“Tomlinson, Madeline!”
I walked up to the Sorting Hat with all the confidence I could scrape together. My brother’s a Gryffindor, and I’d been chanting “Scarlet and gold, scarlet and gold” in my head since the train ride. I was ready for the lions.
But the Hat had other plans.
“Ah, fiery, brave, oh yes… but you’ve got more than bravado. Loyalty, stubborn as a dragon with a toothache, and a heart that’ll never leave a friend behind. No, Gryffindor’s not your path. You’ll do best in… HUFFLEPUFF!”
The cheer that went up nearly knocked me off the stool. I tugged the Hat off, cheeks a little warmer than I’d like to admit, and headed toward the black-and-gold table. The benches were buzzing with chatter, plates stacked high with food that looked far too good to just sit there.
I slid onto the bench, grabbed a bread roll, and tore into it while I tried to act like I belonged here already. Above us, the ceiling stormed with rolling clouds, but down here it was warm and golden, and maybe… not such a bad place to land.
As soon as I sat, another name was called:
The Sorting Hat barely hesitated before calling, “HUFFLEPUFF!”
The person looked relieved, almost like the choice fit them perfectly, and made their way over to our table, and slipped into the seat beside me
I grinned and nudged the platter toward said person. “Guess we’re housemates now. Madeline Tomlinson,” I said, breaking my roll in half and holding out a piece like a peace offering. “But you can call me Maddy. First year, just sorted. Looks like we’re starting this adventure together.”
I tilted my head, studying her ice-blue eyes with a spark of curiosity. “And you are… ?"
