As Victoria walked toward the line, she could hear the rush of her own heartbeat in her ears, each pulse loud enough to drown out the chatter of the campgrounds. The late afternoon sun was beating down, its heat sticking to her skin, and somewhere in the distance, the sound of waves against the lake mingled with bursts of laughter from other campers. Summer camp was drawing to a close — but that wasn’t what had her on edge.

The brunette girl had, somewhat impulsively, signed up for some sort of blind-date-in-a-tunnel event. The name alone sounded strange, like something dreamed up by overly enthusiastic people desperate to squeeze in one last memorable activity. Ironically, she wasn’t even entirely sure what the rules were. She’d just figured it might be fun — a harmless, silly way to end the week. But the moment her eyes landed on the long, slow-moving line stretching toward the dark entrance of the tunnel, that confidence began to wither.

A quiet sigh slipped from her lips as she shifted her weight from one foot to the other. She tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear, a small habit she always fell into when she needed to anchor herself. On the outside, she tried to appear composed — relaxed, even. But on the inside, her mind was a mess of spiraling questions and imagined disasters. What if we had nothing to talk about? What if I said something stupid? What if this ended up being the one thing that ruined an otherwise perfect summer?

The line moved forward.

The air inside the waiting area was warmer now, charged with the nervous energy of other campers. She could hear snippets of whispered conversations and quick bursts of giggles. Her stomach tightened.

When her turn finally came, Victoria lifted her head. The sun caught her square in the face, sharp and unyielding, and she instinctively narrowed her eyes against the glare. For a moment, her expression must have looked tense — but she quickly smoothed it over, unwilling to let her first impression be mistaken for irritation.

Her gaze settled on the boy standing across from her. He had short, slightly curly black hair that caught the light in soft waves, and his dark eyes held an unmistakable glint of curiosity, like he was quietly trying to figure her out. Something about him was faintly familiar; she was almost certain they shared a couple of classes, though his name hovered just out of reach in her mind.

She tilted her head ever so slightly, as if the shift in angle might shake the memory loose. Instead, she found herself caught for a brief moment in the stillness between them — the distant shouts, the hum of the crowd, the faint rustle of leaves — all of it fading into the background.

“…Uh… hey,” she murmured at last, her voice soft but steady, just loud enough for him to hear over the summer air.

Derek shifted uneasily on his feet, trying to keep his nerves in check. The line was moving at a crawl, and he could feel the heat of the sun beating down on his back, making his skin feel sticky and uncomfortable. His palms were clammy, and he kept glancing at the tunnel entrance, as if it might somehow tell him what to expect. The silence around him was thick—full of anticipation, but also of unspoken doubts, and he couldn’t help but feel the weight of it pressing on his chest.

He kept adjusting his stance, shifting from one foot to the other, as if that might somehow make him less jittery. His mind was racing—what was he even supposed to say? Would she be nervous too? Would she find him awkward? The questions looped through his head, each one more anxious than the last. He tried to breathe evenly, but it was difficult with the sudden rush of adrenaline making his pulse pound loudly in his ears. It was like standing at the edge of something unknown, a little scared but also strangely excited.

His eyes flicked over the girl standing beside him—a girl he’d never spoken to before, but somehow felt familiar. She was quiet, her face tense with concentration and uncertainty. Her hair was dark, slightly messy from the heat, and she kept tugging at a loose strand, a nervous habit Derek recognized all too well in himself. He wondered if she was just as scared as he was, or if she was better at hiding it. Her eyes kept darting around, taking in the campgrounds, the distant lake, and then settling back on the tunnel. She looked like she was trying to stay composed, just like him.

The line moved again, slowly, inching them closer to the dark mouth of the tunnel. Derek forced himself to stay still, to keep his breathing even, even as a thousand butterflies fluttered inside his stomach. The tension was almost tangible now, crackling in the air like static. He could hear the faint sounds of campers chatting and laughing nearby, but it all seemed distant—like noise from another world, as if he was trapped inside his own head.

He caught a glimpse of her looking at him, and he quickly looked away, cheeks flushing slightly. Did she think he was weird? Did she notice how shaky his hands felt? His mind raced with doubts, but he also felt a strange flicker of hope—maybe she was just as nervous, maybe they were in this together.

