Great Lake
Isabella Bernard's first day at Hogwarts had been fine. Just really busy. There was so much to do - unpacking her clothes, organizing her books (which there were a lot of), and making sure all her potions tools and ingredients were safely stored. She wanted everything to be in the right place before classes really started.

By the time she finally sat on her bed last night, she felt tired but also excited. Hogwarts already felt different than anywhere she’d ever been. Magical, but in a quiet, almost personal way. The second day was a little calmer. Her roommates were still setting up their things, and even though she wanted to get to know them better, they seemed focused. She didn’t want to bother them.

So, she took her sketchbook and went outside, wandering until she found the Great Lake. It was beautiful, huge and shining. With a light breeze brushing the surface. She found a spot near the edge, under a tall tree, and started sketching. The giant squid drifted lazily through the water, and birds flew overhead.

For the first time since arriving, she felt truly relaxed. Sitting there, sketching in the quiet, it felt like the start of something new. Something important.

Madeline had wandered down toward the lake, mostly because sitting inside felt like torture on such a bright afternoon. She had just pushed her trunk underneath her bed, too unbothered to unpack. She kicked at a pebble as she went, half-hoping she’d stumble on something exciting — a secret passageway, a magical creature, maybe even the squid if it was in a dramatic mood.

Her eyes landed on a familiar figure under a tall tree, sketchbook balanced on her lap. Recognition sparked, and Maddy’s grin widened. She padded over, curls bouncing with each step.

“Well, if it isn’t my favorite stargazer turned lakeside artist,” she said, dropping onto the grass nearby with zero hesitation. “You’re everywhere, aren’t you? First the tower, now the lake. Starting to think fate has set us out to be friends.

She leaned back on her hands, tilting her head toward the sketchbook. When she caught sight of the page, her eyes widened. “Wow. You’re good,” she admitted, genuine surprise softening her voice. A laugh followed quickly, crooked and light. “I could never. If I tried to draw the squid, it’d look more like a fat worm with arms.

She glanced back at the water, the breeze tugging at her hoodie sleeves. “Mind if I sit here for a bit? Promise I’ll behave… well, mostly. No splashing the squid unless he starts it first.” Her grin tugged upward again, playful, but her eyes lingered on Isabella’s sketch like she actually meant the compliment. It felt like the start of something new, something exciting yet to come.

Isabella looked up and smiled the second she saw Maddy - like her day had just taken a turn for the better. "Maddy!" She exclaimed happily. “I’m not everywhere.” she said with a small laugh. “You’re just good at finding me.

She shifted slightly, making space even though Maddy had already dropped onto the grass like she belonged there. And honestly, she kind of did. Maddy had that way about her - like she was part of the scenery in the best possible way. Loud in color and bright in energy.

When Maddy peeked at her sketch, Isabella’s stomach did a little flip. She almost covered the page with her hand. Almost. But then Maddy complimented her, and the words landed harder than they probably should have.

Thanks,” Isabella said, her voice quieter than she meant it to be. Then she added, teasing lightly, “Wow, praise from the girl who thinks squids have arms? I’ll take it. I'll have you know, they have tentacles. Not arms.” She bumped her shoulder lightly against Maddy’s. “You can stay, obviously. Just don’t scare off the squid. I think he likes the quiet.

A pause. Then, softer: “But…I like it better with you here.

Madeline plopped back on the grass like she owned the place, her messy curls fanning out around her head. She propped herself up on her elbows and shot Isabella a mischievous grin.

“Tentacles, arms, legs—whatever. I’m telling you right now, I’m not shaking hands with that squid. Can you imagine the slime? It’d take a week to get it off my fingers.” She wiggled them in the air, making a dramatic face, then cracked into laughter at her own joke.

She stretched her legs out, tapping her shoe against the earth like she was claiming her spot under the tree. “And don’t worry about scaring him off. I’ve got two brothers who used to cannonball into the garden pond all summer long. If the fish survived that chaos, the squid can handle a little bit of Maddy Tomlinson energy.”

