" Good God "

The immensity of the entire situation washed over Albert like leagues high waves crashing against the shore. Before, above, behind, and below stood a testament to a world he had just barely stuck his toe in. Greeted by an elder wizard, with quite the astonishing beard, that seemed to be clad in ARMOR! He had believed that the worlds biggest trick was the portal of a wall that separated the train stations... But now...

Dark chestnut eyes followed the curved architecture of the enormous room. Tracing the arch of the old stone walls as they dissipated into the inky and star stained ceiling above. Soft flickering whispers of flame danced like fireflies through the air, each candle moving as if held by hap hazard specters and their wax disappearing before dripping from the yellow white cylinders. Their soft illumination filling the hall with light, casting small shadows and giving each cheers and hurrah a glint or gleam.

Beautiful.

Absorbed by the finely crafted portraits that adorned the walls, which Albert was surprised to find held subjects that would laugh, dance, and leave all together to join their painted friends in merry making. Mr.Hess longed to know exactly what was happening here. A spell? A trick? Could he do that? Would he never be able to do that? Each question larger than the last, and none as terrifying as the one to come. He did not realize his name had been called.

"MR.HESS"

The call came to him and gave him a start. Much like grabbing the shoulder of someone deep into a book, Albert whirled his attention before him. He had hardly realized that in his examination of the room he had followed this long group to the front of the hall. Before him a grand dias, a long table atop it. Behind the old looking structure sat many older individuals. Albert could only surmise that these were teachers or professors, or staff in general. Albert would try to remember these faces, and anything else he could see about them as it might help him not be a fool later.

" Mr. Hess please..."

" Of course, I'm sorry. Just a little distracted."

Moving forwards, Albert batted the opening of his robe aside to stride easily. Taking his seat atop the stool. Now, facing back the way he came, the room only seemed larger. He could eye the great doors he had entered through again, the long tables filled almost entirely by other students cheering, laughing and stuffing themselves with the bountiful feast before them. Directly in front of him the crowd of other first year students excited to take their place upon the stool... 'Why am I sitting here again?'

In all the excitement he had missed the speech and witty retort of the mad haberdashers experiment. Turning to glance at the staff that was holding the ratty looking black hat, he turned back as the hat was placed down atop his head. Then a voice came.

"Oh! It has been a very long time since I've seen your blood here."

" Well...Pleased to make you acquaintance. "

The hat offered a chuckle, as perhaps any hat could? " Quite. You seem different Albert. Your family was different. Good or bad is irrelevant. Influence, power and skill make the determination of a person. Do you agree Albert?"

" I uh... That is... Actions are what matters, but motive is the difference between mercy and malice? "

" Do you seek glory Albert? Riches?....Power?"

The last word hung heavily out of the fabric lips of the hat. It tickled the back of Alberts neck and sent shocks through his body. It was tempting, as if a simple answer here would reward him with anything. Everything. Albert's fingers clenched into fists as his thoughts raced and bounded over obstacles attempting to pull apart the hats statement before finally in a exhale he responded.

" I want to Know. Not for them, or anyone. I just want to do, be, discover... " His voice was like a whisper, soft and hoarse as if pulled from his inner being from the hat.

" You are not who they were. Time will tell what you grow to be. "

" HUFFLEPUFF "

Albert removed the hat. Stood, and walked back down the steps. Eyes trained forwards, and lost in thought. Questions swam behind his eyes, like great big fish that broke the surface to flex and shake in the cold sea air before plunging back into the quenching grasp of the depths. He felt, all at once, excited and defeated. As if he had started a game, that he would never have equal footing on. How did the hat know him?... Who was his family?... What the hell is Hufflepuff?

The chitter chatter and humbug of the ebullient room withered away as the last claps reverberated dully in the great chamber, and there Liam sat, basking in the somber silence as if on vigil. The air had become tangible, thick with the jostling first years bustling thoughts, and for a prolonged moment the only audible sound was the slow pitter patter of Solomon’s finger. The solemn, eerie air was abruptly broke by the booming bellow of the first name being called,

Albert Hess!”

Liam discreetly thanked the lord that he was not first-although he was not to sure if the Bible was to be believed in anymore, it had never mentioned a wizarding world. Upon the first hearing of the bewitched-a year ago, today-Liam was immediately struck with quizzical intrigue. He had thrown his humble beginnings and thrives with a sort of lust to understand the world around him, comprehend magic, and, more significantly, understand why his mother left him. Though this was not to mean he would let this steadfast drive get in the way of his ethically righteous upbringing, only further it, in fact. His ponderous thoughts were alleviated when his name was called.

