Why Shouldn't I?
Penelope walked into the abandoned bathroom. Why was if abandoned? Why shouldn't she go in there? IF it was so forbidding, why wasn't someone doing something about it? If no one really cared, neither did she. She walked in, just explore. The mirrors were all cracked and stained, and the toilets were grimy and dirty.
What happened in here? she thought. It must've been pretty awkward to be the student who ruined this lavatory. Especially because it still hadn't been fixed. Penelope decided that since it was deserted, she look around for a little while. Everything in there was cracked, grimy, and slimy. The floor was wet, and the toilets made a strange noise almost every time you look into one of them. Perhaps, it is cursed. The toilets and sinks are all alive, and it is abandoned because someone realized this and somehow knew the toilets were watching them! Penelope thought excitedly. She took out her wand, and poked the sink a few times. It was dissapointing. There's still more to do. she thought. She looked around. She stomped on the floor. She threw an old book at the walls. Finally, she kicked the toilet. As soon as her shoe came in contact with the toilet, a strange sound came out. Penelope screamed and fell to the floor. The sound was almost human, but not quite. It seemed almost ghostly!
Penelope sat there, frozen with shock. She hoped no one would come in here wondering what the scream was, because if they did, she would be humiliated beyond belief.

Unfortunately for Penelope, someone did hear and came in wondering what all the fuss was about. Jack liked to regularly come by the abandoned toilets for some peace and quiet, but if people or ghosts were screaming there, he would have to find someplace else. Ghosts didn't bother him so much, but that scream had somehow sounded more...alive? Human?
"Uh...everything okay in here?" the redhead asked, glancing around to finally see the Ravenclaw girl on the filthy floor. Guessing she wasn't there by choice, he winced and instinctively held out a hand to help her up. Assisting others wasn't usually something he chose to do unless there was some merit in it for him, but as he had acted without thinking, he could hardly take back his hand after the fact. Besides, just because he acted friendly didn't make him friendly. What did it matter if she made him out to be kinder than he was? She would certainly find out the truth soon enough.
"I thought I heard a scream. Was that you?" His tone of voice combined with his small smirk colored his words to seem more amused than concerned. At least that much he was comfortable being honest about.

"Oh no!" thought Penelope as she heard someone walking down the hall. A boy walked in, and he had bright red hair with streaks of brown and blonde. He glanced around and said, "Uh...everything okay in here?" The boy winced for some unknown reason and extended his hand. Penelope flushed and said,"I just saw a ghost... I know it sounds dumb... the bathroom had to be abandoned for some reason. I wanted to know why. I got a little spooked." She took the boys' hand and stood. "I heard a scream, was that you?"
"Yes, unfortunately. I tend to scream when a ghost pops out at me." She realized that sounded a little harsh, so she added, "What I mean is, I didn't know ghosts where real. Now, I do." she brushed off her robes and fixed her hair. "I'm Penelope. What's your name?" She extended out her hand for the boy to shake. "So.. Slytherin? Meet any good snakes?" She joked. Penelope looked around. Her reflection in the cracked and stained mirrors was pale and still scared-looking. She closed her eyes tight for a minute. This whole situation was a little awkward, but the fact that she looked like a ghost her self was even more humiliating.

"I don't think that's dumb," Jack told her, looking about as if to watch for ghosts that might decide to sneak up on him as well. "I'd probably have done the same thing. Still weird to me that ghosts just roam the school and no one cares."
He sneered at her comment about screaming when ghosts pop out at her. "What do you mean, you didn't know ghosts were real? Didn't you see them in the Great Hall during the first night everyone came to Hogwarts? There's one for each house. No clue why, though." Waving a hand, he added, "I guess it could have been easy to miss them since there was so much to take in. Especially for a first-year."
"Hello, Pen," he answered with a crooked smile, shaking her offered hand vigorously. "I'm Jack. And...kinda. I've met a very snake-like dormmate. What about you?" Jack wanted to know, his tone playful. "Meet any good eagles?"
He followed her gaze when he noticed her looking in a mirror before she closed her eyes. "What's the matter? Don't like your reflection?" The boy went over and tapped one of the reflected Penelopes on the glass. "Or do they make you think another ghost is going to pop out to get you?"
Looking thoughtful, he mused aloud, "I wonder what it's like to be one. It must really suck to have unfinished business. But maybe the ones here at Hogwarts stay on purpose. It does seem to get pretty interesting around here. I probably wouldn't mind watching the shenanigans that go on in this school year after year."

