The day started as usual with only a few hours of sleep. But Olivia forced herself out of bed. She changed and went up to breakfast. She was early, but that was what she liked best. After a quick breakfast, she thought she would get some fresh air before the first lesson.

The lessons were slow going. Olivia got her homework back with a D. How could her grade have dropped so quickly? She crumpled the paper into a small ball and burned it with her wand.

When the lesson was over, Olivia was the first to leave the classroom. Her hands were shaking so she looked for the first empty classroom. It was pitch black and Olivia sat under a table in the corner. She tried to take deep breaths to calm herself and stop her body shaking, but her thoughts made it impossible.

They said: You are so bad, you are worthless, you are ugly, you are a monster, you are a disappointment, not even your own father loves you, you have no friends, you are lonely.

Finally, the thoughts became too much for Olivia and she broke down. She pulled her knees up to her chest and leaned her forehead against them. The tears came without her being able to stop them. Everything seemed hopeless. What if what the voices in her head said were true. What if she just had to sit here for the rest of her life. Alone, unable to do anything wrong.

Nova's mood was rather blue that day. The days felt a bit like they were blending up that week. Of course, she had thought a bit too much of it. It was just one of those days for her where everything blurs, and she was okay with it, albeit the guilt she felt for not putting in much effort into her tasks.

After a—in Nova's opinion—very impractical lesson, (Someone had let their spider loose by accident and everyone had freaked out.) she decided to take a bit of space for a moment between classes. She strolled through the corridors, which were semi-filled with students chatting and laughing.

Nova felt a bit conscious about her appearance that day. It was, what most people would say, a very bad hair day. Her curls were frizzy and all over the place, and she didn't even have a scrunchie to tie it back. Waking up late definitely wasn't a smart decision to make, but no matter. She just slapped a hairband onto her head and called it a statement.

Despite her usual complaints about classes and homework, she always felt a pang of disappointment when she got anything lower than an E, as if she wasn't good enough. She let out a small sigh and found a door to a seemingly empty classroom. Pushing it open slowly, she blinked to adjust to the light, or lack thereof.

Not having the energy, she slipped her wand out of her robes and making a loop. "Lumos." She muttered as the tip of her wand lit up with a small yet bright light. As she began to set her bag down, she heard the quietest cry and shaky breathing.

Trying to locate the cause of the sound, Nova stepped forward hesitantly until she reached a desk. Taking a small sidestep, prepared to flee if it was a pixie, she found... a girl. Shaking and trying to steady her breathing. Nova's brows furrowed in concern as she looked down at her.

"Are you alright? Would you like a handkerchief?" She asked, pulling one out from her satchel. She crouched down next to her, not quite holding it out yet keeping it close enough to be considered as an offer.

Olivia looked up at the girl. She took the handkerchief and blew her nose. Then she wiped her wet face on her sleeve. “Sorry,” Olivia finally managed, a little hoarse from crying for so long. “I didn’t mean for anyone to see me like this.”

Then she stared straight ahead for a few seconds. “It’s just been a lot lately,” Olivia continued, trying not to start crying again. Then there was no stopping: “It’s just that I feel so alone. My dad never answers my letters and didn’t even want to spend the summer with me. On top of that, my grades have dropped significantly and I have no one to talk to. Plus, I’m a werewolf and that doesn’t make things any better.” Olivia pressed a hand to her mouth after he said that last thing. She glanced at the girl next to her. Would she manage to explain away what she had just said? No, the damage was already done.

But maybe she could fix her mistake anyway. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to just drop everything on you like that,” Olivia said, looking down at her hands. “My name is Olivia… can you… can you keep it a secret? That I’m a werewolf?” she then asked cautiously. She couldn’t really stop her from spreading it, but it was worth a try.

Nova nodded along as the girl ranted on, but her eyebrows shot up in surprise at the mention of being a werewolf. Not wanting to seem judgmental, she quickly schooled her expression into a more neutral one, sitting down on the floor in front of her. The girl quickly apologized, mumbling her name.

