The Granian Derby was the first summer event Aiden had bothered to show up for. It was obviously not the first time he saw a horse. Just two days ago, he’d been up to his knees in mud and manure, mucking out stalls at the local barn. Most of his summer had passed like that: trail rides through overgrown fields, brushing burrs from tangled manes, the steady companionship of the black gelding he rode more than he talked to anyone. Safe to say, he knew horses. However, this, was different. Unless you counted watching derbies on the telly while his dad shouted at the screen and lost what little money he had—this was Aiden’s first real one.

The Quidditch stadium was huge, crowded with wizards and witches in flamboyant outfit. Most of them completely outrageous. Some of these outfits he couldn’t help but raise a mental eyebrow at… And he thought his hat was bad. Whether the absurd hat thing was tradition or some kind of elaborate joke, Aiden couldn’t say. Probably both. One thing was for sure, that if wearing a horrendously ugly hat was mandatory, this would be his first - and last derby.

Either way, he’d be damned if he was going to make one himself. He’d settled for buying something off a rack—a towering, spiraling thing that made him look halfway between a lunatic and a lost wizard. A large feather was sticking out like he randomly plucked it off of an eagle and stuck it to his hat. As if it wasn’t eye-catching enough, that would do it. The only thing that was good about it was the color: black. The fact that he didn’t absolutely loathe himself in it was more than he’d expected. Seeing others looking even worse than him, helped. But he was still feeling uncomfortable and not like himself.

Not only was it his first live derby; it was the first time he saw Granian horses. Had never heard about them until today, in fact. Winged horses. From where he stood in line to the betting station, watching the horses being pampered and prepare for the race, they looked almost ordinary. Until they moved and their wings unfurled. Reaching the front of the line, he turned his fickle attention back to the woman working the stand. She wanted to hand him a few tickets for his hat, and to know who he was betting on. Aiden tried to recall the names he’d read previously. It was his first gamble in his life. He didn’t know how to think smart. Based on how many times his dad had screamed about it, there probably wasn’t a smart way. Just about how more or less money you were throwing down the drain.

Aiden had picked his horse though. The green one, not because he expected it to win its first race, but for good luck. He didn’t expect to get his money back, anyway. It was just for fun. ”Vitamixin' It Up, please.”

Stuffing his tickets down the pockets of his trousers, Aiden moved towards the bleachers to find a good seat. It was too optimistic to assume he’d find a place where he wouldn’t have to bump shoulders with another visitor, but if he was lucky, he’d at least get a clear view of the horses.

terrible presence

The small boy's demeanour immediately made Livia feel far more comfortable in the otherwise overwhelming crowd. His immediate smile, the way he stood quickly, the way he held himself like any proper wizard might... Well, she hadn't encountered anyone quite like him at the camp so far, and she doubted she would. She suppressed a pleased grin when he seemed surprised she liked his attire; instead, she nodded and offered him a close-lipped smile.

His next words served to increase his impressiveness; Livia's eyes widened, and she scrutinised his appearance further. '...Really?' she murmured, her gaze catching on the intricacy of the flowers and metal adornments on his hat, on the specific complement of the green against the white and black. Her question was not in disbelief at all, but rather astonishment. 'And you contracted a goblin company to craft it for you? A beautiful design combined with goblin craftsmanship...' Despite her perhaps understated outward reaction to his statement, the undercurrent of her tone of voice held warmth, and she couldn't have hidden her awe even if she'd tried—and she hadn't. '...Very impressive.'

The boy's adherence to social custom was something she had expected among other students but had sorely lacked in presence among them. A tentative smile crossed Livia's lips at the boy's—Harvey's, or Mr Barrows's—taking of her hand, and she easily allowed the kiss. Such formalities were so much easier to lean into and understand than the unreasonable attitudes of many of the other students. 'Likewise,', she said, only for her smile to further when, after meeting Harvey's gaze, she registered the compliment. It was once again a formality, and, of course, once again one that was much welcomed.

'Thank you,' she said warmly, moving to fold her hands in front of her unless she would be stopped. 'Truly a high compliment. The dress is by Bogomolov and Company,' she answered. The way she pronounced Bogomolov would suggest a familiarity with the Russian language. 'The hat, though... technically, it is of French make, but nothing too special—de la Chance, I believe. I did the ribbons and feathers myself, as a derby requires something a bit more glamorous.'