“Liam Bennett!”

Liam walked with a stumbling gait, not to short of a toddlers waddle. Seeping sweat gathered on his plans like dew as he approaches; he tried to steady himself to a confident stride. Unfortunately, this was to no avail. This only perturbed Liam even more, almost to a dubious extent. The red, silken carpet before him seemed to infinitely stretch, reaching far out of the horizon, preposterously taunting him to catch up. Liam shivered harshly in a cold sweat, steadying himself once again, walking on a thin line of social pressure. He would reminisce on the moment later, and recall it to be a mystical and magical time, and that it was, but with a bit more social pressure. He finally reached the peak of the stage, scrupulously sitting down on the chair- which in his poor etiquette ended up being a firm plop anyway. The leather bound hat was lethargically places stop his head, and so it began to speak-

“Hmmm, yes, I see. Shockingly humble, a good heart with well set intentions. A throbbing thrust for knowledge of here-this mystical wizarding world- and of those missing in his life. This lust for knowledge will lead you down a certain path, boy-possibly a great one. Best of luck, and
RAVENCLAW!”

The silent room suddenly burst into a jovial cheer of applause, then proceeded to die down back into the silent solemnity. Liam was directed back to his seat, lungs drawn of in a knot, he finally released a large exhale of pent up air. He was content with his house; believes it was the one to lead him to where he needed to go. The pressure slowly faded into relaxation as he gathered the world around, and drifted into a deep, hazy thought.

I had heard stories of what Hogwarts was like from my father and his siblings. My mother went to Durmstrang. There was always heated debates at home over which school was better but growing up in Ireland, I was destined for Hogwarts. As I walked into the great hall for the first time during the sorting ceremony, I stood awestruck by the magnitude of the room and was assured my father was correct. This was going to be quite a momentous and overwhelming seven years, but I was going to come out of Hogwarts as yet another great witch.

Leading up to my first day at Hogwarts, my aunts and uncles liked to fight over which house they thought I would be sorted. My father and his three siblings were each sorted into a different house. Uncle Jamison, a Hufflepuff alum, fought hard for Hufflepuff, while my father claimed my passion for learning would cause the sorting hat to place me in Ravenclaw like he was many years ago. Aunt Marigold felt Gryffindor was the best place for me much but wouldn't say why. I think she just had a lot of Gryffindor pride. My Aunt Octavia said with my level of ambition, there was no way I would be placed in any house but Slytherin. I think they even took bets on my future sorting.

I waited along with the other first year students towards the front of the room until my name was called. Many others went before me, sorting students in every house. Each time a new student was sorted, the fellow students in that house cheered. It was relieving to hear such support from each house. I continued to wait for what felt like hours as other students names were called before mine. "I am always called near the end," Tyr sighed to herself. Every seat would be taken at the different tables before she was called.

"Tyranni Whitethorn!" Headmaster Lear called out.

I was startled by hearing my name, as I think I began to zone out waiting for it to be called. I walked up to the front eager to get the sorting finished so that I could finally sit down and get some food. The sorting hat was placed upon my head.

Tyranni Whitethorn. You know, I sorted all of your family many years ago. Unique bunch they were. All four sorted into different houses. That diversity in one family is not common. You however are not so confusing. I can see you have potential for any house, but one does stand out. Yes, you shall be....HOUSE SLYTHERIN!!!

I jumped down from the front and immediately went to the Slytherin table, elated to be done with the sorting ceremony. I was not a fan of being in front of so many watchful eyes. Luckily, there was still a spot open to sit.

‘So this is the great hall,’ Lily thought, as she walked through the large doors, her eyes moving around as she tried to take it all in at once, unable and feeling overwhelmed. Her eyes widened when she looked towards the headmaster as he stood at the door, before her eyes looked towards the large table at the front of the hall. She looked over every single professor, nerves filling her. He smiled at the headmaster as she walked past, greeting him, before standing where the other students were.

She automatically felt blessed to be here, as she watched the headmaster move towards the large table, standing near it and using a charm to amplify his voice. Lily heard the main parts of the speech, however her mind was elsewhere, looking towards the other areas of the hall. The large tables in the middle probably held over nine hundred students. Upon noticing this, Lily’s nerves kicked in, and she subconsciously shoved her hands in the pockets of her robes. She noticed the man motioning towards the professors, and looked towards all of them.

