See You Next Fall
Avis practically skidded down the stairs as she yanked herself down to the courtyard. She wasn't really in a hurry - she wasn't ever in a hurry - but Avis was just a runner. Bouncing from one activity to the next to the next, it was her opinion that transition time was simply wasted time, and if one could shorten that time, then they really ought to do so in whatever capacity possible. Even if the next activity was relaxing, as she planned to do now, it still didn't mean she needed to waste time getting to it.
Her satchel had been recently restocked with caramels from Hogsmeade, and she had borrowed a few scattered books from the library the day before, so Avis was ready to finally sit down against a pillar somewhere and enjoy a lazy free time of reading.
As she flew down the hall, she offered a passing nod to a portrait hanging on the wall next to her, and grinned when the old man offered her one in return. A year of watching the portraits and their reaction, and patterns were beginning to show themselves. The distinguished men liked a respectful nod, whilst the ladies liked a smile and a compliment.
As they say, however, no good deed goes unpunished; and as Avis pulled back around from looking at the gentleman, she found herself less than a step away from the stairs that she decided had suddenly spawned there just to make her life miserable, and her run had her practically jumping off the edge. Well. Drats.
Her momentum pulled her down the stairs, though she managed to pull her toes down to spring off of a few of the steps and keep her upright, at least for most of the steps. Unfortunately, the downward force was stronger than her balance, and she tumbled down the last few steps, landing in a tangled heap at the bottom.
Thankfully, nothing had shoved her down the stairs, this time, but it was still an unpleasant memory that had been fished from the depths of her selective memory, and her ears were ringing from the fall. A sharp, stabbing pain battered at her brain, but it was soon overtaken by the growing throbbing in her ankle. Her face twisting up in pain, she grabbed her ankle as if she could squeeze the pain right out.
