Mahlioz was running out into the grounds. If anyone who knew them relatively well was seeing this, their jaws would have dropped. Mahlioz didn't do running. Especially not outside when it was humid and mucky and February (objectively the worst month). But Mahlioz's heart was beating and her mind was speeding too fast for any of it to make a difference. It was February 27th, she was on the grounds, and she was going to do animagus training.

What this entailed exactly, the third year did not know. The one and only bird boy had sent her an owl a few days ago, suggesting they meet up. They hung out from time to time normally, but this time, Pericles had something planned. Last year, he had proposed to help her with her goal to become an animagus, inviting her on a trip with his League and answering quite a few, if not too many, of her questions.

Though many things had come up in between since then - for gods' sake, she had moved and he had lost an eye - he seemed just as keen as her to keep going with their plans. Mahlioz was very glad about this. He was, they were pretty sure, the coolest person they had ever met, and he was willing to help them turn into an animal someday.

The owl Pericles had sent had suggested the location to be the Hogwarts grounds where they had first met and the date to be the 27th of February. Mahlioz was there now, no longer running but stopped and panting for breath, finally remembering why it was that they didn't do running. She had come straight from her last class, not even going by her dorms, and still had her bag on with all of her work inside. Bird boy hadn't specified what exactly it was they would be doing, other than that it had to do with animagus stuff, but that was enough for Mahlioz to be excited out of her mind.

Right, they were early. It was a little silly not to have gone by the dorms, they were now realizing - they had had the time and their bag was a bit cumbersome. But no matter, their backpack always made them feel more at ease. They couldn't keep the grin off their face. Pericles had said once that you had to be confident, sure that you wanted to know yourself, if you wanted to become an animagus, and Mahlioz felt like she was closer to that than she had been in a long time. With recent developments - gender stuff, hanging out with old friends for the first time in a while, meeting people who made them feel better about losing their old home - they felt like they could be okay again. That they were a little closer to being happy, to knowing themselves.

Today was going to be better than okay, though. She couldn't help but fidget with excitement as she waited for her upperclassman to show up and reveal what he had planned.

Consistency was a rare and precious commodity in the tumultuous lives of wix folk. Many started school clubs in pursuit of it, which doubled as distraction from the doom, gloom, and chaos around Hogwarts. It was in part why Pear launched the League in the first place, to lure like-minded souls down the same path, chasing a shared dream. This effort proved ambitious for the reclusive Ravenclaw, whose focus on the broad collective had since been boiled down to one protege: Mahlioz. The pair had endured drastic changes since their chance introduction, yet they seldom spoke about their personal lives. They seemed to prefer keeping their minds too occupied to leave room for troubles. As far as Pericles was concerned, between he and Mahl, the distraction was a mutual benefit.

Beneath the timidity holding the Slytherin back shined a glow of ambition. Pear fondly remembered their fascination for the old animagi ruins, enjoyed their inquisitive theories, and admired Mahl's zeal most of all. He couldn't think of a finer way to spend a Thursday afternoon than conducting dubious experiments with a fellow kook. Mahl was asked to meet him along a path between the Herbology greenhouses and Flying lawn. The spot was secluded enough from central walkways to avoid nosy onlookers, but near enough to get aid on the very slim, but very reasonable concern that their exercise went wrong. Pericles was in high spirits as he made his way from CoMC towards the grounds. The bird had transfigured and taken flight with the intent of arriving early, ten minutes or so, as he imagined an instructor ought to. It was unsurprising to see the Slytherin already waiting, panting and jittery with excitement.

Swooping downward with a tilt of its wings, the eagle was briefly obscured by a blur of feathers before the boy took its place, landing with a soft thud of boots on cobblestone. Pear was shouldering a bookbag and still in his class robes, sporting the same sleepy smile as usual. "Hullo Mahl." There was an earnest ring of cheer in his voice despite its subdued volume. One silvery eye met her while its glass and gold twin swiveled in the socket, seemingly scanning her before leveling. "Thank you for meeting me before dinner. What I have planned is better on an empty stomach, but I hope you aren't too hungry." Business as usual. He was already drawing his wand from his sleeve, as though they two had simply gone from one class to another.

Pericles arrived in eagle form, of course, which gave Mahlioz yet another opportunity to watch him transform. Every time, it looked like something out of a movie. She'd seen so much magic throughout her life, but there was nothing that quite rivalled seeing a human turn out of a bird. Peri clearly loved flying, and the third year wondered what it would be like if they ended up getting a flying animagus too. It would be... rather unfortunate, considering their intense phobia of heights. But perhaps it would be a different feeling from being on a broom. Maybe they would like it.

