Hearing Alejandro laugh at the joke he told brought a genuine smile to Malcolm's lips for a moment, a smile that quirked up at the corner as the Gryffindor boy came back with a quip of his own. Maybe it had been that retort about it taking more than some sparks and dancing to take him down that had inspired the perfect casting of the Knockback Jinx that Sere had commented on. But perfect or not, the other boy had managed to avoid it all the same. Damn.September 20th, 2025

The fact he'd also been able to wheel out of the way of Alejandro's spell in time had surprised even him, a little bit. But it also meant that they were now three rounds in, and neither side had taken even a bit of actual damage. In a way, that was better than what Malcolm had dreaded happening when he came up onto the piste. At least he hadn't already been knocked out by an opponent two years above him. But he couldn't help but hope that their spells would start hitting more often now that they'd had a few rounds to get warmed up.
Was it was risky to think that way, almost begging the duelling gods to take a bit less pity on the first year in his first duel? Maybe a little. But he couldn't help it. The thrill of the sport was already buzzing in his veins, and somewhere along the line, his priorities had started to shift away from not wanting to make a fool of himself and towards wanting to make this count.

My vision came back and getting inspiration from Malcolm's attempt I cast the dancing feet spell at him. This time, thankfully something came out of my wand. It went straight for Malcolm but he managed to weave out of the way. I sighed clearly showing my frustration. How's he bloody done that? He's on a wheelchair for goodness sakes. Even if he was hit, how would it even work? Would the wheelchair start jumping around. Sadly, I would have to debunk that another time as it missed.
Malcolm on the other hand had cast a perfect Knockback Jinx. I mean absolute perfection. It was a tad bit brighter than normal. A first year cast that. Wow. It went flying straight at me. I sidestepped to the right and dodged it. If I'd been hit by that, I would be dead. It looked really powerful. This duel would probably be finished if it had found its mark. So far none of us have been hit by anything. Except the green sparks at the start. Three rounds and nothing's happened. We were all back at square one. It was getting much more tense now. We both needed to make sure we don't make any silly mistakes. I held my wand tightly for the next round.

Date : September 20th, 2025 Color code : Written|Thought|Said After the third round, both duellists definitely gained their confidence on the piste, both quickly familiarizing themselves over the arena. Impressive. Their desire to blast a damage against each other was also became one clear thing. Damage over time with The Fire-Making Spell: a logical, understandable decision. Three rounds without any damage must've been pretty much boring.
As both performed incantations, attempting to conjure jets of orange light from the tips of their wands, a memory flashed through the moderator's mind. Right, I was knocked out in this round, the fourth round While Sere had previously hated that bitter moment where she went unconscious within only four rounds during her first duel, now she could slightly smile at the memory. Still, a pang of ambition surged everytime she remembered that, but now at least she accepted that it was part of the process.
The fourth round also seemed to be a significant breakthrough in this duel. The previously evenly matched situation, with both duellists able to dodge and hold every debuff, was now beginning to show its end of phase. Alejandro successfully casted Incendio and threw it at Malcolm. The badger tried to dodge it, but the fire spell still managed to 'graze' his left shoulder. "An impaired hit! But I think that will be fine as I don't see any flame---Oh, gosh." Before she could finish her sentence, the same orange light Malcolm was about to cast went up toward himself and hit him. Squarely, not impaired. "Great, now I see the flames." The hem of Malcolm's clothes began to burn in the magical flames.
This was getting interesting. They'd better move on to the next round right now.

For round 4 someone was finally hit. Yes, finally! We both had the same idea of casting a fire-making charm. I successfully conjured orange flames and sent it at Malcolm. He was able to more or less weave out of the way. Again showing great skill on that wheelchair of his. Nevertheless the result of our duel, I have to ask him how he does it. It's not quick enough because the fire just about grazes his shoulder. Maybe I'm not that bad at duelling. Just maybe. This was still only a first year after all. I got ready to hopefully dodge whatever Malcolm throws at me.
In the end, I didn't have to dodge. Whilst I successfully cast the fire-making spell, Malcolm on the other hand fails to cast a fire-making spell. He fails critically. His fire accidentally goes onto himself. Oof tough luck. Due to the result of his failure, he also sets himself aflame. Excitement started to build in my stomach. This is my chance to push on and gain even more of an advantage. I just need to make sure I don't make any mistakes. I took a deep breath and readied my wand. Bring on the next round.

The scent of burning filled the piste as a certain first year's silent prayer to the duelling gods got an answer, the smoke curling around him and flames licking at his form before his brain had entirely registered what exactly had happened. Not only had one combatant's spell hit a target, both had done so. In hindsight, perhaps it would indeed have been wise to be a bit more specific in who he'd like to get hit by his spell, because as it happened, apparently the deities in question had a penchant for dramatic irony, seeing as despite the fact that the lion's Incendio had only clipped him, they had seen fit to redirect his own flames straight back at him. A rather unfortunate result. Indeed, if the young pureblood had had any concept in his mind of what a rollercoaster was, it would make an apt comparison to his performance in this duel, seeing as he'd seamlessly transitioned from pulling off a beautifully cast Knockback Jinx to bloody setting himself on fire. In his mind, as he bit back a string of rather colorful curses in both of his languages of choice, he wondered if this might be the wand he'd borrowed from his da spitefully deciding to rebel against a boy who it hadn't chosen of its own volition.September 20th, 2025