A bit more might have escaped her if she'd had time, but Harvey would still be able to discern a small glimmer in her eyes and slight wrinkling around them, hinting at genuine excitement and pleasure over simple performance. This only increased when her smile widened, and she glanced towards Harvey before gesturing at the course ahead. 'Oh, look! There they go.'

The amusement present in her expression only faded when she stared out between various people, craning her neck to get a good look at the horses and their jockeys. It only momentarily occurred to Livia that Harvey would likely not have an easy time viewing the equestrian escapades; however, after ascertaining that Vitamixin' It Up was not in the lead, Livia turned her attention from the racecourse and back to her companion. 'Somehow I expected a bit more. The pristine appearances of all of the entertainment-seekers, however...' She let her voice trail off, once again offering Harvey a small smile, this time one that could be called somewhat conspiratorial in nature. '...well, those do not disappoint.'

Her gaze drifted lazily to Harvey's table, where some refreshments sat. That he had acquired them intrigued her, especially as she assumed neither of them had the desire to eat while at this event. To have something knocked over by some insolent passerby, to ruin an otherwise stunning outfit, to be humiliated in front of such a largely-proper crowd... the idea unnerved her. Livia looked back to Harvey and nodded appreciatively. 'It's truly wonderful to finally come across someone as decorous as you. I, for one, am pleased.' She would not say more just yet, but she hoped the feeling was mutual—despite meeting by chance at this derby, Livia found herself rather enchanted by the possibility of getting to know Harvey Barrows better. He was, most assuredly, a specimen with which she decided she ought to try to acquaint herself properly. The cordiality present in her soft voice would suggest that she already thought of the young Barrows fondly and that further interaction was most welcomed.

Aly nearly jumped at the sound of her tentmate's voice; she'd barely just sat down, so how had Manu arrived so quickly?? Still, the Ravenclaw would recognise that accent anywhere, and she looked over at her friend from Castelobruxo just as the other girl sat down, giving her a wide smile, the fine line between the cooling shade from the brim of her wide blue hat and the brilliant, hot sunlight from above falling just below her lips. "Hey! Lear's ears, you got here fast. Did you run from the tent or are my legs just that short?"

The Brazilian pointing out her tattoos didn't escape her notice, though, and Aly beamed with pride at them, pulling the left part of her ruffled powder-blue off-the-shoulder dress slightly further down her pale, freckled arm to truly expose her collarbone and shoulder where the jewel-blue butterflies flickered. "Eee! You like them? Yes, I just got them last month with Peri - the white-haired one from the tent. Went to visit him in Plymouth and, lo and behold, we went and got tattoos together! His is his Patronus - that design on his arm, you might've seen it?" Whether Manu nodded or shook her head, signaling yes or no, Aly didn't care, blazing on in her excited babble: "And so I got my Patronus too - I always thought they were pretty ever since you showed me one, and I suppose my subconscious thought so, too. Did I not tell you that the blue morpho had turned out to be my Patronus?"

After Manu's shrug of a response, Aly shrugged in mirroring. "My mistake, then. And hey - oh, another secret for you." She leaned in, lowering her voice to a whisper only her foreign friend could hear. "The other day I finished the Animagus ritual, too, and it's my Animagus form as well. You know, the animal I can turn into? I think last I wrote to you I told you I was thinking of completing this ritual, and now it's all done and quite thrilling. I'll show you after the race so long as you promise to be gentle - I fear my wings are very fragile!"

And with that, the horses were off with a shot - but it was a false start! Aly gasped and leaned forward as the Granians and their shaken riders reset, the air thick with capitalism and advertisements, and with a second explosion they finally blasted off down the first stretch. The Ravenclaw couldn't help herself but whoop - how exciting this all was! "Go, Nimble Nimbus!" she called out, the thrill of the race positively, well, racing through her. Her chosen steed wasn't doing too bad - not in the top three, but not in the bottom three, either. A solid middle start didn't seem terrible, but then again, she'd never seen a race quite like this. Who was she to judge?

2025 Summer Camp  Granian Derby  OPEN
@Livia Machavariani
This chance meeting was proving to be the most exciting of the summer so far. There was something about this Livia that stoked something within Harvey. A hint of shadow just underneath the prim and proper exterior that he found attractive. It could have set him on edge and he was sure that if she wanted to she could have been quite intimidating, but for now it was matching something within him that made him feel a quick bond. It was not only her nature that drew him in. There was also the way she carried herself that made him feel just a little less alone in the wide world that was the wizarding community. Elegance and class was first and foremost and while she would most likely never boast about her position in society the air about her spoke volumes. Perhaps young Harvey had just met his equal?

