beginning of june
Avis spread a hand across the picnic blanket underneath her, smoothing the bumps out and adjusting the edges. She set the heavy basket of goodies in the middle and opened the top, peering inside with poorly hidden anticipation. All her and Maisie's favorite foods were stashed in that holy grail of a picnic basket. Most notably, a few blueberry muffins sat at the top but two bottles of ice cold butter beer, slices of watermelon, treacle tarts, cauldron cakes, and a few other food items stolen from the Great Hall were packed haphazardly into the basket. She grimaced. Maisie would probably comment on the organization, or in the very least notice it, but she didn't mind. Her friend's ease with organization and planning had kept Avis afloat this year and she intended to tell her before the year was up.

And the year was ending, quickly. She sighed sitting back and pulling her knees to her chest. It had mostly been a blur. Avis' first year at Hogwarts certainly had had its ups and downs but it definitely did not disappoint and she in all honesty felt sick to her stomach when she thought of returning home, no matter how much she missed Mam and the sea.

The recent news of Da hadn't been good. There hadn't been a sighting of him in months and coming back to that without the distractions that school had so easily given her wasn't a very comforting thought.

She glanced back towards the castle towering over the lake next to her in the area she had selected beneath a willow tree for her and Maisie's picnic. Reaching into the basket, she pulled out a muffin and took a bite, resigning herself to wait with her melancholy thoughts as she chewed.

The end of First Year had always felt so very far away, but here they were in June. And that meant it was time to celebrate—the pair of eleven year olds had survived. Perhaps the most dangerous thing had been the potions championship, but everything in-between two posed an adjustment.

And now that the weather had progressed from cold to cool, Maisie was excited to join Avis for a wee picnic on the grounds. She hopped over with ease to find Avis and her very full basket. She eye'd it suspiciously. "You better not have anything too healthy in there," she joked as she sat down. While it would be nice to have home cooking in a few months, it would also mean the appearance of things like vegetables. But the muffin Avis was eating was a good sign. Maisie, however, reached right in and eventually pulled out a butter beer.

"Thanks for grabbing everything," she said as she took a swig, "I just wanted to get that DADA essay in on time." And although true, this seemed like a lackluster excuse for not planning. After all, Maisie loved planning and plotting. "Here, I'll make you a flower crown," she said as she pulled a daisy from the ground and slit the stem with her nail so she could lock in another and another, thereby starting the chain.

As she did this, she looked across and said, "So, I think we should start planning for Operation Fun 2.0 next term." Because unlike Mylo, Maisie did not just run away and give up.

"Me? Healthy?" Avis squeaked in a feigned incredulous tone as Maisie reached into the basket and pulled out butter beer.

Avis nodded at her friend's words, a small smile playing on her lips when she mentioned the DADA essay. The only reason Maisie had missed planning for their picnic was because she had been occupied with planning and completing an essay. Typical, Avis thought with an amused look at her friend.

The flower crown was also typical. Maisie was incredibly creative, as the other Ravenclaw had discovered over their year of friendship. And it far surpassed her ability to do anything of the sort. She studied the girl's process before plucking her own daisy from the ground. Just because she struggled with arts and crafts didn't mean she never tried, especially when she had such a great teacher at her disposal.

"I'll make one, too. Except this flower doesn't seem to be cooperating much," Avis said with a frown, realizing she'd accidentally plucked the entire stem off. Absentmindedly, she plucked another one as Maisie introduced yet another scheme for the pair.

Avis grinned. Their last operation hadn't exactly taken off because Mylo had caught them in the act of planning for it. They'd decided to bide their time and wait until they were less suspicious, in order to see if the two girls could get their prefect friend to break a rule or two...or at least one of their high standards. It was high time they let loose a bit and Avis and Maisie were determined to make it so.

"Alright," Avis said, having given up on her daisy and returned to yet another muffin. "What were you thinking? Mylo's a big grown up third year now so what if they don't have time for fun? We have to be way more sneaky about it this time, I think," she rambled, pondering. The Ravenclaw wasn't worried though. Maisie always had a plan for everything.
