Avis giggled at the thought of Maisie encountering a giant spider in their dorm room. Her face grew solemn for a moment when she realized the girl would most likely try to duel the thing rather than storm off in distress. She snorted lightly in amused affection.

"You should meet Maisie. I think you'd like her," the Ravenclaw mentioned absentmindedly. Aleks and her roommate would be... a chaotic pair to say the least. Both enjoyed a good adventure and both didn't seem to mind going to extreme measures in order to have a bit of fun. Maybe on second thought, Avis should keep the two very separate.

As they quickened their pace towards death (as Aleks had put it), Avis kept her wand arm aloft, trying to avoid any other encounters with eight legged fiends or otherwise. She'd heard doxy's liked to occupy cozy dark spaces and wouldn't put it past one to make a home of this particular tunnel. Perhaps even several. Her eyes widened at the thought. It would be just their luck to run into a doxy family reunion of sorts.

A few minutes later, Avis and Aleks found themselves standing in front of a fork in the passageway, Avis inquiring as to which path they should take. She studied her companion as he retreated into thought for a moment, the grime on his face taking away from the wise scholar he'd suddenly turned into. The Ravenclaw struggled to keep a laugh under wraps, but quieted when the boy began to spout out a series of logical observations as to where exactly they might be.

"...Right," Avis said slowly, struggling to follow. She had no idea when Aleks had noticed moonlight but perhaps she'd been too focused on finding a way out of the previous corridor to notice. Her brain tended to lock in on the task at hand and jump forward to the next one rather than take a moment to plan and study the situation. The girl suddenly felt a surge of gratitude towards her accidental friend. He'd so far gotten her out of several scrapes and they'd just met!

Avis followed the direction in which their joined hands had been pointed with her eyes and glanced down yet another foreboding corridor but the subtle light at the end hinted at an opening. So Aleks was right.

She glanced back up, taking note of the quiet maturity that had so suddenly taken over his sharp facial features. It was something she hadn't expected from him but something she appreciated nonetheless.

The Ravenclaw let herself be tugged forward, feeling less independent about being dragged all over the place as her newfound respect for the boy set in.

"Alright, you're still ridiculous. But now your ridiculous and brilliant. Congrats, genius," she replied to his directions with a smile. "But I'm not sure they'd believe the toothbrush story. My toothbrush is soundly asleep in the bathroom down the hall from my dorm room. So let's just say we got dragged out of our beds by insomniac trolls! Much better story in my opinion," she joked as they came to the end of the corridor, the wall rising up in front of them. Hmm, maybe another Dissendium was needed?

But before Avis could speak, the wall seemed to split apart of its own accord, as if it had sense them there. "Nox," the girl whispered in awe as the moonlight washed over their faces, leaving glinting twinkles in their eyes. As the Ravenclaw's vision adjusted, she realized they'd reached the grounds somehow (Aleks knew apparently) and that they were currently standing over a ledge.

She narrowed her eyes, shooting a fake glare in Aleks' direction at the bathroom comment. "If you want to find a different passageway to Sauber's toilet, be my guest," she joked in response and studied the drop in front of them. It wasn't too high up but still inconvenient. Strange spot for an entry point. Perhaps whoever created it had wings?

Before she could move, Aleks seemed to be testing the waters as he shimmied down and let his legs dangle out over the fresh August air. With a start, she noticed how much soot he'd been covered with from her...accidental explosion and silently wondered if she looked just as dirty. Avis grimaced, avoiding a glance at her own clothes, but her grimace turned into a scowl when the boy suggested he catch her, as if she wasn't quite capable on her own. She sniffed haughtily and folded her arms.

"I can managed that drop quite on my own, thank you," Avis said, sounding a bit more prissy than she'd wanted to. Still, she hated when people tried to do things for her, despite however nice they were trying to be. Aleks laughed in response which twisted a small smile from her own lips. He leaned forward, insisting on going first still and Avis watched as he leapt off the ledge, fear eluding him. The Ravenclaw grinned. Apparently she wasn't the only impulsive one present. Her eyes remained glued on the boy as he caught himself in a crouch, feet thumping against the grass below. She noticed him wince and a flare of concern brushed over her features.

"You alright?" she called down but the Slytherin was already standing with a casual roll of his shoulders. He grinned up at her and her lips twisted in amusement. Crazy idiot.

