Private to @Vera MendaciRuby visiting the library was hardly close to being a rare occurrence. She would sometimes sit and read, draw, write, or work on homework, or she would just pop in to check out more books and return her latest ones. Regardless of what she was doing, she liked libraries. They had a certain feel to them that couldn't be found anywhere else. All the knowledge, too… Ruby adored learning. She was constantly finding ways to do that, to try to gain as much knowledge as possible. Books were wonderful, they laid all of it out for her to come and snatch up.
She had completed her homework that would be due soon, so she was just here to learn and relax. One of her notebooks was neatly positioned beside her on the table in case she felt the need to jot down anything that she read about, but she tended to remember most things quite well. It was also for if she got any particular ideas from the books, or wanted to write down any observations of people or things that caught her eye in the rest of the room. The book lay open on the table, her eyes darting across each row, each paragraph, each page, and she was no longer paying attention to anything around her.~ * ~

At first, Vera hated the library. She saw it as a place for just books, something she never cared about. She never cared for reading. She especially didn’t care for reading fiction. Why daydream about things that would never happen? She never understood.
But once she was forced to step in one by her father, Vera observed that the library was very quiet. She learned that it was a place where she could be alone to think and reflect on her thoughts, a place where she could relax, a place where she could listen to music alone. And that, that sounded like paradise.
At the moment, she was trying to find her necklace that had broken its clasp. It had fallen somewhere around here, she remembered. She exhaled slowly, brushing her purple hair behind her ear. If I was a bright purple necklace, where would I be?
She definitely didn’t want to ask someone to help her find it. She hated people with a passion. They were loud, annoying, stupid, wild pests that made her cover her ears and lose her train of thought. Thankfully, she couldn’t see anybody near her but a girl at a table, seemingly just reading. If she was quiet, the girl wouldn’t notice her, and she would hopefully be able to find her necklace without a hitch.
Unfortunately, the universe was cruel and Vera stumbled, tripping over a book on the ground and hitting a bookcase next to her.
God, I’m so clumsy...! was Vera’s first thought before books started to fall off the shelf above her.

~ * ~Ruby was going to just have a nice, peaceful time reading, and then then there was a thud, making her spin around to see a girl falling. Ruby was out of her seat in a flash. She would not pretend that it was because she cared about the girl, because in all honesty she did not. She did not know who she was, nor did she care. It was the books that she was eyeing.
Deftly, she managed to sweep in and catch most of them, pushing them back onto the shelf. She picked up the few that had made it to the ground with a clatter, narrowing her icy eyes. “Are you alright?” she asked. What made her feel obligated to ask that if she didn't care, hm? Perhaps it was that she was a prefect, or that it was basic courtesy. After all, members of a pure-blood household were taught how to act properly.
Her book still lay open on the table, a fact that she was all too aware of. If only she had been able to read without an interruption. The few books that had escaped her arms a moment before had landed with a series of thuds, and the other girl's careless action would likely have caused some others to lose focus and be momentarily distracted. Ruby knew that it had been an accident—surely no one would do that on purpose—but that didn't make her feel any more sympathy for her fellow student.~ * ~

Vera coughed from the ground and pushed a book off of herself. The books were very dusty, dirtying a few some of her clothing. Then she heard a voice from above her, a girl who seemed a bit older than her.
“Are you alright?”
She almost rolled her violet eyes, but refrained from doing so. She also tried to keep a pleasant look on her face, as glaring would be very rude, especially to the girl who just ran over to help, but her eyes were a blazing flame.
No, no, no. Not people, she thought to herself, just the one thing I wanted to avoid.
She stood up and brushed herself off, gathering a few books.
“I’m just fine, thank you very much,” Vera replied.
She tried to rearrange the books back onto the shelf- after all, she wasn’t going to just leave them there, she wasn’t a horrible person- and a sour thought crossed her mind.
Because of the mess I made here, I’ll never be able to find my necklace. Wonderful.
She made eye contact with Ruby and decided to take the chance. The girl was already there, so why not?
“Wait, do you see a purple necklace anywhere? I dropped it somewhere around here before causing this mess.”

~ * ~Ruby briefly studied the girl's expression. Angry? Embarrassed? Frustrated? She was polite enough, but her eyes… her eyes were angry, fiery. Ruby had no qualms with leaving if the girl so desired, as she hadn't particularly wanted to be here helping her in the first place. The books were now all safely back on the shelf, so there wasn't much to worry about. The girl had just tripped, that wasn't a big deal. People did that all the time, and if she was actually hurt then she could go to the Hospital Wing and get fixed up quickly.
The girl claimed she was fine, and Ruby wasn't going to think more about it. If she said she was fine, then she was, and if she wasn't, it was no longer her responsibility since the girl had done nothing to indicate that she was in pain.
The girl made eye contact with her, asking about a purple necklace… Ruby would have thought that that would be pretty recognisable considering the colour, and that if she had seen it, she would remember. However, she had been reading the entire time and therefore wasn't paying attention to people's lost accessories. “I haven't seen it, no. Have you tried retracing your steps yet? I doubt it will have gone far. If you really want, I can try looking with you.” Her offer appeared kind and generous on the surface, but there was the slightest hint of a sneer in her voice. Had the girl even bothered searching on her own yet?~ * ~

“I’m not stupi-“
Vera clapped her hands over her mouth and bit back her tongue, choosing not to finish her sentence: I’m not stupid; I wouldn’t have asked for your help if I hadn’t looked myself yet. What do you take me for, some lazy twat? She could have chosen to be that sassy, but the want to find her necklace overpowered her hatred of being social. The girl would never help her with her search if she was rude like that.
Damn. Not being snarky was difficult.
She appreciated Ruby’s offer, she really did. But this was one of the first times anyone had offered to help her, and she wasn’t used to kindness like that. She’d really have to keep her temperature in check.
God, I hate talking to people.
“I apologize, ma’am. How rude of me.” She bowed her head slightly. “Yes, I have tried looking around here multiple times, today and yesterday. I was thinking maybe a poltergeist took it, but they rarely visit the library...”
She sighed from a mixture of exasperation, frustration, and fatigue. The blaze in her eyes lessened ever so slightly. Do it for your mother’s necklace, Vera. “Thank you for offering...I think it would help a lot if there were two pairs of eyes searching instead of one.”
...What did I put myself into?