Harvey tried his best not to become too excited when she showed genuine interest in his attire. A gentleman keeps a level head after all, but finally he was talking with someone who also appreciated craftsmanship. "Yes, they done work for my grandfather on many occasions, so it was a natural fit. While my grandfather possesses many skills, the eye for fashion is not one of them I'm afraid." An understatement really. Larnak looked to pomp and frill as merely a waste of hard earned galleons, but Harvey always thought the old goblin failed to see the subtle flex in fashion. The way you clothed yourself could speak volumes to those that knew what to look for and it weeded out the unnecessary ones who didn't. "So, when he finally agreed to allow me to contract this outfit, I jumped at the chance. I'm thrilled that you like it. Not everyone appreciates the finer things." Harvey cast a quick glance around them. The eye sores spoke for themselves.

The formal introduction was just icing on the cake. Harvey had met one other witch so far that had displayed such a level of class, but the wizards he knew mostly ran around like rabid dogs. It was like a breath of fresh air to say the least. The boy listened closely as Livia mentioned the house in which her dress was made. In truth, he was just a beginner in magical fashion, so he committed the name to memory and would search it out as soon as possible. It did sound Russian by the inflection she put on the word and he noted her familiarity with the pronunciation. A worldly witch indeed and only made her that much more interesting. "It sounds like you are familiar with the company. Does your family have connections in Russia? Assuming I've not mistaken the name." Harvey's eyes brightened more when she spoke of her hat. Not only French in make, but the ribbon and feather work was done by her hand. "Marvelous. You've done an excellent job. Are you interested in the craft? I'd love someone to compare sketches with?"

Livia's gaze turned and brightened when the racing began and Harvey too swerved his head like a snake trying to catch a glimpse in between the people. The high of the anticipation would diminish quite a bit as the horse he bet on did not perform right out of the gate. All part of gambling he supposed and not at all intrigued by it. However, Livia's word would draw him back to the crowd and that was something they could bth be excited for. "Just a bit lackluster. I'm afraid I must agree. The people watching does make up for it in spades though. I must admit it does stoke a rather...competitive streak in me. I'm not one to be outdone." Harvey could be conspiratorial and he hoped she shared in that bit of nature as they exchanged a meaningful smile.

The food and beverage would remain untouched on the table nearby. Harvey had seen plenty of people at his grandfather's gatherings do much the same. The glass of champagne was just a part of the ensemble, so he followed suit. When their gaze met again Harvey would let a genuine smile cross his face. A rarity as the one he carried was almost always practiced, but her compliment made him feel like he just may have made a true friend. "Oh! I couldn't be more pleased as well. I had high hopes that I may meet someone of your stock here and this event has not disappointed in the least." He would push the subject further and while he could be getting ahead of himself, the boy was sure the feeling of connection was mutual. "I am very happy with my outfit, but I think that it is you that has stolen the show. You wouldn't consider..." This was a bit forward, but as gentlemanly and cordial as Harvey could be, he was not one to shy away from what he wanted. "Modeling for me sometime?" His mind's eye was already churning with fabrics and colors that would look so elegant on her.

Eight breathtaking creatures raced around the quidditch pitch. As Rose and her young companion entered, the redhead's breath would hitch a little just seeing them. Rose loved nearly all magical creatures- well, truthfully, Rose loved nearly all creatures in general- and the ones she didn't love, she was equally fascinated with. Rose grew quiet a moment, her conversation with Avis pausing as she was momentarily entranced by the winged horses. They were just such elegant creatures, and yet each of them was distinctly different, sporting different coat colors and tack. Rose couldn't believe she was planning on missing this event.

"You know, I've never really understood betting on derbies, but I definitely understand why someone would want to go to one," Rose admitted. But she needed to focus.

Though most of the stadium was watching the eight granians, Rose and Avis were looking for an entirely different creature. The tentmates had both realized that Rose's cat, Chaska, was not in their tent, and after a quick search of the tent (stump? Tent was a loose word), decided they should probably go looking for her. Rose knew that Chaska was entirely able to take care of herself, but she also knew that Chaska was entirely able to cause trouble or be annoying. The fact that it was raining definitely ruled out the possibility of her being outside, due to the fact that Chaska would never let her precious fur get wet.

