One line followed the next. Dark green ink traced thin paths that crossed and disappeared into the cross-stitched padding. Short fur nestled between wool and the outer sleeve lining, gently reminding him of the warmth. Lorenzo sat, lost in thought, in the greenhouse where some classes of Herbology were normally held. The quill with its thin tip pressed to the paper, had fused with him into a single unit.
Behind him, plants stretched and yawned from their pots, while open packets of soil and empty containers had been set out in preparation for a class he did not belong to—or so he assumed. For when Lorenzo had entered this room, he had caught a brief glance and came to the spontaneous conclusion that it couldn’t be part of the first-year curriculum. Most likely, he thought, it was for second-years and more practiced hands than those of clumsy children. Another stroke followed. It marked where the pockets were sewn to the cloth. Lorenzo took a deep breath. The smell of dampness and greenery bothered him surprisingly little. He felt almost hardened against damp air after the trip to that mold-infested shop! At least here, he thought he could be fairly sure that nothing in the room posed a threat to him. Not bodily—and not to his health. With a single dot, he added one of the buttons. Then the Ravenclaw rested an arm on the wooden worktable, set his elbow down, and placed his head into his hand.

Over the past month, the eleven-year-old had made an effort to find a place less frequented than the old library, the common room, or the halls. Since hardly anyone voluntarily chose to sit surrounded by self-moving plants, he had now found it. Aside from the soft cooing of flowers he didn’t know and the gentle rustling of wind outside the glass, it was relatively quiet. Nothing distracted him from the thoughts he otherwise wouldn’t dare to examine. The second button was drawn in its proper place. Slowly, a dreamy smile slid onto his lips. Wherever thoughts of his father lurked, he didn’t want to let them in.
Instead, his pulse circled around that one day at the Diagon Alley. The older boy he’d encountered there, unfortunately wasn’t in the same house. Lorenzo’s brows lowered slightly. He couldn’t quite shake the disappointment over it, no matter how deeply manners had been chiseled into his bones. This made him all the more thankful, thinking there was that no one to witness it. Lorenzo began to sink deeper into his seated posture, slowly tracing a small heart into the inside of a sleeve. He wished more than anything to have it by his side—perhaps draped over his shoulders with the soft fabric against his neck. As if he could extract the feeling of safety from a memory alone, another heart joined the first. The old metal quill pressed into his fingertips.

New year, (not) new Sebastian Drake! He was as gorgeous as always, with that constant new-relationship glow. Which he didn’t know was even a thing until now. Suppose love and the constant blush from having his boyfriend hold him while kissing all the time looked good on him. Though, let’s be for real, everything did on a veela and with his genetic lottery.

What else looked fabulous even after a summer of not Sebastian, was his flowers. They’d spent the summer at Hogwarts, being tended to by house-elves or whoever worked these greenhouses when the students were away. He didn’t really give a damn how it worked, as long as it did work. When he got back, he expected them to be in tip-top shape. It would be too much work for him to travel with a dozen pots back and forth by train, so he’d arranged for someone to take care of them while he was gone. Aching to see his botanical arrangements, he’d almost missed the sorting ceremony on the first evening to make sure they weren’t as dead like that peony he’d gifted Eldred last semester. Thankfully, they were gorgeous as expected, and his evening was saved.

During the few days back at school after summer vaca, Sebastian had spent most, if not all, his free time with Eldred. Easily, being in the same year and house. If he for some reason didn’t spend his time with him, Seb was in the greenhouses, a place he’d found a second home in. The forth day of term was no exception. These plants didn’t water themselves! Sure, there was probably a spell for that if he’d paid enough attention, but Sebastian didn’t know it.

On the way to his green sanctuary alone (for once), Sebastians mind drifted to a certain sweet-hearted brunette. They happened to meet in the greenhouses last year. Yuki. Sebastian hadn’t seen her yet, but that might be simply explained by them being in different houses. He’d kept an eye out for her – when he wasn’t busy admiring his boyfriend – but haven’t seen the girl yet. Seb couldn’t help but feel a bit disappointed that his new friend had been nowhere to be seen. Well, it was still early, maybe they just haven’t run into each other yet in the huge castle! It was miracle he wasn’t getting lost every day as it was. As late as yesterday, he got stuck in the moving stairs loop for twenty minutes! And it was his second year already, it shouldn't be that difficult. To make matters worse, his common room was in one of the fucking towers! He swore to god, someone hated him.

Shaking off the unpleasant feelings, his usual carefree – and some may say brainless – smile reappeared on his face when he reached the greenhouse. Pushing the door open, he took a loud, deep breath to inhale the slightly damp, but fresh aromas from the greenhouse. He loved it. And Eldred kept worrying about mud!