Up until now, both duellists were still looking fine, although the difference of academic years resulting in gap of skills was starting to show. Alejandro casted The Knockback Jinx, a spell every duellist in the world had surely casted at least once. Despite of the impaired result, Malcolm was still pushed back a few distance from his initial position. Sere wondered if Alejandro was the type who gradually improved his skills each round and would give his ultimate performance towards the end, like every main character in a fantasy movie. If that was his plan, Sere would gladly watch this 'movie' to find out how it ended.
Malcolm, whether sharing Sere's strategic tendencies or simply acting out reflexively because of the heat, didn't let the magic flame drain his stamina any further and decided to extinguish it with a spell that rhymed with its function. Extinguo was successfully casted, and the debuff instantly went off. "That was a good choice. I hope you still have enough stamina to continue the match." The Gryffindor girl observed Malcolm for a second then said, "Umm, stronger than I expected. You can continue and choose your next action." She concluded and gave the signal, "Alright, in your position... ready, set, blast!"

As the duel crested over the fifth of its ten rounds, Malcolm knew that he had no choice but to deliver a much better performance in the second half of this exchange than he had in the first. So far, this duel seemed to be mirroring the food fight he'd found himself involved with a few weeks before now. That had started out strong too, with him managing to get oatmeal in a Gryffindor's hair... only for a certain troublesome half-goblin in his own House to, first, somehow manage to miss while frisbee-ing a plate at his head, then decide to come smash a glass directly into his face. Granted, at least in this case, the blond boy had willingly chosen to be in the firing line. That distinction, unfortunately, did not make the Knockback Jinx hurt any less. Nor did it make him any less worried that his wheelchair would get knocked over and he'd wind up flailing on his back like an upended turtle. Luckily, that didn't happen... this time around, in any case. Wheeling his way back to his position on the piste, Malcolm took a deep breath, finding his center while coming up with what he hoped was a viable strategy, before raising his wand towards his opponent.September 20th, 2025

I saw Malcolm's aflame state from his own spell and decided to capitalise on it with a very common duelling spell. I cast the knockback jinx at him. He wheeled out of the way but again the spell caught him. It managed to knock him back a slight bit. Fortunately for him his wheelchair didn't tip over. No ill intent there from my thoughts. That would've been disastrous for him and good for me in terms of our duel. Malcolm wheeled his way back into position on the piste. It looked like he was gonna cast a spell.
Malcolm did cast a spell. The Hufflepuff put out the flames on his shirt out with a simple Extinguo. It's a good choice. Smoking aflame clothes were no fun. The flames were out but he was one step closer to passing out and letting me win this duel. I had been a little shaky at the start but now I'm starting to get used to the sport. I feel much more confident and relaxed now. I readied my wand again for the following round. The advantage was clear for me now. Everything can change in round though like in all sports. I needed to focus.

Date : September 20th, 2025 Color code : Written|Thought|Said Malcolm took another damage from the Dancing-Feet Spell, it was successfully hit him this time. Just a few rounds ago, Sere intended to ask the Professor about Tarantallegra's effects on wheelchair users; but it was no longer needed now. She found the answer, observed it herself. Right after the purple light hit Malcolm squarely, the Hufflepuff's wheelchair seemed to have its own will. The wheel went here and there, formed patterns as if Malcolm were competing in a dance sport. Unfortunately, Sere couldn't identify what kind of dance it was. "Hold on tight or you'll be thrown off right away." The girl wondered whether Malcolm could regain control of his wheelchair in the next round.
Malcolm himself tried to damage Alejandro with the Knockback Jinx. It was a good idea to balance their gap, considering that this spell's best feature had always been its damage. The luck was not with him as Malcolm's accuracy went so low. He managed to cast it well, but Alejandro easily dodged it. "Well, that was another nice try." Sere tilted her head, scenarios popped up from her mind if she were in Malcolm's position. This is not going to be easy, Sere concluded. Her mind formed sets of strategies, one of which was a strategy to stay conscious at the end of this match.

I cast a dancing-feet spell at Malcolm and he didn't manage to get out of the way in time. The purple spell hit him in the chest and Malcolm's wheelchair started jumping and moving around trying to do a jig of some sorts. I dunno what kind of dance moves they've got in Wheelchair-land. There also goes my unanswered theory from earlier. When a wheelchair user gets hit by the dancing feet spell, the wheel chair starts moving with a mind of it own.
"That's an interesting jig you're doing there." I called out to Malcolm.
I wonder how long the effect will last?
Malcolm responded by trying to cast a knockback jinx at me but I saw it from a mile away and dodged it swiftly. Perhaps his out-of-control wheelchair contributed to him missing but let's just say I dodged it. Malcolm really loving that Knockback Jinx. I mean it is one of the most useful spells in duelling. Quite easy to learn and master since they teach it in class during first year. Deals good damage to your competitor. I prepared my wand for the next round. Everything's been going my way after round one. Is my luck going to run out?