"Still not dead!" he called up to her and she stuck out her tongue in mock disappointment. The girl inched closer to the edge, eyes still on her companion and opened her mouth.

"Okay, then here I com—" she began but never finished her sentence. With a surprised screech, Avis felt the edge crumble out from underneath her and in a moment that felt impossibly slow, she lost her footing and slipped out over the edge, flipping in the air with her back towards the grass, wide panicked eyes reflecting the glimmer of stars in the clear night above her.

She was falling. She was falling and the sky looked so... beautiful.

Of course something had to go wrong. Their entire night seemed like a chain of mishaps and the collapse of their last working brain cells. Aleks watched intently as the bold girl perched herself on the edge. Her legs dangled down, still braced against the stone outer wall of Hogwarts. At the sight, Aleks had to briefly reorder his thoughts—because Avis looked dreamily beautiful. Like a wild fury with blue eyes, she sat there, dirty and bright. Moonlight struck the Girl‘s long hair and seemed too intend to make it shimmer. When suddenly a piercing screech cut through her words just as she announced her jump!

Aleks didn’t see the exact cause of her fright. His eyes had been fixed too narrowly on her eyes. But his body already lunged forward, reckless in crossing the distance between them. The pain in his ankle dulled beneath the rush of adrenaline. Air lodged itself in his chest. Aleks saw only Avis falling—her body twisting mid-air, poised for a broken neck. He couldn’t pinpoint the moment his arms reached out, when his eyes widened in protective reflex or when his heart was ready, if needed to be, to leap into death alongside.

Not a sound fled his mouth. Nor was calling out her name written in the protocol! Aleks felt his legs drive down into the muddy ground before his mind even read the situation. Her weight crashed into his forearm, pushing him down a few inches with her. It softened the fall—and still, it took the Slytherin boy by surprise.

“What the—” He exhaled sharply, straightening back into proper posture. Avis, still caught in his arm, was lifted with him by necessity. His brow furrowed deeply as he turned his gaze toward the hole they had come from. An accusatory expression hardened his eyes. It was easy for the Slytherin to spot what happened. Although the wall had sealed itself; a missing stone where the girl had braced explained what must have happened. Aleks glared at the wall with quiet resentment, as if it had personally chosen to try break all their bones at the very end. The boys lips released a barely audible, low growl.

Without realizing it, he curled his arms and drew Avis closer against himself. Their posture began to edge on an exhausted knight hugging his untamed princess. “What a shitty building,” the Slytherin muttered. With another breath, the adrenaline slowly drained from his head, his shoulders and neck loosened. The weight of her body drew him back to the reality—one in which nobody was actual roadkill.

He shifted his gaze back to the untamed wild girl in question and carefully set her down. The heartbeat in his chest slowed, rolling back into the eased state that followed a successful mission of mischief and war-crimes. With her legs safely back on the ground, the boy brushed her sleeves back into proper shape. “So much for still being alive. Guess I didn’t jinx us after all... You good?..”

It all happened so fast. That was perhaps a cliche statement but an accurate one nonetheless. One moment she was gazing up at the stars with morbid awe and the next she was tumbling into a pair of familiar arms. Instinctively, she pulled her limbs inward, forming a sort of awkward ball as Aleks managed to lift the two of them off the ground.

Her eyes shifted to his face in awe, not quite sure what had happened but he wasn't looking at her. Aleks was looking back up at the hole they'd emerged from moments earlier... and the ledge Avis had tumbled over. And he didn't look or sound happy. The girl felt his arms tighten around her as she still dangled helplessly above the ground. Adrenaline pulsed through her veins and her breath began to slow as she realized she was very much still alive and no longer falling through the air.

She gasped in breathless agreement to Aleks' blatant observation. "Aye, someone should probably do something about that," she replied, air slowly coming back into her lungs. Their eyes met as the two began to realize that everything was quite alright and finally, Aleks managed to set Avis back upon her own two feet. She stumbled a bit on first landing, but managed to right herself on two shaky legs as Aleks reached out to straighten the sleeves of her ash-covered sweatshirt. The Ravenclaw paused for a moment as a wash of gratitude and relief flooded over her. Suddenly she reached out and pulled her hero into a quick hug, crumpling up her sleeves all over again. Avis didn't care. He'd saved her life, truly, and the girl was finding that she was very lucky to have found a friend that would go to such lengths. She pulled away after giving him a grateful pat on the back, grimacing momentarily when someone else she wouldn't mind hugging came to mind. But before the Ravenclaw could get angry at herself for such an abominable and unbidden thought, Avis let out a shaky laugh at Aleks' inquiry.

