You know we're gonna be, gonna be golden
We're gonna be, gonna be...

One of the songs from a movie that was trending in the muggle world repeated itself like a broken record in Sere's head. Thanks to the shower user next to her who hummed the song while doing their activities this morning, Sere was reminded of how popular this thing was during her Summer Break. The hype lasted longer than I thought, apparently. Well, the songs are indeed earworms.

That aside, Sere finally reached the Duelling Club. She went straight to the fourth-floor after finishing her very-late breakfast (more like a brunch). It was a little bit earlier than 10 AM: her appointment time with Alejandro Garcia. She bumped into Alejandro in the Common Room and he asked Sere to moderate his duel with a new Hufflepuff student named Malcolm McGregor. There would be no better way to start the new school year than a duel, so the lioness accepted the offer immediately.

The Duelling Club was pretty quiet, as it was still the first month of the new school year. Sere, in her Gryffindor robe, chose the piste on the right side of the entrance and climbed up. It only took a short moment until the two duellists arrived. She gave them a little smile, "Hi, Alejandro! And... you must be Malcolm. Nice to meet you." Sere then explained some important rules they needed to know.

"Alright, enough with the rules." Sere wrapped up her brief explanation, "In your positions, and start!" With a single command, the first round began.

This was it, his first duel at Hogwarts. It was unofficial, not really, but Merlin that didn't stop the anxiety swirling around in his stomach like a swarm of billywigs. The blond Irish boy had listened to his mam recount her own time on the piste when she walked these halls herself. Now it was his turn, and he hoped he'd make her proud.

He'd eagerly signed up for the Hufflepuff Duelling team waitlist as soon as he'd seen the parchment hanging in the common room, but he hadn't quite gotten added to the team yet. So when he heard someone was wanting to have a duel, he impulsively said yes, the idea of a friendly competition having been far too tempting. But... maybe he should have asked a couple questions first before volunteering. Questions like... if they were the same age as him, maybe. Especially since now that he's getting a better look at his opponent, it became apparent that the answer to that question was definitely a no. But, Malcolm was sure he'd be fine. Probably. After all, he'd already learned a handful of spells. Not as many as a third year probably knows, but, what's the worst that could happen, right?

He pushed his wheelchair over to the bleachers and set his bunny, Custard, down on the pet bed he'd brought along. He ran his fingers through the golden mane behind the rabbit's head, "Stay." He said softly, even though he knew the likelihood of that actually happening was... almost nonexistent. Regardless, he made his way over to the platform and tapped the side of his chair twice, and waited for the familiar feeling of it lifting an inch or so off the ground before navigating is way up the stairs onto the piste. With his wand clutched tight in one hand, he nodded politely to the two Gryffindors already waiting. His nerves curled tighter, but he met them with a small, lopsided smile.

"Don’t you be goin' easy on me now, aye?" he said, eyes glinting with a hint of mischief as he settled into position. "I'll have ya know, I'm tougher than I look."

Duelling, Broom Racing and Quidditch were the three sports offered at Hogwarts. Broom Racing, I quickly found I was not really good at. I had high hopes for Quidditch as it was the most similar to football. I had quite a mediocre stint as Chaser and also Gryffindor was not the best team. We were quite bad actually. We won against Hufflepuff but got steamrolled by Ravenclaw. Mate, was I glad I wasn't playing against Slytherin. Gryffindor got absolutely demolished.

Duelling was the only sport I hadn't tried yet. I had to ask around the for a duel. Maybe for someone in my year but what I didn't expect was for a first year to accept and show up. We were only 20 days into school and you're telling me this first year has learned enough spells to duel. Hard to believe! I also bumped into Sere in the common and asked her to moderate the duel because she's on the duelling team.