They still hoped they got something else, though. Just in case.

They'd heard the bird boy had dropped out of Duelling and started Broom Racing. They would have to ask him about that later. Perhaps the whole bird thing had encouraged him to spend even more time in the air (which she couldn't understand). For now, she responded to his greeting with a "Hi!" of her own, trying to stop her excited fiddling. Mysterious as ever, he still wasn't telling her exactly what it was he had planned. "No, I'm good," she replied to his mention of an empty stomach - she was too eager to be hungry. "What are we doing?" He had his bag with him, and Mahlioz had been sort of expecting them to look over notes again or read an animagus book of some sort, but he was taking out his wand.

Thoughts immediately flooded their mind. For a second they were worried he planned to do the animagus ritual right then and there, before remembering that was a spell they needed to do, not him, obviously, and it had a million steps beforehand. On top of that, they had to wait a couple years before then. Two years - not even. That was a little insane to think about.

Hyltwis would have graduated - wait, Pericles would have graduated. He wouldn't be at school when she became an animagus. It hit her all at once that he was a sixth year now, that they didn't have all that much time left. What would he be doing during her ritual? Would he want to come, despite not being a student anymore? She had no idea what his goals were at all, now that she thought about it - she had to stop thinking about it, though, they were doing something else. Why was it that her mind was always racing at the wrong moments?

She hoped an empty mind wasn't as necessary as an empty stomach, because she was pretty sure Peri knew as well as she did that that would be impossible for the Slytherin.

Mahlioz and Pericles got on like falling leaves and an autumn breeze. She was always eager to dance ahead, moving and changing, while he inconspicuously gave her a little boost now and again. He relished seeing them soar, and wasn't worried in the slightest about their ability to float on fine without him. Yet their time together was running out. The realization was the push Pericles needed to elevate their practice, and evidently, they were due to take an especially wide step forward.

It was a secret game of his- being mysterious and obscure, then counting until Mahl caved and asked for the plan outright. Today they had managed a record nine seconds. Smiling slyly, Pear shrugged off his satchel and crouched, rifling through it on the grass. "Human transfiguration. Accio Liber Animagi." From deep in the confines of his magically expanded bag, a familiar book of hand-written animagus facts wormed its way towards the surface. "Last time, we talked about permanent partial shifts." This had mostly involved looking over grisly images of half-human half-animal beings whose rituals had failed. "When one panics and rejects their animal form, they ruin the transformation process. It's a challenge to keep one's wits when seeing your body change for the first time. With a little practice, we should be able to harden you against the shock."

Sitting on his heels, Pericles pried the chaotic notebook open to a ribbon-marked section. Between the pages of the last chapter was a meticulously lined page. "On the off chance that your family doesn't take kindly to me turning you into a duck, I've taken the liberty of creating a contract. Not that I would expect a lawsuit from the Evethisawes, mind, but my da would hold it against me if I didn't take the precaution." There was no fine print to comb through, only a standard I hereby volunteer to participate in Pericles Dralt's performance of the following transformations: followed by a list of spells besides boxes to be checked, and a line where one would scrawl their signature. "What do you say to starting with... three?"

Alright, fine, Mahlioz could admit that she had zero patience, which Pericles clearly noticed, according to his smile. But who could blame her? This was animagus training she had been excited about for days, with a sixth year she found ridiculously cool. Of course she couldn't wait to know what they were doing. The bird boy could save his elegant mysteriousness for later. (Hopefully. There was a chance it was just ingrained in him.)

It took a few seconds for his words to register, as he summoned his book from his bag. Human transfiguration - they had learned about that, before the winter break. They remembered the lesson rather vividly, considering it had involved animagi, which had really become something of a hyperfixation. They weren't entirely sure where Pericles was going with it, though - perhaps it would help with the eventual Amato Animo Animato Animagus spell, but they didn't know any of those spells yet. Listening with intent and trying to figure out what he could possibly mean, it wasn't until he put it rather plainly - "turning you into a duck" - that she understood.

"Oh," Mahlioz said, eyes lighting up. "Oh my gods." How they hadn't thought of this as an option was astounding. More astounding was the literal contract Pericles had made - honestly, with the way Hogwarts as an institution worked, Mahlioz wasn't sure lawsuits even existed in the wizarding world. Kids went through much worse than a little human transfiguration. But it felt very Peri-like, organized.
The list of spells the third year remembered from their lesson was there, but they saw it through quite a different lens now that they were conscious they would be able to become one of these. Not in two years, not after a ritual. Today. Right now. Temporarily. Words evaded them for a good few moments after Pericles had finished speaking.