She didn’t have much of an opinion about the heads of houses, except that she hoped that they would be kind and accept all the students. She looked over the other professors as the headmaster went on, before jumping as the hat began to sing. She watched it with confusion. How could a hat, be both intelligent and sentient. She watched the hat, before the professor called out several names.

There weren’t many students with the last name starting with A, however there were some. He went through each person, watching as they came and went. There were almost an equal amount of each house. Lily watched as the person before her went up and was sorted into Gryffindor.

“Lily... Bjorndotti?”
“Björndotti.” She instinctively corrected the headmaster as she walked up past him and sat on the stool, her hands on her knees as the hat was placed on her head, her eyes being covered by the hat. She immediately felt uncomfortable, as it went over the back of the head and pressed her curly hair to her head. She pressed down the urge to move it, and sat still, uncomfortable.

‘Ah, a Björndotti. I haven’t had one of you in a long, long time. Last Björndotti I had was many generations ago, a muggle born wizard. Sorted into Ravenclaw, if I remember correctly. And of course I know your father’s line! Thomson’s, a strong pure blooded family. Quite a shame your father could not come here.
‘He told me a lot about Hogwarts.’
‘Yes, I see. You wish to go into either Hufflepuff or Ravenclaw?’
Yes. Although, it’s up to you and honestly I don’t know where I should go.
‘Well, you could do very well in either house, however, there’s something else. Your sense of right and wrong is very strong and you have your own morals, like a Hufflepuff, however you are very intelligent and cunning, able to use different solutions to problems. So, perhaps you would do well in Ravenclaw. However, there is something else. You are a natural leader, and have a disregard for the rules... I know exactly where to put you.’
’Slytherin? I’m not sure.’

The hat yelled out Slytherin before she could finish the thought, the headmaster puffing it off her head as she stood, smiling at the headmaster before nervously moving towards the Slytherin table. She couldn’t see the Slytherin traits within her, being extremely nervous of being in the wrong house. She swallowed as she sat next to another first year, her hands shaking as she placed them on the table, looking towards the headmaster.

She looked towards her head of house. She didn’t have an opinion, however, she hoped she would get to know the head of house and her other teachers, and the other heads of houses.

Hestia gripped the sleeves of her new robes nervously. She carefully listened to the headmaster who was notably of a intimidating height. They were going to be sorted into 'houses'?! what did that mean. It appeared they were going to find out soon, the sentient hat was quite startling honestly. It begun talking about the qualities of the different houses.
Gryffindors were brave and daring...Hestia wondered how daring they were and if it was a house full of daredevils..Hufflepuff sounding appealing, they were patient and loyal. That seemed like a drama free and peaceful house...The next house Ravenclaw, that was definitely where all the nerds went..It seemed like a good place to get help on your homework. Slytherin...Hestia wasn't too sure about Slytherin..The hat's description of it was a bit vague..
Hestia soon noticed the students were being called to the stool according to alphabetical order based on their last names. That meant that she was going to have the must old hat set upon her head soon. Her eyes nervously darted around the room, Soon enough.
"Bauer!"
Hestia shuffled over to the stool and sat on it. The hat was sat onto her head. She sat, hunched down. Soon she perked up, hearing a voice.
["]Hmmm...Interesting"
What did interesting mean? Was that bad?
"You have a thirst for adventure..you want to explore the world, yet not for the pursuit of knowledge..Ravenclaw is not for you...
Hestia was slightly disappointed that she wouldn't get to hang with the nerds.
"Alright, Slytherin!"
It appeared that Hestia was at the mercy of the cunning ones.

Charlotte was so nervous. She caught her brother's eye at the Gryffindor table and tried forcing a shaky smile as she turned around to face the mass of humanity before her. He gave her a reassuring wink. She didn't dare glance again at any faces, afraid she would grow attached to someone only to find she was in Hufflepuff, or worse and yet more likely, Slytherin.
The Sorting Hat was placed on her head, and rather than falling over her eyes, her frizzy hair held it atop her head.
Charlotte jumped when she heard the voice of the hat, even though she knew it was coming. Darn nerves.
Hmmm, a Harrington! Well, I don't know if Gryffindor's quite right. Imagine spending all that time with your brother! That won't do...
Charlotte let out a breath she hadn't realized she had been holding. What a load of pressure taken off.
Not Hufflepuff, you say? Ah, I see-you're too "interesting" to be in Hufflepuff...
A croaky laugh sounded.
Slytherin, though...I could see it. With that potential, you could certainly make a mark upon the world with the push of ambition, but your compassion surely outweighs...
Charlotte felt dizzy-thank the Lord the hat passed her up on Slytherin-it dawned on her, and she smiled, crooked teeth and all, that she (like her father) was going to be a-
RAVENCLAW!
Charlotte jumped up, took off the hat, and bounded over to Ravenclaw, flashing her brother a thumbs-up.

