@Lamik Fillestar
Persephone opened her eyes at last.

The sky was darkening, the sun gently setting over the horizon, igniting the sky in burning reds and oranges. She swayed her legs, allowing the water to brush over her skin, sending calming waves throughout her body. She hadn’t felt the comforting sense of water for a long time; she couldn’t deny that she’d missed it more than anything.

There was a small pool in her backyard at home, a gracious gift from her mother for her ninth birthday. Persephone could still hear her mother cheerily talking about reduced trips to the public pool. Since then, swimming was something she'd done every day, a way to rinse away all her worries and concerns. Particularly the arguments. The louder they were, the longer she spent in the water. As of late, she’d been too afraid to even glance at the pool, terrified of the creeping thoughts of her mother.

That couldn’t stop her now.

The wind howled as she allowed the rest of her body to soak in the water, the serenity finally settling against her skin. Persephone knew, of course, that this wasn’t technically allowed, but what did that really matter to her? A detention wasn’t going to kill her, and she wouldn’t even get one if no one found out. Her eyes darted around the grounds and nothing moved except the grass, waving with the breeze. Perfect.

Persephone rolled on her back easily, closing her eyes once again. The beauty of swimming was not in the sight, but in the feeling, the ability to sit and feel the sensation of the water. The feeling of being weightless, a feather floating in the air. Tension is a thing of the past and all that’s left is tranquility, the undiscovered ethereal feeling of simply existing.

Something in the back of her mind, however, told her this wouldn’t last long. Nothing ever did.

Lamik Fillestar wasn't a very big fan of the great lake. From his understanding, the giant body of water contained some pretty terrifying creatures in its depth, and though he had no idea if they could pull him in from the surface, he usually didn't really feel like finding out. Because of this the boys walks usually took place nearer to the Owlery instead, but for some reason, today Lamik had decided to change things up a little. Walking by the shore, Lamik had to admit that he was glad to have made the descision- the Lake was absolutely stunning.

As he looked over the Great Lake, Lamiks train of though was halted when he spotted something far away. "What the..." he said softly, trying to figure out if he want imagining. From what he could tell, someone was in the water. A student, he pressumed. "Hey!" He called out loudly, taking a few steps closer to the shore. "Hey! Get out of the water!" He couldnt really see the girl moving, which was slightly concerning. Hopefully she wasnt in trouble. If she was... well, Lamik would hopefully figure something out. "It isnt safe in there! You need to get out!"

As soon as the tranquility had settled into her pores and her body muscles finally released this strengthening tension, the voice broke her peace and she knew she had never hated a voice more. Once again rolling over and taking a glance around, Persephone realized she had just barely left the bank, gliding through the cool water to rest her arms upon it.

Her emerald eyes traveled up to the boy who had interrupted the one moment of enjoyment she’d had here, and she was sure the burning fire of hatred was apparent in them. The grass underneath her arms was lightly wet now and she was just beginning to shiver when she choked it down and responded.

“Exactly what about a perfectly calm, wave less lake is dangerous to you? Is it just because you’re a coward, lion?” Her smooth voice was taunting, as she winked at him and ducked her head under the water, coming back up with a gentle shake to her hair which was now soaked. A smirk played on her lips.

“How sad, house of the fake brave meets it’s first coward. Going to ask the wizard to grant you some courage, lion?” A small yet maniacal laugh escaped her soft, pink lips and she lifted out of the water slightly.

Persy’s mind was uncontrollably peering back to the last time she had swam: with her mother. Splashing water at each other, dunking, racing…. It was pathetic really, how inane Persy had been. Wordlessly, she promised herself she would never let that same ignorance pull her away from the comfort of reality again. She didn’t know, regardless of whether she would admit it, if she could stand a heartbreak. Again, she decided this nosy boy would not stop her from finally doing one of the few things she loved.

Lamik sighed in relief when he saw that the girl was not, in fact, dead. He had to assume that she was just a first year who either wasn't aware on the ristrictions on swimming, or was ignorant about their reasoning. He was just about to explain what the reasoning was when she spoke up:

“Exactly what about a perfectly calm, wave less lake is dangerous to you? Is it just because you’re a coward, lion?”