"Three sounds good," she managed to say. "...I actually... really like the idea of a duck, like you said." She let out a laugh - perhaps it was just because she wanted to know what it was like to fly, the way he'd so beautifully put it that first time they met. His it changes everything was a big part of the reason she so wanted this.

Scanning the other spells written down, they considered. "And maybe human to ferret? Furritas? It might help me understand why my dormmates' ferrets are so keen on trying to eat my bunny." But there were so many interesting options to choose from. Being a bat sounded awesome (batman time), as did a badger (she could unleash her inner Hufflepuff). "How about... porcus?" They paused, suddenly struck by a thought. "Hey, do you think these are possible to... cast on yourself?"

Realizing how it sounded, the Slytherin immediately corrected themselves. "Not that - not that I don't want you to cast them on me, obviously I don't even know them yet, and in any case you're more experienced, but I was just thinking. Um. Well, I guess I wasn't really thinking, actually - we're not allowed to cast spells at home during the summer, are we." The question was rhetorical - it was almost funny how she had forgotten for a moment, considering what the rule had meant for her last summer with Reltyl. But turning into animals could have been such a perfect way to escape. She had no idea what was waiting for her when she went back to France next summer, and the skill of magicking herself into a ferret and sneaking away was ever so appealing. But of course it wasn't realistic. Of course she'd still have to face reality.

"Sorry, I'm rambling - I'll sign the contract. Thank you." Clearly the nerves were getting to them; rambling like this wasn't a great sign. At least becoming an animal would shut them up, hopefully. The lack of fine print was reassuring, and Mahlioz checked off the spells they had chosen before signing the paper and handing it back to the bird boy. "Seriously, thank you, this is such a cool idea."

Satisfaction shone in Pear's good eye as Mahl scrawled her signature. They thanked him not once, but twice, summoning an endearing smile as he asserted "Thank you for letting me practice." The smile flickered, then Pear made a point to tack on: "Not that I'm lacking proficiency. This will very probably go fine." Magical theory was a passion shared between them. They were willing to take risks, ask questions, and exchange insights on even the most obscure arcane theories. Where the Ravenclaw was concerned, Transfiguration was a key interest, and this branch's complexities called for thorough explanation. Their study sessions marked the most he ever spoke at once.

"You could, hypothetically, self-transfigure. Only unless you took the precaution of designating someone to reverse the spell, you would find yourself trapped in animal form. Consider Kennilworthy Whisp's take on the Human to Bat spell: he described it as a means for a wix to fly without a broom, yet posed this bat would lack the memory of where the caster was trying to go. 'A human who is forcibly transfigured into a creature, especially one with unreliable willpower, will lose their human mind and begin to think like the animal.' If our experiment goes correctly, this oughtn't be a factor. Not only are you a willing participant, whose psyche isn't battling the transformation, but my intent as the spellcaster is for you to keep your cognizance. Should you experience a lapse in control-" Pear waggled his wand like a fix-all tool "-I'll be right here to reverse it." It was a promising exercise, so long as one didn't overthink the brevity of that "if".

Pericles went on to elaborate: "An animagi retains their human intelligence throughout their transformation, though there can be rare exceptions. One can lose themselves during the initial ritual. I once attended an animagi turning in which I spent hours chasing my friend through a forest, waiting for them to remember they weren't a natural part of it. With our practice, my hope is to acclimate your mind so that when your ritual comes, it will be hardened against the overwhelm. We can train you to experience transfigurement without being consumed by it. This will call for a clear mind between us both." He hesitated, allowing Mahl a moment to decide whether or not right-this-second was a good time for this particular session. "As far as 'practicing' over the summer, you could, hypothetically, get away with it so long as there are adult magic users in your household. Are there...?" The last detail he'd gleaned of Mahlioz's parents was their investment in a convoluted muggle game, which had to do with pretending to be mages.

Pericles didn't seem to mind Mahlioz's bit of a rant - and of course he didn't, he was just as interested in the intricacies of theoretical spell casting as she was, if for a different reason this time around. Right, so if she ever tried to transfigure herself, she would need someone else to keep watch just in case she lost her mind and got stuck there. Not very reassuring, nor helpful for their goal of independence in the first place. But it did give them even more proof that this was going to work if the bird boy was here. If he was pulling out quotes and sources from the top of his head, he definitely knew what to do if anything went wrong.

