The girls’ bathroom again. Gabriele figured it was his only shot at peace and quiet, because Merlin forbid he tried to practice eyeliner in the Hufflepuff dorms—half of them would tease. Or even worse, the boys lavatories where he was at worse risk of being teased by Slytherins… or his brother. He needed a mirror, decent lighting, and zero audience. And alright, maybe part of him liked the thrill of sneaking in where he wasn’t supposed to be.
Last time, he’d been interrupted by Elizabeth who had dared him to prank some fools in the boy’s bathroom, dressed up in complete drag. Mission successful — for him – but not so much the poor girl who got her hair almost ripped out. Not his proudest moment up to date, even if it had been one more experience to add to his roster of questionable decisions. If anyone brought that up again to make fun of him, he’d deny it until the day he died. Hopefully he’d get some peace and quiet this time around.
Leaning over the sink, Gabi tugged the cap off the half-empty tube of eyeliner he’d stolen from his sister, with his teeth, one hand steadying his wrist. “Don’t fuck it up this time,” he muttered at his reflection, lowering the tip to his lower lash line. He squinted, tongue poking out the corner of his mouth as he carefully dragged it along, stopping halfway to check his progress. A dramatic wing would’ve been badass, but he wasn’t there yet. He needed to start small—clean lines, sharp edges.
His curls fell annoyingly into his face, ruining his flow. “Ma che cazzo,” he grumbled, flicking them out of the way with a shake of his head. He tried again, biting down harder on the cap, this time managing a decent line before smudging it with the heel of his hand. Of course. Gabriele groaned, tilting his head back with an exasperated laugh that echoed off the tiled walls.
The third time his hand slipped and the black ink smeared across his eyelid, Gabriele screamed at this absolute piece of garbage! Where was fucking Elizabeth when you needed her? Say what you want about that girl, but at least she knew makeup and could do a proper, clean line.

It was a mascara emergency. A crisis, perhaps. The Slytherin witch had been drawing calmly in the confines of the courtyard just moments prior. That was until a well-meaning (?) older year student approached. "You have mascara on your nose, by the way."
Maelys had stood in place as the girl walked away. Did she? How had she been sitting in this space, in public, looking embarrassing for so long? The notebook was quickly collected.
Luckily, as was the case most of the time, she had come prepared. Her entire makeup collection was stashed in her book bag. It wasn't large. Maelys had gotten her first real makeup the previous summer. Her mother had taken her to the store and helped her select the perfect set of lip tint, blush, concealer, eyeliner, and mascara. Maelys' favorites were, by far, the eyeshadow palettes. The girl believed in glitter whenever possible. In this case, it was applied loosely to both her cheekbones and eyelids. The former were painted in a gentle shade of rosy pink similar to the Igari makeup trend popular in Japan.
Hastened footsteps brought the young witch to the fourth floor lavatories. She opened the door with a slam and made a beeline for the sinks. "It was there!" The Slytherin let out a groan. A stubborn smudge of mascara ran right along the edge of her nose bridge, bleeding into her blush. She had a mustache of sorts.
As she was focused on the task at hand Mae hadn't thought to check the room. Hence, the presence of a boy startled her. Had her eyes deceived her? Maelys checked again. Most of the boys she knew acted like idiots. They didn't care about things like makeup, clothes, or literally any other interest the eleven-year-old had.
"Sorry!" The apology came naturally after the outburst. Maelys offered a small smile. She typically wasn't too good with talking to boys and, hence, avoided it but this one seemed less troll-like than most. "What type of eyeliner is that?"

