After spending the day walking around the camp activities, including attending the petting zoo, it was time for Leo to move on to an activity he picked for himself. After running back to the tent to change and grab his backpack he ventured off to the tents area of the summer camp. He walked around and checked out the different themed tents as he passed them. As he wandered around he found a spot in the shade of a tree and slumped down under it, leaning his back against the trunk. It had only been a couple of days since the start of camp and he was already exhausted and there was still so many events and things to come in the next weeks. While he still wasn’t sure why his parents pushed him into going to this camp, he admittedly was enjoying the different events and things to do so far. However being that he was more quiet and shy it was hard for him to actually go up to these strangers and try to start a conversation. What would he talk about? He was always horrible at making small talk with people, and it always was just really uncomfortable too.

For the moment though, he was perfectly content with sitting alone under the shade of the tree. It was fairly quiet in the area since most people were walking around the actual event area. Leo was happy he brought his drawing pad and a book with him to camp so at least when he got the chance to go off alone and relax he could do what he loved most. He still planned to enjoy the last few weeks of summer how he wanted to, even if it wasn’t how most people would spend their time. He reached into his bag and pulled out his drawing pad and pencils and got right to drawing. While he was overwhelmed by everything at the camp, he had to admit that it was giving him new inspiration for his drawings.

After sitting and drawing for a little bit, Leo pulled out one of the pages he had been drawing on. He drew some of the creatures he saw at the petting zoo and wanted to fold it up and make a new bookmarker for his book he brought but the wind suddenly blew it out of his hand and carried it off. “No!” He yelled, “I just finished that!” He quickly gathered his stuff and threw his backpack on before running after it. Leo followed the direction it went but lost sight of it. There was no stopping his emotions from showing now. He usually did his best to keep his emotions under control so he wouldn’t accidentally change anything but now he was getting frustrated. Without meaning to his hair followed his emotions and turned a dark, fiery red. He didn’t bother changing it back right away since he felt he was safe after not seeing anyone around the whole time he was drawing. “Where did it go?!” He asked outloud, almost yelling the words.

It was a few days into the summer camp. Rosaline was gradually beginning to feel calmer and more grounded. She had always attended a Muggle school, and her only contacts with the magical world had been through her mother’s side of the family and her magical tutor. This was her first experience spending time around so many young witches and wizards. She had tried to open up for some conversations, but it seemed most people already knew each other, so she held back. It wasn’t the ideal situation, but she still wanted to make some friends here. She was figuring out how she should act at summer camp.

That day, Rosaline planned to take on an adventure at the London Quidditch Stadium. She had wandered around the area over the past few days, but today there was a new event, a Petting Zoo. She was on her way from her tent to the petting zoo. Rosaline loved Magical creatures. She was certain she needed to check that out. Her favorite one was the Griffin. Though she had never seen a real one, she loved how they were described in both wizard books and Muggle books. They were elegant, loyal, and beautiful.

What if there is a Griffin……? Rosaline became caught up in the idea, absent-minded, not paying attention to the road. She was so excited she almost skipped. She walked across a grassy ground. She could smell the freshness of sunshine. A tree was standing in the distance.

Wind was blowing, while Rosaline was still thinking about her imagination that she might see a Griffin, and a rustling sound was coming closer. Before she could find out what it was, a paper was slapped on her face.

“Whoa, what happened?” Rosaline was startled and hadn’t realized what had just happened. She carefully held the paper, trying not to rip it off. It was a beautiful drawing of a magical creature. She immediately loved this drawing. She could tell that the artist put a lot of effort into it.

As she appreciated the drawing, she heard a boy yelling in the distance, “Where did it go?” She instantly connected the dots. He must be the owner of this drawing. She could relate to him. She knew how upsetting it could be to lose something you worked hard on. She trotted in the direction of the sound.

Rosaline kept moving in the direction and spotted a boy with fiery red hair. He looked frustrated. She approached him and said softly, “Hey, I just found this drawing and heard your voice. I thought it might be yours?”

Leo couldn’t help but feel frustrated after losing his drawing. He knew he could just go back and redraw it but he had already worked really hard on this one. As he looked around he spotted a girl coming towards him, “Oh-“ His eyes widened as he realized the girl might’ve seen his hair change. Nervously rubbing his neck, he nodded as the girl came closer, holding his drawing he had lost. “Yes, that was me and that is mine.” He said softly as he took it back. “I didn’t know anyone else was over here but thank you for bringing it back.” Leo gave a small smile and looked down at the drawing in his hand. “I was working really hard on this phoenix drawing after seeing different magical creatures at the petting zoo so I wanted to color it in still.” He admitted to her before placing it safely back into his bag.

