OOC note:Everything Bailey was saying about letters Sage understood, especially the not sending them part. She couldn't count how many times she'd sat down to try and spell out a letter to her dad and massively failed. She still hadn't answered him. She probably should make up her mind if she was going to.
She burst out laughing when Bailey said she couldn't be that bad at cooking. "Trust me, I am. Maybe I need you to teach me how to cook and bake!"
She noticed her cheeks go pink, but didn't comment on it. "I don't even know what I'd do if rumors like that went around about me! How do you deal with it?" If a rumor ever spread about Sage dating a friend of her's (which she wasn't and didn't want to), she'd scream.
Sage froze at the mention of her mum. Why, she didn't know; she had been the one to bring her up, after all. Maybe she'd never really get used to living without her, even if it had happened when she was a toddler. How could you ever recover from such a thing?
"Yeah. She- Seemed like she really loved her house from what I've heard." It was taking all her will to not burst out with a bunch of thoughts on her mum and everything.
"Hufflepuff is nice, though not exactly the house I expected. My dad's a muggle, so he had no real effect on the situation. Except for the fact he decided he hated witches after Mum died. Cassie- my step-mum- she always told me I'd be a Slytherin since that was what she had been, and she was the one to teach me everything. Really, I had two choices out of four. I think she was a bit bewildered when I told her the Sorting Hat called out Hufflepuff. I guess I just always assumed-" She stopped herself short. "Sorry. You probably don't want to hear all this..."

Sage seemed to understand everything Bailey was saying, something Bailey found comfort in. Finding a kindred spirit in Sage, Bailey laughed alongside the younger girl. “I wouldn’t mind teaching you, if you’re truly interested” Bailey said, serious in her offer. Bailey loved baking and cooking, and loved teaching, so spending time in the kitchen teaching seemed like a great way to spend an afternoon.
Their conversation moved on, and Bailey shrugged when sage asked how she dealt with the rumors. “I dunno… I guess lol and I kinda joke about it, and I try explaining the situation who approaches me about it… but I feel like that always leaves people with more questions..”
Sage seemed to have more to say about her mum, and Bailey wanted to let her talk but she wasn’t completely sure the girl was willing to chat about something so personal with an almost stranger.
“The Griffindors I know are all really nice, and I am sure your mum was wonderful!” Bailey said, making an attempt to give sage the chance to talk if she wanted to, or to drop the topic if she didn’t.
Bailey smiled listening to sage ramble about her house. When the younger girl apologized for talking Bailey was quick to assure her she didn’t mind at all.
“no, no, go on! I don’t mind listening, I was enjoying listening to you actually”

OOC note:Bailey's offer seemed genuine, so Sage would reply, "Well, my birthday isn't till November, but maybe you could teach me how to bake a cake for it?" she offered. Sage had tried to bake before, with Cassie, and it usually ended up in a glob of a mess. Kora was the cook and baker of the family; her cakes always tasted like heaven and everything good wrapped up in one bite.
She nodded, her eyebrows slightly wrinkled in concern. The toll of being shipped with your best friend couldn't be easy on anyone. "You seem to be handling it very well for such a situation," Sage told her. "Don't be afraid to yell at them if they don't get the message, though." Although, maybe yelling wasn't the route to take; Sage couldn't picture Bailey ever yelling at anyone- she seemed to sweet!
She ducked her head, balancing her chin on her knees. She crumbled the letter, which had found its way into her hands, between the palms and unfolded it. She wanted to break those words, and then unbreak them to read them over and over again.
"Yeah. Everyone that knew her at Hogwarts said she was...."
Sage didn't actually know... anything about her mum's time at Hogwarts besides the fact she was in Gryffindor. Was it normal to not know anything about your late mother?
"Okay, um... This is going to be a rant because I hate my father right now." She tossed the letter towards Bailey. "I haven't had a proper conversation with my dad since I was like seven. Mum died when I was two, lost my leg in the accident that killed her. Dad's a muggle and doesn't understand magic, more specifically witches. He- he hates me for being a witch. He remarried my step-mum, Cassie, who is also a witch. Cassie, her daughter Kora, and I left Christopher and live in Kent now. Without him. But the very last day in my first year, he sent me a letter. That letter. And I haven't answered yet. I don't know if I will, if I can."