With his usual mindless cheerfulness, he strutted over to the part of the place where his pots were standing. It took approximately five seconds for him to register that he’d walked past someone. His smile creeping into bemused territory – and curiosity, he backtracked a few stepped and glanced towards the potting tables. It was extremely rare to run into anyone in here beyond normal class hours; to see such a pretty little thing sitting there doodling among all places available, was honestly shocking. And absolutely too precious to just ignore.

The boy was a Ravenclaw, given by the blue robes. Funny enough, Seb didn’t personally know any Ravenclaws yet. Maybe it was time to change that. If he liked to be surrounded by flowers and was pretty, he ticked most of the boxes Sebastian wanted in a friend. He didn’t have many requirements, as long as he wasn’t insulted, he liked most people at first glance. Something that probably made him very American.

The pretty boy must have been really deep in thought for not having noticed Seb yet; he hadn’t exactly been quiet. Not really sneaking – but not saying anything as he walked up towards him – Sebastian leaned over his shoulder to see what he was doodling. Some jacket by the looks of it. Strange. It was undeniably well drawn, just... not exactly what he’d been expecting. Though to be fair, he hadn’t expected anything at all. “What are you doing?” Seb wondered, voice sweetly intrigued.

What are you doing?” a voice rang out. Everything in Lorenzo jolted. As the clammy air shot into his lungs, a gasp slipped past his lips. His shoulders seemed to shrink to half their size. The blue eyes widened, and the hairs at the nape of his neck stood like soldiers arrayed in tight formation, ready for the firing squad. For a moment, the pen nearly slipped from his fingers—then the tension locked his grip around the quill’s shaft, pressing the thin breadth into his skin.
Though the velvety timbre of the voice trembled against his ear like a gentle touch, it was far too close. The suddenness of it ran through him like an ambush from a dark corner of the woods. Instinct might have driven him to lash out—or at least lean away and smother the flight impulse—had the scent not reached him at that instant! It poured into his nose as though a god of flowers had appeared at the very spot from which the voice had come—near him. A drift of roses, peonies, and jasmine swept over his cheekbones and danced around the tip of his nose. Lorenzo’s heart pounded. A faint tremor unfurled through his muscles, setting the cords of his neck alight. The young Italian turned his head.

Che diav—” The startled question almost slipped free, dragging his manners behind it. Italian ran through his veins and slipped in confusion on his tongue.

Lorenzo stared at the figure beside him. The stranger was far closer than he had imagined. Directly at his side, leaning half over his shoulder, stood an older student. However, it felt as though, for the first time in his life, he was allowed to look comfortably into the sun. The rays seemed to gather like gentle light in the stranger‘s breath. Lorenzo’s lips parted. A warm astonishment washed the irritation away, yet left no less stunned silence in its wake. It was as if the goddess of beauty and love herself had kissed the boy with the crimson collar, right upon his full lips and consecrating his entire being. Lorenzo‘s heart quickened, as though it were remembering a familiar nature. His gaze fixed on the thick lashes; each blink felt conducted like the rise and fall of a musical piece. He had not known time could behave this way—slowing, languidly rolling past with every breath. Lorenzo's shoulder relaxed, but not even embarrassment could break the spell. An ancient longing bloomed in red across his cheeks. The dream of belonging and family choked his sense of etiquette and manners, but the question still lingered in the air.

Lorenzo breathed softly, “Drawing… my name is Lorenzo, and what is yours?” The question unspooled from his lips, less an inquiry than a reflection of astonishment at his own feelings.

They sat heavy in his stomach and head, but unraveled his senses as though he were seated beside a long-lost family member—the kind whose identity would be discussed over a delightful brunch. Lorenzo did not notice how his fingers slowly uncurled, not even when the quill made its escape and fell onto the paper. Ink welled from its tip, spreading across one of the finely drawn sleeves and covered it whole. Even his exhale felt slowed.

The boy practically jumped when Seb spoke. Seb didn’t budge, though—he stayed leaned over, curious and unbothered, like he hadn’t seen the spasm. He hadn’t meant to startle him; honestly, he just wanted a better look at what the boy was doing! Probably none of his business, but the greenhouses were basically his second home; he had every right to wonder. This boy was merely a visitor in his space. An absolute adorable and pretty visitor – thank god. The veela didn’t want his immediate surroundings to be tainted with ugly! Sharing the common room with certain people was bad enough!

If Sebastian was slow, this boy was even slower. He didn’t mind. Starstruck and wide-eyed, he froze under Seb’s expectant smile. Never one to shy away from attention — or obvious admirers — Sebastian let him stare, basking in the attention while leaning in just a little closer to give him a better look, for however long it lasted. A few seconds at most, though he wouldn’t have minded it stretching on forever. Maybe it was that he looked like he had just seen a god or something. Whatever it was, Seb enjoyed it.

