Nothing More Fun That Being Knocked Unconcious
StartLast year's duelling had gone, well, awful for Avis, to put it lightly. Not only had she lost, but she had actually been knocked unconscious and embarrassed. It wasn't necessarily that she was embarresed that she had lost, nor that she had been knocked unconcious. Rather, Avis was embarressed that her team might have lost because her spells didn't hit. Because Avis' aim was poor or her oponent was quicker than her. And that was nonsense.

After a long summer of rethinking through all her duels, Avis decided that she had found the solution to her problem: watch more duels. Try to figure out the best stratagies, the best ways to figure out the opponents next move, the best way to corner them in some high profile 4D chess. A chess game that if were real, would probably be awfully similar to wizards chess, with the added element of the pieces destroying each other. Avis was going to examine the inner workings of duelling until she could exploit the heck out of them.
The only difficulty with her plan was there there were only around 6 duelling days a year, 3 of which she would be in. This led to Plan B: Unofficial Duels. Quite often, a few students felt like slinging painful bolts of light at each other, and they were constantly looking for someone to referee the games. There wasn't much more of a front row seat than one could get than refereeing the game.
So here Avis was, starting her hopefully long and educational career as a amatuer duelling referee. She looked back and forth between the two opponents. "Ready?" She stepped back off the piste, although she was still probably closer than she should have been. "Let's just not kill anyone. Set, Go!"

@Demitra Aragon
Edith took a deep breath. This was her first ever duel that she had ever done. How would this end? Was she going to triumph over her opponent? That seemed unlikely. Or was she going to end unconscious on the floor? That was more likely. Edith took a gulp. The thought made her shiver. You're a second year, remember, she told herself. You could win a little first year any time you like. But the thought didn't comfort her. Edith bit her lip hard.
She tightened her hairband and nervously twirled her wand in her fingers, staring at her opponent. It was none other than Demitra Aragon, the pretty girl with brown hair that Edith was secretly a bit scared of. Edith shivered, glaring in her opponent's eyes. She took a step forward. You're going to win this duel, whatever happens, she told herself firmly. She glared into Demitra's dark green eyes, and considered what to do for a moment.
Think of how proud Holly will be, Edith thought, trying to calm herself. She looked around the piste. It was empty apart from them, and Edith imagined her long-dead parents cheering her on. Strength surged through her veins, and she knew that she had to win this, or she would be shamed for life. Eventually, she came to a decision.

Demitra somehow ended up in the dueling room, exactly two days after meeting the snub second-year Ravenclaw. She twirled her wand in her hand, feigning innocence. It was a good wand; aspen wood and dragon heartstring. Her mother had dragon heartstring - it must have been a family thing. She looked up to the moderator, a Ravenclaw Duelist. She gave a nod to acknowledge her, before looking into Edith's eyes.
She instantly raised her eyebrows. Edith was glaring, seemingly nervous as she twirled a wand in her fingers. Demitra didn't take the bait, staring at her calmly. Demitra thought back to her grandmother.
Demitra's grandmother was a duelist in her time here - and the countless stories Demitra heard as a kid of dueling was something she remembered clearly. If she had a galleon for every time her grandmother told her stories of any kind, magic and non-magic, she'd be swimming in a mansion by now. Until then, she had her first duel to focus on.
It was the first time she had entered the room with the mindset to actually duel and win. Perhaps it was the first of many; it was certainly something she was interested in doing, particularly as a sport.
Demitra positioned herself, and as Avis said "go" she instantly knew what to do.

Avis had barely even finished her words before the two stoic duellists had spoke their first spells. She jumped back a step, surprised, a new sort of appreciation growing for the moderators in her duels who not only needed to stand just meters away from two spells being flung, but six. It was a wonder they all made in through the duel intact, especially in the younger groups, who weren't quite so great at aiming yet.
Demitra was quite forethcoming with her first spell, a classic Tarantellega, and Avis was sure it would have done quite a bit of damage - if it even got out of her wand. She had to squint in order to see the tiny sparks barely flying out of the end of the wand, fizzling out sadly before it could even be called a spell. Avis winced in pity for the girl's unfortunate start to the duel, it really was only the first round, and there were many more to go.
Edith's spell, on the other hand, came flying out of her wand, and despite Demitra's valient effort at dodging, flew into her opponent. Demitra would find her tongue in fact tied, unable to speak incantations, nor trash talk her opponent.OOC info:Reducio

That round was disgusting. Demitra had been confident in her spells; she cursed herself mentally for not spending even more time studying and preparing (although she did spend more on average).
She had raised her wand, but a feeble attempt was made. It had a few sparks, before it was dimmed immediately, and by the time she wanted to do something else, Edith's spell hit her like a truck. Thankfully, she wasn't harmed, but she was tongue-tied and couldn't speak.
Demitra had tried to dodge; she really did. She attempted to leap to the side, but unfortunately that was not successful. She felt herself getting angry at the pitiful efforts in her duel. She paced a little, before looking into Edith's eye. If that girl thought she could do a little bit of damage, she was wrong.
This round, she had to do better. She thought of her grandmother; this was never part of the stories she had been told. Demitra tried not to fret - this was the first round only. And she would be able to talk in a matter of minutes.
She threw Edith a poisonous look.
She repositioned herself, determined to make a better comeback that whatever last round was.

