Flight Risks

When would she learn? The rare instances Maelys Delarosa chose to make conscientious, spontaneous decisions never went well. Namely, they left the somewhat neurotic Slytherin in a state of panic.
Even at eleven years old, the young witch thought through her choices with a certain level of care. It was both to her benefit and her detriment. Maelys rarely injured herself. She had never broken a bone in her life. Even public embarrassment (that she was aware of) was a rare event in Mae's life. Her actions were all carefully thought through as to prevent it. Of course, with smaller groups and in privacy she allowed herself to relax more. She spoke in excess, usually, especially when trying to make someone else feel at ease. She was a rare breed of social chameleon in that sense— never exactly the same as the previous year, or month, or week. Always an outsider trying to crack the code of how everything worked.
It was hard to call Maelys' decision to sign up for the Quidditch team a spontaneous choice. Rather, it was calculated. Through careful observation, Maelys had noted the wizarding lot's affinity for the sport. Dare she say, they were obsessed. Hence, learning about Quidditch had seemed like a natural next step on her journey towards not looking like an idiot in front of wizarding kids. An open slot for the backup 2nd string seeker listed on the Slytherin house bulletin had caught her eye. Was seeker not the most important position? Maelys had decided this was an opportunity she ought not to pass up.
Hence, she panicked. More aptly, the Slytherin witch wrote her name in big, looping letters on the sign-up sheet— letters that embodied confidence. Then, she picked up her quill and made the most hastily-written, embarrassing advertisement poster.
FLYING INSTRUCTOR REQUIRED
Saturday, 13 September. 2pm @ the Quidditch Training Pitch!
I want to learn more about the sport so I'd like someone who knows something to teach me. Only one of you, please. This is not a prank. You will be paid with snacks from my trunk!!!
Then, regretfully, she hung it in the Slytherin common room. At least it was anonymous so her reputation wasn't totally ruined.
Saturday afternoon came eventually. she found herself standing in the courtyard, with an old school broom in her hand. Her outfit was the most athletic one she could put together out of clothes she already owned. Her pants were vintage Juicy Couture which was basically athleisure if she thought about it enough (and didn't think about the velvet touching the web-covered broom handle cause EW.) Her hair was up in something one might consider a bun if they squinted. (She had taken it up, down, done a twist, decided against that, realized she was late, and put it in this concoction of an updo all 10 minutes before she was supposed to be down at the practice pitch.)
Luckily, although it was a close call, she was NOT late to her own appointment. Rather, whoever the mystery responder was, if they did come, was getting close... How would she know if someone was coming or not? This scheme was ill-thought-out at best— not Maelys' finest work. It was better than showing up to Quidditch tryouts never having played the sport.