Eventually he answered that he was drawing(he knew that already), and told him that his name was Lorenzo. Seb giggled. “Yes, I could tell that much. I’m not that dumb!” Though, he absolutely was in everything except for fashion, beauty and money. Lorenzo wouldn’t yet be familiar with Sebastian’s less-than-bright reputation, if his way of carrying himself didn’t give it away already that his priorities, were in other things than academics. The real question was why he was drawing some random coat instead of something prettier. He clearly had the talent for it.

Not until a minute or so later did he reflect on the foreign sounding name. Slowly, it hit him: “Lorenzo… Oh! So you’re Italian? You know, I used to live in Rome for a while!” Excited, because now they had more in common than just being beautiful, Sebastian proceeded – with confidence way beyond his skills – to speak Italian like he knew what he was talking about. “Roma è… how you say… my favoritissimo city, sì sì! I also like… uhm… the gelatos molto grande, and the… uhh… Colosseo… molto, eh… historico, yes? Except the homeless people — they were kinda scary at night.” His Italian had been conversational at best back then, and he never got rid of his American accent. Besides, you didn’t learn that much in a year or two, anyway – but either way, he didn’t immediately realize how much he’d lost. Not even when he butchered every other word – with confidence!

After a while of searching for words that he thought he knew, he admitted with a defeated pout: “… It was a few years ago, you know?”

The stranger boy began to charmingly chuckle. The sound swirled into Lorenzo’s left ear, brushed gently across his thoughts, and slipped out the right. He said it was obvious—at least to anyone who wouldn’t count themselves among the stupid. It stirred a thought and with it, suddenly, Lorenzo found himself in the latter category. For he had given such an obvious answer, he can‘t claim to be of cleverness. His brows furrowed slightly, and an embarrassed expression lowered his gaze.

"Yes, that is indeed true. Forgive me,.." Lorenzo quietly admitted.

In the brief silence which followed, the Ravenclaw tried to call himself back to composure. His blue eyes studied the scene on the sheet of paper. The quill now rested with its tip half drowned in a puddle of dark ink. That black mishap reflected his own unsettled eyes and admonished the young Italian to smooth his features. Even if the beautiful boy beside him stood too close and had caught him in a private moment, he shouldn’t sit there with lips frozen stiff and discomfort painted on jaw and chin. His father would disapprove. The realization tightened his chest with strict teaching.
He immediately lowered his hand back to the paper—gently pulled it closer. The jacket he‘d been sketching slowly vanished beneath an accident summoned by shame. With measured breaths Lorenzo forced his jaw to ease and the brows to settle into calm form.
Only to be suddenly jump-started by a voice, for him too loudly ringing into his ears: “Lorenzo… Oh! So you’re Italian? You know, I used to live in Rome for a while!”
The voice was smooth, perfectly honed for the Gryffindor’s throat. Yet the volume thundered through Lorenzo’s body. Combined with the closeness, the unfamiliar mix nearly caused him to flinch. His head snapped up, turning back toward the other. Realization pressed into his mind and claimed the throne of his awareness: the boy was Part-Veela.
Recognition sank into Lorenzo’s chest. His shoulders eased, and a warm, benevolent light unfurled across his eyes. He could not recall ever having met another of his kind. At one or two events he had crossed paths with female Part-Veela, but never a male—and certainly not one of similar age. A small smile threatened to curve his lips. Although, the other boy, with a natural air of confidence and charm, began tossing Italian words from his tongue. They tumbled into Lorenzo’s ears like drunken men through a doorway. Even the pronunciation mangled the romance language, as if the boy’s jaw were some cruel device of linguistic torture. Nonetheless, Lorenzo could hear that it was about Rome. The boy said he would like the city, but find the homeless people frightening at night. Lorenzo couldn’t help but let his own excitement spread into a wider smile. Though the performance bordered on insult, it was amusing—and terribly precious. The boy shifted slowly to the side and leaned against the tabletop. The wood pressed into his ribs, but it didn’t bother him, since the Gryffindor suddenly pulled a pout across his face. Like a dejected puppy, the stranger tried to explain himself: “…It was a few years ago, you know?”

I wouldn’t have guessed that at all,” Lorenzo replied, a trace of deliberately scattered sugar on his lips. “Especially since you still remember quite a lot of words.”

With a rather graceful gesture he lifted a hand toward the chair beside him. How much of his remark truly matched his opinion was left unresolved. Lorenzo deemed of importance to cheer the puppy up. Even the ink blot was nearly forgotten—and so the thickening smell of dirt and plants.

Please, take a seat. May I ask your name? I don’t believe I’ve ever met another of my kind in person—male, at least,” Lorenzo explained himself, keeping his voice as comfortably confident as he could muster. After all, he didn’t want the invitation to be mistaken for a sudden whim.