"I don't see her, do you?" she asked Avis. Rose appreciated the young girl's willingness to help her find Chaska. It was a very kind thing to do, and the redhead could see why Mylo would want to be friends with her. "Maybe she's by the food?" Rose suggested, starting to walk that way as her eyes scanned the ground. Rose wouldn't put it past the silver cat to beg for food.

"Do you have any pets, Avis?" she asked. "Any that are mischievous enough to run off?"

Avis glanced up at the pause in conversation and Rose's subtle gasp as they entered the derby area. She followed the older girl's gaze to the magnificent granians and for a moment, the young Ravenclaw was just as entranced. Living on the sea cliffs of eastern Ireland, Avis had seen her fair share of pesky bowtruckles, will-o'-the-wisps and (she swears) the tail of a merperson playing amongst the rocky waves once, but never anything as breathtaking a magical creature as these. A flurry of massive feathered wings flashed by, sweat and foam shining off multi-colored backs like diamonds glinting through the cloud cover overhead. Avis suddenly felt insubstantially small.

Rose's voice broke the moment of awe and Avis nodded along dumbly. She hadn't faintest idea on how derby betting (or any kind of betting) worked but she heartily agreed with the Gryffindor's statement.

The purpose of their visit popped back into Avis' head as quickly as it had left it moments before and she suddenly found herself squinting through the forest of legs and skirts milling about the derby's spectator areas. Alas, any glance of silver fur eluded her scan and she shook her head, her mouth forming a grim line.

"No luck here," she sighed. "But, yeah that's a good thought. Don't know where else she'd go in this mess," Avis said, keeping her eyes peeled for the friendly wee beastie. She'd met Chaska when she'd first arrived to camp the other week and the girl had taken an instant liking to the cat. She seemed very capable and strangely optimistic for her particular species, so Avis wasn't too worried, but if Rose felt they needed to look for her, she was going to join the search!

The two approached the tables lined with all sorts of goodies and Avis was distracted for moment by the blueberry muffins sitting delicately (and quite literally) on a silver platter. She nicked one with a grin and took an absentminded bite as she listened to Rose's question.

"Quigley," she muttered, but not without a note of fondness. It was a known fact between her and Maisie that he was a madman...er...cat. "He's insane," Avis said simply, taking another bite. Her next words were muffled by muffin. "The cat's always running off and getting into trouble. Brought a doxie back to the common room in my first year once. It took three of us and a prefect to fend it off," she rambled. She didn't mention the time he'd eaten all her socks on a whim. And seemingly planned an attack on another Ravenclaw's owl. Avis grimaced. She loved him despite the flaws. They were a well-paired duo, her mam always said.

Popping the last of the muffin into her mouth and finishing her look around the outside of the table, Avis decided to take a gander underneath. "Gonna look down here," she mentioned to Rose as she unceremoniously ducked under the table. A flash of silver immediately met her searching gaze and Avis let out an involuntary gasp. She was making direct eye contact with Chaska!

"Rose! She's under—" the girl started, but it was already too late. The cat dashed away with whatever bit of food she'd managed to scavenge out of someone's hand. Probably a muffin, Avis thought.

2025 Summer Camp  Granian Derby  OPEN

When Evony found out about the Granian Derby being held at the Quidditch Stadium, she was fairly excited about going. Unfortunately, she didn’t have anyone to go with, and she didn’t have anything to wear. She didn’t have much money, but she had enough to buy an old, dark green hat. She cleaned it up and found a black ribbon to tie around it, into a bow. She had some torn lace from a curtain over her bed that she cut and sewed onto the edge of the hat, just to give it a bit more elegant flair. She didn’t consider herself very creative, but she was quite proud of her hat. Well… Derby Day came (along with a light rain), and she got into one of her nicest dresses and placed the hat on her head. However, as she headed to the stadium, she noticed everyone else’s hats were much more decorated and ornate… and then, like in a nightmare, a girl pointed to her hat and said it looked like she was going to a funeral; “THAT is not a derby hat.”

Evony blushed so hard, she likely looked like Christmas. But she was not one to be shamed. She would just have to improve it before she entered the stadium… but how? She looked around and a striking black Dahlia flower caught her eye. She snatched it, along with some sprigs of various foliage, and tucked them into the black ribbon. Beautiful! But perhaps still too plain. She watched as others passed by, some frivolously covering their head with their hands and others more effectively using an umbrella charm, all were walking quickly to get out of the rain, and Evony stood and examined their hats. Hm, many of them seemed to have centerpieces (“statement” pieces? brooches?). She would need something like this. She poked around and tried to find a nice, smooth, pretty-looking rock… No, they all looked stupid. And then: Ah! What was this, tucked under a bush? It was a crow’s skull! With a bit of detachment and a rub for shine, it looked decent enough. She looped and attached it to the front of the bow on the hat.

