I stared blankly at the other side of the corridor.
The wall had many little breaks and cracks alongside it that I hadn't noticed before. But, then again, before, I had 2 parents, not one. It wasn't that I loved my mother, because I didn't.
But because having 2 parents was the norm, so to speak.
I didn't think much about it, simply that it was what it should be. And then she had to go along and die.
I hated her for it at first, but then, it became this. Numb. Cold. Like I froze in time while the world kept spinning. I wanted to scream at shout at the people that passed me.
How could they go on living their lives?
Didn't they feel the difference?
The big empty space her inflated ego left behind?
But I knew that they wouldn't. That it wouldn't mean anything to them. I was the only one. That thought made a tear slip out of my eye as I wiped it away hastily.
The dead weren't worth spilling tears over.
As they say, no use crying over spilt ashes.
Then, a leering voice came from above me.
"Why, why. Looky here. If it isn't the gun-metal Gryffindor creep."
"Why, yea right mate. It is!"
I looked up. The 2 cruel faces of the 5th years above me shined in the light. Their faces were contorted into callous and sadistic grins.
I stood, grabbing my black book bag and tried to slip past them. I nearly slammed into one of their burly chests.
"Oh no ya don't."
One of them sneered. It was the taller one. They were both well over 6 ft in height. But one looked just slightly taller than the other and that was the one that spoke. The boys grinned. It was fiendish.
I quietly told them to leave me be. They laughed.
"Wha? The little sooky baby wants us to leave her alone?" The other one spoke in a merciless voice.
"Creep. What are you doing here?" Taller One sneered out the question, his face shadowed.
Shorter on grabbed me by the front of my hoodie and snarled.
"He asked you a question."
He shook me for emphasis.
"Answer it!"
I said, "I just want to be left alone."
They guffawed.
Shorter One hadn't let me go when I asked the question, rather his hand tightened.
"Ooh! The little sooky baby wants to be left alone."
There it was again. The grinning in unison. A thought randomly popped into my head. Did they practice that or did that come naturally to all bullies?
I sighed. "Whatever you're going to do, get it over with already."
I was tired of being played with. If they were going to pummel me, just let it be over with already.
But, I suddenly realized that it may have not been a good idea on my part to say that. They were suddenly silent.
And seething.
Shorter One's hand suddenly reared back and punched, straight in the jaw.
I thought I heard a crack. My lip was split.
Blood dribbled down my chin as I re-oriented myself after the blow.
"Shut up! That's what you get for talking when you aren't supposed to talk!"
Shorter One growled.
My head reeled from it. But, I did it again. I taunted them.
I liked it. The song Boy in the Bubble came to mind.
I felt just like that.
He punched me in the stomach this time. He dropped me to the floor and I immediately curled into a ball to protect myself. I desperately wished that there was someone who could help me.

An almost sickening groan could be heard. It echoed in my ears. I don't know why, but my ears rang a little and I cringed slightly at the sound. My feet padded a little faster, my bookbag feeling less heavy all of a sudden.

The world slowed a little bit and I turned the corner.

I don't know why I reacted so quickly, but I'm glad I did.

Two rather tall Ravenclaw boys loomed over a Gryffindor girl who was in a ball on the ground. My eyes dragged over her state, seeing how she clutched herself.

She looked to be in extreme pain.

Only then did the two boys notice my presence when-
SMACK
My bookbag hit the taller one's shoulder, running him into his shorter friend and knocking him over with a bloody nose.

“Piss off!” I shouted as they leered at me, nearly losing hold of my book back as I saw from the corner of my eye the girl huddled on the floor craw away slightly to avoid being stepped on.

"Why don't you-” I cut the shorter one off by coming up right to his chest, and anchoring him toward me to meet my aching fist. I kicked at them as they drove off, before meeting eyes with the Gryffindor.

I reached out my hand and tugged her right up, allowing her to lean heavily on me.

“Your lip…” I murmured softly, brushing it over with my now soiled sleeve as she cringed in pain. I frowned deeply, my lips tugging down to a grimace as I tugged her towards the direction of the hospital wing.

My wrists were sore now from such a haresh swing of my bag, and hitting such a bony jaw. “What happened? “ I worked up the curiosity to ask as I gently tugged her sore frame down the cool halls, the people in the portraits following us with their painted eyes.

I was deliriously in pain. I felt like I was floating. Only that the cloud beneath me was as cold and hard as stone.
You are on stone, my mind reminded me.
They kept beating me, kicking my stomach until I was sure that I'd probably be left with internal injuries.
Then, suddenly, there was someone else. Someone who was yelling at the boys to piss off. I heard sneers and a resounding CRACK!
Maybe this savior broke one of their jaws. I heard 2 pairs of steps getting farther away.
The boys. Then, someone lifted me up.
I saw that this was another girl. She wore the same style that I did, and I felt almost comforted to know that another fellow goth was taking care of me. She practically lifted me up and let me lean heavily against her. She brushed her sleeve against my lip. I winced at the pain. She gently asked me what happened.
I stuttered and blurred my words together. They ran like a river in the spring. I felt like I couldn't form proper words, and the idea irritated me. Finally, I slurred out like a drunk that I was minding my own business and they just came at me and started bullying me.
I noticed that she was taking me into the direction of the hospital wing. I groaned. I didn't feel like going there but I had a feeling that I dislocated something in my encounter with the Ravenclaws.
The air felt stiff. I was completely opposite.
I felt like my legs had gotten hit with a jelly-legs curse or something. Maybe they did curse me, I wondered.
I mumbled. The other girl looked at me, clearly trying to decipher what I said. I spoke again, louder this time, inwardly wincing at how scratchy and used up my voice sounded like. "Did ya 'ear them puut 'a 'urse on mea?"
She looked a bit confused. Maybe it was my accent. But I didn't have the energy to try to fix it. I repeated.
She still didn't look like she understood me. I felt my jaw getting swollen. Maybe it was that. I spoke again, repeating it with a bit of anger that I could barely muster up. She finally understood me.
She shook her head no.
I muttered, happy that they at least didn't think to do that.
For a couple of Ravenclaws, they sure were a bit thick.
