Eve of the Moon
@Catriona Staverly
Kyle woke with a sudden start. He was breathing heavily and covered in a cold sweat as his eyes darted around the dark room. He could hear the panicked breaths of Duke and the leaves crinkling under his claws. The smell of fear lingered as the visions from his nightmare faded, the trees giving way to the posts of his bed and the coarse fur replaced with his shirt and pajama pants. He didn't know why he bothered trying to sleep this close to the full moon...he knew exactly what sleep brought him during this time. Nightmares of pain and fear of the beast he can never escape, waiting to consume him and take control.
He slipped out of bed and pulled on his black boots and leather jacket before leaving his dorm and making his way downstairs to the common room. His skin was clammy and paler than usual, the bags under his eyes were very noticable and if someone were to touch his forehead they would think him suffering from a bad fever. Pre-Transformation was the worst the boy had ever felt before being afflicted with this curse, or since. The addition of his nerves being fried and his temperament harder to keep under wraps only made it worse for the people around him who he couldn't avoid during this time.
All Kyle knew was he needed to wear himself out. Burn off this energy, this aggression, and hopfully just slump unnoticed in a corner somewhere until it was time for his nightly dose of wolfsbane before going to hide in his dorm once again.
Once the sun had rose fully Kyle stepped out of the common room and made his way down to the entrance hall and outside. He shielded his eyes from the sun and winced slightly at the assault on his senses, the smells of the dirt, the grass, the water the stone, the everything all around him even harder to ignore during this time as it seemed the beast inside him was more alert to its surroundings.
Kyle walked a bit away from the entrance until he came to a tree in the shade and he laid his hands on it and pressed his forehead against the tree and let out a heavy sigh. It had been two years almost since he was been cursed, and it never became any easier. It seemed every month he found himself suffering more, more angry, more alone. He hated the curse, the wolf who did this, himself, everything. With a frustrated snarl he pulled back and punched the tree infront of him. The expenditure of energy felt good, and the pain in his knuckles just sent a little surge of Adrenalin into his blood. he took a step back and threw another punch, and another, and another. he was grunting both from the exertion of the attacks, as well as the pain from the bark cutting into his knuckles. Kyle didn't care though. The pain reminded him he was still human, atleast for now, and it was pain he deserved.

RPing as Catriona Staverly | text color #351c75Catriona had always been one of those weird morning people. Perhaps it was decades of leaving events too early to go to bed and waking up at the crack of dawn. Or maybe it was the silence and lack of people. Either way, she'd taken to waking up early to take walks down by the lake and the grounds. It was nice to watch the sun rising in the cool air, the sky stained pink and purple. It made her feel oddly nostalgic, but she could never tell what for. Sometimes (if she was feeling particularly rebellious) she would take off her shoes and socks and run in the dewy grass. It made her feel like the heroine of a gothic novel or something.
She hadn't planned on taking a walk that morning, but she'd woken up early and figured she'd do it anyway. What was the harm? It wasn't like she'd bump into anyone; Hogwarts was generally quiet in the early mornings (though Quidditch players were a notable exception).
So, she pulled herself out of bed and dressed quickly, making an executive decision to forgo the socks altogether. They'd just get wet and dirty anyways and she didn't want to add to the house elves' workload. After a "quick" trip down many flights of stairs (silently insulting whoever decided those were a good idea), she found her way outside.
It was bright and cooler than Catriona had expected, but it didn't really matter to her. Her shoes were quickly ditched under a tree where she'd (hopefully) find them later.
She'd only been walking for a couple of minutes when she saw him. DeRook, punching a tree. She'd figured that kind of stuff only happened in books, but there he was, punching a tree and not even wincing as the bark hit his knuckles. She moved forward, almost instinctually, wanting to drag his fists away and wrap them. She shook her head abruptly. They weren't friends. They'd barely even spoken last time she saw him. She really shouldn't care, but somehow, she did. He wouldn't want her to disturb him right? He was clearly busy. She should probably leave. She turned and managed to make it two steps before she heard the thunk of flesh hitting wood and turned back around. She couldn't just leave him there. She just couldn't
Sighing, she walked over to where he was, wincing every time she saw his fist hit the wood. "DeRook?" She refrained from asking him if he was alright; clearly something was wrong. Why else would he be punching a tree. "You're up early." Too casual. Now she sounded weird. Why had she even walked over? All of this was a terrible idea.

Eve of the Moon
With each punch into the tree there was a red flash of pain in his mind. The exertion from the blows, and the near constant stream of Adrenalin was beginning to take its toll as sweat dripped down his forehead. His arms began to burn and he heard his own ragged breaths in between the wet smacks of cut knuckles against bark. It is unclear just how much longer he would have kept going if interrupted but suddenly a voice cut through the monotonous sounds
"DeRook? You're up early"
Kyle Stopped. He reached his right hand forward and pressed it against the tree, feeling his palm become wet with against the blood under it. His eyes locked onto his knuckles, they were cut up and bleeding but the angry youth could not care less ultimately. He turned around and looked at the direction of the voice and he saw that girl again. Once before at the Lake, and once in the ballroom. He still hadn't gotten her name, or even really had the time to come up with a nickname...though it seemed every time he turned around, she was there. Not unlike a shadow.
"What do you want Shadow. I uh...Im in the middle of something..." There was clear frustration coupled with his Irish accent as he spoke, though it was clear he may be trying to convince himself as much as her he was actually in the middle of something.

RPing as Catriona Staverly | text color #351c75Catriona paused, frowning slightly. Shadow, huh? It was an odd name, but she wasn't complaining. She was tempted to correct him, but she doubted it would matter. She'd only seen him, what, three times before? Including this one. They weren't even on a first name basis. But weren't nicknames an intimate, friend thing? It didn't seem like that here, not with this context.
Her frown deepened a little. Kyle DeRook was an enigma. He commanded the same sort of respect that Alexx did, but somehow it was different. Alexx had an aloof calm to her while DeRook seemed to have anger rolling off of him in waves most of the time. It wasn't scary, but his strength seemed disproportionate to his body. Judging by his bleeding knuckles, he'd been punching for a while, which begged the question: why wasn't he uncomfortable? It was odd. He was odd.
She realized she'd been silent for longer than necessary. "Nothing, I just saw you down here and figured I'd say hello. Mornings are nice. Quiet." She shrugged. Keep the conversation going. She could ask about Quidditch... but it wasn't like she knew a ton about Quidditch. She enjoyed it just as much as the next person, but she didn't know enough about the sport to hold a full conversation about it. So, she resorted to the only other thing she could talk about without feeling awkward.
"Do you want bandages for those?" she said, gesturing to his cut knuckles. She didn't say anymore, not wanting to seem overbearing.
