The kitchens are located at the end of a brightly lit, colorful hall directly below the great hall. Large food-themed paintings lined the stone walls, saccharine treats, bowls of fruit and steak dinners on full display. It was the sort of passageway that caused tummies to rumble. At the very end of the hall, a great panting not unlike the painting that guarded the Gryffindor Common Room awaited them. Only there was one distinct difference, it was just a bowl of fruit.
Tickle the pear and gain entry.
Tee Hee Hee!
Something would push through the canvas, like a trapped... pear? Yes, a pear... trying to break free. The giggling pear would become a doorknob.
The kitchen was not a place for first and second years, it was too dangerous for careless hands. Yet @Jorah Moussa was going to break some rules and temporarily become the resident bad boy, stand aside @Kyle DeRook.
Inside the kitchen he would see an astonishing sight: a great room slightly larger than the the Great Hall one floor above. So much space, but why? Well, Gamps Law --

"Food is one of the first of five Principal Exceptions to Gamp’s Law of Elemental Transfigur— ... It’s impossible to make good food out of nothing! You can Summon it if you know where it is, you can transform it, you can increase the quantity if you’ve already got some."
Five great tables were placed exactly where the four house tables and one staff table stood in the great hall. Five score house elves busied themselves in this kitchen, pulling great copper pots from the shelves that lined the walls. Mixing, stirring and cooking over the great blazing hearth. The kitchen was incredibly hot but the House Elves did not seen to mind.
"Mr Moussa sir, you should not be here," an elf carrying a copper pot filled to the brim with peeled, cut russet potatoes. "Are you hungry? Canbey will get you food. Sit young mister. Sit." The House elf, not unlike the rest with large bat-like ears, a slightly thicker mid-section and spindly arms and legs. His most defining feature was the the white cotton shorts and ribbed white tank he wore. Yes, he was a free-elf under the employ of Hogwarts. While some pure-blood wizarding households still have house elves that joyfully accept their slavery, these poor dejected elves were actually paid. That said, they still loved to serve.
"Sit. Stay. Mr Moussa does not touch the hot pots and cauldrons."

Jorah made his way from the Headmaster's office to the basement just below the Great Hall. He arrived at a well lit hall decorated with various paintings of food. The hall's terminus displayed a final grand painting of a fruit bowl which was large enough to be a door. "Open!," Jorah commanded. Nothing. Jorah gripped the painting's frame and pulled, it wouldn't budge. Maybe I should knock. Jorah gave the canvas a rapping, KNOCK....KNOCK...KNOCK. No response. This is pointless. Stupid fruits! He swiped across the canvas and turned to head back up to Lear's office.
A quiet "Tee Hee" was heard from behind him. "Hello?," Jorah spun back around toward the sound. He examined the fruit bowl more closely, but nothing had changed. He ran his finger across the canvas. When his skin brushed over the pear, he heard it again, "Tee Hee." What the? Jorah palpated the pear once more until he was tickling it. "TEE HEE HEE!" The pear laughed before extending out of the painting in the form of a door handle. Jorah turned the knob and entered the kitchen.
The kitchen had five large tables mirroring the ones in the Great Hall above. Around the tables scurried one hundred house elves busily cooking away for the castle's inhabitants sitting up above. "Mr Moussa sir, you should not be here," an elf with a pot of potatoes rushed over to him. "Are you hungry? Canbey will get you food. Sit young mister. Sit." How did he elf know who he was? Did the elves come to the quidditch matches, Jorah wondered before brushing the thought aside. He thanked the elf, but refused to sit down, in fact he did the opposite.
Jorah climbed a top the nearest table and yelled down the length of the hall, waving his arms to gather as much attention to himself as possible. "Excuse me! Attention please! Free elves of Hogwarts, I need your help, its an emergency! Headmaster Lear is missing! The Sorting Hat is also missing along with all the portraits in his office. I think this has to do with the Umbridge murder that occurred here at Hogwarts in that very office! I think someone is covering their tracks. Professor Lear could be in danger! His office looks tidy but dusty. Has anyone here attended to his office? Has anyone noticed anything strange, any sign of a struggle?"