When her turn finally came, Derek took a deep breath, trying to steady himself. His heart was hammering against his ribcage, loud and relentless. The sunlight hit his face, making him squint, and he felt the tension mounting as he prepared to step forward. For a moment, he hesitated, caught between his nerves and a strange, quiet anticipation.

And then, she spoke, softly, almost shyly.

“Uh… hey,” she murmured.

Derek blinked, caught off guard by the simple greeting. He looked up again, meeting her eyes, and managed a small smile. “Hey,” he replied, voice steadier than he felt.
"Hi,"Derek said shakily. "So, since it appears we're blind dates, let's go in?"

Victoria felt a subtle loosening in her chest at the sight of the boy’s smile. At the very least, he didn’t look disappointed that she was the one he’d been paired with for this curious “blind date.” That was something of a relief. With a gentle nod in answer to his earlier question, the brunette girl lowered herself carefully into the gondola, smoothing her skirt beneath her as if the simple act required all her concentration. She waited in silence for him to follow, only to find her restless fingers betraying her nerves—fidgeting lightly with the hem of her dress.

Starting conversations had never been one of Blythe girl’s talents. If anything, it was the very opposite. Her words always seemed to come a little too late, a little too thoughtful, like stepping onto thin ice and waiting for the crack.

“...Uhm, I’m Victoria,” she said at last. Her voice, though touched by unease, remained calm and even, never sharp or high-pitched, just enough to carry across the space between them.

If she admitted the truth—to herself, at least—Victoria barely knew this boy at all. That thought alone was enough to keep her heartbeat quickened, but not enough to quell her genuine desire to know him. He struck her as the kind of person worth knowing. For a few quiet seconds, she studied him with cautious curiosity: the disarray of his black hair, already tousled further by the drifting breeze, lent him a kind of cool vibe she could never quite muster for herself.

The gondola drifted further along, slipping into the tunnel, where the dimness gave way to a chamber alive with decoration. Blooms of soft-colored flowers hung like ornaments, their pale petals catching what light there was, and for the first time Victoria felt the weight in her chest ease. A pink blossom, loosened from its stem, fluttered downward, snagging briefly in her brown hair before she brushed it free with careful fingers.

When she glanced back at him, her eyes caught on his attire. It was… unusual. Not odd in the mocking sense, but distinctly different, set apart. His clothing carried an almost Greek sensibility, draped in a style that felt far more mythic than modern. And he wore it without the slightest hint of self-consciousness. Victoria found herself quietly admiring that—the way he seemed so at ease, unbothered by what anyone else might think.

Her voice, when it came again, was soft and unassuming, edged with curiosity rather than judgment.
“...Do you like Greek mythology?” she asked gently, tilting her head ever so slightly. It wasn’t a test, not a challenge, just an opening—an honest invitation into a conversation she hoped might stretch into something more sincere.

Derek’s eyes wandered around the chamber, taking in the branches of flowers hanging from the ceiling—soft pinks, lazy blues, and blooming whites that seemed to shimmer in the dim light. The gentle sway of the petals and the faint scent of blossoms made the space feel like a secret garden from a myth.

He took a slow breath, feeling the quiet awe settle over him. The place was almost magical, like they’d stepped into a storybook. His gaze returned to Victoria, watching her brush a loose blossom from her hair, her face softly lit by the glow of the flowers.

When she asked about Greek mythology, Derek had nodded subtly, a small, genuine smile touching his lips. He didn’t need many words. The stories—full of gods, monsters, and heroes—had always captivated him. They felt alive, like they still whispered secrets waiting to be uncovered.

He looked around again, then back at her, feeling a quiet sense of connection. Sometimes, he thought, the chaos in those stories was just a reflection of life itself—messy but full of hope. That thought lingered in his mind as he watched her, hoping she could sense the unspoken understanding between them.

"Yes, I do like Greek Mythology. It's because how vivid the storytellers recite the stories, making them come true." He said all that fastly, as if they were pulled out of his mind.

He looked at Victoria, amd noticed she was shy. We're both shy, I guess, Derek thought. He hoped that Victoria could become one of Derek's few friends at Hogwarts.
