The astronomy tower was a godsend, Oakley decided, scribbling on a scroll of parchment. His telescope at home was much weaker than the ones at Hogwarts, and light pollution where muggles lived always decreased the quality of his past studies. Here he was able to study the stars, alone. The astronomy tower was almost empty peered through the lens of the telescope again, noting the relative spaces between the different stars. He added a few more notes in the scroll, along with a sketch of a lesser known constellation, Fornax.
So it went, for several hours. Oakley writing down notes as he gazed at the stars, determined to connect muggle discoveries to the notes of his fellow wizards. He sat in silence, the only sounds were the creaking of the telescope and the scratch of his quill on parchment. This was the plan for the rest of the day, until curfew. Oakley may have had no friends, but he didn't need any. Yet. All he needed this early on in the year was space.
The thump of sneakers on stone sounded up the stairs. He turned towards the noise. Who would come up to the astronomy tower this close to curfew?

Much like Oakley, Jack hadn't expected anyone to be up in the tower at that time. He had intended to see if he could try out flying a broom he had obtained from a 'supply closet' (aka the Room of Requirement) but of course he wouldn't have been able to do so in broad daylight. Trying to get out onto the grounds seemed to have been asking for trouble, so he had thought that getting to some open air from a tower would have been best.

He couldn't have gone to the Owlery with all the owls that would have been in the way. And he didn't have access to the Ravenclaw tower, so that was also a no-go. Still, there was another that he was fairly certain even first-years like him had access to - the astronomy tower. What hadn't occurred to him was that there might have been a student who was actually there to study astronomy.

When he laid eyes on the Ravenclaw boy, he blinked and hid the broom behind his back. "Hi," he greeted with a friendly smile. "Uh...couldn't you see the same stars and stuff from your house's tower? I mean...your whole Common Room and all your dormitories are located in one, right?"

Oakley jumped, startled by the sudden appearance of Jack. He quickly rolled up his sheet of parchment and dropped his pen on the cold, stone floor. He gorped around the the floor for a few awkward minutes, and came up with a set of dark grey lens caps. He turned secured them on either end of the telescope, fumbling with the caps the whole time.
"There are no high magnification, large aperture lens telescope in any of the dorms." Oakley said, still focused on the lens covers. "The telescopes that Hogwarts have invested in are high quality, and I'm just taking advantage of the resources available to me."
"Plus," he added, " my fellow Ravenclaws are very loud, I can never get any work done in there, especially so close to curfew, when all of them are restless and screaming."
He nodded towards the Ravenclaw dorm tower, clearly visible from the astronomy tower.
He finally secured the lens caps onto the telescope. He turned and peered at Jack, taking in the anxious look, sliver badge, and how Jack seemed to be concealing something.
"Speaking of.. why are you here so close to lights out? You don't seem to be the type to spend their time stargazing."

Upon being told about the lack of special 'high magnification, large-aperture lens' telescopes in the Ravenclaw dorms, Jack raised a brow. "Um...couldn't you just move this one, then?" he wanted to know. "Teleport it with a spell or something? Or ask a teacher to?" The Slytherin frowned in thought. "How are you supposed to do your homework for classes like Astronomy if this one telescope is being used and you don't have any others closer to your dorms? Do all the Astronomy students have to share the same one?"

Fiddling with the broom behind his back, the redhead continued to listen to the other boy's reasons. He supposed loud housemates made sense, but the notion still made him snort a bit in amusement. "A bunch of bookworms like you? Loud?" Jack jeered. "I bet your idea of them screaming is whisper-yelling."

The redhead automatically looked over at the Ravenclaw tower once the Ravenclaw boy motioned toward it, but that caused him to turn a little and the broom behind his back became partially exposed. Too late did he realize that the sharp-eyed star-gazer had been watching him.

Furthermore, Jack made it a point not to lie. Twisting the truth, omitting it, telling only some of it, yes...but not lying. He had to be very careful with how he worded things.

"Oh...you know," he murmured, glancing down at his shoes. "Same as you. Practicing lessons outside of class." Looking back up, he continued, "Hey...if I'm here now, won't it be hard for you to concentrate? Because I'm talking to you and all? Probably just best to give up and call it a night, right?"

"We only use the telescopes during class time, our homework is done using our class notes." Oakley tersely responded. His expression soured at the light jab thrown at him.
Oakley picked up his pen and tucked the sheet of parchment away in his schoolbag, which he slunf over his shoulder. He hesitated, then placed the bag back down at the feet of the table. He picked up the pen and tucked it behind his ear, then squinted at Jack, still suspicious of his intentions.
"Sure," he said, pacing back and forth in front of Jack, "but it is getting dark, and curfew is nearly upon us."
Oakley paused in his little speech, and glanced at the clock on the wall. He then reached into his cloak and pulled out a book. He paged through it for a few seconds, then slammed it shut and looked up. "In fact, it's about an hour or so til the professors start patrolling the halls."
He ceased his restless pacing and snapped his fingers. "If you were here for that same reason as me, you wouldn't suggest that I leave, we could both use the telescopes in peace. If you wanted me to leave, you obviously want to do something in private, away from prying eyes.
"So why don't you pull out whatever it is you're hiding, random student?"