"Not usually a hugger, sorry, but erm... yeah I'm alright, thanks. Suppose it takes a bit more than a tumble to kill me," Avis joked. She swallowed, her throat still dry. "Probably should've just let you help in the first place... but then I wouldn't be able to tell such a great story," the girl admitted, blue eyes twinkling. One Mam would never be hearing, that was for sure.

As they talked, suddenly it struck the Ravenclaw that it was, in fact, still very late (or perhaps early at this point) and they also still desperately needed to make it back to their respective dorms without getting caught. Luckily, Avis knew exactly how to get up to the common room discreetly from here. She glanced at Aleks.

"D'you know how to get back from here? Cause I think I'll be alright... even though you won't be there to save my life again if needs be," she added quietly with a small smile.

A cloud moved slowly into the moonlight, darkening the grounds and Avis shivered involuntarily, despite it being September still. Yep, it was definitely time to get back.

He had just watched the last wrinkles vanish beneath his fingers when Avis suddenly dashed forward. Her hands slipped under his arms and closed around his body, pulling in with surprising force. The Slytherin couldn’t help but compare it to a raccoon snatching up a snack and pressing it against the fur of its chest. The thought alone teased a smile onto his face. Aleks briefly squeezed her playfully tight, and released her in the same breath. All wrinkles have reappeared by now, but who even cares? It was merely an act to calm his own senses.

Having released each other, the chill of the air whipped against his frame. Unlike the cold, Aleks was still warm and lively. How long that would last standing against the night was anyone’s guess. Avis had given him a quick pat on the back before stepping away, offering a small apology and explanation, that she wasn’t a hugger and felt all right. The admission was oddly relieving. For a moment in silence, Aleks studied her blue eyes and pace.

She meant,“Probably should’ve just let you help in the first place… but then I wouldn’t be able to tell such a great story.”
“Keep it up and you can write a book about it,” Aleks replied, a grin finally tugging at his lips. The untamed girl was right—the tale was far more thrilling this way. Aleks drew the fresh air into his lungs and exhaled the rest of his good posture in a long sigh. It seemed banished from his shoulders and neck, collapsing him into the silhouette of a modern depiction of a human sloth.

As he stood, waiting for the last of the goosebumps to fade, a sharper chill swept against him. Or maybe it was only imagination. It could be the adrenaline-soaked heat had had slipped away, off to treat itself to a spa weekend. Aleks turned slightly to the side. His eyes drifted upward, past the night sky’s gray-tinged clouds to the stars above. From down here, they looked somehow wintry too.

Suddenly the question was raised, if he knew how to find his way back from here. Her voice tugged his gaze back to Avis. She insisted she would be fine, even without him standing close by as her rescue. The soft mouth curved into a smile, and Aleks instinctively mirrored it. Slowly a fleeting grin brushed the Slytherin‘s face as he tried to squeeze some of the tension back into his spine.

An answer needed only a moment of thinking, partly to drag his mind back toward clarity—away from raccoons and blazing suns throwing Christmas parties. Aleks knew he had to just turn right somewhere and head down a set of stairs. His duller blue eyes flicked toward the gate. It seemed to him it was the northern one. The wood was crooked and the bushes on the left hinted about the outdoorsy garden area to the left of Hogwarts. Thus, somewhere along that wall there would be a side door. And it would bring him faster to the dungeons and his bed.

Another sigh followed, then with a small nod Aleks answered, “Yeah.., I know how to get back, but I’d rather take a different door than the big ugly one here—it’ll get me to my bed quicker… looks like our paths split then.” Aleks playfully huffed. He already was stepping ceremoniously a step away from Avis toward the left. His faced returned to her.

He lifted his hand in a half-finished wave, already thinking about bed and how to dodge prefects on the way: “We should celebrate this sometime! I’ll send you an owl.”
Preferably at a place different from Hogwart‘s School grounds. Maybe it was time to make use of his fake permission slip? Aleks thoughts began circling, imagining to see Avis again under better terms. Somewhere in the back of his mind he wondered, if Avis is the type to always blow things up. Not that she sets fire to Hogsmeade and accidentaly starts a troll revolution on the way down there.
