"Maybe Christmas doesn't come from a store. Maybe Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more."
It wasn't that Alexx didn't like Christmas. The idea of it was quite nice, actually. Heartwarming, even. She decided that she would like Christmas... If she had ever had one.

That's right. Alexx Séverin had never, in her 13 years on planet earth, celebrated Christmas. Her brothers had tried as they got older. They tried so hard to bring the family together; to celebrate and bring joy to the faces of the two younger sisters. There was only one problem: not one of them knew how. They knew that there were trees involved, and garland, and even stockings. They knew all about the presents and food, and they knew about ornaments and snow globes. But there was something beneath all of that. Something that their family just didn't quite grasp.

Perhaps Vivienne Séverin and Raoul Desjardins had, at one point in time, celebrated with their family. Grand-mére Jeannine didn't seem like the type of person who would celebrate, or even care enough about their children at all to want to. Her poor aunts and uncle, how they all were so solemn and detached from the world, and it was all at the fault of Jeannine Bonheur and Franck Séverin.

But what did the Desjardin family do? Well, Alexx didn't know. She had never met them. Sure, their names had been uttered in private meetings with adults. But it wasn't as if there were any picture frames that had been laid down to hide their face, not when the peering eyes of children for around. They were good people, of that Alexx was sure. Good people that didn't even know that they had four grandchildren out in the world, waiting to be loved. Alexx would have loved them back.

All of that being said, Alexx had decided that she would try to be festive this year. Any effort was better than no effort, and at least she would get some house points out of it. The first place that Alexx could think of was the trophy room. All of those trophies carefully dusted... They needed some garland. And... And there should be a reef on the door or something. Maybe some mistletoe?

But alas, one of Alexx's many problems was her height. She was quite too short to reach the top of the trophy cases where she planned on placing some garland. On her tip-toes she stood, carefully hopping to and from, attempting to get the garland up.

Now, one might question why a mighty witch, one such as Alexx, the third-year student whose knowledge quite clearly was world-renowned, did not simply use her wand? Well, she didn't want to show off, of course! She forgot it in her common room and didn't feel like going back for it. So, because Alexx was ever so humble and didn't wish to embarrass her peers should one see her, as they would soon drop out at the sight of her most amazing levitation charm, she was doing things the hard way. What a model student!

Asking for help wasn't something anyone liked to do, least of all Alexx, who had pride and ego the size of Mars itself (the planet, not her pet dog). But at a certain point, she gave in to all four foot and eleven inches of her and called out for help. "Anyone around? I... I- uhm... Need help." She called out, biting her lip. How utterly embarrassing.

He was busy. As all students should be, he was busy. But he was busy doing nothing. Reid never learned the value of time management and neither did he find himself focused enough to do so. He was always daydreaming and thinking of tomorrow, just as he was now. The student was in a corridor, sitting around to read a book he barely was invested in. He was trying to be more studious with himself, but it was easier said than done.

Who cares about the famous wizard who was famous for Merlin knows what? His head was beginning to feel like it was tied to an anchor, haphazardly drawing his head down as if he wasn't about to slam his cranium against the stone beneath him.. His head raised for the final time, taking a sharp and deep breath as if he just saw the world's end flash before his eyes.

He sniffed and wiped the drool from his mouth, yawning afterwards that caused him to drop the book he was holding. This was a bore, reading was a chore, and homework was a snore. All he wanted to do was run outside and practice for Quidditch, but his body wasn't going to allow him, not when he was sick. Yes, the Hufflepuff boy had fallen victim to a flu despite his effort to actually study for once. Reid's hands picked up the scarf that was discarded beside him and gracelessly wrapped it around his neck to cover half of his face.

He bent over and picked up the text, keeping it under his arm before he headed down the way. That was until in a few steps, he was passing the Trophy Room and a voice reached out to him. But this wasn't just any voice, he could recognize it from a mile away, well - maybe if he could even hear from a mile away. His falls and scuffs left his ears ringing from time to time.

Slowly, he stepped inside and saw the familiar locks of his Slytherin friend. "What're you doing mucking about in the Trophy Room?" he asked, hinting at amusement. His voice was muffled by the scarf and the hoodie he wore atop of his clothes. He was a good height above her, nothing compared to Quinn though. But he was a little more capable than she was in this situation. "What do you need help with?"

Their friendship wasn't completely solid, but he could safely stand on it and say that he'd talk to her. She had ignored him a few times over in the last few months, but perhaps this third encounter might do their damaged bridge some good. No matter how much his other half told him that his friends might just leave, he couldn't deny that he still wanted to try.

Though his sickness might count his mood off, coming down from a high note to fall flat and monotone. It was close to Christmas, so the holidays were a time where he really didn't want to seem predisposed to winter melancholy. Being alone didn't feel good, the corridors felt a little empty sometimes. Even the common room for the Hufflepuff was a little too quiet. But the hubbub over their two Quidditch victories made up for it.