Now that he had his drawing returned to him, he was feeling better and his hair changed back to its normal black color. He looked back up at the girl after closing his bag, “Did you go over to the petting zoo yet? It was pretty cool.” He said, trying to make conversation to fill in the awkwardness. “There were so many interesting creatures there, I loved it.” He pushed his bangs back with his fingers and let them fall back down messily and realized as he saw the black hair hanging down again in front of his eyes that it had changed back. “Oh- I can explain that-“ He started nervously as he looked at the girl to see her reaction. He really hoped he would get through the year without people finding out about his secret but now he already ruined that before classes even started.

As Rosaline approached the boy, he seemed a little nervous, yet remained very polite and friendly. She handed the drawing back to its owner. “I hope it doesn’t get ruffled by the wind. It just flew right to me before I even knew what was happening,” Rosaline said with a light laugh, trying to ease the awkwardness of a first meeting.

When she heard that this was the boy’s artwork, she said admirably, “Wow, I think you’re talented. It’s a vivid picture of a phoenix. Though I haven’t seen a real one before, I think your drawing is amazing!” She liked the drawing a lot. She always thought that creating drawings that could convey one’s emotions and imagination was such a wonderful thing.

Her eyes brightened when she captured the words Petting Zoo. She beamed and said, “You’ve already been to the Petting Zoo! I was planning to go there today, but got sidetracked.” She grinned at the boy and said, “Did you see a Griffin or some other animals?” Couldn’t hide her excitement, Rosaline realized she might say too much, and she flushed a rose pink on her cheeks. She waited a moment and kept saying, “If you finish coloring it, I think it’ll be more perfect! Though it’s already so good right now.”

The boy, around her age, seemed calmer compared to when he had been searching for his drawing. Thank Merlin, it didn’t get carried away by the wind. She was glad that she found the drawing and met the boy.

As she observed the boy, she noticed his hair color had changed to black. Her eyes widened before she quickly tried to hide her surprise, and she tucked a strand of her hair behind her ear. Rosaline thought the boy noticed his hair color had changed, because he was nervously explaining it. She smiled softly and tried to comfort him, “Oh, are you a Metamorphmagus, I guess? My mum is an Auror, she has a colleague with that talent too.” After a brief silence, she continued, “But I think this might not be the best timing to talk about it. If you don’t want to talk about it right now, it’s alright!” Rosaline hoped he didn’t feel too awkward. She knew this must be a secret people didn’t like to share with a stranger.

Leo chuckled nervously, “Yes I am, I try to control those powers better than this but I guess I got carried away like my drawing in the wind.” He smiled softly as he relaxed again, the girl seemed really nice and understanding of the whole situation. “People usually are shocked and then start piling on question after question or start asking me to show them more of how I can change stuff.” Admittedly he was glad she didn’t do any of that it was a welcome change and made him happy to have someone treat him normally after finding out his little secret. Now that he pulled himself together he decided to introduce himself properly. “Sorry about all of that, my name is Leo, I’m going to be a first year at Hogwarts.” He said and reached his free hand out to the girl to shake hands.

While this was definitely the most chaotic first meeting, Leo was hopeful that maybe the two could be friends, his parents would be happy he made a friend while being at the camp too. But either way it would be nice to have a friendly face around when school started. As they talked Leo remembered what she had said before the whole metamorphmagus situation. “You didn’t go to the petting zoo yet right? Did you want to go together? I wouldn’t mind going back so I could add more details to this drawing and maybe draw another one too.” He asked the girl and nervously talked a bunch. “They did have a lot of cool creatures there though, do you have any favorite magical creatures?”

A gentle breeze blew through Rosaline’s hair. The chestnut-brown hair was shining under the beautiful sunlight. She adjusted the bow in her head, wanting to give the boy a good first impression. His black hair looked so different from when it was red; it gave him a more cat-like vibe, almost reminding her of her cat, Golden. He was really cute. She tried to suppress the smile playing on her lips.

Listening to the boy’s affirmative answer, her assumption was right. She was quite thrilled getting to know someone with the Metamorphmagus ability. “Oh, I’m sorry about that. I think that’d be kind of rude. You’re still a normal person, just have an extra ability,” her brows knitted, thinking those people weren’t polite to the boy. She then added, “But I do think your power is super cool!” She smiled warmly at the boy. At the back of her mind, she thought that it must not be a good experience for him.