She admired the (wet) hat. The additions didn’t do much for the “funeral” look, but it was certainly more ornate! She glanced at the time and did a double take. Oh no! She was late! She carefully pulled the hat onto her head and rushed toward the stadium. She was very thankful to be greeted by a lovely red-haired witch and a delightful hot-air charm.

A figure drifts into the scene like a whisper on the breeze.

Fashionably late was the almost the perfect expression to describe her.

She planned quite a bit for this. Fashion wasn't her strong suit but she does love it to bits.

Kanae'd showed up to the derby in a spectacle. It was ethereal in a way -- "magical" as some muggles would call it but they were already in a world of magic. The inspiration was quite obvious, the shape of the skirt and hat gave it away. Jellyfish with a bit of cosmic stuff all mashed together.

Glancing side to side, Kanae noticed the majority having rather odd vintage looking hats, not that it was a bad thing.

She didn't like being the center of attention but the polarity of the other styles to her own were quite obvious. Sighing, she went near the front with her opera glasses to see the race better. It suited her entire ensemble.

Back to her outfit, she appeared in a 2 piece set and of course, a hat. It was like a celestial bloom of pale blue that slighty glowed with quiet magic. The skirt was full and buoyant, making it seem to float as if it defied gravity (reference in the big 25 HELP-). The hat was wide and soft-edged, arcs like a halo of moonlight. Tiny stars cling to her like blessings and fall endlessly in gentle showers.

When she glides across the floor, the world hushes. Her silhouette is streaked with trails of stars, each motion writing poetry across dark spaces.

She stood as if she was waiting for someone. But who?

The pair moved towards the food tents, and Avis grabbed a blueberry muffin from one of the tents. Rose, wishing she had done the same, kept scanning the crowd for a glimpse of silvery fluff.

"Quigley?" Rose echoed, raising an eyebrow. A mix of irritation and affection seemed to lie under the Ravenclaw's voice, and Rose couldn't help but suppress a smile thinking of the duo. The Ravenclaw explained that her cat was insane. "How come he can catch a doxy but it took four of you to fend it off?" she teased. A quick knockback jinx usually did the trick with doxies, from what Rose could remember, but maybe more chaos was caused than the simple presence of the small creature.

Cats could be like that- always causing trouble, always off doing their own thing. They each had their own huge personality, and that's what Rose liked best about creatures. They were kind of like people, except less complex and sometimes easier to read. Rose was glad that Chaska was never the type to cause too much trouble, but she was pretty sure it was just because the silver siberian simply couldn't be bothered. She would much rather take a nap than chase a doxy, even more so because the biting fairies weren't exactly beautiful to look at.

"You know, some people thought Albus Dumbledore was mad. Maybe Quigley's secretly a genius," she mused.

The redhead considered turning into her feline form to look for Chaska. It could be easier, as she would be able to smell and hear better and slip through the crowd. On the other hand, this was a very public place and there were people everywhere. The fact that Rose was an animagus wasn't really a secret- she had told a few people and a couple had seen her transform- but it wasn't something she wanted the entire school to know. There was something comforting about turning into a cat and nobody knowing who she was. She could walk through the halls during the day or at night with nobody giving a second glance, just assuming she was just another pet. The redhead didn't abuse it too much (she was too much of a rule follower to break curfew for no reason), but it was always nice to have as an option. She always knew that, if she really wanted to, she could practically disappear.

So ultimately, she decided against it, sticking by her new friend as they looked together. Avis looked under a table.

"Rose! She's under-"

Rose ducked down next to Avis, looking under the table, but the cat had already slipped away. Usually, Chaska liked being around people, especially those she knew, so it was weird for her to run from Avis like that. Though Rose wouldn't be surprised if she felt overwhelmed in this huge place with all these people. She was just a little kitty, after all.

Or maybe she was just happy at the amount of food she could mooch off of the tables. That was also likely. Rose stood up. "She has to be near here, then," she said, mostly to herself. Rose scanned the table, and then spied her.