She said tauntingly before submerging her head in what Lamik had to assume was an attempt at proving her point. Even though her tone didn't sound too pleasent the boy gave her the benefit of the doubt; maybe he had just misinterpreted. That was, until she called him a coward. Luckily, Lamik was a boy with thick skin. Simple insults rarely ever got to him, especially if they were coming from strangers. Because of this, with a warm, patient smile he sat down on the ground. "There's a difference between bravery and stupidity, you know?" He said, gesturing to himself. "And theres also a difference between bravery and ignorance." This time, he gestured at her. "And if you must know- I appreciate the Wizard of Oz refrence by the way- its dangerous because the lake is full of magical creatures that tend to dislike students swimming in their territory." After a few moments of silence Lamik patted the ground as if inviting her to sit with him.

Persephone’s lips turned down as she rested her arms upon the bank once again, hearing the boy’s voice but not really listening. That is, until he seemed to call her ignorant. She wanted to pipe in then, defend herself, and she opened her mouth to speak when he continued, issuing a useless warning.

The boy sounded as if he were speaking to a child, one that didn’t know right from left. At this, her stomach turned as her chest ignited in an angry flame. He acted as if he were better. Just looking at him she assumed he was slightly older than her, but this meant absolutely nothing. Age never would be a factor in who was superior and who was not, it was based on skill, on depth, on wit! This meant especially zilch from a Gryffindor, house of the fake brave. Sure, maybe he wasn’t scared of perhaps, a bully, but when anxiety and social fears took place, he too was human. He, too, was afraid.

Her voice rang strong, or so it did in her head, when she spoke yet again. “I’m not ignorant, lion. I genuinely just don’t care. But so you’re not sitting there trembling for my safety-” She straightened her arms, lifting the upper half of her body from the cooling water, “I’ll get out while you’re here.”

She watched the boy attentively as he tapped the grass next to him, as if motioning for her to sit. As if. Instead, she leaned against a nearby tree, her arms crossed defensively across her chest. Her forest green eyes trailed to the horizon as the sun shined it’s last bit of light toward the two, and fell out of sight. Without checking, she assumed it was nearing eight o’clock.

“What, exactly, do you want? An award for saving me from absolutely nothing? I applaud you.” She groaned, sarcasm dripping from her words.

Lamik sighed. It was clear that he had not, in fact, misjudged the girl. She really was acting rather unpleasantly, and he simply couldn't figure out why. He hadn't done anything to her, after all, and he really didn't want to think that she simply wasn't a great person. The Gryffindor smiled appreciatively as she got out of the water though, a small "Thank you" escaping his lips. If anyone had asked him, Lamik wouldn't lie- it felt as if a small weight was lifted off of his chest once she finally stepped onto dry land. Any danger that had been present previously was no more.

The Gryffindor couldn't help but chuckle a bit when she asked him about a reward. "Of course not." He said lightheartedly. "I don't want a reward. Mutual respect would be nice though- if that's not too much to ask." Lamik patted the grass beside him once again, this time nodding his head from the girl towards the spot he wanted her to sit on. "Come on- you seem interesting. Let's talk a bit." In reality, Lamik was hoping to find a way to get past whatever tough exterior Persephone was wearing in hopes that the interior would be a bit kinder.

Persephone could not hold back a scoff as he quietly thanked her. Her head wandered away for a moment, and she considered him and his behavior. Who was he, she wondered, to try looking out for her? Sure, he was a year older and more familiar with the place, but Persy had been fine with the idea of being corrected by a prefect or a staff member. Not another child. Let alone a Gryffindor.

As soon as the phrase ‘mutual respect’ came from his mouth, she no longer felt the need to choke back her laugh. “You think you’re owed my respect? That’s just not really how it is. Your age means nothing to me, and that’s the only thing you’ve got above me.” Her words were laced with sourness that she did not dare hide.

Again, the boy patted the grass beside him. Persy shook her head slightly, eyeing him with increasing suspicion. “Why do you want me over there so bad? Can you not bother me just as well from here?” Her green eyes narrowed at him as her collarbone tensed, a sure sign of frustration.

His use of the word interesting caught her off guard, but did not surprise her ever-lasting ego. Obviously it was true, and a shot through the heart signaled that Persephone was overjoyed that someone had finally noticed. No one had to tell her twice that she was different than the others, more unique, original, perfect.

Even if, perhaps, that was not what he meant, he would be mistaken to think her ego wouldn’t take it that way.