When he thought he could have a moment of peace and quiet, another girl came darting through the door. Gabriele paused his screaming, watching the girl through the mirror with some strange black line on her face, like a spell gone wrong that had made a magically grown mustache spread up her nose or something. Without as much as a glance his way, she darted towards one of the sinks to examine whatever was on her face.
Interruption aside, he too, was kind of curious to know what had happened to make her look like that. Craning his neck, he tried to get a better look, his own epic fail eyeliner forgotten. Alas, it seemed to be just makeup. Disappointing, but now his own didn’t seem so bad, after all. At least it did little to diminish her general appearance, however. Her outfit was cute, likewise her face was pretty. For a moment he forgot that he wasn’t supposed to be there. Pretty sure it was strictly prohibited and could potentially risk him detention. Not that the threat of detention had ever stopped Gabriele.
Maybe the girl had forgotten too, because instead of screaming at him to get the fuck out, as most girls probably would have when finding a strange boy in the bathroom, she turned to him and asked what eyeliner he was using. Gabi glanced down at the tube with a dumb expression. He’d never bought makeup for himself, neither was he familiar with what brands could be considered good. With the money his sister was getting now when she was out of school, he assumed she only bought high-end stuff. Who was he kidding? Dads always bought her the expensive things, probably still does! Some really have it fucking easy.
Without any prior makeup knowledge, the eyeliner was labeled with ‘DIOR’, so safe to say it was that. “Dior, something. I don’t know, is it supposed to be any good?” He shrugged, it got the job done… when it wasn’t smearing all over his eyelid. He swore that at some point he should just join a rock band, do a full-lid smokey eye, and call it a look. "Because if it is, they must have fucked it up with this one. It sucks ass." Or maybe it was just Gabriele who needed more practice.

She would have told him to get out. That would have been the normal response. However, Maelys, at her core, was non-confrontational. Besides, bathroom was empty aside for her and he didn't seem to be going near the stalls. Besides what if she told him to get out and it turned out that he had an permission to use the girl's room? Maelys would be the one who ended up looking like an idiot. It was best to let it be.
Naturally, the abomination on her face was of greater importance. She took her makeup pouch from her bag, setting it carefully on the rim of the sink. Maelys had luckily remembered makeup wipes. She reached into the pack, grabbing the first one and locating the side with the little opening tab. She would rather not continue the conversation until the mustache abomination was gone. No makeup was better than whatever her current situation was.
Maelys removed the wipe from the package and began scrubbing. Waterproof mascara might be good for many reasons but it wasn't friendly to beginners. How the substance had ended up on the Slytherin's nose was a mystery. She had done her usual routine in her dormitory. Perhaps she had rubbed her eyes too much...
Crisis averted. Maelys set the wipe down as she checked one last time in the mirror. It had come off quite quickly. Now to fix the rest of her makeup.
Her eyes drifted towards the boy in the mirror once more. Right. There was a boy in here. She hummed at his comment, "Dior is definitely good, I think. It's luxury... Weird that it's not working then." The memory came back to Mae. She had seen the brand in stores before but never in the places she or her mother shopped. Everything in Maelys' bag came from the drugstore, not that she knew the difference or cared much. She had never experienced the difference between products.
Hence, in her experience, an eyeliner was an eyeliner. There were different types, of course, but none were notably evil or conspiratory in nature. "How? Where are you trying to put it?" The answer was not clear from the boy's movements.

With her weird mustache situation wiped away, the girl turned back to Gabriele, like she just remembered he was there. Unbeknownst to the girl, she called him stupid, an idiot and incompetent at makeup with just two sentences. At least that’s how he interpreted it. Weird that it’s not working?! Anyone could tell that Gabriele just sucked ass at doing this winged eyeliner shit. Then when she asked where he was trying to put it, he was sure she was taking the piss. Was she trying to embarrass him, or was she just clueless?
His cheeks flushed red. “My eyelid, where else do you put eyeliner?” Gabi pointed at his messily black-smudged eyelids, definitely not a purposeful choice of design, with an incredulous expression. Only his imagination would stop him, he supposed. With the panda situation going on around his eye-sockets, wasn’t it obvious?
As perhaps genuinely curious or helpful the girl was trying to be, though her after-thought about him seemed more dismissive than interested, Gabriele could only hear mockery coming out of her pretty mouth.
Turning on the water and cupped his hands beneath the spray, holding them there until the lukewarm water had pooled in the palm of his hands. Gabriele rolled his eyes, muttering, “Maybe you should try it, since you clearly know so much about eyeliner technique.” Lowering his face towards the basin, he squinted his eyes shut and splashed the water up in his face, scrubbing his eyes with exaggerated aggression.
When he lifted his head back up and blinked at his reflection in the mirror, he somehow looked even worse than before. Like his sister Rosetta had looked after her first boyfriend broke up with her, mascara and shit stained all over her cheeks. Breaking borders, the eyeliner was not just a mess on his eyelids, it had moved around and smudged his whole face. Great. Fucking great.