Her eyes flicked back to Isabella, lingering just a little. The sketchbook, the flowers still clinging to her sleeve, and that soft blonde hair catching the light—it all suited her in a way Maddy wouldn’t say out loud, but she couldn’t help thinking Isabella looked like she belonged in her own drawing.

Then Isabella’s quiet words landed, and Maddy’s grin softened despite herself. “Careful, Bernard,” she said, her tone playful but warmer underneath. “Say things like that, and I might actually believe you like having me around.” She smirked, though her voice dipped just slightly lower. “Which would be a terrible mistake, by the way. Once I’ve claimed a spot, I’m impossible to get rid of.”

She let herself flop flat on the grass then, hands behind her head, eyes on the sky. “But… for the record, I kinda like it better with you here too.”

Isabella chuckled, shaking her head at Maddy’s dramatic flair. “Oh. I’m sure the squid would be thrilled to get a handshake from you.” she teased, nudging Maddy with her elbow. “It’s definitely not the slime I’d be worried about, though. What if he’s a really bad dancer and gets all tangled up in those tentacles?” She gave an exaggerated shudder, pretending to imagine the chaos of it. Her voice teasing but there was a warmth underneath, like she was more amused than she was letting on.

The way Maddy sprawled out like she owned the world didn’t even seem out of place, like she was as natural as the tree overhead. Isabella couldn’t help but smile at how she fit in so easily, even with her endless energy and that whole “I’m-impossible-to-get-rid-of” vibe she had going on.

For a second, Isabella felt that quiet pull in her chest, something warm that she didn’t really know how to name. It was easier not to say it out loud, so she just nudged Maddy’s foot with her own, a quiet kind of gesture that felt more natural than speaking it. "The squid’s tough so don’t worry." she said, the words almost slipping out without thinking. A hint of softness under the teasing.

Her hand lingered over the page of her sketchbook, drawing slow circles, as if trying to hide the way she was smiling to herself. "But, yeah," she added, more lightly now, “you can stay, I guess. Just... don’t scare him off, okay? Because if I don't have him as my muse, I'll start drawing you. You would like that though, wouldn't you~?

Madeline propped herself up on her elbows, eyes flicking toward Isabella’s sketchbook again before she quickly looked away with a laugh.
“Honestly? I’d love it if you drew me. Like—actually love it. But let’s be real, I’d probably ruin your page.

She gestured toward the lake, the trees, even the squid drifting lazily in the water. “All this stuff is… I don’t know. Elegant. Graceful. The kind of thing that actually deserves to be in a sketch. Me?” She plucked another leaf from her hoodie sleeve and gave a lopsided grin. “I’m more the type to trip over my own feet and face-plant in the mud. Not exactly picture-perfect.

Maddy let out a breath that was half a laugh, half something smaller. “Other girls can sit pretty and look like they belong in your art. I’m just—” she shrugged, smirk tugging back into place, “the messy one who shows up and ruins the aesthetic.

She nudged Isabella’s foot lightly, her grin returning with more energy. “So yeah. If you want a challenge, Belle , I’m right here. But don’t blame me when your sketchbook starts looking like it caught a hurricane.”
She looked at Isabella realizing she called her Belle "You dont mind me calling you Belle right? Thought it suited you.

Isabella blinked, her pencil still poised mid-air as Madeline spoke. She couldn’t help the smile tugging at her lips. Typical Maddy, always overthinking herself like this. She shook her head, setting the pencil down on her sketchbook with a soft sigh.

That’s complete nonsense,” Isabella said, her voice light but firm, her eyes meeting Maddy’s. “You’re not ruining anything. Honestly, chaos is way more fun to draw anyway. It’s real. Perfect? Ugh, that’s just…boring. Everything’s all neat and polished and ew. You think the pretty stuff’s worth more because it looks like it belongs in a frame? Nah.” She paused for a second, thinking. She picked up her pencil again and started drawing Maddy.

Besides, you’re the one who makes things interesting. I’d rather capture the weirdness and the mess. That's where the life is. You’re right, you're not like those girls who sit pretty, but that’s exactly why I’d want to draw you. You’re not pretending to be perfect. It's better that way.

She laughed softly, nudging Maddy's foot in return. “And don’t even get me started on the whole ‘ruining the aesthetic’ thing. The aesthetic needs you to mess it up. It’s what makes it real.