"Cake is one of my favorite things to make!!! I bet we could make a MASTERPIECE if we tried, and your birthday would be a perfect occasion! it's a plan!" Bailey said, excited at the prospect of making something with someone. Cake truly was one of bailey's great loves lmao and mine too OOC, and she would love to share it with sage.
Bailey looked down at her hands at sage's comment about her handling the shipping well. "i try" she said, with a laugh. "there was only one time i snapped and totally yelled at someone about it, and honestly that was ALL my fault. @Hanako Tone did have it coming for him, and i felt quite guilty after, but we've resolved our problems. He really... he's a good guy, a good friend, but not many see that side of him."
bailey was sure it was hard to imagine her, the 'sunshine sweet not-going-to-hurt-a-soul' elder sister figure, ever yelling at someone, or snapping like she had at Hana, but Kim was - on occasion - a touchy subject. She could be possessive of him too, and that didn't help the rumors, or really anything at all.
As the topic turned to sage and her family, bailey hoped she wasn't pushing the younger girl, but knew that Sage probably just needed to talk - or rant, as she then said.
Bailey caught the letter, smoothing it out but not reading it. She kept her eyes on Sage, wanting to give the younger girl her whole attention as she explain the whole situation.
"that is a lot - thank you for sharing with me. that... is a lot, and i totally understand not wanting to answer. Having someone show up out of the blue - or even reach out out of the blue - is hard, especially if its someone like your father, who is like supposed to be taking care of you. I couldn't imagine not having my dad... or my mum. I am so sorry for the loss of your mum, and however silly it sounds, the loss of your leg too. And, to some extent, the loss of your father, even if its not as.... permanent. loss is .... hard, especially the not so permeant loss of someone who decides one day to up and leave."
Looking down at the letter in her hand, bailey glanced back up to sage and asked softly "do you mind if i read the letter?". Bailey waited for a reply before acting further.

OOC note:A masterpiece. While Sage doubted she could be capable of making something both pleasing to the eye and edible, perhaps Bailey would be able to give her enough advice to get to that level. It was worth a shot. She smiled and nodded, confirming the plan.
Trying, as Bailey admitted to do, was really the only thing any of them could do. That went for both shipping between friends and family issues. Part of Sage was surprised to hear that Bailey had shouted at someone, but really anyone was capable of doing that. This Hanako was unfamiliar to Sage, but if he had it coming she wouldn't say anything about it. Bailey did give him his karma.
"I wish people could just understand that sometimes- most of the time- people's romantic status is none of their business," she commented. "What would it even matter if you and Kim were dating or not? I mean, I'm sure you two could make a great couple but if you're just friends then you're just friends."
She watched Bailey's hands latch around the letter. The letter that had kept her awake at night for the past few months. And, thankfully, Bailey did go with the usual "Oh my god that's terrible you poor thing being disabled and having a dead mum and oh my god!" like Sage had heard before. She hated that, the pity. The pity made her feel small, like she was just this sad little kid who needed pity to survive. She really didn't.
"Yeah," Sage mumbled, picking at some dry skin by her nails. "It's not being disabled that I'm mad about, I'm happy with who I am physically and mentally, it's that Dad just... just hasn't been there. My step-mum is great, don't get me wrong, she's been there for every misstep and moment since she married Dad, but it still feels weird. You're lucky, have your mum and dad."
She hesitated at Bailey's question. No one, besides Cassie, had read it. She took a deep breath and nodded. "Yeah. Go ahead."