So far, so good, Edith thought, looking at Demitra. She had hit a spell, and, luckily, she had not missed. All she had to do now was hope for more good luck...
She steadied herself, readying for her next move. Demitra gave her an annoyed look. Edith was glad that her spell had worked, for she wasn't very good at casting and that also meant that Demitra couldn't cast a spell on her. Even with that thought, Demitra's stare made her shiver. Edith could see her parents, more clearly now, cheering her on, standing a few metres away from her, glowing in a pearly white ghost color... even though they were long dead. She took a deep breath and exhaled.
You can do this, she tried telling herself, but then adjusted it in her head. You have to do this. That wasn't a very comforting though, but Edith gritted her teeth. She was going to win this, or else. And, luckily, she was already one step further. Edith steeled herself, hoping that this time luck was going to chance by again, for she needed it very much.
Taking a step forward, Edith's mind raced on what to do, and eventually she came up with an idea...

Demitra is currently tongue tied, and cannot speak to cast her spell. No spell is cast. Nothing Happens
Both girls seemed to immediately shake off the first round, planning their second rounds and outflinging their wands towards the other.
This worked out wonderfully for Edith, whose spell was cast beautifully. Avis had to squint to see through the green sparks that flew across the piste toward her younger opponent, landing full in her face, and Avis winced. She had been on the receiving end of those sparks many a time, and there was almost nothing worse in a duel than feeling so out of control, unable to see anything.
Unfortunately, Demitra's strategy didn't serve her quite so well. It was a good wand movement, and Demitra mouthed the words in a way that Avis was sure it would have been a wonderful spell if Demitra had been able to actually speak the words. A valiant effort by the first year, Avis had to admit, but the first year had probably just learned the spells, much less how to do it non-verbal, and probably wouldn't for quite a while. No spell shot out, and Edith didn't even need to move. Avis looked between the two girls, confused for a moment, but then shrugged, allowing them to duke it out. While two rounds had gone by, neither girl had been damaged yet at all.OOC info:Reducio

@Demitra Aragon and @Avis Marlong
Edith breathed a sigh of relief, although she knew this was only the beginning. She was more determined now, but still shaking with nerves.
Her second spell had gone pretty well, Edith recalled. She had tried the Green Sparks Charm, a pretty simple one, but it had worked well. Demitra had tried to cast a spell at her, but it had not worked as she was tongue-tied.
Edith was still nervous, because her first spell was wearing off now, and she was sure that Demitra was a good spell caster, when she had the chance. Edith didn't know exactly what to do as her next move, for this time Demitra would surely attack... and more successfully than last time.
Edith looked Demitra in her deep turquoise-green eyes, and she remembered how once she had tried to duel a girl when she was about 5 or 7, in the school her foster mother payed for her, though obviously without magic.
The girl had been much larger than Edith, and older, and Edith had to admit it was not her proudest moment. She had left with a very strong bruise on her right knee and left arm. it had taken her a week to heal, and Edith told herself firmly, No more duels.
And yet here she was. Though the odds were looking better, Edith still didn't forget last time. And this time she was going to win. She had to.

Avis sighed. As excited as she had been to moderate this duel, neither girl had been damaged in the slightest. Not that she was looking for people to get hurt, or anything like that, but it was duelling. Duelling wouldn't be duelling if one or two people didn't end up on the ground unconcious by the end.
She glared daggers at both girls, trying to telepathically tell them to get on with the duel. A nice flipendo, or maybe an incendio, would do them both well. Flames were always fun to watch. Or, one of them, well, in any case. Thankfully, Edith decided to cast a spell. The Tongue Tying spell. Which was great and all, but either way wasn't going to cause any damage.
Whether or not it would cause damage, however, wasn't even relevant, as Demitra slipped out of grasp of the spell so quickly that Avis hadn't even seen her move. She then proceeded to...just stand there. Avis waited a beat, looking for Demitra to do something, but the girl seemed to be so incredibly stunned by the spell the round before that she simply stood there. Avis pursed her lips for a moment, then shrugged and allowed the duel to continue, tapping her foot impatiently as she waited for something exciting to happen.OOC info:Reducio

Edith looked around quickly, and started fiddling with her fingers, which she always did when she was a bit nervous. She's just a first year. Edith told herself, but it didn't help much.
Demitra had dodged Edith's last spell, so it had no effect whatsoever. Edith sighed. Things seemed to be going downhill. She was sure that soon enough Demitra would cast a spell at her, and she would be unable to defend herself. Edith stiffled a yawn in spite of herself and stretched her arm, thinking about what to do next.
If Edith won this duel... Holly would be so proud. And Ellie, her foster mother. But most of all, Edith herself would be very proud to win her first ever duel, so she took a deep breath. Very soon this will be over, she told herself, and you'll be able to go and rest... in defeat or in victory. Edith steeled herself, her brain trying to catch up with her energy left.
What should I do? Will Demitra cast a spell... or dodge? she asked herself, but obviously got no answer. Think, she begged herself. Finally, she gulped down the remnants of her fear and decided what to do.
