Into Our Nets and Out Again!

2 September 2025
It was an awesomé day! The new school term was just starting! None of his friends had died over summer. That was always a plus, but Colin did know that Fyre had had a rather less than pleasant summer. Colin's first thought had been what a bloody tosser! when he heard that she and Simon broke up just after school ended. And then like five hundred other things happened to his best friend that it sounded like one of those operas Muggles watched whilst in the bath! Kidnapping! Father died!? What was going on in Fyre's life all of a sudden!
"Honestly, Fyre, slow down!" Her story came tumbling out of her mouth at a whopping fifty miles an hour! "It's like one of those soapy operations ye look at in yer tell a visor! Ye know the ones, Fyre! The operas Muggles watch whilst taking their baths!" Colin was super proud of himself for remembering the term that Professor Galim had taught them. "I honestly don't understand why Muggles watch operas in a bath house though! I mean! What if their opera glasses get all wet and they go to reverse the owl to opera glass transfiguration! Poor owlies! They'd be all water logged!"
Colin's brain was trying to follow AngelFyre's story as they worked on their first assignment Colin looked down at the parchments on the desk he shared with AngelFyre. "At least it's literature, this lesson! I love to read, after all! And how badly can even Muggles mess that up?" Everything had gone fine until the new teacher, Professor Cantu, started up about some truly bizarre Muggle weirdness. "Fyre," Colin said; "wh--- how--- I don't get this into our nets thing!"
Colin sighed in exasperation. He desperately wanted to understand the world his best friend and his girl friend came from! His head of messy white hair thunked onto the hard wood of the desk top. "Ow." He raised his head again. AngelFyre had that look in her brilliant blue eyes. The look that said: watch out Colin, ye're in for a double heaping dose of Muggle Malarkey! "Why do they have to make things so difficult and complicated? I mean. Muggle used to have book shops, right? Why did they get rid of them? Why do they have to use nets? Wait!"
Colin blinked. His pond scum green eyes lit with understanding! "Wait! Okay! Okay. I get it now! So, remember that bit about how Muggles how like changing the climate? Radiators and so forth? So! Now that they've got a new climate, they can't drive in their motor cars any more on account of too much nasal congestion, and there's always blockages in the streets. Hm. That's a lot of bogeys, Fyre! Anyway," Colin said with a little flourish of his left hand; "Now they've got to use boats to get to the book shops, and that's where the net comes in! They toss it through the book shop door, and then they say: 'look! the books are coming into our nets!'"
Colin smiled, super excited that he actually grasped the concept of muggle into our nets on the first go! He turned his parchment ninety degrees sideways and began to write his assignment furiously. "Usually it takes me four or five times through to understand muggledom! But this time I got it in one! Professor Cantu is going to be very pleased, I'm sure!" he said excitedly.
"So wait," he said. "There has to be more to the story, Fyre!" Colin rested his head in his hand as he looked over towards AngelFyre. "Start from the beginning again! I know ye were all out of sorts in July when we were at Êcrého. Huh! I really did think Simon was a terribly git after that! It's like with Emmi. Her Auntie Nora asked me to keep looking after her. I'm telling you Fyre, I want to marry that girl one day soon! I'd never let her go! Though I reckon Simon had a good reason..."