Nova quickly shook her head, smiling slightly despite the surprise she felt. “No, it’s fine!” She said, waving a hand dismissively. “I’ve been having a pretty—okay-ish?—week too. I don’t mind, really.” Her tone was reassuring, but her eyes widened slightly as the girl, Olivia, asked her to keep a secret. Nova hadn’t ever met someone that was a werewolf, but the earnest way she had asked made Nova feel a little bad.

Giving her yet another nod, Nova fiddled with her hairband which had fallen off of her head. “Sure, of course I can.” She said quietly, smiling. It felt strange, knowing this huge part of someone’s life while having only just met them, but Nova wasn’t one to spread people’s secrets around like they were a quick joke to make.

She met Olivia’s eyes and offered the warmest smile she could manage. “You don’t have to worry about me freaking out,” she said, hoping her expression said it better than words could before adding jokingly. “Having a werewolf friend is really cool, anyways. I don’t know anyone who’d say otherwise, y’know.”

Olivia was surprised that she wanted to keep it a secret. But Olivia smiled a little, relieved that it was so. Then she was even more surprised that she thought it was cool to have a werewolf friend and that others would think the same. Olivia had never thought that before. “Really?” she asked, still a little hoarse. “Do you really think it’s cool?”

Olivia looked at the girl in front of her and was genuinely happy that they had met. “You never said your name, what is it?” Olivia asked and smiled. She smiled so wide that her fangs were visible, it was almost the first time she had done that. But she didn’t regret it.

Olivia tucked a lock of hair behind her ear and looked around for her bag that she had thrown away when she came in. She saw it in a corner and picked it up. When she opened it, she was horrified. “No. No no no no no no,” she exclaimed, turning the bag upside down. Out onto the ground came all her books and homework… completely destroyed by an ink bottle that must have broken.

Olivia looked over at the girl. "Do you know any way to fix that hair?" she asked, hoping she did.

Nova winced sympathetically as all the contents of Olivia’s bag came crashing down in a mix of ink and stained books. She wrinkled her nose at the sharp scent of spilled ink going everywhere. “Well, that’s not ideal, is it?” She muttered mostly to herself as she stood up and stared at the pile in front of her.

“Well… maybe we can try to salvage it a little before it’s all ruined.” She said before pulling out her wand and flicking it at the mess. “Scourgify!” Almost instantly, a large amount of the parchment and books lightened in color as the ink washed off. Grinning in victory and pride, she picked up some of Olivia’s books and papers and set them on the table nearby.

In between the stacks, she saw a paper with a sharp D written across it. Glancing away, she pretended not to notice anything and carefully sliding the paper into a corner. Nova let out a relieved sigh, brushing back her frizzy hair from her face. “There, not too bad now!” She said cheerfully, turning to smile at Olivia. “See? Not everything’s lost. We can fix the rest later.”

She gave a quick look at Olivia before turning back to the table. “Alright, let’s just get this separated before the next class starts.” Nova bent down and began gathering the remaining papers, stacking the salvageable ones neatly. A few of the books were still stained, but she set them aside, muttering under her breath about how clumsy ink bottles could be.

Olivia's face lit up as the girl helped her. Olivia began to gather the books and put them back in her bag. "Thanks," she murmured, looking at the girl.

She looked away for a moment while she thought. Then she turned back. "Did you mean that? That you think it's cool to have a werewolf as a friend?" she asked cautiously. "I've never really thought about it before. I always thought everyone was hateful towards us because of how we're portrayed in books and stuff."

Olivia was stuffing the last few papers into her bag when she saw the girl's gaze fall on one of Olivia's homework papers with a big D on it. Olivia blushed and looked down at the ground. Then she quickly wrinkled the paper and put it in her bag. "Your name is Nova, right?" Olivia asked. "I've seen you in class. You got ten points for Hufflepuff when you passed that spell on your first try."

Olivia closed her bag and ran a hand through her short brown hair. “God, my hair is crazy,” she muttered, laughing a little. “No matter how much I brush and fix it, a strand always wants to stick out.” Olivia pointed to a strand that stuck out right above her ear.