The boy introduced himself nicely. As soon as she heard Leo was a first-year, just like her, her eyes lit up. Under natural light, the color of her blue eyes became even lighter. “Nice to meet you, Leo. I’m Rosaline, and I’m going to be a first-year student at Hogwarts too.” Her tone was joyful, and she grinned at him. She reached out to shake his hand. It was amusing how a drawing would bring them together in this moment, though it hadn’t been a peaceful beginning but rather a bit of chaos. She still liked this meeting a lot.

Then the topics shifted back to the Petting Zoo. Leo proposed that they could go there together; he didn’t mind going again. Yet Rosaline wanted to stay here for a little bit longer, to enjoy the beautiful view and the rare spot which wouldn’t be bothered by other people. The most important thing was that she wanted to know Leo better. Glancing at him, her face flushed pink. The thought struck her, though she didn’t know what exact feeling it was. She tried to be calm and replied, “It’s no rush at all. I’m sure the Petting Zoo will still be open when we go there later. Maybe we could sit under the tree and chat?” She tilted her head a little and pointed to the spot under the tall tree.

With all the chaos that had just happened, Leo hadn’t really stopped to actually look at the girl in front of him. As she spoke he found himself awkwardly staring at her as the sun shone perfectly down on her brown hair and caught her blue eyes, almost making them sparkle. He nodded and couldn’t help but smile softly as she said that he was still a normal person, even with his abilities. This was certainly not the way he expected camp to go and how he would start his first year but he was definitely grateful to his parents now for sending him here. I guess they were right that the camp would be good for me. He thought to himself, fidgeting with the drawing in his hand.

As she introduced herself she offered her hand out to him so he reached his own hand out to shake hers. “It’s nice to meet you,” He said softly to her. Her hand was soft and she had such a sweet smile, Leo could feel his own face start to heat up. Is the heat from the sun getting to me or-? He thought to himself and quickly looked down at his bag, clearing his throat and trying desperately to avoid another mood change incident, although at that point it was unavoidable. He wasn’t sure what had come over him but his cheeks got a light blush on them and his eyes changed to match.

Leo listened as Rosaline suggested to go sit and talk for a while longer, something he was usually too shy to do but he nodded in agreement right away. He looked where she had pointed out, the nice quiet spot under the tall tree he had been drawing under before she had arrived and the whole drawing situation happened. “Alright, that sounds good to me.” He said and made sure he had all of his stuff before walking over to the shaded spot under the tree with her.

Even though it was hot out, once they were under the shade it felt a little better already. He placed his bag down first before sitting down and stretching his legs out to get comfortable. As he waited for her to get comfortable as well, he reached into his bag to get his other drawing pad and pencils. He figured since he was awkward with talking to new people he could distract himself a little from the nervousness by drawing. He glanced up at Rosaline, before flipping to a new page and started sketching, careful to hid the sketch from her so she couldn’t peak at it yet. “So… do you know what house you want to be placed in during the sorting ceremony?” He asked softly as he let the pencil glide across the page.

Rosaline was glad that Leo agreed to her proposal. It had been a tremendous impulse, one she couldn’t quite explain. She carefully sat under the shade of the tree. The wind was still blowing; it seemed it wouldn’t stop today. Rosaline looked up at the blue sky as Leo sat down near her. The grass tickled her calves a little, carrying a hint of coolness. She adjusted her posture, knees bent, hands braced against the ground. Her bearing was graceful but also effortlessly natural. The leaves above swayed gently, rustling. No one passed by within their sight, though there should be crowds of people in the Summer Camp. She wondered where everyone went. It almost felt as if they were the only two people around the field.

She glanced at Leo again. There was something unusual about her. She always looked into people’s eyes when she talked to them, but now she couldn’t do that. She felt butterflies in her stomach. Leo seemed to be drawing something. She thought he was coloring his works that were nearly lost in the wind, so she didn’t try to look at what he was working on.

“I actually don’t have a preference for houses; they all seem great to me. Though according to my family’s houses, I should have the best chance of being sorted into Ravenclaw or Slytherin.” She tilted her head, gazing into the distance ahead. Thinking of her family always brought her joy. A warm smile appeared on her face. She continued, “But there are chances that I might get into the completely unexpected house.” She chuckled.

She looked at Leo, wanting to ask him, but paused a moment. She thought his eyes seemed to change into a light pink. Was it because of me? She shook her head to get rid of the idea, but her cheeks were already flushed. Trying to be calm and return to the last topic, she asked, “What about you? Do your parents have any expectations?” Her palms felt the dryness of the grass. She picked up a leaf that had fallen too early on this summer day, and twirled it round and round. She observed the leaf and counted how many veins it had, so that Leo wouldn’t notice how flustered she was.