Isabella grinned and added, “And for the record, I do like Belle. You can call me that anytime. I like it better than ‘Isabella’ anyway. I love when people give me nicknames! I have a few more. Izzy, that's my most common and favourite one. Then Iz and Bella.

Madeline groaned dramatically, throwing her hands over her face.

“Ugh, Bernard—sorry, Belle—you’re actually out here making me sound like some kind of masterpiece. Newsflash: I’m a walking disaster. If you really want ‘real,’ you’d better be ready to sketch me tripping over my own shoelace or sleeping right in the middle of class. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.”

She peeked out between her fingers, grinning despite herself. “And okay, fine. Maybe chaos is more interesting than ‘perfect.’ But I’m telling you now, if I ever catch you hanging my crooked face up in a frame, I’m planning a heist to steal it back.”

When Isabella mentioned nicknames, Maddy sat up straighter, eyes practically lighting up. “Hold on—you like nicknames? That’s dangerous information to give me, Belle. I’ve got a whole arsenal ready. Izzy, sure, that’s cute. Bella, fancy. But Belle? That’s mine now. You’re stuck with it forever. Sorry, I don’t make the rules.”

She leaned back on her elbows again, shooting her a smug little grin. “Guess I’m officially the designated aesthetic ruiner and the nickname master. You’re welcome.”

Maddy looked over at the giant squid in the water as she lay flat on the ground with her elbows perched up, lost in thoughts. Her hair cascading down her shoulders. The sunlight making her hazel eyes more lighter in color. She thought how this could be the start of an amazing friendship with many, many things to come

Isabella snorted, covering her mouth as she laughed. “Maddy, you are so dramatic. A masterpiece and a disaster? You sound like modern art. Confusing but somehow brilliant.

She glanced over, raising an eyebrow. “But hey, I like a little chaos. It keeps things from getting boring. Besides, if you trip over your shoelace, I’ll just sketch you mid-fall like it was on purpose. Call it ‘The Art of Gravity.’ I'll make it the most famous painting in the world.

She nudged Maddy lightly with her foot. “And for the record, if you do try to steal a drawing of yourself from me, you better know I’ll just draw another one. And another. You’ll never win that heist. You’d be stuck in a never-ending gallery of your own face.

Isabella smiled at her for a moment, thoughtfully. “You know, I think I needed someone like you. Loud, real, kind of ridiculous. The nickname ‘Belle’ might’ve been risky, but I guess I’m okay being stuck with it. IF it’s you saying it. I don't mind you calling me by my last name either. It actually sounds quite...nice.

She leaned back, looking at the giant squid swimming lazily in the water. Isabella sat up suddenly, grabbing her sketchbook with a dramatic gasp. “Okay, seriously, hold that pose. The light is finally hitting your face just right.” She squinted, pencil in hand, already starting to sketch. But just as she was getting into it, Maddy shifted.

Maddy!” Isabella whined, dragging out her name like it physically hurt. “Don’t move! I’m trying to draw you right!” She huffed, but the grin tugging at the corner of her mouth gave her away. “Honestly, you’re the most difficult muse in the history of art.

Madeline burst out laughing at Isabella’s whine, flopping back onto the grass like she’d been mortally wounded.
“Oh nooo, the tortured artist can’t get her perfect shot!” she groaned, throwing an arm across her forehead for extra drama. “Guess you’ll just have to draw me mid-sneeze or while I’m picking grass outta my hair. Authentic chaos, remember?”

She rolled onto her side, propping her chin on her hand, curls falling in her face as she smirked at Isabella. “Besides, I told you—I’m a terrible muse. I can’t sit still to save my life. You should’ve chosen the squid. At least he knows how to float in one place.”

Her grin softened as she tilted her head. “But… if you’re really that determined, fine. I’ll try to stay still. Just don’t expect me not to pull a stupid face halfway through.” She stuck her tongue out for emphasis before cracking into another laugh.

Maddy let her eyes wander back to the lake, her voice quieter but still laced with playfulness. “You’re ridiculous, Belle. But… kinda glad you picked me anyway.”