"I don't think that's dumb," Jack told her, he looked around. "I'd probably have done the same thing. Still weird to me that ghosts just roam the school and no one cares." Penelope nodded, and then he said, "I heard a scream, was that you?"
Penelope responded, and admitted to the boy that she had never seen a ghost, to even known they were real. "What do you mean, you didn't know ghosts were real? Didn't you seem then in the Great Hall during the first night everyone came to Hogwarts? There's one for each house. No clue why, though. I guess it could have been easy to miss them since there was so much to take in. Especially for a first-year."
"Well, I was mostly focused on my book. I was almost done, and I was determined not to be noticed. I don't know if you saw me, but I fell off the stool before the sorting hat was put on my head. I was super humiliated." She smiled as she told her story, because she didn't mind now. It had been a long time since then, and falling off a stool where the least of her worries.
The boy shook her hand, and her whole body shook. This boy sure seemed a handful. At his snake comment Penelope laughed then said,"No, no. I haven't really met anyone from my own house. I've met a Hufflepuff, a Gryffindor, and now two Slytherins. I know, I haven't really put myself out there, but in my common room everyone is having their own private conversations, and in my dorm, I'm either doing homework, reading, or asleep." She said.
"What's the matter? Don't like your reflection?" He tapped the nearest mirror. "Or do they make you think another ghost is going to pop out to get you?"
"No! It's just ever since... well for awhile now I've always looked a little haunted. I have huge circles under my eyes, and I'm always so pale." She said. Why did this have to come up again. It seemed every time she was having a conversation with someone, her late parents would come up. In the library, in the study room, in her letters to Paris, everything! Everything would always end in sadness. Was that how the world was supposed to be? No happily ever for this Alexander over here, while William buys himself and apartment and gets a girlfriend? It was not fair.
She then realized what was happening. This was the same thing that happened with Selim! The subjects of families had come up, and then she had gotten angry. Was this what grief was? She was so distracted she didn't notice Jack had started talking. He was saying, It does seem to get pretty interesting around here. I probably wouldn't mind watching the shenanigans that go on in this school year after year."
"Yes! You mean if you were a ghost... yes! I agree. Totally." She said. She paused, then added, "I'm sorry, this question is a little off-topic, but why is your hair so many different colors? She laughed a little at her completely off-topic question.

"Oh...yeah, I probably would have been too humiliated to notice anything else either if that had happened to me," Jack chuckled lightly. "But on the bright side, since it happened at the beginning of the year, nobody probably remembers it now. And even if they do, they likely won't realize that was you."
When the girl explained that she had met two Slytherins already, the redhead's brows rose. "Really? Do you remember their names?" He wondered if he might have known who she was talking about since he tried to pay pretty close attention to his fellow Slytherin. Not that he had met a whole lot, but that didn't mean he wouldn't have known them by name. "I mostly just seem to run into Gryffindor around here. Might have something to do with that weird Gryffindor-Slytherin rivalry thing I keep hearing about."
Tilting his head curiously, he asked, "Why haven't you tried to meet others from your own house? Don't like them? Or are all of them busy doing their own stuff like homework and reading and sleeping like you are?" He supposed he had heard that Ravenclaws were a solitary lot, but since he had met less of them so far than any other house, he hadn't wanted to buy into the stereotypes and assume things before he learned more about them.
Penelope's description of herself caused Jack to sneer slightly. "Oh...yeah. Sounds like my dormmate. The snake-like one I mentioned. He's really pale, too, and I've seen him put on make-up to hide the circles under his eyes because he has insomnia. He spends the majority of most nights reading down in our Common Room. Maybe you two would get along - like as reading night owl buddies or something."
The question about his hair caught him slightly off-guard and the boy laughed. "Oh - you mean my highlights? I thought it might be fun. There are so many gingers around here, I guess I just kinda wanted to stand out a little, you know? But not too much, like those people with green or blue hair. So I picked more natural colors." Grinning, he grabbed a lock of his front bangs to examine as he asked, "Why, do you think it looks stupid? Be honest."

"I hope so." said Penelope not unkindly.
When Jack asked which Slytherins she had met, she responded with, "You are one of them, I have seen you around quite a bit, and Selim. Selim Faust. Can you-erm- not mention me to him. I walked out on him when we were having a conversation. I got overwhelmed, it was right after my parents died." said Penelope. She shocked herself at being able to admit that so easily.
"Why haven't you tried to meet others from your own house? Don't like them? Or are all of them busy doing their own stuff like homework and reading and sleeping like you are?" asked Jack after she told him she didn't know any other Ravenclaws.
"Well, our common room is very focused-feeling, unless there's a party going on, and in my dorm I have the bed in the corner, I guess people think of me as sort of a loner. Now that I think about it, I have met someone from my house! There name is Mezryn Slate, and talk to them sometimes. Not lately though, she has an earlier 'bedtime' that I do." she said with air quotes.