Leo glanced over at her periodically, continuing his drawing which he was grateful she hadn’t asked about yet. For what had been a busy few days here at camp it was surprising how right now with just the two of them sitting there everything seemed still, calm. It was very peaceful sitting there under the tree which made it easier to concentrate on the sketch and their conversation. As she spoke he listened carefully, although not looking up entirely from the drawing pad, his eyes still unknowingly that light shade of pink.

He nodded along before replying. “Ravenclaw or Slytherin? Actually my parents and my older siblings were all Ravenclaw so I most likely will fall into that house as well. If we both get into Ravenclaw we would be seeing each other a lot then, I guess.” He smiled shyly at the thought, kind of intrigued by the thought that they could get to spend more time together. “Although I wouldn’t mind being placed in another house, I just assume it will be Ravenclaw like my family wants.” When he glanced over at her again, he saw she had picked up a leaf and was twirling it around in her fingers, carefully concentrating on it. He took the moment while she was distracted slightly to study her features noticing her cheeks looked a little rosier now than before. He thought it was most likely just from the heat outside. Even so he couldn’t help feeling his own cheeks heating up again and turned his attention back to the drawing.

“Do you have any siblings or family at Hogwarts?” He asked, thinking briefly about his own annoying siblings that had just graduated from the wizarding school. As he drew he began to start focusing on adding in some details, light shading here and there. The light breeze that gently blew every so often made their shady spot under the tree very comfortable. “By the way, you said you had met your mother’s colleague that was a metamorphmagus? Did you get to see them do anything cool?” He asked as he had been curious about it since she mentioned it earlier. His parents weren’t fond of the ability and usually tried to keep the knowledge of it within the family so it was interesting for him to be able to hear about someone else with the ability for a change. “I just ask because I only know my grandmother’s metamorphmagus abilities and she doesn’t show them off so I was curious to what kind of things people with the ability can do.” He paused as he thought about it some more. “I guess also because I’m curious what I will be able to learn and do too, besides what I’ve been able to do so far with some small hair changes and eye color changes.”

Rosaline listened to Leo talk intently, tilting her head to hear more carefully. In the few days she had spent at the summer camp, she wasn’t really making friends, almost a little lonely. But now, she glanced at Leo swiftly, trying not to be noticed by him. She thought she might make a true friend today, thanks to the flying drawing.

Her first impression of Leo was quiet and cute, having delicate features and a really neat appearance. Ravenclaw. It sounded perfect for a boy like him. Putting the leaf aside, the Everhart girl smiled and said, “I think you’ll be a great Ravenclaw. The family resemblance is really powerful.” Pausing a moment, she continued, “Oh, and it definitely will be so much fun if we end up in the same house.” Her tone was genuine, filled with anticipation. “But if we aren’t in the same house, we can still meet each other in class,” she replied with a bright smile.

She cautiously observed what Leo was doing. He seemed a little preoccupied by his drawing process, and his cheeks carried a faint rosy tone. There was a glint of pink in his eyes, but she wasn’t sure what the cause of the changing color was. She wanted to ask what he was drawing, because she noticed he wasn’t coloring the old ones, but drawing a new one. She supposed. Yet Leo’s question came first. He asked her if she had any siblings or family at Hogwarts. Propping her chin on her right hand, which was on her bent knee, she quite liked this position, though not very ladylike. Then she responded softly, “I don’t have any siblings, but I have four cousins instead.” She chuckled lightly and added, “They’ve all graduated now, so I think they can’t count as still at Hogwarts. What about you?” A curious light shone in her eyes.

Hearing Leo mention the Metamorphmagus, she nodded and answered, “Yes, my mum has an old friend and colleague who’s a metamorphmagus. She is an Auror, too. I think the ability makes her an unpredictable Auror because she wouldn’t be easily found out if she were on an undercover mission. She is very cool.” As Rosaline spoke, her admiration for the woman was obvious. “She sometimes performed for me and other kids if we went to her house. But I don’t mean to treat this ability as an entertainment,” she suddenly paused, worrying if she had spoken wrongly. She met Leo’s gaze with a sheepish smile. Then she broke the silence and said, “I think she is a wonderful person, not because of her ability, but just because who she is as a person.” She continued, “Oh, and your grandmother has the ability too! I think you can do whatever you set your mind to. The ability is a gift, but it doesn’t define who you are. Though this is just what I think.” Her voice softened toward the end. She didn’t want to sound like a moralizer.