Sage nodded to bailey's proffered cake lesson and bailey smiled, excited to get to teach someone about something she loved so much, especially since it involved sugar.
Sage's comment about wishing people understood that sometimes someone's romantic entanglements were none of their business struck bailey as very true and very valid. Not a lot of people would think like that - many people, bailey included, were curious people, but sage was right; it really was none of their business. "you're totally right - people dont need to know, and it really is none of their business.... it just doesn't seem like that many people get that? you're in a really mature headspace to have realized that already, thank you for reminding me!"
Later in their conversation, bailey noticed sage picking at some dry skin. Bailey saw the nervous habit, because it was one of her own as well. Resisting the urge to pick at her own hands, bailey concentrated on listening.
"im glad you're in a good space mentally, about your disabilities and physical ability etc... im really sorry that your dad has been absent, that's just awful. I am.. i am really lucky, with my parents. i supposed i dont realize how lucky i am most of the time thought....
anyways, is there anything, any way i can help you feel more supported?" if that's not a weird thing to say.... sorry if im overstepping a boundary, i know we kinda just met..."

OOC note: maybe we each do one more reply?Ravenclaw was certainly the best house for Bailey. Her guidance along with her wisdom, even though their chatting had been short, the older girl felt like an older sister. Hopefully that wisdom would go as far to teach Sage how to actually bake.
"I mean, even if you and Kim were dating- I'm sure you'd be a cute couple- who cares? People should just focus on themselves and stop bothering people," she said. "Of course, everyone needs a good bit of advice sometimes."
A bubble seemed to form in Sage's throat, bobbing up and down. Bailey seemed great, but it was often the best people who really weren't so great at heart. Something about her could tell her new friend was different, better. Her next words proved that to Sage.
"Thank you," she whispered, eyes slightly wide at how great she had replied. "Really, thank you. And make sure to appreciate your parents, tell them that. People always have to go at some point and you have to tell them before it's too late."
She looked off in the distance, not able to focus on anything for a moment. Breathing in, breathing out, and continuing to breathe through it all. And next to her was someone supportive enough to help, to offer aid.
"It's okay! You aren't overstepping with anything." Sage paused. That was the funny thing about magic, there was no spell to remove the hurt, no potion to take it all away and leave her with joy. "Well, you just need to teach me how to cook! That's what I honestly need, a good distraction."

Bailey was actually thrilled at the idea of teaching Sage how to bake a cake - she loved food, and loved sharing that love of food with the people around her.
Bailey laughed at Sage's comment about her and Kim making a cute couple. "Everyone says that, and honestly i think we would be if we weren't strictly platonic friends. But yes i agree, people do need to mind their own business, but i do understand wanting to be nosy, but still i want people to not be in my business, you know?"
Bailey watched Sage's eyes widen slightly, and bailey's heart warmed as sage spoke. Bailey nodded, "I do my best to tell my parent's as often as i can how much they mean to me... i realize how lucky i am to have them.."
Watching as sage phased out of the conversation, bailey stopped talking. They were having a moment, she felt it. The silence between them lingered in the air, bailey hoping she hadn't overstepped with anything she said. She really liked sage, and she wanted to spend more time with her, without her messing it up by saying something weird.
"I can do that for sure! Let me know when and let's make a cake or cookies or something! There are so many fun things we can make, and being in the kitchen is a wonderful distraction!"

OOC note: thanks for doing this thread with me!She laughed, that was a good sign in Sage’s mind that she hadn’t overstepped. Sage listened carefully, taking note of every word Bailey chose. "Absolutely. You deserve to not have people meddling in your business. It’s your friendship, not anyone else’s besides your friend’s, obviously."
Sage could only imagine how annoying it would be, to wake up and have everyone wanting her with someone. Bailey was strong for dealing with it, even wiser for not letting it ruin her. Sage doubted she would be as collected if she was in Bailey’s shoes.
The moment after Bailey’s reply about her parents felt sacred. Like they were both beginning to understand how deeply their connection had been felt. Sage savored it in the same way she felt Bailey savored the food she cooked. Never having had a true biological sibling- close as she and Kora were, they weren’t bound by blood relation- Sage felt Bailey was as close to an older sister that she would ever have.
"Yes!" Sage grinned, nodding enthusiastically. "I’d love that, I’m sure you’d be an excellent teacher. I’ve been needing a good cooking lesson anyhow."
Sage stood, making sure she had everything she’d brought with her. "It’s been great talking to you, Bailey! I really need to turn back in, I’ll try and seek you out so we can do some baking!" She offered a quick wave. "Goodbye!"Sage has now left this thread.