Janet's knees shook as she entered the Great Hall and tried to stay at the back of the group of first years. The first thing she noticed was a dusty and ripped old hat sitting on a stool. They all seemed to be just as nervous as her as they all faced the eyes of all the other students. Janet waited until her name was called, it seemed to last forever though...

SLYTHERIN! shouted the hat
HUFFLEPUFF! it shouted again
GRYFFINDOR!
RAVENCLAW!
HUFFLEPUFF!

more and more names were called, there were Gryffindors and Hufflepuffs and Janet began to wonder if there had been some kind of mistake, maybe she wasn't a witch, maybe there had been some sort of mistake, maybe she was a squib! but when there were only 6 people left to be sorted finally her name was called...

"Jackson Janet!"

knees shaking, she sat on the stool...

"hmm... plenty of brains I see, yet you seem to have a thirst for adventure... but where to put you..." said the hat

Janet (not for the first time) considered which house she actually wanted to be in. Ravenclaw seemed like a good one, but she thought that she would Gryffindor, they were the bravest.

"very keen to make friends aren't you? maybe a Hufflepuff... but also to prove yourself... Slytherin could help you with that"

Yes, Janet wanted to be Gryffindor, she crossed her fingers and whispered to the hat,
"Gryffindor, Gryffindor please let it be Gryffindor"

"Gryffindor eh? are you sure? you could also make a good Ravenclaw... better be..."
GRYFFINDOR!

Janet sighed in relief and suddenly, feeling much more confident, skipped off to join the Gryffindor table who were clapping loudly.

It felt like only yesterday Agatha had received her letter from Hogwarts. Last year she'd turned eleven but because of her late birthday she had to wait another year to attend the school. At first she hadn't been bothered, because who wanted to go to boarding school anyways, but after a while she felt...frustrated, like she was waiting for something she just couldn't have yet. And Agatha wasn't the most patient of people.

After a while she began to forget about Hogwarts, since none of her siblings attended it. She continued on with her studies with her tutors like normal until the summer, when an owl flew into her room carrying the famed letter.

Agatha had opened it with haste, unlike how she would have if anyone had been around. Her eyes poured over it's contents, from the acceptance letter to the list of required school supplies. It was as if a tiny spark had lit in her stomach, threatening to burst into flames if she allowed it to. She had to smother a grin when she went to show it to her parents, who congratulated her accordingly and made plans to go shopping later on. Then Agatha was left to wonder in anticipation for the rest of the summer, all the way to the special day of September 1at.

Now she was standing in the middle of the Sorting Ceremony, having survived the first year train ride and boat crossing, waiting for her name to be called so she could be sorted into one of the four renown House of Hogwarts. Was she excited? Merrily. She simply was ready to claim the bed she certainly be enjoying with the amount of comfortable pillows and blankets she'd brought. Agatha deserved sleep after everything she'd endured for the past twenty-four, or so, hours.

Fortunately her last name was close to the beginning of the alphabet so she didn't have to worry about standing for an exceedingly long period of time. Shortly after the Headmaster completed his annual speech and the Sorting Hat finished his famous song, the scroll of names was unleashed and they got to the C's.

“Chaim, Agatha.”

Her eyebrows knitted together as she approached the stool, her mind suddenly flooding with thoughts of both excitement and apprehension. Agatha was the only one in her immediate family to be born in Ireland, and the only to have gone to Hogwarts. Her mother graduated from Beauxbatons and her father from Durmstrang. Her brothers and sisters went to one or another respectively. While she had some other family here in the U.K. who went to the school, they were still distant, and it made it hard for her figure out one important thing that kept nagging her lately, which House she'd most likely be sorted into.

The Sorting Hat was placed atop her little head and the process began.

“Ah, Agatha Chaim...like a bell, I presume? How peculiar...No matter, let's get on with this sorting, shall we?”