The silver cat had somehow climbed the table, and was daintily stepping in between plates of food, her eyes fixated on a glistening platter of sausages. Rose couldn't help but giggle a little at the sight of the feline so determined. But it would probably be a good idea to stop her before she got her fur on all the food or got there and ate all the sausages. "I think I found her," Rose said, weaving through the crowd to scoop Chaska off the table. The cat protested with a loud meow, and Rose rolled her eyes. "Relax, you can have a sausage." She grabbed a small sausage off the table and fed it to her with one hand, cradling her with the other. Rose looked to Avis as the cat munched on her prize. "I don't even think I could be mad at her if I tried," she laughed. "Thanks again for your help, Avis."

Rose looked around, catching sight again of the huge winged horses. "Would you maybe want to grab some food and watch the derby?" Her eyes sparkled. "I may need to try one of those muffins- you practically inhaled yours."

Chaska perched her paws on Rose's shoulder, supported by one of her hands, as Rose made a plate of some food with the other. The feline's ears flicked around as she surveyed the field, now at a much better vantage point. "So how did you meet Mylo?" Rose asked Avis, curious about how she knew their mutual friend.

Asara twirled around in front of the talking mirror.

"Very fancy deary. All you need is a beehive."

Asara poked her toungue out at it and squished her cheeks into a funny face, giggling at the mirrors snarky returns. Her hat toppled a little, slipping to the slide, before it was quickly righted. Her Ma shook her head as she gently pinned it into place.

"The mirror's got a point, little dandelion. Yer a walking florist."

"Yup! Isn't it great!"

Asara tilted her head back and forth, as much as her mother's firm grip allowed. Noise roared outside the rest tent. They were taking a break from the crowd while they waited until the Derby started. Her Pa was making a couple last minute bets and grabbing them snacks while she and Ma tidied themselves up for the fashion show.

Her parents had both been excited for the Derby since it was the only part made especially for the adults. All the other events were made for the kids and the flocks matched. Her Pa, Callum, loved the races and he was treating himself to a rare bet for the special occasion. Her Ma, Ciara, was more interested in the fashion show, preferring to watch broom races, AFL, or figure skating herself, and she'd decided to participate with her daughter even thugh they'd be judged separately.

"It's a special occasion. It's the last summer before you officially become a Hogwarts student and I won't be fitting into anything nice for much longer.", she'd said. Asara had given in immediately. They'd spent the summer making their outfits together. They'd paid especial attention to Asara's hat.

Ciara had come dressed to the nines in a muggle steampunk outfit, complete with goggles, pirate boots and a cog top hat. She had striped pants with suspenders, a fluttery tanned blouse, a striped vest and big leather trench coat. Her Ma said she found it funny to dress all muggle-like at magical events and fancy dress stuff was especially fun because it could confuse the older Muggleborns too.

Asara decided to be silly with her outfit. She wore one of those funny inflatable halloween costumes that made it look like you were riding a dinosaur. It was a bit hot for summer but after two whole weeks of cleaning the sprite pond she'd successfully convinced her Pa to cast a cooling charm on her for it. Her shirt was from a wonderwoman outfit. She'd tied her hair into two fluffy poofballs near her nape with rainbow scrunchies, painted her nails with moodring paint, stuck on smiley emoji stick-on earrings and practically painted herself all over with glitter body lotion.

But then there was the pride of her and her Mas' work, the pride of the show.

Asara's hat.

It was a straw witch hat with a wonky top that bent and twisted down in a dodgy curl. They'd woven themselves with straw, most of it plain, but also with some naturally died strands woven in. The brim held up a thick wreath, kept aside from the last Yuletide. The cone had the occasional dried flower from her Mamo's pot pourri poked into and held still with glue. The edges of the brim had colourful ribbons from all four of the house hanging in loops like tinsel over eaves. From each of those loops hung a tiny suncatcher prism, small rainbow reflection dancing across the room at Asara's every movement.

She loved it.

"Are my favourite ladies to go?", Callum yelled into the tent from outside. Ciara laughed and pulled Asara along. Asara bounced along in a feigned trot, the dinosaur head bobbing along with her. She bounced off her Pa's legs when she zoomed out.

"We're ready! We're ready! What did you get?"

He held out his winnings with a huge grin.

"All the classics. Salted butter popcorn, chicken sticks, footy pies, peppery flobberworm fries, sparkler pop-rocks and grub balls. We'll grab something proper sweet after the race."

The derby horns started blaring, the last warning before they risked missing their seats.

"Well let's hurry on then,' Her Ma took some of the food haul and pulled Ara along, 'we've got a race to catch.".