When I got to the duelling club, my opponent was already there.
"Don’t you be goin' easy on me now, aye?" said Malcolm, as he settled into position. "I'll have ya know, I'm tougher than I look."
"Malcom, yeh? Don't worry, I won't be goin' easy on you." I replied with a small smirk.
I quickly got into position.
"May the best man win I guess." I said, pulling out my wand.
Sere gave the signal for the duel to start. Focus. I shouldn't underestimate him. If he had the balls to accept, he certainly must have the skills to duel.

The first round began right after Sere gave the sign. Malcolm immediately casted the dazzling Green Sparks Charm, forcing Sere to squint in her position to maintain a moderator's fair view, and so did Alejandro. This Verdimillious might be giving him a hard time. Umm... He started this duel with some hard times.

Sere's thought said 'some' because the girl had heard the spell Alejandro was about to cast earlier. The incantation didn't sound right, the pronunciation wasn't clear enough. She had to try hearing and analyzing it several times until she finally understood what Alejandro was trying to do: casting the Tickling Charm. The spell didn't even appear from the tip of his wand. The lioness folded her arms and shut her mouth. The urge to cast the Tongue-Tying Spell on herself was so real, she didn't know how many times she intended to give a clue, It's Rictusempra, ric-tuh-SEM-pra. Sere clearly remembered everything about the silver light and its effects. It had been a constant nightmare for her -who hated laughing and being forced to laugh-. Fortunately, as time went by, she got a little bit used to it, and now it didn't feel as bad as the first time she was hit by this spell.

His wand movements weren't as precise either. Sere let out a long sigh. "You have to try with another spell, Alejandro." The girl turned her gaze to Malcolm. "It's a hit for the badger! Let's see if you can use this momentum in the next round." The lioness gave another sign, "Round 2... Start!"

Gosh, that green light sure was pretty, Malcolm thought, and it actually hit! He'd managed to land the first blow! His internal celebration was cut a bit short when he remembered his opponent was also about to fire off a spell of his own. Squeezing his eyes closed, the blond boy braced for impact as Alejandro cast his spell. And... he kept on bracing. In fact he was still bracing, and starting to get a little confused, since he had definitely heard the boy say some sort of incantation, when he heard Sere's sigh.

Finally he cracked an eyelid, wondering if the other boy had intentionally miscast the spell, or if the fact that nothing had happened had been a genuine accident. He gave Alejandro what he hoped was an encouraging smile. He was ready for whatever was going to come his way, and he wanted to have a fair match. In theory, the Gryffindor should be able to give him a competition worth writing home about, and the Hufflepuff honestly hoped he would.

As Sere asked to see if he can keep up the pace, he raised his wand again while a mischievous glint entered his blue eyes. The badger, it seemed, was just getting started.

Sere gave the signal to start and the duel went wrong straight away. Before I could do a single thing, Malcolm sent a green sparks charm my way and caught me by surprise. At first, I saw a vague green light. A flashing white light was soon followed after that, blinding my eyes. I blinked quickly trying to adjust my vision back to the right color. That didn't seem to work. This duel was going so well.
"Shit!" I muttered under my breath.

I had planned to use the tickling charm on Malcolm but maybe I should've paid more attention in DADA last year. I don't know if it was the wrist movement or I wrongly said the incantation but nothing happened. Not even a small spark from my wand. Great, this has to be an new all-time low for me. If I somehow lose to this first year, I'm definitely not signing up for duelling. Is this why I'm bad in Broom Racing? Because I don't how to duel. Broom Racing is basically dueling on brooms. Duelling is already proving to be hard, evidence is right in front of me. Also having to control your broom makes it harder.
My vision had came back a little bit by now. If I am gonna lose this duel, might as well put up a fight.

The second round began with a clear difference in strategy between both of the duellists. Malcolm gained some confidence after the Green Sparks Charm in the first round. Good for him since confidence was something important for someone who went on to the piste for the first time. He tried to get Alejandro to dance, putting on a show on the piste. Unfortunately, Alejandro dodged the Dancing-Feet Spell quickly. His evasion was so good. Sere had once seen the Gryffindor Quidditch roster list for one of the seasonal games held and his name was on it. Perhaps Alejandro learned some new tips from sports, including how to dodge smoothly.