"Oh, okay. Is it true that you get giant fishtanks across from your beds? I've heard that, but I don't know what to believe. There are so many rumors going around!" said Penelope.
After he talked about his hair, Penelope said, "No! You don't look stupid! It looks nice... I mean you look nice... I mean it compliments your face... not that I'm looking at your face! I just mean it doesn't look stupid." Penelope said awkwardly. "God, that did not come out right." said Penelope more to herself that to Jack. She leaned against a nearby sink, and then pushed herself so she was sitting on it now. This was the best conversation she had had since she talked to Selim in the library.

The mention of Selim Faust caused Jack to throw back his head and laugh. "Fangs? That's the pale, snake-like dormmate I've been talking about all this time! The one who has insomnia and stays up reading like you and wears make-up. You walked out on a conversation with him?" The redhead's laughter continued until Penelope's words sunk in and he realized what she had said about her parents having died. At once it ceased and he turned to stare at her. "Your...your parents died?"
If she was a first-year like him and she had only recently met Selim at Hogwarts, her parents must have recently passed away themselves. Jack couldn't have even begun to imagine what that must have been like. No wonder the girl had been awkward about the existence of ghosts.
He leaned back against one of the sinks, continuing to listen to the girl talk, but only really able to half-listen. His mind was still stuck on her parents and the millions of questions that had suddenly sprung up around them. Did he dare ask? Did he have any right to?
The question about the giant fishtanks reminded him not to act so obviously about what he was thinking and he managed to force a weak laugh. "Heh...nah. No fish tanks that I've heard of or seen yet. But since Slytherin's element is water, there are a lot of water-themed features that might have started the fishtank rumors. Like since we're in the dungeons and they extend partway under the lake, we get a nice underwater view from our Common Room. And I hear one of the three boys' dormitories has a waterfall in it, but I'm not in that one, so I can't say for sure."
The unexpected compliments also pulled Jack out of his reverie regarding Penelope's parents. He looked away, flattered and grinning with embarrassment. "Yeah? Well, thanks. And don't worry." He reached out to playfully ruffle the brunette's hair. "I know what you meant. Your face doesn't look stupid either," he teased.
He pushed off one of the sinks as she got up onto it, his thoughts turning serious again. At long last, he asked, "Do you, uh...do you want me to talk to Fangs for you? I'm sure if he knew what you had been going through, he'd understand."

"Yes, and he was very nice. You should try to get to know him." Said Penelope defensively. Selim had been her first friend at Hogwarts, she felt entitled to defend him.
"Your parents are dead?" the boy asked.
"Yes, unfortunately. Dad was hurrying home for the holidays and fell off his broom. Mum was shocked. She died hours later." said Penelope plainly. She didn't want to make a big deal out of it, but if she was ever going to see this boy ever again, it would be pretty awkward to just randomly tell him. She knew this was what she had to do.

"Oh, alright. Just wondering." said Penelope thoughtfully. A waterfall in a dorm? That was interesting. She'd have to learn more about that.

"It's alright, but thank you. But... can you give this to him for me? It's a Christmas present. I'm sure he'll be glad to have more books." Said Penelope. She pulled a wrapped box out with a bow and handed it to Jack. It was a college-level science book, and a muggle science kit with beakers and such. Penelope had asked William to buy it for her, and she had planned to give it to Selim the whole time. There was also a note that read:

Jack snorted at Penelope's comment regarding Selim. "Eagle, I'm betting I know Fangs a lot better than you do," he chuckled. "We do share a dorm, after all. And 'niceness' is subjective. Just because someone might seem nice to you doesn't mean they are." He wasn't sure why she seemed to be trying to defend Selim, though, since Jack didn't think he'd said anything negative about the raven-haired young man. At least not negative by his standards. "I'm curious now, though...what did he do or say that makes you say he's nice?"
He stared at the girl in consternation as she described the death of her parents, not sure he was buying it. "Your dad...fell off his broom," he repeated slowly. "And your mom...died of the shock from finding out that your dad died...?" Jack supposed he could understand if Penelope was making up a story because she didn't want to discuss the truth, but if that was the case, she could have at least come up with something more convincing.
Blinking at the girl's request, he accepted the box with the bow and the note. Smirking, he asked, "What is in this? It's kinda heavy. Am I not allowed to read the note?" Then, his grin broadening, Jack added, "This is quite a lot for someone you just met once. Are you sweet on him?"
