Caught Red-Handed
~ * ~January 2020
Brisk, cloudy
Private to @Annabelle OsborneRuby had found herself coming out to the grounds a lot recently. She had still made regular trips before, but now she would catch herself thinking about going out here. She was often accompanied by her cat, but this time he wasn't with her. She was alone with nature, her thoughts, and her observations. She was quite content with this, as she appreciated some alone time. Time to relax and be peaceful, to observe and analyse without having to voice anything to someone else, time to connect with her surroundings.
She walked across the grounds at a steady pace. Not many people were out here, as it was mostly cloudy and a cool winter's breeze blew. It whistled through the trees, rustled the leaves, and tugged at Ruby's neat, precisely placed hair, which was tied back into a single French braid. The chill on her face was noticeable but not quite unpleasant, and it was worth it. Her cold blue gaze combed the area around her, looking for anything out of the ordinary. It would occasionally settle on something that moved, only to find that it was some form of greenery or a small animal. The girl did not know whether she secretly hoped for something interesting to happen. On one hand, she wanted a peaceful break and could return back to the castle soon, but on the other hand it would be so much more entertaining if she were to experience something new. Hands in her pockets, she glanced up at the sky for a moment, pausing to appreciate the clouds.~ * ~

Annabelle stalked out of the castle. Only an hour earlier she had picked up a book off of the ground. There was no title. It was navy blue with gold designs, and rather small. Confused, she had picked it up and examined it before opening to the cover page. The book firmly refused to open, but something else had happened. Her hands had started to stain red. Annabelle tossed the book to the side as her hands grew a bright, cherry red. Someone had hexed what she had now assumed was a diary, making her literally caught red-handed. But Annabelle hadn't done it intentionally. She'd tried to scrub it off, but it didn't work. She'd apologized to the diary, drawing a few looks from others in her dorm room, and done everything possible. But nothing had happened.
Only one other girl was out there. She was glancing at the sky. Annabelle glowered as she walked past the girl; not at the girl, but at the diary, and everything else. She'd come to the grounds because she'd thought there would be some privacy. But no, fate was determined to laugh in her face.
Maybe this other girl could help, Annabelle thought. But in the mood she was, Annabelle was far more likely to just piss her off, so she let the thought slide. She stared around as the wind blew her loosely tied ponytail into her face. Scowling, she started to climb a tree. It was a nice sturdy maple. She got to somewhere close to the top and stared at her hands. It was only then that she noticed the sensation of eyes on her and glanced down. The only person was the girl.

~ * ~Ruby looked down again after a moment, and now another girl had arrived. She saw her walk past, and she was glaring. What put her in such a bad mood? Ruby rolled her eyes and glanced at the girl again. Now that she could get a better look, she saw that her hands were bright red. What happened? Why didn't she get rid of it? Even if she couldn't scrub it off, she could ask a teacher for help if it was putting her in such a bad mood. Sure, asking for help—especially from an adult—could be annoying and intimidating, and there was the whole "I don't need help from anyone" issue that many had, but it was worth it if that was the alternative.
Letting her eyes wander again, she observed the rest of the grounds. If the girl didn't want anyone to be around her, then Ruby would not make a move. She did not care unless their paths crossed. Surely anyone with common sense would have tried to get rid of the whole issue with their hands. Her gaze eventually travelled back, and the girl was gone. How had she vanished? Ruby considered her tendency to climb trees, so she looked up. There, she was met by the face of the scowling girl. Ruby raised an eyebrow. What, did she expect Ruby to solve her problems? Pretend like she had never seen anything? Give her a medal because she could climb a tree? What did she want?~ * ~

The girl raised an eyebrow. Annabelle looked back at her hands and brought a piece of paper and made a quick origami airplane. Using her ever-present pen, she scribbled a quick writing of, Sorry I’m irritable. I don’t want to talk because I’d most likely annoy you, though I’m sure I have already. She threw it down at the girl. Well. Hope it doesn’t hit her.
Annabelle’s accuracy was usually on point. She hoped today would be the same as usual. Sighing, Anna put her pen back and closed her eyes. The airplane was probably not the smartest thing to do. Then again, Annabelle wasn’t really the master of smart decisions.
Ravenclaw. She remembered the Sorting Hat’s decision. Annabelle felt more like a Hufflepuff or Gryffindor. The Ravenclaw stereotype wasn’t her, and houses were pretty much sorted based on stereotype.
Annabelle opened her eyes and stared at her hands. Stupid notebook.
She sighed and looked down. The ground wasn’t far enough away. Annabelle glanced around and saw a larger maple next to her current tree. Sizing up the dimensions, Annabelle made a flying leap from tree to tree and climbed even higher. Climbing, for her, felt like leaving all worries and frustrations down below.
Only she could never get far enough away from them.

~ * ~Interesting. Instead of simply talking, the girl made a paper airplane to send to Ruby. She caught it when it neared her, thankful that the wind hadn't blown it too far off course. She unfolded it and read the message. How peculiar. If the girl wanted to talk, why would she let something like that stop her from talking? Why send a note instead of simply saying it? Why apologise for that at all? Why admit it, for that matter? Did the girl have a lack of resolve, and couldn't stick with a decision? Would she really try to please others over everything?
“Hey!” she called, and waved the paper airplane. “Why not just say this? If you're going to annoy me, at least do it verbally!” she teased, but a grin was on her face. “Also, your paper airplane-making skills aren't bad!” The girl was… leaping trees? Ruby would question that later. She had to yell to talk to her, though, which was a bit of an inconvenience. The stranger puzzled Ruby slightly. So much of what she had done so far seemed illogical. Yet they apparently shared the same love for trees and climbing, and Ruby respected that. Perhaps the girl would rather be left alone, but she had seemed like she wanted (or at least wouldn't mind) human contact, or she wouldn't have sent the note.~ * ~