"Ohh…" Upon hearing that the telescopes weren’t used for homework, a slow grin crept across the Slytherin’s face. That must have meant the Ravenclaw was just using the telescope for fun, then. Jack watched casually as the other boy appeared to start packing up before seeming to think better of it.

"An hour, huh? That’s not bad. A lot can be done in an hour," the redhead noted, examining his fingernails in a show of indifference. When the other first-year started talking about using the telescopes in peace, he glanced around, not having been aware that there had been more than one present. The others hadn’t been set up or anything, so he must have missed them. "Oh…I thought there was only the one you were using," Jack admitted truthfully. "But you’re right. I never said I was here for the same reason as you."

Well, there didn’t seem to be any help for it now; the cat was already out of the bag. And what was the worst the other boy would do? Tattle on him? Jack shrugged and pulled out the broom from behind him with a sheepish smile.

"I don’t suppose you’d believe me if I said I was here to sweep, would you?"

"What do you mean you're not here for the same reason as I am," Oakley said suspiciously, "There's only astrology equipment up in this tower."
He watched as Jack seemed to think for a while, then shrug to himself and reveal the hidden object.
Watching Jack pull the broom from behind his back, Oakley's eyes widened, his jaw dropped. His hands slapped over his mouth.
He looked to Jack, then to the broom, then back again. His eyes seemed to grow ever wider with every look at the contraband.
After a moment of dismay, Oakley pulled out the book in his cloak yet again. Flipping to the list of banned items, he pointed to the top of the list, which was underlined and highlighted. Several times. As were all of the items on the list.
"First years are not allowed their own broomstick," he quoted. "You are NOT supposed to have that! How did you even get your broomstick into Hogwarts!? This is a highly prestigious school with a strong security system!" Oakley threw out his hands in his righteousness anger, flailing his book around. He glared at Jack, tapping his foot on the floor, impatiently waiting for his response.

The Ravenclaw's growing reaction was priceless and for that alone, Jack decided he hadn't minded running into the other boy. When he saw the other young man pull out a book from under his cloak, however, he raised a brow. "Um...what is that?" he asked, wondering why the brunet carried around a book containing a list of underlined and highlighted banned items. "Do you just...go around carrying that thing with you everywhere? Isn't that heavy?" Was this kid some major stickler for the rules? Maybe he was some wannabe prefect, like Oliver.

"Who said it was mine?" Jack asked, appearing unphased at his peer's outburst. "I found it in a supply closet in the castle. What's the harm in having a broom?" Looking at the thing now, though, he did wonder about its capabilities of flight. Could a witch or wizard ride on any broom, or did it have to be some special, magical one? What constituted as a broom, anyhow? Did a mop work? Or a rake?

The more he thought about it, the more the redhead decided that perhaps a really high tower wasn't the best place to test out whether or not some random broom he had found could fly him around. He was barely getting the hang of using the school's Shooting Stars. What made him think he could work this one, especially without adult supervision or instructions to tell him how?

With an obnoxious smile, the Slytherin nodded in agreement. "You're right," he said. "I probably shouldn't have this. Why don't we trade?" In one swift motion, Jack attempted to put the broomstick in the Ravenclaw's free hand and to grab the book from him with his other.

"It's not that heavy," Oakley muttered, slamming the book shut. It was just a small book of rules. There weren't even that many rules at Hogwarts in the first place.
"Who said it was mine? I found it in a supply closet in the castle. What's the harm in having a broom?" The guy said. He has beginning to dislike this boy more and more. "The harm of having a broom is that you may injure yourself! This school of witchcraft and wizardry has placed specific and sparse rules that help students avoid injury! The whole point of that rule is so inexperienced first years don't get hurt because they jump off of the tallest tower in the castle to test out whatever rickety broom they have in their possession!" Oakley hissed out in one breath. The Slytherin didn't seem to be listening. Why was he even going through all of this trouble? He barely knew this guy. It might be easier to just leave him be. If he got gravely injured, it was his own fault, no one else's. Plus, the dum idiot could just get healed b-
He flinched as his rule book was snatched from his grasp, the contraband broom thrust into his arms in lieu of his stolen guide.
Dumbfounded, he blinked a few times before regaining his senses. He then looked at the broomstick in his hands, Jack standing awkwardly to the side. the now scruffy book held loosely in his hands.

"What is it, then? A rulebook? I don't see a prefect badge on your robes. Do just carry this around to make sure you don't accidentally do something you might get in trouble for?" Jack wanted to know, paging through the book. "Or do you just enjoy policing other students?" he asked with a grin.

"Where do you even get a book like this? Did you buy it from somewhere? Steal it out of the school's caretaker's office? Or maybe from a teacher or the library?" Tilting his head, he commented, "I doubt you'd be able to buy this sort of thing at a bookstore. This is amazing. If these are really supposed to be the official rules, you could find any number of loopholes and back doors and whatever else..." His mind boggled with the possibilities.

As the Ravenclaw boy launched into a tirade about the dangers of a broom, Jack watched him for a minute. Then he laughed. "If you're going to try to fly with it, yeah," he chuckled. "But did you ever think that maybe I was just going to sweep with it?" He tapped his temples meaningfully, giving the other boy a wink, before heading back toward the door to go inside.

"Anyway, have fun with the broom and thanks for the book. Nice trading with you."