"Hours?" Mahlioz could barely imagine chasing their friend for two minutes, let alone hours. Though if it was a particularly good friend, and especially if they were in danger of losing themselves to the wilderness... "I hope you were an animagus already, I think I would die if I ran that long as a human." (Then again, she was definitely not the most athletic person she knew.) She continued to nod in acknowledgement as Pericles described why exactly they were doing this experiment, until he got to the clear mind part.

Mahlioz winced, then hoped he hadn't noticed. No, it was fine, it was going to be fine. They could clear their mind for long enough to do this, something they had always dreamed of. It was fine. They weren't about to let stupid France and stupid Reltyl distract them from this, of all things. She nearly missed Pericles' next few words, surprised it was actually allowed to cast spells outside of school if one was underage.

"Er- well, yes, but. It's not like she would let me, I don't think - and anyway, my house is full of Muggle technology, I would have to go somewhere else. And my sibling would kill me if they ever found out. I was only thinking that it might be cool to disappear for a while during the summer, I suppose, not have to be around them all the time. Gods, that's a horrible thing to say, isn't it?" Was this evidence of their mind very obviously not being clear? They hoped not.

"Let me rephrase, um. We moved to France last year, and it has not been easy at all, and my sibling doesn't like me anymore because for some reason all magic is evil if I'm allowed to do it, so I was thinking I might be able to escape from it all as an animal. That's not the reason why I wanted to be a full-on animagus, though, that was before this, it just - came to mind, right now. Anyway!!" Merlin, here they were again, talking Pericles' ear off about themselves after a very simple question. It was always around the people Mahlioz looked up to the most that she floundered when it came to being socially acceptable. The worst part was that she had no idea how to change the subject and she was too deep in it now, really. And all that after she had been so happy earlier on; why did she keep doing this to herself?

"Uhm - you said to keep my mind clear, and to try to retain a good sense of self, right? Is there anything else I should keep in mind, or shall we... get started?" Ah yes. She was such an expert at getting out of embarrassing situations.

The mere mention of the animagi ritual he'd attended was enough to broaden Peri' grin. His eye shone with a blend of sentiment and suppressed laughter, the latter of which rang in his murmur while he recounted: "Luckily, I was. Fortunate for both of us that an eagle can keep up with a cougar. To tell you the truth, she nearly lost me more than once, and I was almost as concerned for the other creatures in the forest as I was her." He wouldn't oust @Evelynn Decipio by name, though couldn't resist divulging the experience. It had certainly served as a night romp to remember.

The topic took a turn for the personal on Mahlioz's end, and although Pear maintained his trademark neutrality, an unwavering stare betrayed his intrigue. It wasn't often that they two delved into their home lives, preferable as it was to lose themselves in study or practice. He wouldn't squander the chance to study his friend for a change. From what little she divulged, he surmised mom must be the magic user of the house. He encouraged her on with his silence, emanating apprehension and intrigue with equal measure. At first, he assumed Mahl's sibling would "kill" them for breaking the underage magic rule, only as she continued, he started to suspect that wasn't the case. When they went on to confess they hoped to avoid their sibling, concern began to win out. "Gods, that's a horrible thing to say, isn't it?" "Not necessarily," Pericles reassured. His quiet voice had gone grim, while his features belied the sort of rapt focus that wouldn't ease up without an answer to satisfy it. "Are they unkind to you?"

There was something he understood intimately about the animagi ability being a form of escape. Inwardly, he observed Eve likely shared the same sentiment. It was no wonder her initial transformation resulted in surrender to the Transformation. Rather than remark on it, however, he let another concern take the forefront. Pear delicately pried: "France is quite the change. I trust they don't intend to transfer you to Beauxbatons...?" A muted tone and widened eyes belayed worry. His friend and mentee wasn't eluding him this time around. Try as they may to insist all was well and get back to practice, as more had slipped from them than they meant to convey, the metaphorical cat was already out of the bag. The mage's speech was a fraction too soft to be called stern. It was dogged, all the same, as he tucked the Liber Animagi under an arm, stowed his wand, and took a seat on a stump with an aura of deliberation. Pear was sat. "Mahl, you know I commend your enthusiasm. Yet it sounds to me as though your mind isn't all too clear." A pale hand patted the overlarge stretch of stump to his left. "Sickle for your thoughts? Consider-" what was the phrase? "-'venting' to be a part of our exercise."
