Stars And Snowflakes
Hestia excitedly ran towards the great hall. The castle halls were filled with chilly air, but that was soon contrasted by the warm air of the great hall. When she came in she could see that many had come before her. She watched as they gathered in the groups. She noted how the older students managed to charm the ornaments to do different things. She felt a pang of jealousy that was mixed with admiration. She had no trouble imagining what she would do if she knew what they knew. She would create a cardboard square with a carefully painted snow cottages against a background of dark blue background that had stars that actually shot above the snowy roofs. She would also make
sparkly baubles with a stripe of ribbon running across the middle, that would gradually change colors. Whatever, maybe she'll be able to do that next year. Now she'll just focus on what she would be able to do now.
Even without special spells, it wasn't limited. She observed the craft supplies on the table. There was a large arsenal of different colored paper, tubes of glitter, pieces of cardboard. This made Hestia even more excited. She never had access to this many craft supplies before. She took a step back to plan her first ornament that she was going to create. She picked up a piece of cardboard, thinking of the whole snow cottage idea, except with non magical shooting stars. No, no she should start simpler... She glances at a white square of paper and got a fantastic idea.
She grabbed the square of paper. She then folded it into a triangle. She grabbed a corner of her paper triangle and folded it to the left. Now the most difficult part...Hestia took a deep breath, she knew these next parts would take great concentration, courage and determination. She shakes her shoulders and goes in for the maneuver. She folds the two corners of her folded paper triangle behind the tip carefully with her slender fingers. She sighed, the corners were folded unevenly, she would have to try again. She went in one more time...and YES! Mission success. The result was a pointy triangle with two pointy ears. Hestia grabbed the pair of scissors and looked into her reflection in the two blades before brutally cutting the paper ears off. As the paper ears fell slowly down onto the floor, something caught her eye.
Something that would make this craft infinitely more better. She walked up to it, seeing a reflecting of the starry ceiling upon it. She cast her plain scissors aside, leaving them forsaken. She had no use for them she had used them for what she wanted, now she was ready to move onto some more attractive scissors. She picked up the scissors with wavy patterned blades, she couldn't wait to see how these would affect the designs she would cut into her paper triangle. She started at the corner, keeping things simple by making a crescent with wavy edges. She moved an inch or two above the crescent and made a more complicated design, making waves with varying heights, avoiding cutting off the corner and completely cutting off part of her triangle. She again moved and inch, now she was at the edge. She made this pattern the most complicated, making the groves as close to the center as she could. She put the curvy scissors down, he work was complete. Now it was time to see the end result. She stuck her fingernails in front of one of the layers of the folded paper in order to unfold the rest. She held the snowflake with two hands.
Perfect. Now it was time for the second phase that she had planned. She got a piece of cardboard off a stack that had the rest of them She laid the cardboard one on of the tables. Her eyes scanned the supply table until she found what she was looking for. A black marker, with a thin tip. She grabbed the marker and uncapped it. She used her mouth to hold the cap so she can test if the ink was dry or not. She moved the marker across the top of her hand, making a stark black mark. She capped the marker and gripped it tightly in her hand. She took it too her work space, splaying her snowflake on the cardboard. She made sure that it was flat against the cardboard and that each inch of the backside of it was touching cardboard. She uncapped her marker again, also again holding the cap with her mouth. She held down the paper snowflake with one hand and used the other to outline the snowflake. She carefully outlines the edges of the snowflake squinting her eyes in focus, seeing as the had the larger perimeter. She then felt able to move onto the inner edges of the snowflakes.
She brushed the paper aside and lifted the piece of cardboard off her work space. She looked it up and down. Her outline was neat, except for a few black frays around the outline of the outer shape. Perfect. She went back to the supply table to find another necessary tool for her plan. She looked at the table, finding a utility knife by the scissors. She walked back to her area. She puts her thumb underneath the black button. She slowly pushed out the blade. She rearrange the knife so the blade is facing downwards. She stabs it into the cardboard, quickly making work of the outer shape, cutting accord to the guidelines she had set down. She pops the shape out of the square piece of the cardboard, and cuts out the smaller shapes in the snowflake, moving the knife up and down in a steady motion. Turning the blade carefully in the many corners that were in the design of the snowflake.
She popped out all the shapes watching as they fell onto the work space. Returning to the supply table one last time, she grabs a bottle of glue, a tube of fiery orange glitter and small piece of twine. She returned back to her cardboard snowflake. She unscrews the orange end of the glue and drizzles it on the snowflake. She rubs the glue around the snowflake to create a thin layer of white transparent glaze, not caring about how sticky her fingers now were. She grabbed the tube of glitter, overturning it above the snowflake. She shook it up and down, raining down copious amounts of the glitter onto the sticky surface of the cardboard. She carefully swept the excess off of the snowflake and waited for it to dry. Once the few seconds are over she turns the snowflake, so it's backside was facing the ceiling. She grabs the glue, putting a small dot on the top tip. She loops the twine and sticks it on the back. She turns the snowflake back onto the right side, taking a step back to admire her work. It was simple and unmagical, yet Hestia was proud and couldn't wait to put it on the tree.