If human ears could perk up in the same way that dogs could, that would be Alexx right now. At the sound of the familiar voice, though it sounded like it was at its worst, she was completely thrilled that it was Reid Kovacs. She hadn't been the nicest to him, and not in the sense that she had verbally been rude because Alexx could never bring it upon herself to actually hurt Reid in that way, but she hadn't spoken to him very much. In part, she was rather busy, and now that Reid was not a Headliner employee, she wasn't seeing him as much. Plus there was Quidditch, which she imagined they both found to be time-consuming. Practice, common room parties, games, you name it. But there was something else, too. Something that Jeannine had said to Alexx after her birthday party.

Smiling from ear to ear, she greeted her friend cheerfully. "Reid! Bonjour! So good to see you!" Her eyes wrinkled up, and for once, she wasn't faking her enthusiasm about seeing someone. She was thrilled to see Reid. He was the closest thing that she had to a best friend, or perhaps only a very close one, and she was very grateful for that. She decided that trying to befriend people simply because Jeannine would approve was not only hard and tiresome, but entirely boring. With the exception of Maxwell Avery, who was perhaps the coolest pureblood she knew, there was not one pureblood that she didn't already befriend that she would go out of the way to hang out with.

Smiling further, she pointed upwards. "Look, Reid! Christmas decorations!" Sure enough, should his eyes glance above the shorter girl, he would see that she was attempting to wrap the garland around the edges of the display cases. "I've never celebrated Christmas before, I'm not sure if I'm hanging this right... But, I found this box of decorations and... Well, I'm mostly in it for the house points too, but I figured it would be fun. Anyway, could you help me put the garland up? I'm not quite tall enough to reach..." She rambled, hoping he wouldn't think she was being silly. It wasn't often that the young girl was this light-hearted, given that her entire childhood had been nothing but doom and gloom all the time. This was a rare moment, a rare glimpse of Alexx, that was saved for people who she really did enjoy being around.

Christmas, she had heard, was not about the gifts. It was about friends and family, both of which Alexx struggled to have. Most people could at least make friends, but this year proved that Alexx wasn't really cut out for that. People knew her, and they certainly knew of her, but how many of them would she actually fight to keep around? She wasn't even fighting to keep the one person she did feel like spending her time with; Reid Kovacs. He was special for more reasons than one, and Alexx assumed that he wasn't even aware of how that was so. But in truth, there were very little people at this school who Alexx would go out of her way to be kind to. Even whilst she ignored the her Hufflepuff counterpart, she would have never dared to be especially mean to him. Ignoring him was the nicest thing that she could do, and even if her heart was particularly small and perhaps a little damaged, it wasn't nonexistent. She simply did not have it in her to turn her back on him completely. She would always keep him at arm's length at the minimum.

Upon examining her friend closer, she noticed something about him. "You're... Are you sick?" She asked, tilting her head. Alexx hated germs more than she hated Gryffindor students (the exception being Max and Rhea). She couldn't stand the thought of being sick or... Or dirty! One might think it's peculiar that a Quidditch player would be afraid of germs, but that was her life. Lots of baths. Lots of scrubbing. "What are you doing wandering the halls, mon ami? You should be getting rest." That was the mother in her coming out. Of course, Alexx was not a mother, but she had acted as one in place of the deadbeat that she and her siblings were cursed with. Someone needed to take care of them. One of the worst things about Hogwarts was that there were no responsible adults. If there were, things like the masquerade ball would not have happened. That being said, no one was here making sure that these kids were being good to themselves. Clearly, Reid wasn't.

Reid's lips barely peeked from behind the comforting cloth of the scarf, a smile evident as the garland came to his attention. Alexx came as a surprise, he didn't think she'd go around putting up Christmas decorations. That just made the whole thing a little more delightful to see.

At the inquiry of his malady, he scoffed a little at her comment. Sickness be gone, he wasn't going to lay in bed like some bumpkin. On top of that, he was well aware that the other lads in his dormitory could probably get sick if he filled the air with his germs.

"You really think a cold is going to keep me in bed? I think not." There was a clear grin behind his words as he took initiative with the garland decoration. "Caught a cold jus' a few days ago, was eating with the boys when apparently someone was sick. Naturally, here I am with a cold." He stood on something and slowly and carefully put up the showpiece.

"I know there's a cure for this cold, but dad always said that it would make me stronger if I stick it out - or something of the sort." He gave a half hearted shrug at his assumptions, not realizing that his dad's explanation was just a way for him to stop crying over being sick. He was miserable and a bit of a whiny child back then when he got a mere fever.

"I'll be fine, I can't miss practice anyway. I don't really want to slack off at the games." Aye, ever since he joined Quidditch, it had become his lifeblood. He hadn't been so involved in something in a while till he earned his stripes. "Anyway, how do you want this? Here -" Reid moved it to demonstrate. "... Or here?" The student looked over his shoulder to see her reaction and orders.
