoped the tearing girl facing her would understand what she tried to transmit.

Elena's heart clenched at her little plea for help, mentally adding Lucille to the long list of souls she craved to capture from this world, travel far away from the blinding light of the sun and tend to every last day of her mortal life. Washed over by this intense wave of aww (no words could describe this feeling better than this regrettably non-literary onomatopoeia), she pulled the little bird in a brief, tight embrace, fighting the urge of deposing a kiss on the forehead of someone she had just met. Get a grip on yourself, please.

"Of course," she finally smiled, releasing her before clearing her throat, looking around. An impressive amount of scribbled parchments scattered the floor, as well as opened books and some broken quills, apparently snapped in half in a sudden access of desperation. "Where do you want to start ?"

ahhh sorry i took so long
The gentleness in Elena's voice calmed her, urging her to relax. It felt as if they had all the time in the world right now, although truthfully, morning would come much, much sooner than she would like it to, and Lucille knew this. In no time at all, the sun would be rising, a welcome sight, but it would mean that any hope she had of studying the stars would be lost. Perhaps an exaggeration, considering the night had barely begun, but Lucille felt as if one hundred nights would not be enough time.

Nonetheless, she pushed all thoughts away from her mind, latching on to Elena's words instead. The second year was right; it was her pace, whether she liked it or not. Currently, she didn't feel as if she did, but the only way to improve her pace would be to start. Or something along those lines. Lucille tried to recall some proverb or cliche that might help her think; it was funny how old sayings that might seem so typical and obvious were often times exactly what one needed to hear. Perhaps that was why they had lasted the test of time. As of right now, all she could think of was practice makes perfect and if you fail, try, try again, both equally condescending and unhelpful.

Elena's words, however, contained the simplistic understanding of her situation that she wished to have right now. She could not compare herself to someone else, since she would not truly know the other person's journey; one can not completely imagine themselves in another person's position, no matter how much they try. Perhaps that was why empathy was such a difficult concept for some people.

Then, she did something unexpected. Elena pulled her in for an embrace, a sudden movement. At first, Lucille's shoulders tensed; she was typically quite an affectionate being, but perhaps it was her vulnerability that had caught her off guard. But, after half a moment of her processing what was happening, she relaxed. Her shoulders dropped and she closed her eyes, threatening to spill their tears once more. But, perhaps a bit too quickly for comfort, Elena let go, and Lucille blinked away the newfound tears in her eyes. It had felt like home, like letting her family hold her when she was upset, and unlike Hogwarts. Lucille had not hugged Elena back, but she had almost collapsed completely, and now there was an expression of trust in her eyes, like a stray dog fed once and now devoted for life. The simple gesture had meant far too much for her and, had her mind not been so scattered, she would have been embarrassed. Instead, she looked straight at Elena, awaiting her next words of wisdom or advice, and, sure enough, she refocused to their work.

The overwhelming feeling of having too much to relearn and revise threatened to return, but she stayed resolute, refusing to let the pages blur together again. Sheepishly, Lucille reached for a page in the messy assortment. Despite the haphazard arrangement of the parchment, it seemed as if she was well aware of where everything was, her movements showing no hesitation. As she cleared a space in front of her and placed the paper down, she glanced at Elena, trying to gauge her reaction, to make sure she wasn't thinking her stupid or undisciplined. It contained the most basic notes on the moon and planets, clearly from one of the earliest Astronomy lessons. The girl had lagged behind since day one, or at least, near it.

"From the beginning," she said finally, a determined tone in her voice. She tried not to think of how much time it would take. After all, Elena was right. Her path was her own, and it was not slow, simply different.

"Then we shall start from the beginning."

An eternity later — the moonchild had lost track of time, unable to tell if she had been there for minutes, hours or days —, dust had settled over the far edges of the room, minuscule ghosts twirling within the moonlight, odd ballet with an even more peculiar public. For sat on the cold, hard tiles of this room perched into the highest tower of the castle, were two girls. Neck sore from the time spent bent on a myriad of fleeting papers floating about, covered in unreadable scribbles and ink stains, eyes straining to focus on the words detaching themselves on parchment and a back that was surely now somewhat distorted.

Still, the honey haired girl was proud of the work they had managed to accomplish, and she dearly hoped her little birdie was too. Only seconds ticking away from this day would tell if the intensive study session they had just been through had truly helped Lucille to understand the ways of the skies, but from as far as the raven could judge, she appeared more confident and self assured in her own capacities, which consisted in itself a victory.

Leaning back, Elena stretched, a yawn tearing itself from her throat. "Hey," she nudged the brunette, smiling. "Curfew. Let me walk you back to your dorm." For she was indeed, before a self proclaimed mentor, a prefect, and she would not let a firstie transgress rules while under her care. Besides, the tiredness in her companion's eyes fooled no moonchild — Lucille needed to rest, and perhaps now that her spirits were appeased she might finally be able to. "You did good," she added, a prideful shimmer in her navy eyes. "I do hope you're proud of yourself, for I am."

Reaching for a few volatile papers, she tucked them into a notebook before gently rising to her feet, extending a hand with a teasing smile stretched upon her face. "Now come on, bedtime."