The house elves hurried themselves about the kitchen, a shh noise being exchanged here and there. "Headmaster? uh- Canbey has not hear of no Headmaster," the House Elf shook his head side to side. "Nope, Canbey would remember if we ever had one of those." He was fidgeting with his hands, his great big eyes wide and a bit moist.
"Now sit young Mister Moussa," Canbey insisted. His voice shook a bit as he made the seemingly passive demand.
Jorah did the very opposite as he climbed on top of a stool and then table. His foot might have graced (flavored) a bowl of mashed potatoes. Jorah called out to the rest of the elves, asking if any of them had seen the Headmaster. If any of them knew anything about the Headmaster's fate. "No, no!" The House Elf cried, his small hands on either side of his face. "He will get mad! He will get so mad at Canbey and at Canby's friends!"
One of the House Elves would scurry to the back of the kitchen and start rummaging through several pots. The clatter and the clanging somewhat muted beneath Canby's rambling.
Liberated from the bowels of a copper pot, the House Elf appeared victorious as he speared what appeared to be a small pastry treat with a a skewer and carried it over to the table's edge. Bobbing on the end of a skewer, a saccharine treat that the House Elf leveled in front of Jorah. "Eat the nice treat for Temie..." the House Elf sounded as if he was talking to a reckless puppy gone astray.
One of the other House Elves would try to wrestle the skewer away from Temie (House Elf #2). "Give it back, it is Temie's"
"No!" The second House Elf grunted. "No sweets for young Mr. Jorah!"
The skewer would flop about in front of Jorah wildly. He could snatch it as if flung back and forth in front of him, but after a few seconds of battle the bit of pastry would fall off the end and unceremoniously fall into the great cauldron of stew that was brewing.
"You ruined it. That is bad! Temie is going to be is so much trouble!" The House Elf cried as he started bashing his head against the table near Jorah's feet.

Jorah couldn't believe what he was hearing. This elf, Canbey, had never heard of Headmaster Lear? Impossible. As Jorah stood on the table shouting down the hall to anyone who could help, Canbey reacted in fear. The change in his demeanor caught the boy's attention. He turned to Canby as another house elf Temie wreslted with a third elf over a pastry. "Who, Canbey? Who will get mad at you and your friends?" Jorah waited for an answer as Temie's pastry flopped into a cauldron of stew. He screamed in dismay and began bashing his head against the table as punishment for ruining the stew.
"Enough!," Jorah yelled at Temie as sternly as he could muster. In a more calmer tone he added, "I'm sorry about the stew, Temie." He put a hand on his shoulder, "but we have bigger problems. The head of this castle, the old wizard with a beard and shiny armor... he is missing. I need your help to find him Temie. You are a free elf, I can not demand that you help, so I will ask. Please can you help me or find someone who can?" Jorah turned back to Canby. "Now Canby, who is it that you're afraid of. What does a free elf have to fear at Hogwarts?"

The elves were agitated, panicked and scared. They were also obviously lying, at least in Canbey's case. It was impossible that Headmaster Lear was unheard of in this school even if the House Elves chose to remain out of the politics. There was something else that was quite queer about this situation, the fact that the elves were fighting among themselves.
"Who, Canbey? Who will get mad at you and your friends?"
Jorah shouted over the commotion. Temie ripped the pastry from Canbey's hands and flung it into the stew, taking that momentary distraction as an advantage. Canbey bashed his head on the table. "Bad Canbey! No! BAD!"
"Enough!"
Jorah commanded.
"You don't understand young Jorah!" Temie cried as she grabbed a rag in her hand and gripped the lip of the cauldron. With a mighty heavy she knocked the iron pot over onto the floor. The stew had a strange blue-ish hue. "It's ruined!" She cried as she clutched onto the brick arch of he fireplace and sobbed.
"I'm sorry about the stew, Temie."
She had already thrown her head on the table near Jorah's feet and was bashing her head against the table. The tabletop rattled beneath the pounding of house elf heads. How quickly the kitchen devolved into chaos.
Jorah put a hand on her shoulder.
"But we have bigger problems. The head of this castle, the old wizard with a beard and shiny armor... he is missing. I need your help to find him Temie. You are a free elf, I can not demand that you help, so I will ask. Please can you help me or find someone who can?"
"I can't!"
Temie cried. That was confirmation of sorts, even if what was never said.
"Now Canby, who is it that you're afraid of. What does a free elf have to fear at Hogwarts?"
"Nothing," Canby obviously lied. "Canby knows nothing," he affirmed. "Young Jorah needs out. Out of the kitchen," Canby announced. He started to usher Jorah towards the door but was stopped. Temie had grabbed his sleeve.
"No, leave Mr. Moussa alone," she looked up at Jorah with incredibly large eyes even for an elf and added. "You need to get away from us." It was a warning and from her tone a serious one. Jorah was right, there was something known by the house elves, but what and why were they so unwilling to share?
Temie would pull Canby back away from Jorah and take his hand. "Temie will get you away from here. Don't eat the sweets. Any sweets young Jorah. Promise." She was leading him away from the other elves, some continued to work and busied themselves but others stared at the duo as they made their way to the door. "Not all house elves are good," she gave him a push. "And you're not safe."
Out the door, into the hall Jorah was expelled.