Yes, let's, because you surely got my name wrong, thought Agatha, with a hint of agitation. The Hat made no remark to that, and she couldn't blame him. He was probably used it by now, after centuries of the sorting self-centered adolescents such as herself.

As she expected, and hoped, the sorting went quickly. Yet, it left her with more questions than answers. “Ah, I see. You have become resilient to others over the years, forced into a sense of isolation that you think is all, but it is not, Miss Chaim. Learn to embrace others, because you'll need them at times.”

Agatha wrinkled her nose at that. She didn't think she needed anyone, she could definitely handle things by herself, when it came to academics. And that's all that mattered at this school anyways...right? “I sense a great deal of intelligence and inquisitiveness, an earnest to learn but perhaps not the best attitude for it. Nevertheless, your undying curiosity for the unknown and your unwavering thirst for independence has left me with no choice but to place you into...Rᴀᴠᴇɴᴄʟᴀᴡ.”

Agatha forced a grin as she stood up and made her way to her designated table, head high. It made sense, now, that she was put into a House such as this. She was of course intelligent, and wise, although the Sorting Hat never said that for some odd reason, but...as she say don't between her fellow students, she couldn't figure out why her eyes kept sliding towards the house of green...

Grace was extremely nervous, she knew today was the day that she would be sorted. She took a deep breath and got out of the Hogwarts Express to the boats then from there into the castle, she looked at the other nervous faces of students but some were smiling as if they knew what house they were going to be sorted in “It’s fine Grace, Hermione Granger was a top student and in Gryffindor” Grace thought even though she doubted she’d be in Gryffindor since she was a coward, afraid of almost everything. The first years finally entered the great hall and Grace got more nervous, she would be what her father usually said: a nervous wreck.

Grace stood as names were being called not just names but also houses “Slytherin!” “Hufflepuff!” Ravenclaw!” “Gryffindor!” “Slytherin!” Then Grace heard it “Mint, Grace!” Grace walked up to where the hat is, hearing a few snickers of her last name. Grace sat on the stool and felt the hat being placed on her head “Ah, a Mint. I remember your mother, it took quite long to choose her house” the hat said “Well I feel much potential in you, but you also seem plain” the hat said, spitting it like a curse word “You seem smart, very, very smart, not brave for Gryffindor, and too plain for Hufflepuff and not good enough for Slytherin” the hat said “YES YES YES!” “Very well then, RAVENCLAW!Grace cheered him her mind) with excitement and went to the Ravenclaw table, she felt like she belonged.

The Great Hall was even greater than Yeji had even anticipated. Her mother had told her many stories of Hogwarts but to experience the site was a story of its own. The roar of conversation amongst the four dining tables set in a rush of nervousness. Though, Yeji continued to move along excitedly with the other newcomers.

The entire hall came to a complete silence once a tall bearded man wearing armor stood in front of the hall. The man was giving a speech, although Yeji had a hard time understanding what was being said. There were too many complex terms that she never learned, so she just sat quietly and mimicked what the people around her were doing.

The sorting ceremony was finally about to begin. A big worn-down hat was brought to the stage, and Yeji was surprised to hear it talking; she had assumed her mother was making up that part of the story. Yeji was hoping that she would be placed in Slytherin since her mother had been placed into Slytherin. However, she would still be fine with whatever house she was sorted into.

"Ahn. Yeji, Ahn."

Yeji made her way up to the stage. She had a huge smile on her face but it was more so out of nervousness. As she sat down upon the stool and looked outward, it felt as if the whole universe was centered on her. She could feel it; the stares of everyone in the hall. The hat was placed upon Yeji's head and at first, nothing happened. Feeling nervous, Yeji made a sarcastic remark as an impulse: "Take your time." Her English sounded somewhat poor, and she immediately covered her mouth feeling she felt a grave mistake. The hat let out a laugh "You're just like your mother. Although, you lack your mother's desire to become a powerful witch. I have just a hint of what you're passions are, but you have a foggy future."

The hat said nothing more for a moment, but it felt like an hour. Yeji wondered what the hat met by her mother's desire to be a powerful witch; she wasn't sure whether to take that as something good or bad. Her thoughts were cut off once the hat jolted again.

"RAVENCLAW!"

Yeji stood from the stool and the table of blue cheered. She walked over to the table and was greeted by a group of people. This place was her new home and the people her family.