But, hold on...

It seemed more than that; Sere noticed Alejandro's movements were more than just normal dodges. "Ah! Alejandro is actively dodging right now!" The Gryffindor girl concluded. This was part of Alejandro's strategy. If your vision is impaired by something, take some fast here-and-there moves as fast as you can to avoid any potential attacks coming your way.

Brilliant.

Sere could see Alejandro starting to regain his vision after that. "Everything's back to normal, I guess. Then, let's move on to the next round." The girl folded her arms, "Prepare your best action, and... let the third round begin!"

"Be the main character of your own life."

It was a smart move, all things considered. Malcolm could admit that much. With your accuracy lowered like his opponent's had been after the green sparks spell, doing your best to dodge out of the way of the next attack while waiting for your eyesight to recover showed a level of strategic thinking that impressed Malcolm to a degree. And despite his best try to get a lock on Alejandro, the lion's dexterity was impressive, adjusting his course at random enough intervals that the badger wasn't quite able to predict his next move. The level of evasiveness on display made Malcolm curious if the brown haired boy had spent a lot of time on a broom - it certainly reminded him of how his family moved during the occasional friendly quidditch games and races when the workload on the farm was light, at least.

While it didn't especially surprise him when his spell missed the other boy by a considerable margin, and even though he privately acknowledged that the Gryffindor's tactic was impressive, it didn't keep him from getting a bit frustrated, "Glad ta see ya were plannin' on dancin' 'round on the piste whether my spell hit ya or not, but Merlin's beard, can ya bloody stay still?" He said with a hint of a laugh in his voice.

My vision came back a bit but not enough to cast a spell at Malcolm. That green-sparks charm was not ideal. The best action for me now would be to dodge whatever Malcolm's gonna throw at me.

I saw his wand arm move probably casting a spell. My vision was still too blurry to cast a spell but I can still see a spell right in front of my face. I felt something fly at me. I dived to my left and landed softly on my feet just in time to recognize the spell: the dancing-feet spell. Classic. Sorry, but I won't be dancing a jig today on the piste.
"Glad ta see ya were plannin' on dancin' 'round on the piste whether my spell hit ya or not, but Merlin's beard, can ya bloody stay still?" said Malcolm with a hint of a laugh in his voice.
I laughed and gave a mock bow. Time dodging bludgers, and getting hit by them, on the quidditch pitch did well for my dexterity it seems. Dodging a ball coming at you at a hundred miles an hour is hard. After bludgers, regular spells would've been light work.
"Takes a little more than some green sparks and a little dancing charm to take me down." I replied with a cocky smile, regaining some confidence.
Maybe I'm not as bad as I think I am. Now that I can see clearly again, I need to focus and win this thing.

Oh, he got a point. Sere agreed with Malcolm. Alejandro moved here-and-there aggresively because he chose to actively dodge. It looked less different than dancing on the piste.

Back to the present round, the situation hadn't changed between the two duellists. Everyone was still at their maximum stamina and still going strong against each other. Alejandro chose to cast the Dancing-Feet Spell, and it worked, but the accuracy was too low, allowing the cautious Malcolm to dodge it with one swift movement. Sere wondered how Tarantallegra worked on someone with a wheelchair. It would be interesting to know the answer to this unique situation. However, Malcolm had successfully evaded Alejandro's spell and Sere lost the chance to know the answer immediately. Well, perhaps she should ask the Professor directly.

On the other hand, Malcolm once again gave her -if not everyone- an unexpected surprise. "Wow, that Flipendo was a perfection. Beautiful." Sere commented as the impressive jet of light shot toward Alejandro. The Gryffindor swiftly dodged it. "If I were you, I'd be stunned in admiration. Excellent succeed to avoid the Knockback Jinx from Alejandro!" She applauded.

After that, Sere again gave both of duellist a sign to prepare themselves as the fourth round was about to begin.

"Be the main character of your own life."
