Kaia chuckled at Lilith's remark that she would never skip a History of Magic class. At that moment, she realised that talking to her was surprisingly easy. Easier than she had expected when she opened the compartment door. Perhaps because she never tried to give the “right” answer, but always seemed sincere.
And, as a result, she was too.

When she started talking about her family, about finally having some freedom, Kaia listened quietly. She didn't know her well enough to understand how much levity or frustration there was in her words, but she could clearly sense her need to break away. She wasn't sure she could really understand.
So Kaia asked.
"Can I ask you why you feel such a need for this freedom? Are they always on top of you?"
She lowered her gaze slightly and added with a half-smile.
In a way, I understand... even though I love my family, I feel the need to get away for a while. Especially from my little brothers, who have become too clingy lately.

When she asked her about the House, she took a moment to think. Her gaze shifted from the book on her lap to the window, then back to Lilith.
"I have no idea," She admitted. "And I don't even know if there really is a 'right home' for me. I don't think I fit into a single definition."

I hesitated for a moment, thinking.
"I'd like to end up somewhere where I feel comfortable, with people who don't judge and who aren't afraid to think differently... or to be different."

She gave her a half-smile, tilting her head slightly.
You said you have no idea where you'll end up... but if you could choose, is there a House you'd like to go to? And if you don't have any ideas either, we can ask each other questions and 'decide' together on the right house for each other."
As if fate could really be decided at that moment, between the two of them.

Lilith looked up at Kaia, surprised. She didn't expect her to ask about her family. In a way, that was nice. Kaia didn't just nod and changed topic, like most people would have. She actually wanted to know what Lilith meant, what she felt.
"It's, hum, it's complicated." She chuckled, though it wasn't funny. "Are you sure you're ready for it ?"
Trying to look relaxed, she took a deep breath and started:
"My family... Hum, the cliché pure-blood family, you know ? Like everything has to be according to tradition, we have to honor our legacy and everything that goes with it."
Lilith barely held back an eye roll, reciting the words like a lesson learnt by heart.
"And then, my mother, she fell in love with a muggle. Except she didn't expect to get pregnant. Result: me."
With a bitter smile, Lilith concluded:
"I never knew my father, and my mother's parents made sure I never forget he's a muggle. I have to work twice as hard as anyone to prove I'm worthy of the family."
Feeling like she killed the vibe, she forced a smile.

"Anyway ! That doesn't matter. Hum... Houses ? I don't really know where I would go. There's a lot of Slytherins in my family, some Ravenclaws too, but I don't really think I fit the part..."

To be honest, she didn't felt like she could belong anywhere.

When Lilith had finished speaking, Kaia was silent. Not because she didn’t know what to say, but because she hadn’t expected her to open up so much. Not everyone would have done that. It made her wonder if, maybe, she wasn’t the only one who felt a bit out of place.

«You know what?» she said at last, with half a smile. «I think you’re very brave to say it so frankly, like it is. If I were you, I would have pretended everything was all right»

She shrugged, looking at her in a more relaxed way. «I don’t know what it’s like to grow up in a family like yours... but I do know what it's like to feel like you can’t be anything but a certain way. With my parents, it’s not a matter of blood or traditions, but... sometimes I feel like they only see me as the older sister who has to set an example. And believe me, it’s a role that doesn’t fit me very well.»

She smiled slightly, almost in a conspirational way.
Maybe that’s what Hogwarts is: a place where people can stop being what they’ve been expected to be and try and find out who they really are.
She let the topic of the Houses come around in its own time.

«Truly, there is no right or wrong House. But I would like to end up at a place where people want to know me as me. Not because of my last name, not because of my title, not because of my place in the family.»

She glanced at her again, a spark of interest in his eyes.

«What about you? If you didn’t have to think about anyone else, if it was just your choice... where do you see yourself fitting in? Like I said, you were brave to open up, maybe you’re a Gryffindor.»
